Battery drain a bit weird? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So since I can't get a hold of my phone right now, I'll explain with an illustration done in Photoshop

My battery graph goes a bit like this.
As you can see, the first green segment is the normal drain rate while my phone is in deep sleep. Say, if I restart the phone, and just leave it to sleep without touching it, the graph would go down at this rate. This rate is pretty good for me, usually a 1% can last 4 hours.
The blue segment is the drain rate while browsing with wifi. The drawing is only an approximate illustration, but needless to say this drain rate is much faster than the green drain rate. I can get 5 hours with wifi browsing, with equates to 1% every 3 minutes. It's not too bad I think.
The problem here is, after browsing (or doing anything) over wifi, the battery curve would go weird. When I'm done with browsing, I always turn wifi off. What I would expect was that the battery curve would immediately return to the normal deep sleep drain - the green line. And yes it should, because as CPUSpy shows, the phone deep sleeps perfectly. But the graph, instead, shows something of a "transition" curve - the red one as shown in the illustration. The drain in this period isn't as fast as the wifi rate (blue), but it is faster than than normal deep sleep drain (green). Only after some time will it return to the green rate.
So...what is causing that red curve?

Did you check for wakelocks using betterbatterystats?

Yes I did, but I thought having a wakelock would take away from deep sleep time? I usually wipe my CPUSpy stats and leave the phone to sleep for an hour, it would almost always come up as 99% deep sleep. But anyway, I did check again, and RILJ was at the top of partial wakelocks, at 16 mins after 16h. It isn't seem to be adding time though.

Why two threads within half an hour ? They're essentially about the same thing. You could easily have edited your OP and/or title in the thread you created ~26 mins before this one :-/

Dunno why CPUspy is reporting wrong, but the rilj wakelock was for long, hence the battery drained more. If you're looking for a solution, what I've read to solve that wakelock is to turn airplane mode, switch off mobile, switch it on and then turn airplane mode off....

Never going into deep sleep

Title says it all. CPU Spy revealed that (since last flash on Monday night) I had 12 seconds of deep sleep.
Can anyone guide me on how to find the culprit?
Running unofficial KG3 with CF KG3.
Thanks!
Bump. Someone must know.
try reading a few of the other threads about battery drain. Plenty of info already exists. If you have a more specific question, you're more likely to get some helpful answers.
How much more specific can I get? My phone never goes into deep sleep. I just wanna know if this is a stock issue or if it's due to an app.
Of course it is because of an app. Check which up has been running continuously.

Download Better Battery Stats, see under Wakelocks what's going on for max time. And also do post your Battery Usage graph.
Regards.

OK, I am not an expert but still saying,
Your graph is quite well and normal I think. Look at the Awake and Screen On bar, they are more or less synchronized. And look at the Wakelock stats, it's clear that you have GPS On for 24 mins, Latitude for 2 mins, now GPS hogs battery, it's clear. So by that point I think you are fine
Wanna know more, post the graphs in Better Battery Stats thread.
Regards.
Thanks for the reply but the issue is that my phone is NEVER going into deep sleep. That shouldn't happen.
Well I don't believe that CPU Spy stuff mate. If it's not in Deep Sleep then it should be Awake, but there is Black Awake spaces there, so that means your phone does enter Deep Sleep mode, or whatever it is called.
Your phone is fine, if there was a problem your awake bar should have been full blue, that's when the phone is active all the time.
Try turning off Google Latitude if you have it enabled and make sure it's the latest version.
Like I've said before. The phone is supposed to go into deep sleep. It's not. There's something wrong.
The culprit is Google Maps as I see in one of the screenshots. Freeze it with Titanium Backup. Also, turn off network location tracking.
Hmm, I can't recall WHAT did it (I tried a multitude of things) but now the phone appears to be going into deep sleep. The best way to tell is whether it takes a half a second to wake the device. I think it MAY have been the car home or whatever that comes pre-installed...
Same problem...today phone don't go to deep sleep.

None of the answers are correct. You've asked a question that has been answered in countless threads before you.
I see that from your screen shot your phone is plugged in. It has been well established that the phone never enter deep sleep when it is plugged in.

Large battery drop overnight?

I've noticed what appears to be excessive battery drain while left on overnight. My phone went from 97% to 70% This phone should not be using this much battery while in standby mode. Display consumed 37% of that 28% even though it was off all night. Anyone have any ideas on what this could be.

I usually lose around 2% overnight and I always have wifi on..Download cpu spy from the market and make sure its going into deep sleep..
Also try betterbattery stats app and see if you have a rogue app causing a wake lock or something.
its not going into deep sleep, as is evident by it showing it being awake with the screen off. do you charge via USB or car charger? there is a big that prevented it from going into deep sleep. if you use a wall charger the issue is not there.
I did download CPUstats already and the phone is not deep sleeping correctly. I will try the second app you mentioned and see what's causing the wakes. Thanks.

I have the same response as MR.DSL
I have noticed, since I did a deep cycle of the battery, it has started to maintain better % overall.
Biggest drain is driving with music from over the air, and navigation running.
Hence, I use battery backup for driving.
Love this phone. They just keep getting beter each year.
I have the same problem although i have the problem only when flashing tpc's Rom. And i don't have my gmail account logged in so therefore i shouldn't have any background apps keeping it from deep. Although when flashing back to stock.. I have no problems.
Just got my note yesterday and notice there is a similar problem this morning. With wifi on but sync off. The battery dropped about 15% in 6-7 hours without any usage.
Then I remember when I was using other android phones (streak 5, desire z) when I use GOOGLE Latitude it drains my battery almost continuously. Just log out the Latitude to see if it gets any better.
it is the deep sleep... before I started rebooting my phone every morning after it was charged to 100%, my note could last merely 13hrs.... since I started rebooting every morning, it lasted more than 18hrs and still had ~30% of battery.... and battery watch shows I usually have 50+% screen on time and wifi always on
So after resetting my phone and reverting to stock kernel. My phone dropped only 3% over 7 hours. It was in deep sleep 97% of that time. I'm hoping it continues to behave this way.

how does one find out if the gnote is going into deep sleep mode or not, using the "cpu spy" app? does it tell you right off the bat or you need to correlate it with something in order to determine if it is or not? i'm having the same issues with my battery life dropping significantly over night. i tried restarting my phone this morning after i disconnected it off the wall charger. i'm at work right now and the battery life is still dropping fairly quickly, after i had already killed all the apps before turning off the screen...
edit: i'm running on stock kernel and have not rooted yet..
is your phone rooted or not if so what kernel are you running?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA App
So is this issue only present in rooted devices? If so i think ill just flash the stock back on and wait for ics.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
That's what I'm trying to figure out. If anyone is having this issue while running a rooted kernel, try flashing stock kernel to see if it changes anything. Either way please report results.

S3 draining battery fast

So I rooted the phone and installed UltimaRom v11. Now the battery is draining like hell...I solved the issue of the charging (since it is a hardware stuff, that we need to charge with a wallcharger, yara yara yara), but the draining issue is a PitA.

usually fast battery drain is related to kernel, modem or media-scanner issues.
first try to install other kernel (maybe stock). and check your phone for media scanner wakelock problem.
THANK YOU for giving me an idea at least. I'll try to change the kernel to stock, and how the heck can i know if its a media-scanner issue....
sure, no problem.
for media scanner thing check this thread.
basically, you can find out if media scanner is using up your CPU under "Partial Wakelocks" tab in BetterBatteryStats.
I don't think it is a rapid battery drain. From the screenshots you have provided, your phone has only been up for 28 minutes. That being said, the percentages of your wakelocks are based upon how long the phone been on battery; i.e if a wakelock is 20% and your phone has been up for 100 minutes, that wakelock has been occuring for 20 minutes. From what I've seen, after a boot, the S3 tends to go crazy for a while, various wakelocks happen, and after 30 minutes - 1 hour or so, the wakelocks settle down and come to a halt. Then the percentages go down, and soon becomes only a tiny number later on.
Here's an example: PowerManagerService wakelock is showing 80% in BBS after your phone has been up for 30 minutes. 30 x 0.8 = 24 mins (How long the wakelock has been on for. After 2 hours (120 minutes) if the wakelock has stopped, it will only show up as 20%, because the wakelock only has occured for 24 mins, which is 20% of 120 mins. As time passes more wakelocks will occur and then we can see which ones are the real problems.
Provide us with a screenshot after your phone has been running on battery for about 2-3 hours or so, or just before the juice runs out, for more accurate results/replies. Hope I helped!
Let's see now.

Battery indicator inaccurate

Anyone else seeing issues with really inaccurate battery readings? I'll be at 99% charged for 15+ hours sometimes, and then things will drop rapidly or even just die at 20%. I've also noticed when charging that it'll get to 99% within an hour or so and then spend 30-45 mins at 99%.
On top of this, my phone battery just died at around 55%. Are others just draining their battery all the way to try to calibrate?

What rom and Kernel are you on. Also what mods if any such as battery indicators and such have you put on your phone?
@dragonstalker: I'm running stock with the latest OTA update. I'm using Batterybot to display the indicator in the notification bar, but the reading is the same from the stock battery display.
@amit_sen: I've had the phone for a few months.

Doesnt do anything for Li batteries its fud.
For the last 2 days, my battery has drained overnight and is dead by the morning. The first time, I didn't think of it. This time, I looked at the history and it drains within maybe 6 hours without the screen on, being awake, or anything. I turn off all of my radios besides cellular at night. So I have no clue what could be causing the battery drain. Any ideas? Here is a pic of the history

Is anyone using battery calibration apps? I know some of the custom ROMs like Hatka Supreme list that they include some sort of function in those regards.
I thought even on stock there was a way to erase battery stats so that you could recalibrate. No? Could of sworn I had seen the option when I first got the phone. Could be wrong too...

I downloaded Gsam and it says that my radio is taking up most of my battery. Any idea why this is happening because its never done this before? I used to get at least 2 days of battery usage. I charged it until it was full yesterday, let it sit overnight, and this morning it was @ 20%. I'm on newts M7 and z's B5.4. I've been on this combination for the majority of the time I've had my phone an no problems until now. And I don't think its the kernel because the same thing happens when I had it on 5.1. I noticed I was on global mode and I changed it to LTE/CDMA. Who the hell knows, that might be what's causing it. We'll see. Any help is appreciated.

Using the battery app see what app or service is keeping your phone awake. That would be my guess as to what the problem is. I would also suggest flashing cpalmers kernel as well, which has been really good for me in limiting awake time.

Install BatteryGuru, give it a couple days to learn how you use your phone, and watch how it saves your battery once the learning period is done. I swear by this app, it brought me from almost a day to about a day and a half as far as battery life is concerned.
I installed the Gsam battery, it shows that "phone radio" was sucking down a vast majority of the battery.

Then you must be in an area where service isn't good and your phone is searching for service which kills the battery quickly. To conserve battery turn on air plan mode and then turn service on when you get into a zone with better coverage. This will help your battery a lot.

My opinion..don't install any more apps than what you only use. You install more apps it will obviously suck more battery. What you do. Root/unlocked the bootloader and install a sense 5 4.1.2 base Rom. I came from stock and since I've installed a sense 5 stock Rom I've notice a big battery saver comparing from the original sense 4+ stock.hopefully that helps.
Thanks all
Strangely none of this helped the battery drain is too high in standby, after resting (no apps installed only stoke apps) and even flashing sense 5 rom still 15% per hour and even in Air plan mode . The strange thing during the use of the phone the drain is normal.
