Loud phone - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I've seen tons of threads from complaining that the SGS2 is not loud enough, however for me it is.
I use in-ear shure headphones with Etymotic plugs, which make it go really deep in my ear and isolate me from the evil outside world.
Anyway, I am not sure where my problem comes from. I used to have CM9 nightlies running as a daily driver and always kept them up to date. My sound was fine. I even installed Voodoo LOUDER to pump it up a little to get the perfect volume.
I recently installed CM10 and either the volume settings have changed or Voodoo messed up with my hardware because on the lowest settings, the music comes out really loud (I use Rdio which has no volume control settings).
Does anyone have any trick to change that?
Thanks
Gary

Same thing here. Never used Voodoo Louder or anything like that before though, so I doubt that could be the issue. I hope someone has some idea as the sound distorts even at a quarter volume.

It's because audio is still screwed in CM10. I get the same :-\
If you use PowerAmp enabling DVC will help with getting things a bit quieter, but it's still not perfect.

I'll give that a shot thanks
Edit : Didn't work sadly.

Are you happy with the NC speaker volume?

The purpose of this poll is to find out if there is a majority that feel the stock volume is low & more importantly, to find a fix.
Edit:
If you are happy with your NC sound, please describe your experience.
If you have a fix & are happy with the sound, please describe the "fix".
If you have tried some solutions & are not happy with any of them, please describe your experience & vote that you want it louder.
I have tried "Poweramp" & by bosting the midrange freqs & the preamp level, the speaker was very distorted. Not sure if the speaker was breaking up or Poweramp added a bunch of distortion. I suspect that the speaker just can't handle the power.
The max volume level on the stock BN ROM is atrocious and unusable. Since going to CM7 and flashing Dalingrin's OC kernels the volume has been much improved and is usable. Would still love for it to be louder, but the magic Dalingrin worked has at least made the speaker usable.
I can't hear anything really if I hold the Nook up. But when it's flat on a surface it has plenty of volume due to the sound waves reflecting.

What he said. On CM7, it's okay. The NC is a pretty quiet device, but I can't really complain any more.
If I need better and louder sound, I use my FiiO S3.
The way the question is asked causes the poll to be flawed. You should constrain the answers to a list like:
Stock sound low
Stock sound fine
froyo sound low
Froyo sound fine
CM7 sound low
CM7 sound fine
etc and so on.
The problem is people will answer the current question baon what they are using. On my CM7 installed Nook the sound is fine, but on the stock rom it sucked. How should I answer you?
I too have noticed that if the nook is flat, I can't hear much at all. I have been using a small wire easel that I picked up at a craft store, which helps out considerably.
My brother bought me a small compact speaker. I just plug it in. It works beautifully. On board sound on stock sucks monkey balls.

Duly noted.
If you are happy with CM7 volume you could answer that you have found a solution. If you are not happy, answer that you would like it to be louder. The main reason for asking the question, is to find a fix & if it appears that many people are not happy with the sound, maybe devs. will address it.
I will add some comments to the OP.
Thanks,

[Q] any way to increase in-call speaker volume?

Hey,
I'm having a problem with the extremely low in-call speaker volume on my GSM hero. Anyone got a solution to this problem?
The amount of information you communicate is overwhelming.
How about a headset?
what kind of information would you like? the phone is rooted, i've tried a whole bunch of different roms and kernels and still no difference. At the moment i'm using WildHeroWWE 1.2.1 and LV 0.4.7 . And I would really like to be able to use the phone "as is"
Yeah, ROM and kernel were the informations I wanted to hear.
Not that I'm aware of the different settings of ROMs or kernels in the audio area, however I tried to find some informations.
As you said, there is no change in the in-call volume on different ROMs.
So I would count the software part out.
Maybe you got a defective speaker?
Let's try something out: While calling change the output to the external call speaker. It should at least be a bit more unquiet. Maybe you can compare the different loudnesses (loudnesses?! ) ... if the external speaker acts normal there is definitely a problem with the internal speaker.
Have you tried to raise the volume with the left button?! You didn't answer to your old thread, so I think you did.
Well, it's like this, everything seems to work, the in-call speaker volume is just a little to low. I can hear everything that is said when i'm talking on the phone, if i'm in a totally quiet room or something like that. The sound is infact quite clear, I would just like it to be a little louder. If i set the call to speaker, the volume is normal, i'ts just the in-call speaker volume that is too low.
Really hope some of this stuff makes sense...

[Q] Radar keyboard volume levels and other audio strangeness

Has anyone else noticed that the keyboard click on the Radar is a lot quieter than other WP7 phones. In comparison to a Mozart or Trophy it's virtually inaudible at normal volume levels.
I have also noted that there is often interference in the gaps between audio tracks - a definite clicking sound when the track changes. Also not an issue on the Mozart or Trophy.
And the voice used for text to speech is very quiet when played back via Bluetooth - if I turn it up loud enough to hear it, then it's distorted. Once again, not a problem on Mozart or Trophy.
I've already sent the phone back to HTC who just reflashed it and returned it, but the audio levels are unchanged.
ROM is latest version: 7.10.7720.68 FW 1600.2200.10803.401 Radio: 16.23.02.09_2_16.24.00.23U
Anyone got any similar experiences? Or does your Radar behave differently?
Yup mine too
Sent from my Radar C110e using Board Express
Same here though all phones are quieter than my DVP is. That is the loudest phone on the market.
Damn, that's a shame. Spoils an otherwise very good phone. Think I'll be going back to my Mozart, even if the Radar does have better battery life, until HTC release a fix.
I don't have a Clicking noise when changing tracks... no noise at all...
Im on my 8 day with it and simply love it.. comming from Sensation and Galaxy S2
I don't see my self going back to android from WP7... it simply works better with all the things i need it for...
by the way im from Denmark
I hear quite the opposite. My Radar is twice as lout as my other HTC HD7. Maybe you just need to adjust the volume?
I have a similar problem but not quite the same
Every once in a while the volume on my HTC Radar drops quite low for music, ringtone and everything... if i turn it off and on it goes back to normal levels...

My DVP is still louder than my sisters hd7. That's what you get for placing a speaker on the back of the phone.
Every review i've seen/read they say this has a way better speaker/louder speaker than other WP7 that have been out. maybe your radar is defective? idk
My radar has better sound than my DVP. My DVP was a lot louder before it got Mango update. Although keyboard does seem to be at lower volume level.
What I hate about radar is that whenever I am changing the tracks while playing the music, it's like I have to wait for zune to start playing the music until I can move on to the next track.
I don't think is a problem with the keyboard lower volume. I just love it the way it's, I preferred like that because with my HD7 everyone can heard when I typing. And when I use the audio jack on my car seems to be louder.
Sent from my Radar 4G using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
Well if im mistaken, I thought this guy had the Focus S, If it was it was pretty loud with the keyboard clicks, a lot bolder sound than my DVP. But I may be mistaken
Nothing wrong with the volume on mine. Although 8tracks and Mixtapes both fail to output any sound at all. =(

i suffer with the 'clicking' sound when changing tracks between music on zune when listening through headphones. its really annoying. I ma wondering if it is because i am using high quality headphones and they are just that much more sensitive than the standard rubbish. Going to try some cheaper headphones and see if the problem is still there and report back.

I've been having the same issue. It was pretty rare at first, but it has been happening pretty much constantly since yesterday's update. I'm doing a backup and restore right now to see if it will help any, but it has definitely been a real hassle.
Song change click noise...
I had the same problem with clicking noises when zune changed songs. I fixed it by going into the sound enhancer under options and turning off all audio effects. After that it no longer makes any kind of clicking noise. Only problem now is playing music seems to drain my battery about 10% an hour.
Have gotten used to the quiet keyboard click but the clicking and popping between tracks is still a bit of an annoyance. Agreed that with all the sound enhancer effects switched off they are almost inaudible. But TBH I think the audio without the enhancer is a bit weak. Have settled for SRS which seems to me to be the best compromise overall.
I have a weird thing with my Radar - the sound from Headphones is very low. I mean you can hear well only when volume is 20 and higher. I checked my headphones and they are perfectly fine. Even tried several others on Radar - still the same.
It's about the same effect with Bluetooth headsets.
I deleted Sound Enhancer some time ago, so I can't adjust boost through it
Then re-install the sound booster silly
I've discovered Sound Enhancer in Settings, but not as a separate app. However, it doesn't increase the volume dramatically

[Q] Anyway to lower volume

Hi,
I have just switched from an iPhone 4 to SGSIII. When going to sleep I like to listen to tune in radio. The only problem I am finding is that on the lowest volume notch using the volume keys is still too loud for me.
Is there anyway to lower this further?
I totally second this.. I am coming from an age old HTC G1, and i loved how i could have it SO quiet, that i could hold the phone up to my ear at night (the speaker phone side, not the talking side) and hear it just fine but a person laying next to me in bed couldn't tell i was listening to anything.. but with the Gs3 its so loud even at the lowest setting possible that at 4-5 feet away you can hear it.
Not to mention the text alert sound is too loud when I have it at the lowest setting.. On the G1 i could turn it down to the lowest setting and it was quiet enough that if you listened for it you could hear it in a quiet room, but if you weren't listening for it you'd miss it. wish the Gs3 had a little finer tuning on the quieter end
I do that too a lot and the only solution I found so far (sgs2) is to use apps like PlayerPro/PowerAmp for mp3s and XiiaLive for internet radios because they have internal volume control on top of androids one. Gets the volume so low that even at night with in-ear-canal headphones I can barely hear the audio. Not that I do that but still, it's nice to have control of the volume so much.

Poweramp is the only solution I have found but I really like Tunein and that does not have any control. There must be a simple system wide solution. My device is rooted so are there any options?

I'm resurrecting this old thread. I too would love to be able to turn down the volume to as low of a setting as I want. I don't understand why the phone manufacturers don't simply provide that capability!
There is another post here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565559 on a technique for the HTC One. I haven't tried it on the S4 yet.

Solution for headphone jack white noise!!

For anyone that can hear white noise when listening to audio through the headphone jack at lower volume levels, there is an easy solution to this.
You must be rooted and have a custom kernel installed (I use ElementalX and this works for me).
In a kernel editor app or the one provided with the kernel, go into sound settings and reduce the gain level of the headphones from the stock level of around 20 to -20, this will reduce the maximum volume a bit, but it gets rid of 100% of the white noise.
Good luck!!!
This worked (so far, at least) on my Nexus 5X, too. Thanks for this! Had been really bothering me.
For me, this changed the sound to just the left headphone. However, I somehow magically fixed it. Maybe the combination of switching kernels or something. But I no longer get the crackling at all.

Been looking everywhere for a solution, surprised this post has so few views/replies considering how many people seem to have the same problem.
I was on the verge of doing an RMA when I found this post. This definitely works. The white noise goes away at all levels (even the lowest volume setting, though with the gain set so low you can't even hear certain tracks with it at the lowest setting). The issue of of the audio being super noisy and abruptly cutting in/out during quiet/silent moments in audio when at low volume is fixed too.
I can't say I'm not a little bummed out that the defect is technically still there and this is just a workaround. Not to mention max volume gets lowered by a lot, but I'm a quiet listener anyways.
Sucks to need to go through all this just to have the phone work the way it should.
Thanks for the solution!
Keywords for people searching for a solution since it took me so long to find this post: white noise, static, crackle, low volume, headphone audio
