[Q] Nandroid Backup - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Q1:
I have root + CWM Recovery from CF-root.
Im on stock TouchWiz 5.0 and all stock from Samsung. Only thing I've done is the CF-Root.
If i make a nandroid backup now in CWM recovery before I install a custom rom, will I then later, if I want to go back to the stock Touchwiz and firmware, CSC etc. Can i just restore the backup?
Or do I still need to flash stock firmware and that through Odin?
Q2:
If i make the backup to the Internal SD Card, will using the Wipe data/factory reset in CWM recovery, remove my backup?
Q3:
How much space does a backup take?

1. Yes you must restore Nanbackup from the same Rom you made the Backup with.
2. I think yes, so make Nanbackup in ExtSd, I think is factory default in ExtSd, at least mine does it...
3. About 2Gb

help regarding backups and flashing roms

i'm actually new to this stuff, i've been trying different roms to find what's more suitable for me and i have one problem.
the guides said that when you install a new rom, you have to wipe data and then flash your sd cards, but doingso erases all my apps and everything else, is there anyway to backup those stuff and easily restore them after i've installed a new rom? thank you so much in advance for your help.

Use titanium backup to backup your apps and app data before flashing rom's.
but where will the titanium backup store the backup if i'm supposed to wipe my sd?
Sent from my LG-P500 using XDA App
First wipe and partition your SD and reboot. Use titanium now to backup all apps. Also now you can copy anything to SD. For example download rom now and flash. As partition already there, no need to partition again.

if u have recovery installed then just Nand backup along with ext backup.. it will completely take a backup image of ur ROM along with sttings and applications installed..
when restoring just Nand restore ...
thanks guys! i'll try this tomorrow, i have to get some sleep first. thanks again!

[Q] How to safely test MIUI and revert?

So MIUI is available and I want to try it.
But I will likely want to revert to my phone as it is now.
Right now, I am running 2.3.4, baseband I9100XXKI1, kernel 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKI4, build XWKI4. It is rooted, has Superuser and ClockWorkMod, no Root Manager. I have no physical SD card.
How do I get MIUI on to my phone?
What, if anything, will that process delete?
What should I backup and how to restore?
ie. If I do a backup in ClockworkMod, is that effectively backing up the whole phone or just the kernel and ROM? ie. Is restoring a ClockworkMod backup enough to restore the phone to its pre-MIUI state?
Install rom manager
Backup your current rom. It backs up everything
Download miui from the miui website. You can also download it directly from rom manager.
Boot into recovery using vol up, home and pwr button and flash the rom. You will have to reinstall rom manager in miui.
Play with miui
Restore your previous rom from rom manager.

Just make backup and if you don't like miui, then you just restore. And everything will be back as you had before miui. Don't forget to wipe data and cache before flashing miui. Clear Dalviks cache aswell!

I recall being told on this forum that ROM Manager doesn't work on this handset.
can I clarify...ROM Manager basically just invokes the clockwork mod recovery, right?
So a backup in this way would backup absolutely everything, including the contents of the internal sd card?

Where should I be placing the MIUI .zip? On /sdcard?
Similar question re: backup - does ClockworkMod backup include the contents of /sdcard? Or is that not included because, technically, that is regarded a physical SD card?

Only backup your system, app and setting. Don't backup all your data on sd card
You can copy zip file to sd, go to CWM recovery menu, wipe all then choose flash zip file from sd card

I think what he might be getting at is can he place the zip on the internal storage of the device, and flash it? As it seems he doesn't own a SD card.
Just a heads-up: I tested MIUI on Friday, after making a full Nandroid backup of my VR3.0 with CMW.
When I did a restore of my VR backup afterwards, a lot of apps were force-closing, and even fixing permissions or wiping cache and Dalvik cache did not help.
What did work was a flash of CM7, allowing it to boot once, and then restore VR again (with a full wipe of course). Everything is running fine again now. I suppose this has something to do with the CWM recovery version included in the kernels (my VR had a 4.x version, CM was 5.x).

[Q] Titanium backup folder missing after root and install ROM

Helped a friend to root and install custom rom.
Basically the step i used
1) Root it with odin and cf-root
2) Root working, so i get titanium backup and run the backup
3) Factory reset and install Omega rom v37
4) failed to install, seem like i get the older version of cf-root. So i re install the cf-root
5) Install omega rom v37 and it worked
6) Install titanium backup. However, when i want to restore, seem all file missing. I scanned through whole device, cant find it too. The sdcard/titaniumbackup is an empty folder
Question
1) Could the backup file in sdcard0/titaniumbackup?
2) Why the backup will disappear by itself?
3) Factory reset/wipe cache/wipe ...cache will delete the backup, right?
4) Watapps backup disappear too?
5) Instagram pictures folder disappear too?
5) Any idea to get the backup back? Feel really sorry as lost my friend's data, please help me if there is a way to get the data back.
Thank you.
how did you do the factory reset? from the settings menu?
Yes, from the cwm menu.
And i did it just like what i did for the last 50 times

So any cluel?

Yes, you factory reset, which wiped your internal sd, and you really should set titanium to save to external sd if you have one to avoid this happening again, and backup to pc before you start messing around
I never understand making backup on internal sd - think it would be good to advise user of TB after installing to change the folder at first. (If ext SD is present)
Do anybody backup PC on c:\ ??? Must be more complicated on a phone...

Nandroid backup

Quick question.
I'm rooted with stock. I'm trying to complete a nandroid backup using Mobile Odin and a kernel from Philz Touch that will inject CWM recovery on my s2. (I'm on 2.3.5 GB, and found my kernel match through Philz)
I've read that all I have to do is open Mobile Odin, click file and select the kernel from my SD, do I need anything else? also will flashing delete my internal and external SD? will I have to apply all my apps again via TB?
This will be my 1st flash attempt since I rooted (using Odin on my pc) back in 2011/12, though now I'll be using Mobile Odin Pro.
I know it's a newbie question just need reassurance my SD (internal & external) will be ok, and that I don't brick my phone if indeed I need more files before attempting.
Cheers

Flashing processes through cwm don't delete your internal/external SD, if you flash a kernel through cwm your phone will be the same with different kernel

[Q] Format internal sd before downgrading from 4.2.2 to 4.1.2?

Hello,
I have a s3 gti9300. Currently I have 4.2.2 paranoid android 3.15 on it. I want to downgrade to Omega rom 4.1.2 for stability and stock purposes.
My question is this. Since 4.2.x enables the multiuser feature and adds an 'sd card 0' and 'emulated' folders, is it recommended to format my internal sd before flashing omega ROM since it doesn't have the multiuser feature? I don't mind losing the data on it. Or should I just format the /system? Or doesn't matter? would rather not have all those extra folders.
And if i format my internal sd card, which recovery should I use? Currently I am on Philz recovery latest version. I also have a nandroid of stock Samsung 4.1.2.
P.S. If I do need to format internal, any advice on what to backup would be appreciated! I already have my efs folder backup in my Dropbox so I'm guessing IMEI is safe
Thank you!

I always wipe internal sd moving between the two
Just back up your sd, do a titanium backup, boot recovery/mounts and storage/ format system/data/cache........ready to flash, .....Just remember that if you are going to flash new Rom through cwm, make sure it's on your external sd!
