Removing Root + CWM recovery - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does installing a stock firmware remove root and the CWM recovery? ( I use CF-Root)

YES, it does....

You could flash a wanam stock.
It retains root

If you are doing this for warranty, remember to use triangle away to reset your flash counter

I'm a complete noob to devices outside of the HD2, but I found it extremely simple to root my Dad's phone with CF-Root. Now he's received an OTA Software Update and I'm not sure whether or not it's safe to do as in the changelog it says that OTA support was added in v6.3 whilst I used v6.0 as soon as I saw it in the Portal. I don't really mind if I lose root, but is it safe to update? Or should I flash a custom JB ROM instead?

New to Root, one question.

If I root using CWM, will it wipe my phone or do they only suggest backing up in case the root goes wrong?
Thanks in advance.

If you root by flashing the chainfire cf kernel you wont lose anything. It really just changes to a rooted stock kernel. Is it cf root you want to flash?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA
I guess so. I just want root access to remove Three's bloatware apps and improve performance and battery life. However, rooting means I can't update to official ICS right? Or wrong?

dr.m0x is right. it won't erase any personal data ... The only thing it does is (as far as i know) install a different kernel and install a different recovery program.
PS And btw it also installs the programs SuperSU and CWM
One question about this: is it true that I can't get ota updates after applying cf root? Instead I have to flash them with odin?

There may be a problem with OTA updates, if they work your device will probably be unrooted though so you just have to root it again

Well if you having this problem with OTA, you can always update via Kies which was working fine for me. I was in XXALF6 and rooted and managed to update to XXBLFB via Kies, but all modification, root and custom kernel gone.
Thanks for the help...

OTA`s will be downloaded but not installed. You could try updating with Kies but you will loose root. Best thing to do is flash the update (new rom) yourself with Odin or better yet with Mobile Odin Pro (you can flash firmware with this app and keep root). For you to decide.

Rooting difference from S2 to S3

So my S2 died the other day and I went to buy a i9300. Now I've been searching about S3 rooting and I've found conflicting info on this.
So when I first rooted my old S2 I did it with a temporary CWM that disapeared ofter reboot stayed in stock with stock kernel and kies was able to update my firmwsre without deleting root. I actualy updated from 2.3.5 to ICS via kies without removing root or loosing it after.
I was wondering if the same could be done with the i9300 I want to remain stock for now and don't want to replace stock recovery with CWM. Is there a temporary CWM for S3 so I can push the SU binary to system part without flashing anything over stock?

I did try the search button. The only thing i found was someone talking about the new recovery in S3 only flashing signed packages from samsung or something like that.
Thats why i opened a new thread to see if someone had some new info on it.

CF-AUTO ROOT. Installs only the SuperSU app. Does not install custom recovery. Dunno about updates, though. I think it supports OTA.

Use CF Auto Root from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957273 Download Odin and the CF auto root for your phone all instructions are on this thread
You can still update via Kies as long as everything is kept stock even though its rooted but you wont get any OTA updates that wont work

Thanks. So that method everything stays stock including recovery and o xan still use kies. Will a kies update erase root or will it be like with the s2 where the root sticks after the update?

Yes the update will remove root but after update simply flash root with odin again, only takes a few minutes

Thanks. Going to try it. By the way staying in stock means no init.d scripts right?
