Nand-backup stock SGS3 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys
I have an International SGS3 and it is still in it's stock status. I don't want to loose the update OTA nor via Kies and also I don't want to trigger the binary counter.
Q1-How can I perform NAND backup to my stock phone without loosing all of these..?
Q2- Does unlocked boot loader with custom recovery(CWM) boot via Android SDK will trigger the the binary counter ?
* when reboot from the custom recovery (cwm) via Android SDK the phone will automatically restores the stock boot-loader

you cant make nandroid backup with stock phone/recovery.
rooting gives you cwm recovery which in turn triggers binary counter.. but there are many ways to reset binary counter.

[Q] (Q) Backup of original "Android system recovery <3e>"?

I want to grab some software off a stock galaxy ace from the same provider as mine. However, before I root it and install CWM, I want a way to revert it to Android system recovery <3e>. Obviously, I cannot back up the stock phone, it's unrooted and has no CWM recovery backup yet, and once I install CWM, it won't have the stock recovery anymore. Any way to get the stock system recovery?

There's no flashable zip or whatever .
All you need to do is to flash any firmware via ODIN

If u flash any stock rom ,u will get your stock recovery back =D
Where can I get a stock rom for the device, though? I can't take a backup to make my own without CWM...I assume I could learn to use Odin with a tutorial somewhere, but Odin can't take a backup, can it?
sammobile.com
Nice site. I don't suppose the Europe or Asia firmwares will work in North America, though? (Canada).

ATT OTA tripped flash counter!?

Well, anybody or devs who can explain to me why the official OTA would trip flash counter for noob like me?
I did flash CWM 5.5.0.4 via ODIN that caused counter to become 1.
Then flashed Super User v0.87 (now updated v0.93) via CWM, and counter stayed at 1.
I did not get into download mode after that, nor flashed anything via CWM.
No custom Rom installed yet.
Installed insecure boot using Samsung Tool Kit V1.0 by Mksip (great tool):good:
Then OTA update this morning.
It downloaded fine, and after backing up Google search by TB, I tried to install.
I went into recovery automatically, and gave me "installation aborted. unverified signature"
So I went into download mode to check, and it shows flash counter now upto 3.
And shows as custom binary, and custom Rom.
I know I did not install any custom ROM yet, why does it think as custom rom and binary?
Is it because of insecure boot I installed?
Any light to this is so much appriciated for my learning for android.
Thanks in advance.

[Q] Booting in Recovery Mode Adds 1 to Counter, Why??

After resetting the flash counter via TriangleAway, If I go into CWM Recovery Mode and than return to Download Mode, counter says 1 and system binary is "Custom".
But for example this guy does the same steps as i did, but in minute 3.47 he sees 0 and official in his device but i see 1 and custom in mine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=raY_bwsHZSs
Please inform me why is it and how can i fix this?
Nope it never has so something wrong on your phone or running TA .
and yes i have just tested ..
TA sets 1 to 0 boot recovery boot download mode and still 0
Status will of course say modified until you follow the instructions and flash stock firmware and factory reset .
jje
To be honest, there isn't any other instruction left that I didn't try. Applying every step one by one.. "Reset counter on boot" option in TA is also active. But after booting in CWM Recovery, it add 1 (i'm using stock rom and flashed siyah kernel for TA).
Which instruction are you trying? I'll be glad if you can copy&paste to here. I don't think so but maybe there are something different by any chance..
BTW Here what I did last time:
1) Flashed a 4.0.4 stock rom.
2) Rooted with CWM Recovery included one.
3) In CWM Recovery Menu, wiped factory&cache&dalvik
4) Rooted with Stock Recovery included one.
5) Used TriangleAway and removed the battery when it's done (before booting the device)
6) Booted in 'stock' Recovery Mode wiped factory&cache.
7) Immediately booted into Download Mode (counter was 0, both status were official)
8) Flashed the same 4.0.4 stock rom and downloaded automaticly 4.1.1 JB.
Now I'm using it like an ordinary users, I hope it doesn't change binary/system status & counter in time...

[Q] Original Recovery mode

Hi,
I need to send my phone (Galaxy sII) for warranty and I need to install the factory rom. I'll do that, but i've heard that I also have to install original recovery mode (now i'm running clockworkmod).
Does restoring original rom with odin also restores the original recovery mode or do I have to do it anyway? If so - how?
Original rom will restore the stock recovery
But u should first ..triangle away to reset the binary counter..
Then flash stock rom
Yeah I did that. It shows 0 now. Thanks.

[Q] Problems with rooting

Hey there. I want to install CM11 to my I9205 but I can't seem to root it. I've read most of the threads about it, but nothing works for me. It just shows me a security warning from KNOX and SuperSU says that there is no binary installed.

You probabely have OTA update recently... now you have ROM with Samsung KNOX security system and with new bootloader. If you want to root your Mega and you are willing to accept irreversible tripping Knox counter (= warranty void) you can find many tutorials how to root ypour phone and disable Knox. Basically it needs essentially to instal custom recovery using Odin and then installing Super user from recovery. But ask yourself the troble to find exact procedure.
Note: now you can not downgrade your firmware to version without Knox. Any attempt will end in bricking your phone.
So if you want CM11 you have to root (with tripping flash counter = warranty void), installing custom recovery CWM or TWRP and then installing CM11 ROM nad choosen version of gapps (ROMs AOKP or CN type are lacked all Google apps so if you wnat it you have to flash it separately)

Thanks for the reply. I've managed to install a custom recovery, but I can't seem to make the root work. I have tried both CWM and TWRP, and still can't get SuperSU to work properly.

try to use this information.
As I said in other place - in such situation the best way is to start completely anew:
- Download firmware (e.g from Sammobile)
- Install it by Odin
- Install custom recovery
- Root phone
In provided links you should find detailed description how to do it. Bear in mind so for successfull installing custom rom's you HAVE TO disable KNOX e.g as is decribed there

Good luck
