Hello everyone
Not new to rooting and romming. Plan on doing a bunch of reading and will make every attempt to refrain from asking repetitive questions. But was hoping i could get a few points in the right direction. I am currently running 3.2.
Is the jump to ICS worth it? My phone device is bionic and ICS basically turned a crappy bionic into a superphone...im hoping for a similar advancement from honeycomb to ICS.
Is there a particular " rom list" short list a few of you fine folks could recommend?
Any pitfalls to watch out for or a good thread I should read. Im going to check out all the stickies before I get going.
Thanks for the help.
I would look into jelly bean for your tab. I installed it and it was like a new device.

Cool, thanks. Is JB buggy? I know it is on the Bionic but that's with a locked bootloader and there is only one (I think) example of 4.1 in that space.

Hey guys, I've been running CleanROM 2.1 since Saturday (its amazing btw, thanks Scott ) and I thought ICS was supposed to support USB hosting? Am I wrong in thinking this? Or was it just not available in HTC's leak?

I'd suggest you asked this in the general thread, otherwise you'll get some people upset here
I would however I feel like it wouldn't apply. I'm running a custom ICS rom and stock is still GB. But I will gladly post in the general section too.

My apologies. I try my hardest not to be a n00b yet somehow still manage to do it.

With jb being released to aosp would it be possible to use the ics kernal and jb code to it up and running? Sorry I'm a newb.

Yes, the JB and ICS kernel are the same, we have to wait for the developers to get us a working build of JB.
thank you for replying with this information. and thanks to all the developers for building the roms.
I looking at my magic 8 ball and it says a JB ROM is most likely in the distant future.
I have never built a room, but i would think this would take a lot less time then ice cream sandwich, especially if its the same kernels and radios. Now undoubtedly if we get official jellybean it'd use newer kernels then we have now. And since we can use the same radios and kernels, i would think the locked bootloader wouldn't be an issue. Bit I'm a newb and could be wrong.

You're right in one aspect I think, it won't take as long as ICS did, but still, the source is under 24 hours old, I would give them at least a few days, if not a week or two to get a good ROM built...

Ah ok. Well, yes. I don't think it'll take as long as it did with ICS, but then again, you never know.. There could be some major hiccup along the way and delay it, or it could be done by tomorrow.. I'm hoping for the second one in that But we'll see
Personally, I think that we won't see Jelly Bean from Motorola, if we get it, will be thanks to the dev community...
i read somewhere on a XDA port for galaxy nexus i think. That JB is almost the same as ICS but it need a modification in ramdisk to work, unless what it wont boot.
So without an unlocked bootloader and/or KEXEC we're done
I am trying to get my head around porting ROMs...but my severe lack of knowledge has been a roadblock so far. If someone can and want to join hands in this venture, they are more than welcome...PM me with the details and we will take it forward...
Always remember, great things have small beginnings.
Cheers!

This.
I would safely assume this would help us reach nearly the full benefit of running ICS and possibly JB..
I just wonder if we can start building kernels or if we can only use certain ones once kexec is working fully.

I personally don't think jumping from CM7 to CM9 to CM10 (JB) is the right way to go about things. DZK is doing it right though IMO. He got CM7 stable enough again, IMO; To move on to CM9. He's been working hard and made what 5 Alphas and now on a Beta? (Don't know much anymore as I am on AT&T Atrix 2 now) But thats dedication and loyalty to the X2 for sure. I know he mentioned of a CM10 and JB but I as well as other and I'm pretty sure DZK mentioned, it will be awhile before it's stable enough to release. Now the Kexecis where it's at...if he can crack that, I may personally have to come and dust the X2 off as I have for the Paranoid Port and AOKP port as well as the Beta CM9. With everything else going on, again my opinion would be to keep anticipating JB and hope everything else gets worked on first to grasp stability on these great ROMs that have already been pushed out. Just my $0.02 on the Topic.

I agree with you. I think we need kexec working first. We are already running ICS on a Gingerbread kernel which isn't ideal, but it works. Running Jelly Bean on a Gingerbread kernel might be worse. But this is all in theory, obviously. Who knows, it could be super smooth. But with kexec working on the DX2, its guaranteed to work right. I really hope dragonzkiller can get it working. Especially before I upgrade to something else. It would be a shame if he got it working after everyone has moved on.
I agree I'd much rather get kexec working and have a fully functional CM9 than a half baked, unstable CM10 due to our locked bootloaders and no work-around(kexec).
Sent from my Stock Rooted DROID X2
Well here's to hoping that the kexec gets sorted out so we can keep up with those higher end phones.

So my friend has a Telus Fascinate and after using her phone briefly I decided she really could use a custom ROM for improved performance and to remove bloat. She doesn't own a computer and uses her phone in place of one. I am familiar with rooting, recovery and flashing custom ROMs. I've got a few questions and preferences:
I'm looking for something that will boost performance and remove bloat.
I need it to be incredibly stable as I will be flashing it and then it will be out of hands.
It doesn't matter if it's TouchWiz or not. I would prefer ICS if possible.
I've spent a bit of time lurking here but I don't think I have the time to completely educate myself on a phone I will have in possession for a few hours at most.
Thanks in advance for any help you guys can provide, I really appreciate it!

I don't mind being on call for problems. She lives super close to me and I've given her my old Xperia Play as a temp phone because I need a USB Jig to get into download mode which I had to order. I just want something simple and stable enough for everyday use so I can minimize my involvement.

@Havoced, did you manage to get AOKP running on Fascinate 4G? Please let me know, thanks !
This is not a rant or a complaint thread by any means, just curious. What's the deal with Jelly Bean? Months ago it was stated that JB would be an easy jump from ICS once we got kernel source. Is this not the case? Is nobody working on it? Any insight would be appreciated.
Once again, not a rant thread just trying to sift for information.

Ditto. Take a look at https://github.com/intervigilium for the pieces of Intervigilium's Sensation port and do git diff on files between branches to see what he changed. The only thing you'll need to do extra is to update the RIL for the new android_frameworks_base.
I'm almost inclined to do the Jellybean conversion myself, but at the moment I'm just too lazy.

Are you sitting on a bunch of build fixes?
Because after messing with it, it looks to me that we need the updated msm framebuffer headers to get the latest libhwcomposer and friends to compile. The modified ABI means the kernel needs the updated driver to actually work, and that entails a lot of other intra-kernel dependencies, too.
