do you not have warranty? why would you do such a silly thing?
This phones over 2 years old lol. My warranty is long gone. Plus I've been successful at desoldering the metal joints and then soldering the replacement part.

How is your phone over 2 yrs old? The Amaze was only released in 2011.
Also, just a heads up, you shouldn't "bump" your thread within an hr of posting if you don't want to get flamed. Our forum seems to have gotten better about flaming, but there are still some hot tempered people here.
Hey my friend, im afraid you don't have any soldering skills. If so, it will be a very hard task for someone whos not used to do that since the soldering points for those phones are very fragile. I suggest you to go to a shop near you and find someone who has the skills to do such a task. Trust me its not for non experience technicians. Any way if you still want to try that at least make sure you have a very thin solder, i recommend flux also(makes your life easier) and a good desoldering braid. And the most important thing, a lot of patience... Good luck on that, but like i said, its not an easy task so you better think about taking it to a shop.

Here is my sad story.....dropped the T-bolt for the first time and the digitizer cracked (had it in a case even). So I ordered a new one from repairs universe and they advertised that it would come with a guide. It did not, but the digitizer arrived quickly. So being an electrical engineer I decided that I could probably do it anyway.
I managed to get it apart and learn the hard way about a few things not to do. I manged to crack the LCD :-( I looked an no one has them :-(
My model used a Sharp lq043y1dx04 according to the sticker.
Anyway, I have figured out how to take the T-Bolt apart and figured that while I wait for a new LCD to become available I could at least share some pictures with the community. Being a new poster though, how would you suggest posting pictures?
***Update - photos are here, let me know if there are any that you would like to see better: s1098.photobucket.com/albums/g378/bscythe/ ***
Finally, I do not recommend anyone try this....you need to remove the LCD in order to replace the digitizer. The LCD is double sticky taped to a metal tray. To get the two apart you must do a lot of prying which can destroy the fragile LCD. If you are going to try it, I'd recommend a 4" wide razor used for scraping windows to insert along side the LCD to use to pry with. Be careful not to cut the ribbons though!
I'm a mechanical/acoustical engineer...
For pics, I would use photobucket...
As for the screen and tray, usually they are one piece, is there any kind of tabs through the board that look like they may hold the tray in?

Me too!
Thanks for posting, OP.
Well I hope that my misfortune is at least helpful to others at some point since I could not find a teardown to reference before I tried fixing the phone myself.
I was able to get a new one from work (thank goodness for the large number of available upgrades on our account), but still plan to finish fixing this one when the LCDs become available. Putting it back together will be the easy part....I'll take better pictures during the process too.
Did you happen to notice where the cell and wifi antennas are located?
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
They are located in the battery cover. If you take it apart you will see the metal tabs on the battery cover that connect to the phone for the antennas.
This is the first phone I have ever purchased insurance for. My nexus one took a few tumbles and survived but I would hate to try to replace this phone at retail price. At least ebay had nexus one pretty available for reasonable prices.
Good luck maybe you can still purchase the insurance through VZ.

Well I dropped mine too and the digitizer is cracked bad. It still works and tape is holding it all in place but I need to get it fixed. I have taken apart laptops and fixed them and am a mr fixit in many departments, so I hope I can do it without cracking the lcd. I ordered the digitizer and am hoping to get some tips from you. Is there any way you put a step by step together that could guide me through this process? I would greatly greatly appreciate it.
I looked at the pics and with the beveled edges of the tray it seems to be very hard to separate the lcd from the tray with a flat blade. Does the LCD have to be detached from the tray? Also, since the bottom part of the case is a molded piece do the internals slide up and out?
Thanks
I'm sure that isn't the only antenna.

So i've been an Atrix owner for about 2 weeks now and my worst nightmare happend today. I was buying a drink from a vending machine and the phone slipped out of my pocket and fell SCREEN FIRST onto concrete.
I quickly picked it up and noticed THERE WAS A HUGE CRACK in the screen!
I AM SO SAD RIGHT NOW cause i bought the atrix outright from AT&T
i dont think the LCD panel itself was damaged but the glass on the surface only. The display looks perfectly fine still so i was curious if anyone knows how to switch out the glass part? What tools do i need?
I found this one ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Motorola-MB860-...838?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item588d7db4fe
is this the right part?
or do i have to buy the entire LCD, cause its much more expensive:

also, does anyone know any reputable sellers that sell LEGIT parts such as the digitizer? I'm not sure if i can trust these random ebay sellers...any suggestions would be appreciated
i attached some pictures to show you what happend - i still can't believe it happend
i'm also really surpirsed the gorilla glass broke so easily. The drop was at MOST 1.5 feet..

It's about the same price and those are both going to ship from Hong Kong. So expect a wait. I didn't find any sellers in the U.S.
There are some that would ship from the U.S. without tools but the price is more like fifty bones instead of 30 something.
Good Luck

Nah, they are more than capable. I replace digitizers frequently and I rarely have to break out my "good set' of tools. Yeah these are simply cheap lumps of plastic. But they work. And these tools should be safer to use than almost anything that the average person, who doesn't do this sort of thing regularly, might have on hand. I just didn't want him to order a digitizer and attack it with a butterknife. I was trying to be subtle about it tho... We don't want anyone to scuff their bezel now do we?
I am always on the lookout for great deals on tools for this. And I look forward to your recommendation for a tool set.

Warranty covers a broken screen? Reason I ask is because I would rather have MOTO replace the screen (or the phone entirely) than me replacing the screen and voiding the warranty. I do not have insurance
I broke the glass on my phone 3 weeks after I bought it and didnt have insurance on it. I called motorola and they sent me an rma. I sent it in and they sent it back to me fixed in less than a week. If I remember right it cost $90 for them to fix it.
so it was only the digitizer after all?

A friend and I splurged on the $60 iFixit tool kit because we made some spare cash on the side repairing classmates' phones. It works well, although I still don't know if I would justify the price. It seems that the major complaint on reviews for replacement electronics parts are the parts that come with them, if at all, so maybe getting a better set is worth it if you replace digitizers frequently. Replacing the Atrix digitizer/screen is a fairly easy task compared to other phones until you get to putting the new screen on, at which point trying to get the cables back into the housing becomes a pain.'
Good luck!

Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk 2
Surprisingly there is no video to put it together...
Let me tell you from experience that it's damn near impossible to put it back together without tearing the digitizer ribbon straight off the screen while trying to slip it through that tiny hole that you pulled it out of. I've replaced two screens and I still don't think I can get it right.
My screen cracked twice while still under warranty, so I played the clueless n00b after I replaced the glass (cracked screens are not covered under warranty) and claimed the phone wasn't working and I couldn't figure out why.
Strange thing is, I also couldn't find a place online that would do replacement digitizers either. I didn't look for long, but if you don't have an option of a warranty return, I'd pay the $50 or so to let someone else do this for you and get it right...
YMMV...
I recommend taking it apart completely, you can attach the digitizer to the bezel/chassis and then you don't have to deal with trying to slide the cable through that tiny hole, you can just clean the digitizer, clean the lcd, put them together and then put the entire mounting plate back together and it just clips straight in...essentially you make this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/180835204777?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
completely removes the chance of tearing the cable off the back of the digitizer...which is pretty common, sort of adds the step of getting the mounting plate off the fascia bezel...but its not to hard, be careful when popping up the volume/buttons camera cable area, that cable tears easily.
Has anyone replaced the charging port on their rezound? Where did you get the part, and was it a simple takedown and disconnect or was there soldering involved?

It is most likely soldered to the board, which is the easy part. The hard part will be finding the MHL connector to replace it with. A quick google search turns up adapters and etc which you don't need.
I would contact http://www.mhlconsortium.org and see what they say.
The connector is a smt (surface mount) part that will require desoldering of the old part and resoldering of the new part. You will also want to be very careful to not damage the pads on the circuit board when doing this type of rework. These pads can be easily damaged if you don't know what you are doing. Without knowing the exact part number, it is had to say where to buy this part but places like http://www.digikey.com/?curr=USD sell components like this.
Thanks for the replies, I was considering picking up a pair of rezounds one with a bad screen and one with a bad charging port for cheap. They're for sale together for just over 120 on craigslist. I was going to swap the charging port but I don't think I'm up for that challenge if it is soldered to the board. Screen swap doesn't sound like a good idea to me either. I've heard too many people screwing up screen replacements with new parts let alone something used.

The screen is easy to replace. Make sure you buy some double stick tape on amazon specially designed for this purpose. I think it is 2mm wide. It's like 5 bucks and will do maybe 10 or more phones.

Seriously, are you looking for a Rezound with a bad USB? Mine charges, but hasn't been able to connect to PC since about a week after I got S-OFF. I have been looking for clean used ones so I can recover mountability.
Sent into the innertubes from my Arnova 10 G2.
I imagine that the USB port wouldn't be easy to replace, I remember trying to JTAG my Xbox360 where I had to solder 24 gauge wire to the board and it was a massive pain in the ass. The Rezound is way smaller do I'd imagine it'd be that much harder.

They make solder in a paste form that melts with a heat gun. That is what you need for small amt stuff. It makes it easy.
Get a soldering iron with the smallest tip you can find. Make sure it goes past 600 degrees F or it will not melt with just the tip.
I replace charger ports on the Nintendo DSi all day and its fairly easy. But if you don't melt the solder, and you pull too much, you could rip the pads off the board. (Which I have done many times) If you have access to a heat gun, then that is better. Use the heat gun to remove the port, but use a soldering iron to put the new one on.
All these surface mount things are placed on the board by robots and then ride through an oven, never to be touched by human hands.
The pins are quite small (Holy thread revival!)
Hola,
My USB port is pooping out on one of my vibrants, and i ordered a new one, took the casing apart, and removed the motherboard, then realized that it is soldered on. SO, today i must pick up what i need, and get as much advice you people are willing to give, becayse i will be attempting this after work. Ive soldered very few things in the past, and they were much bigger than a phone. I have an iron, tho it is a fairly large one, and the guage wire i have is surley too big for this application.
My question is, on the usb port, there is 4 soldering points, and the pins at the bottom seem to just lay on their contact points, is this right?
Is there anything i need to beware of before proceeding?
I dont have anything to clean the existing solder up? Do i need one of those suction things?
What size guage wire and iron will i need?
Thanks for any help in advance!
Sent from my SGH-T959 using Tapatalk
You're going to want to make sure the foils did not stay on the motherboard. If you see any residue on the board, the new port won't get a connection.

I would maybe watch some YouTube vids and see what they do. Mobiletechvideos has one I believe. I am probably going to have to do the same thing on one of my Vibes so, I'll be following this.
I would think that you need a smaller iron with a sharper point, some flux, some patience and calm hands. Maybe some alcohol to calm you down and also to make sure the MB is cleaned completely before putting the new one on.

You should be OK without any new goo. Just don't leave it laying around for two weeks before putting it back on. I swapped motherboards on my phone (ironically because of a bad USB port on my original phone), and didn't have any problems with the power button not sticking back on.
Also, from what you said in your original post, it seems you think that the port's pins just lay on the board. That is not correct, they actually need to be soldered on which is no small feat (no pun intended) due to how small and delicate they are. If you do not have a lot of experience soldering you will likely damage the port and possibly the board. I'm not trying to dissuade you from doing this if you think you're up for it, but it does take some skill. As a side note the guys at mobiltechvideos offer a repair service for $35 which seems reasonable to me.
By the way, where did you guys get the replacement port?
Has anyone had to replace the charging port on the Rezound? My wife's phone somehow was bent on the inside and now needs to fixed.
I would suggest buying a broken rezound off of ebay or Craigslist. And just using that one. The part is 100 bucks on ebay, but you can buy a broken phone cheaper than that. The port is on the main board though. So it will require soldering. Hope this helps.
sent from GSN2 using Tapatalk 4
I replaced the charging port on a GS3. Regular Micro USB so it only had 5 pins. That was hard, and required an extremely fine pointed soldering iron. And I also have over 7 years of soldering experience. I barely got it working.
The Rezound has an Ext-Micro USB connector, and 12 pins. I do not recommend anyone attempt that. Remember that these parts are laid by laser guided robots, and then sent through an oven to be soldered. These are not meant for human hands.
Just buy a new phone or motherboard.
^^^^ that. What I said. If you don't have good soldering exp. Buy a cheap broken phone with a good esn and switch.

I have done this and you def need fine soldering skills. I had my dad solder it for me who has over 40 years of experience and has the tools for soldering stuff like that considering he works on small stuff like that all day , it works great but you need to be able to fine solder. If not, but either a working one online and use that or buy a broken on and do some swapping..its not really worth the hassle if you ask me
