[Q] Some Basic Questions for a Android Newbie... - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Hi everyone! I am considering getting the LTEVO (my top choice) for my first phone, henceforth my first android (I've used iOS on my iPod touch). I had some questions which I'm hoping you guys can answer:
1) When taking 1080p video, does the camera autofocus during the shoot?
2) My dad's HTC TouchPro2 has Sense and it's a resource hog and very sluggish. I know the Evo has a top-notch processor, but do you guys ever find Sense to be troublesome, lagging, or freezing?
3) I've read around here and found out there is a multitasking issue with Sense. Is the only [non-official] way to fix this by installing a rom?
4) Related to above question: is there a rom that has stock ICS?
5) When one flashes (i believe this is the right word?) a different rom, is it possible to return to the stock HTC evo software?
6) Do you guys know any good deals to buy this phone ?
The other phone im considering is the Nexus since it should get updates quickly; however, it seems the Sprint version still has yet to officially update to JB...
I am sorry if these questions have been asked before...I have yet to try a Evo hands on (I plan to go to the Sprint store and do so if my parents agree to buy it) so these might be very n00bie...

These are all good questions. I would suggest test driving the LTEVO and Samsung g3 so you can get a good feel for both. Now, I with that said, there are stock ICS rooted ROMs here, and I happen to run one myself. I personally love sense, and but if you find you don't you will find ways on XDA to turn sense off and there are also senseless ROMs.
There is a camera mod here that I'm running that makes the already amazing photos and videos even more amazing.
About the Nexus, yes it will always get updates first, but compare hardware specs to the LTEVO and also, understand that sometimes it is good to get updates and patches second, so you can read about all the issues that the Nexus owners have after taking the updates, and including Jelly Bean. This is the senior enterprise software architect in me talking.
You can return to stock with the latest RUU for the LTEVO nicknamed Jewel, and I would check out Amazon and Best Buy out for deals... I hear they just knocked $100 off the price.
HTH!

ICS from XOOM to Flyer?

XOOM got ICS port right now, with everything working well (except face unlock, but hey...)
does that mean anything for us Flyer/View-owners? is it possible to port it to our tablet?
would love ics on the flyer
EDIT: Link: http://www.xda-developers.com/android/highly-functioning-cm9-kang-released-for-the-xoom/
what does it mean to us? That the xoom got an ics port, nothing more or less.
Different hardware types and kernels mean xoom with ics is meaningless to us.
My guess is he was asking if there was a way to port it and mod it to work. What we really need to hope for of CM9.x to arrive that will support the Flyer/Evo View.

hahha somebody woke up on the wrong side of the bed, or are you always this negative? haha relax
im not stupid, i know that its a diffrent tablet, but this kinds of ports are being done almost daily.
as this fella mentioned, i was thinking of a mod, to get it to work.
He's not being grouchy, just straight forward. You cannot port a ROM complied for a completely different family of hardware and get it to function in any conceivable fashion. You'd be better off with a SDK build of ICS which would possibly boot if you hacked in a boot image, but none of the HTC specific hardware like camera, BT or video would function. There are already efforts underway to build ICS ROMs. Since ICS is built on top of HC, we have most of the pieces to build a vanilla ROM (no HTC Sense). Once HTC comes out with a working HTC device ICS ROM on hardware that is similar to the Flyer (yes some of their phones use similar hardware) that will be the port we want for ICS /Sense Roms.
I would love to have ICS on this device. Considering how much dev interest the blowout sales have generated I think its possible. But I am not going to how my breathe. I have a galaxy nexus but my evo view is still my primary device due to its pen and large screen. My wishlist for the next iteration of this device is: lighter, ICS, sprint 4g LTE in that exact order
Hopefully the fire sales have pushed HTC to keep going.

Reading about ICS on Prime on engadget has made me interested in ICS as well.

yeah i know, but since ive seen others with ics, that made me a bit inpaitient
htc sensation got the ics leaked, and maybe someone can start by playing with that one.
and i dont really care if its manilla or sense, both will do good dont think flyer/view will be getting any ICS official soon, since HC just was released.
if i seemed grouchy, it may be because I am a comp sci major with aspirations of being a software engineer. I view the question as either yes or no and then explain the logic why not. No intentions of rudeness, but I tend to assume I'm talking to ppl with similar backgrounds... At least on the net anyway.
Wooow...okey then...my bad! I should know better..

We are keeping an eye on the HTC Sensation leak. Right now there are 2 or 3 pages of things that don't work and of course its a different radio and HBOOT. So its a ways out from being useful as a port other than a novelty. By that I mean you might get something to boot, but none of the hardware functions like camera and touch screen would work.
May want to wait for something more stable to port..sounds more like a way to brick a flyer than a novelty.
How much difference is there between sensation and flyer? Also is the radio relevant for the WiFi flyer.
I keep forgetting the are 3g versions of the flyer.

ok, sounds good though!
whats the chances of a HC/ICS mix then, do you know? i mean, using what might be working in ICS (the best of it) combined with the useabilities of the HC.
*modding is not my area, as you might understand by now*

1. ICS is built on top of HC so we already have most of the ICS GUI. Google is already moving some of the ICS features into individual apps like the updated Google Search.
2. Radio is always relevant because it controls GPS, Wifi , and BT in addition to 3g.

Rooted alrady?

Ok guys, I have read other threads on this phone and I take it that its either been completely rooted already or is about to be rooted. Currently I have an Epic with Peoples Rom2.2 on it and shadow kernel, I'm hoping that the root process for this phone is as easy or easier than my Epic because next April I update and I'm thinking about the 4G LTE. I did find a couple of videos on it but so far nothing from ACS or qbking77. But I am still looking

Yes it has root. However, we do not currently have S-Off for the phones. Hopefully that will come pretty soon. And I am optimistic that it will be available by next April.

Actually, I get frustrated by people who have no clue what punctuation is and completely butcher the English language while simultaneously flaming another user about his/her ridiculousness. He may not be getting the phone for almost a year but his post, unlike yours, is still a valid one.
Yes guys I said I'm thinking about it, only reason is Sprint won't let me upgrade till April of 2013.
the reason I was thinking about it is I know the EVO 3d is rooted cause a friend of mine has one it was a tossup since I prefer a rooted device, but since the 4GLTE is rooted my decision is made
Thanks shook187, for telling me its rooted, and thanks Dannydeez for the link, I'll book mark that for future reference.
I'm 49 years old so I'm not exactly the best at pones and computers although I can hold my own sometimes. I'm way better at fixing cars.

Don't mind the people who want to flame others. Some people just can't help flaming others for something they do not understand or agree with.
If you have a question just type it in the search bar at the top of the forum to see if someone else has already asked, and subsequently received an answer. If you don't find anything there that fits your specific situation then don't be afraid to start a new thread. If you do find an answer that works for you, even if it is within someone else's thread, then be sure to hit the thanks button at the bottom of that person's post.
Now THAT feature of the search bar I didn't know, but being on an Epic currently I haven't had to use that since Uber taught me how to root an epic LOL.
I watched the root videos on the HTC and apparently I won't be needing odin anymore when I upgrade, but since I don't have one yet I do have to ask, at all stock is that thing as good as what I read it is? I know the main reason I root is to have control of my phone, and add and remove junk apps and Sprint bloat ware that runs down the battery.
Also around here the only place that has 34g is a one block section in one part of the city and I think the courthouse has 4g, dunno I can't legally use a phone in there LOL. So after I root I'll be asking you guys what rom is best, I knwo better than to ask now cause somebody is currently making one that isn't out yet.

By the time you have an upgrade there will be a better phone out I'm sure. But if you want a sweet phone with a ton of development on it, this will be the phone to get once you upgrade. My suggestion is to follow root instructions word for word when you do it, that way you don't mess up your phone. Good luck...in the future. Lol

Thats what I hate about this world, At first I got the Samsung Moment, well when I got that there were 5 different kernels and so many roms I couldn't count them all LOL, So I FINALLY upgrade to an Epic, the first thing I have trouble with is deciding which Kernel I want to use and what rom will go best with it LOL.
When I upgrade I hope this one is still being produced cause by then you guys will probably have windows Vista ported over to it, and I have gotten used to having a variety of stuff to choose from to put on my phone
I would just go with whatever phone is newest then... not what's out right now. For all you know the next galaxy phone will be out. I know for sure the next nexus devices will be out and they will be better than this phone because they will be newer.

Um, the nexus is not running toichwiz. It runs stock android. Will have faster upgrades and will work fine unrooted. My nexus right now would work fine unrooted but I don't like how stock looks. That's why I'm a themer . Trust me, the next nexus will be your phone if you don't like Samsung touchwiz. It will be your best bet of an upgrade. IMO however its your money and your choice I just thought I'd help you make the smarter decision.

Really a Nexus works? THAT I( never knew, as for touchwiz....not me I'm more a Go launcher guy, I like the stock Gingerbread look , but Emotionless beast is pretty cool too. But my wife and youngest both have evo3d's and even unrooted those work as fast as my epic rooted.

LOL, you know that GO launcher works like CIQ right? It collects way more data than it needs to. Also stock android 4.0.4 is just as nice and sleek as stock android 2.3.7 like on older nexus devices. Its the same deal just upgraded. Yeah evo3d's are a disgrace... IMO but some people liked them. Like i said if you looking for a great stock non bloated phone right out of the box a nexus device is for you. There has been word that nexus's next year might be manufactored by multiple companies and not just Samsung. So if you really need an HTC this will be the best of both worlds. Im just saying, dont make your decision so soon especially since this phone will be old by the time your upgrade comes....

Is it just me, or is the development section for this phone a ghost town?

I remember the HTC Evo days. Boy, I spent hours-a-day browsing the development section on XDA to get my flash fix. That carried over with my Samsung Galaxy S2 and then the S3. Now that I'm considering coming back to HTC for a fresher experience, I found myself jaw-dropped at how ghostly the development forums are. I figured this could be a result of the phone being so young; so I went to the GS4 to see if that holds true. Wow... what a difference. Those forums seem busier than hell. And it's only been about a month since it was released as well.
Anyone have any idea why that is? I've been trying to convince myself to get the HTC One. I got over the fact that it lacks a replaceable battery, a MicroSD card, and recently, I got over the fact that the images are just not all that it's hyped up to be. I figured I'd be transitioning to the Moto X Phone when that comes out later in the year, so I might as well put-up with these shortcomings. But not having the development support that I experienced with the earlier HTC devices, and recently with the Samsung devices is just not something I think I can get over.
I am constantly thinking of the word "potential" when referring to this phone. What a shame. HTC had all the tools to flip the market on its feet, but it seems as if they came up short... again.
Check out the non-carrier-specific forum...it's pretty active.
EDIT: HTC didn't come up short, this phone is considered quite a success.
My theory for this specific forum being dead is that T-Mobile's national release of this phone was yesterday (06/05/2013). Before that, it was only available in their "high-volume" locations.
Oh wow. And all of those will work with the Tmo version?
Sent from my badass Samsung Galaxy SIII.
yea all the development is in the international forum. all roms on that forum will work on the tmo htc one and they work very well. i have flashed every sense based rom and most of the aosp roms. definitely not a ghost town over there:good:
Yeah, they should. But as always, continue at your own risk.

As you've noticed by now, there's plenty of developer support for the HTC One. It's all just confined to the general HTC One forums, which makes sense, as the various roms can be used on the AT&T, T-Mobile, and international HTC One's. Most developers don't want to have to maintain 3 or more separate threads for the same thing.
As was pointed out though, if you're looking for T-Mobile wifi calling compatibility, be careful about the ROMs you flash. Since the 4.2.2 OTA for T-Mobile isn't out yet, no 4.2.2 ROM is going to support it. I'd suggest Android Revolution 9.4, or a similar 4.1.2 ROM if WIFI calling is essential to you.
Also, since a Google edition of the phone is going to be coming out in the near future, developer support is likely going to expand even further.
So I think it's safe to say you can put your fears to rest and buy an HTC One. I don't think you'll regret it.
Yea I've been hanging out in the International One forums as almost all their ROMs work for us.
This forum really shouldn't even have a development section since there's not really any specific T-Mo stuff that needs to be done.
Every single ROM in the GSM section will work for T-Mo. There isn't a single one that won't work. The only thing you lose is T-Mo's branded stuff and T-Mo's wifi calling (as they are the only ones who do Wifi calling)/

Thanks you guys so much for your replies. I'm happy to see that the development forums for the One is indeed thriving. I'm more confident in snagging a one over the GS4 now.
Indeed, I don't see a reason as to why even bother with a Tmo specific section.

I was able to dig up an old link for Android Revolution 9.4 but can't find a description or list of features etc for it. Are you positive it has wi-fi calling in it?
I haven't owned an HTC since the OG Nexus One (had all Nexus devices since) so I'm reading up on S-OFF etc before I flash a new ROM. I really want to try out wifi calling though so that's why I'd like to make sure. Thanks in advance!

9.4 definitely has wifi-calling. I'm on 9.3 at the moment and wifi-calling works perfectly for me on T-Mobile. In the installer, just be sure to select T-Mobile as your carrier and it will install all the necessary files for wifi calling.
Also, note that S-Off isn't required to flash this ROM. All you need to do is unlock your device through HTC Dev, located at the HTC Dev site. I'd give you a direct link, but asinine restrictions in place on this forum are preventing that at the moment. Just Google HTC Dev and it will be the first result. You can't miss it.
Anyway, unlike with earlier HTC devices, this unlock method allows you to flash everything you need to update the ROM. Only some of the "black box" partitions like the radio and bootloader aren't flashable when it's unlocked with this method, but to my knowledge, no ROM requires that, and furthermore, the Nexus devices are very similar in that respect.
The only real advantage to S-Off is if you plan on flashing a different carrier's RUU, altering the radio, or changing your CID. Anyway, just something to be aware of.
Good luck.

Sweet, thanks I'll definitely try 9.4 then! Reception in my office all day is terrible so I'm excited to try wi-fi calling.
I think I understand in theory why S-OFF would not be needed. but the nerd in me wants full control with S-OFF.. Also, if I use S-OFF, i can return my phone to bone-stock and keep warranty right? As amazing as the hardware on the HTC One is (I've gotten used to sub-standard hardware with the Nexus line), I'm not 100% sure yet I want to keep it.
Any chance you could educate me on what CID is for? Evidently it may restrict/allow flashing ROMS from certain regions?
Also, I believe I have a basic understanding of what an RUU is, but could you elaborate for me by any chance? I believe it's basically an all i one installer for a full stock ROM?
Sorry if this is a bit off-topic, but this T-Mo sub forum seems a bit more forgiving than some other areas

It's worth doing to S-OFF. If you do, you'll have the ability to relock the phone and put it back to S-ON with zero indication that you ever messed with it. Also, CIDs are used to restrict ROMs from certain carriers to only be installed on certain devices. It's really only a stock or stock-leak ROM limitation, I don't think a single ROM in either the regular or original development section is CID-locked. Either way, if you are S-OFF, you can change your CID code to whatever you want it to be (the code "111111") is referred to as "SuperCID" because that allows you to in theory run an RUU/OTA from ANY Carrier regardless.
You are correct about what an RUU is. However, each RUU is specific to a build of Android made by the carrier, and so far, I think only the Sprint RUU is out. No one has a T-Mo RUU yet (but you really don't need one, all you have to do is flash the stock rooted ROM from our section here and then unroot from the SU app options).
Enjoy tinkering.

Perfect, thanks for confirming all that. I think I'm ready to get the HTC-noob stink off of me The phone feels so amazing in hand, it's making me look at all these Nexus devices (Nexi?) I have in a bit of a different light.. And once the Google Experience software drops, hopefully I won't miss having a Nexus as my daily driver!
You guys are so awesome. I'm counting down the days until July 1st now when I'll get my hands on my own HTC One. =)

You're going to enjoy the One. It's the first Android phone to have the build quality of an iPhone with specs that beat the pants off it
The only thing that sucks about the One is that because it has such a high pixel density, you will be extremely sensitive and aware of pixels in all your other displays (laptop/desktop/tablet etc).
I own an ASUS Zenbook, which is a 13" ultrabook with a full 1920x1080p display which is retina-levels of dense on such a small screen (I think it's almost 170 pixels per inch). The One? The one is a whopping ~470 pixels per inch. It is stupidly dense and I promise you won't find a single pixel no matter how hard you look.

PS - link to ROM if anyone wants it: http://www.androidrevolution.nl/downloader/download.php?file=Android_Revolution_HD-One_9.4.zip

Look like they took it down. I have it in my local computer here and I can upload it for you somewhere if you like. PM me if you have access to somewhere I can put it for you.

Will we receive a redline VIII or digitalbath for sense 5?

These 2 roms by team nocturnal (correct me if i'm wrong) are simply amazing. When our phone finally receives android 4.3 with possible sense 5.5, will these roms get updated to 4.3 as well? I will have this phone for over a year to come as I am just a poor teenager who stumbled upon rooting and the android developement world with an LG Optimus S, and upgraded to the Evo 4G LTE in may of 2013.
Will major developers like NIN and sinistertensei still be developing for our phone?
apologizes if this is a dumb question. Just never know when a developer will move on.

Well we all know amazing roms don't always come from xda. Why don't you ask them personal via Private message. We don't even have sense 5 from HTC and most people doubt we'll see it from them. (As a OTA)

HTC has broken their promise's before, but with the update planned to go into sprint testing in mid january, It's very likely we will see it.
You do make a good point however, I just typed this on the go earlier.
Thread closure
As previously stated by another member, there's really no point in discussing matters like this, when the ROM's are not hosted on XDA.
It's better to post your questions on the Developers own websites. Just Google them. They're pretty easy to find.
So with that said, it's better off to close this thread.

Call for help to any and all Droid Incredible 4g ROM Devs!!

I would really appreciate some help with a project that I am hoping to start soon. I would REALLY like to get Sense launcher (Rosie) working on a non-HTC phone, specifically the ZTE Force 4g. I am asking for help from Droid Incredible 4g devs, because of the similarity of the platforms.
Both phones are MSM8690, both LTE, both 1GB ram, both are stock ICS 4.0.3.
What I don't know is how well this might go. That's where I need your expertise!
You see, I am sort of an HTC junkie. My last 4 phones were HTC's and I am very used to the Sense UI. There is not a whole lot of development going on for my phone (you can check it out on androidforums.com in the ZTE Force 4G - All Things Root forum).. Basically there is a CM10 port which lacks bluetooth and wifi capability, the stock rom, a rooted debloated stock rom (DroidForce, which is nice btw, and what I plan to use for a base). Also, a JB rom which is so new that pretty much nothing works. The Kernel sources for my phone JUST got released, and many are using the matrix kernel ported from the Avid. I feel that it would be good to add a little variety for ZTE Force users, and if I can bring together a Sense modded ROM for the community it would be nice.
Yes, I know that Sense is not often ported to other platforms due to the difficulty, and this thread will hopefully help me assess the doability of the project.
My first question, for those of you in the know, is what is the kernel version of the first stock rom on Droid Incredible 4g? If it is 3.0.8 then that is another thing that these phones share in common.
My first Sense related question is also about the kernel. Are there dependencies (modules, whatever) in the HTC kernel that are required for sense to work? I have read that there may be but have not seen this confirmed.
Next question would be about the screen resolution. The Force 4g is 480x800 while Incredible 4G is 540x960, both are 4". If this did theoretically make it to the point of testing, will the launcher screens and icons scale automatically, or will each graphic have to be resized? If resized, how complicated would that get?
Aside from the possibility of kernel dependencies, the next most important question is, "What exactly do I need?" This is where I would probably need the most help from you guys. If this is even possible to attempt, I don't know which frameworks I would need to add, what apks and files to rip from the Incredible 4g rom. All of the very detailed stuff which I know some of you guys know, I will need to learn.
I know probably most of you might possibly think that this idea is dumb and just say "Buy an HTC", but because of budgetary constraints I could not get a 4g HTC and use it on my carrier (Boost btw). I have the HTC Evo design 4G and it was on Boost but it's WiMax and we all know that is a dead duck.
So is anyone willing to give me some answers to the questions above? If there is a possibility of this working (any version of Sense would be fine) then I would greatly appreciate some guidance! I'd really rather not go the route of another launcher skinned like sense. That seems lame to me. Plus, I dig a challenge!
Thanks for taking the time to read and I thank you in advance for any responses!
Cheers!

Guess I'll just dive into this on my own..
Wish me luck?
