Okay this is a question I have been wondering for a while now.
I work in the IT department for my company and we are starting to move to Smartphones. We have an exchange server with active sync. When you setup the stock mail account to it there is a page that states that the system administrator of the server has the capabilities to wipe your phone, wipe data, lock your phone and other things.
2 part question.
How do I block that from happening, is there a way to modify the Mail APK to not allow remote connections to modify my phone
If the above is possible.. how do I stop that?
haha because I don't want anyone having access to my phone even my own department a my job and yet I need to know how to stop if someone outside of IT tries to do it..
I know its alot, any suggestions.
Obviously I am rooted S-on unlocked boot loader and all the bells and whistles.

Dont think its possible without writing an app that alters the ports your phone connects on...Apps like ad-blocker are a good start it does that for you... Just add the ip you want to block to his list after decompiling the app... Recompile and install... That should work itll treat that ip adress as if it were an ad and block it...
I've done this mod already. I'll post it for everyone as soon as I can. I based it in mikeyxda's version which has sync while roaming as well, so I need to check with him first too.

Hi there, I have searched, I'm sure the answer must be here, but can't find it.
Am I right in saying that the email (not Gmail) program doesn't download emails to allow you to view them when you might not have a connection to a network?
I can't find the setting for this for the life of me, is this one reason to go for a 3rd party program?
Many thanks...
Screen shot the email you want to view for later?
Not really an answer but an alternative.

Thanks, but the whole problem happens when I'm moving about my work which is a large building, I haven't opened up an email yet and when I go to I happen to be in an area where there's no network (cellular or wifi), so I haven't had the chance to screen shot it first.
Any other ideas? Surely others must have found it maddening too?
Sorry to be a pain, but is everyone else experiencing this? Any workarounds?
Many thanks

Bump!
Whilst I'm at it, is there a way to stop the screen turning off when the phone is plugged in? I'm beginning to think I'm missing some settings somewhere, these are such basic things which I've had on other phones for years........

Not sure if you're correct. I suppose you're referring to the stock email program that comes with the SGS2?. This has been modified slightly by Samsung - but, either that, or the stock android email client both do download a certain amount of your emails from the server - Go into the mail program, clickon the options button, click More...select account Settings, select "Size to retrieve emails", and choose 5 kb as a start. This should cover most txt emails.
Riz
That's the problem-I have no option to change the size downloaded.
Any other UK O2 users out there?
Can any other O2 UK users confirm whether they have this setting option our how they've got around this problem?
Many thanks.
K9 mail allows you to set the download amount.
On the official samsung announcement it was promised that the sgs2 will have a cisco vpn anyconnect client. However I failed to find it, or any ETA, does anybody know any details about it?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
I've been searching for that aswell but failed to find it. Apperently it is not on the SGS2.
I would like to be able to use it too, so if there is any info please share.
I sorta got it working.. I had to decrypt the pcf file first to get the Group password and the I used an app called vpnc from the marketplace and put in the details from the pcf file and it seems to work. I haven't got citrix running over the vpn yet, still working on that
here is the announcement
on the samsung site under /global/business/mobile/solutions.html#security_vpn
it should be possible without decryption etc., unfortunately the "more information" text on the samsung site is not linked...

OK, so after two weeks of pain with calling Samsung tech support I was finally given the secret number for their UK head office, just to get me off their backs! HA!
I was told that these missing features are indeed scheduled for a future firmware release. They are going to try and find someone for me to talk to (apparently in Sales) who knows when these are scheduled to land.
Will let you know more if I hear back from them.
Yeah mine is rooted. I lasted 3 days when I brought it, I can't stand buying something and having certain features locked...
It's finally here !

and works fine (only the permanent icon in the status bar is a bit annoying)
Will this work for stock email on evo3d?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=729753
There is an app called enhanced email which will work. It will cost you less then $10 but when configuring the app for your server, you can 'uncheck' security policies and you will truly bypass your PIN requirement.
I tried to post information a few days ago but some douche that decided to be mommy or daddy or whatever decided instead to posts answers the OP, to instead posts his displeasure with bypassing the PIN and why..who cares..
I am answering your question and this is the site/info:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.qs.enhancedemail
It works well. I am using a custom version of the email.apk that has to be pushed and has security disabled. Search for that and I will try and find that one too..
Good luck..
Does this bypass the require device encryption as well?
I tried the OP but got an error. IDK if it's worth my $10 for that other app. I guess we pay with time rather than money...
Instead of starting a new thread is thought is ask here... For whatever reason my exchange account does not work with the 3D but worked fine on my OG EVO. Any thoughts?
Enhanced email will not work as my exchange account has to have device encryption.

My company has tight security and requires PIN and encryption. Lockpicker will not allow you setup the account if your device does not meet the requirements in the first place. Android currently doesnt have native encryption so the exchange server needs to be fooled. I use Touchdown, its $20 but it works great. I cannot comment on the other products mentioned. It has a 30 day trial before you have to buy anything.

Im suspicious of things you can buy jenga for 10p today but i can't understand why it wants phone call permissions? Why would a game want to know my phone number and call status? I can't think of a single reason, is there one?

Might have to do with this:
In Android Market Jenga Goto News Tab --> in "What new in this version":
"CHAT"
"Send a text message to your opponent with each move in an Online game"
Fair enough, i would just use the internet, not sure my what partner would need my phone number. Plenty of games use the internet without needing to know who im currently phoning, i think I'll leave this one!

Android apps that have silly requests for permissions is the worst aspect of Android.
I rooted and installed lbe security which allows me to block some permissions after the install.and asks with a pop up for requests at other times.
You have reason to be suspicious.
Good reason.
But most of it is just collected and used to better advertise to you.

I agree,
you have to be suspicious.
Even better than LBE (and the best if combined) is CyanogenMod with the possibility to block ALL the permissions (have to consider which you block btw => FC's)
But games want to know your phone status to be able to pause when a call is coming in, I guess... Not sure though.

How is an app that has automated settings for denied permissions going to help ME understand wich permissions i can block.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
The same goes with me...
You can block anything that a phone may not support (any developer that makes an app that crashes because you have no internet should not bee installed)
I remove everything I don't like (which is everything) and bring back what I'm willing to allow if it FC's.
Google needs to have developers give full reasons for required permissions.some developers already do that, they are the ones I support.other I email to ask and i am fully willing to rate badly if no response.
Some one should start a Android full disclosure group to work together to get the info every one wants.
And get start up control (or something like that) you would not believe how many apps fire up when you get a text or change your network connectivity.
If any one knows of a Android security website or forum post it here.I have not found one worth reading.
You suggestion seems like it could benifit loads of people. It seems like you already have a good grasp what 2 ask the developers for. Maybe you can make up an format for me and others who are willing to email devs to get some awnsers.

I've had my i9100 for 5 months and just rooted last month. Before that I was on windows mobile, after10 years using a wm phone I bailed on ms forever because of all the unacceptable "features"of windows phone. I believe in security and being anonymous as possible to big corporate interests.Android being open source was my only choice as apple is closed and militant about it, even more so than Ms. (and imagine my horror to see all the permissions on my phone)
But to be honest I know much more about what I don't like than I know how to fix it.
I do know that Google makes more money from advertising and knowing the actions and preferences of its users than any other company in history.the app developers make as much money or more from advertising than from selling their apps.and in sure some make money by learning what you like and don't.
And almost none of them will abandon that source of cash.
When ics is out and ready for my device I will go to cm9ics and it's security options built in the kernel.
I hope some one builds a locked down Android that randomly fakes all the privacy questionable permissions so all apps work.but I don't think that will ever happen. None of the big movers in the phone market want that.
As for finding out why a developer asks for a permission just mail them and ask.if you don't like the answer uninstall and rate it why you removed it.
some times permissions are there for options that you may love like your keyboard needing your contact list so it can spell your friends names. But is there really a reason for that keyboard to have internet access?
Carrier IQ brought into the open just what your phone might do with it you knowing.sadly most phones don't need an extra app to monitor your every move.
Don't even get me started on the"cloud" and all the bad things it represents.
as I learn more I'll share more but right now I feel like a very big man in a very small boat fishing for information in a very big sea.
Good luck out there
I totally understand your feelings. And agree on most of it. I wrote an essay about digital privacy a few years back. The thing is i know my every digital move is being monitered and stored. I think your best option is to build a cutom rom .. maybe 1 wich feed the apps with bogus information. That way you can get the apps you like help the developers get random data/ advertising revenue and stay anonimous.

So the latest update for the Disney game Where's My Water? Has started rolling out and I know that its getting alot of negative points for this update for two reasons:
1. They're charging for the additional levels ontop of the inital app charge. Now I know we're not gonna change that part but they are taking the piss quite a bit there. But more importantly...
2. The update allows full WAP message access (or words to the same effect) to my knowlede Disney is justifying it because of the app pirchase but that just doesn't make sense. Now I'm not particularly good and getting into app coding to find out what they're actually getting. So here's my propisition, can someone figure out why they need this permission. I love this little game I know its made by Disney etc. but its well built and fun I just want to know why they've decided they need this info.
Cheers all

I'm a developer on Where's My Water, though my focus is more on the native C++ side and not on platform specifics. I'm not 100% sure why we have WAP message access as a permission. It may be required by one of the in app billing libraries for one of the markets the app is published on. I'll look into it and get back to you. I can promise you it's for no malicious purpose. If it turns out we don't need it, we will remove it in the next update. Thanks for pointing it out.

However when I'm offline the game closes unexpectedly bit when I go back online it loads fine. Why can I not play this game when I'm not on wifi? I travel quote a bit and it wold be nive if I could play offline.

Hey everyone,
I looked into the WAP push issue and it turns out we don't need that. It must have snuck in as we have been rapidly iterating on the game and it seems to have just been overlooked. We have an update running through test right now which removes the WAP push requirement. Once again, we apologize for any confusion this may have caused.
@thedan55 - I will look into this. The game should not require an internet connection to run.

brilliant, thanks!
Compatibility
Hi all,
There's a third issue with this update, and I'm wondering if anyone knows whether it's likely to be related to the WAP permissions. Since the update, the game is now shown as incompatible with many tablet devices, including my Acer Iconia A100... I'm assuming WAP permissions wouldn't be available on Wifi only tablets.
To give full details, I bought the game over Christmas and had played through it all with no bother on my tablet. Yesterday I got the update on my phone, and when it didn't come through on the tablet I went to My Apps within the market, selected "where's my water" and got the "this app is incompatible with your device" message. Looking through the recent reviews, many tablet owners are in the same position.
Perhaps one of the developers could tell us if removal of WAP permissions will fix this, or if they're working on another way to fix it? It's very disappointing to pay for a game and then be unable to get the updated levels, especially when the game is so good! It's just not the same on the small phone screen. I would gladly pay for Cranky if I could get him on my tablet...
In case it helps at all, I should add that the free version, which I see also requires WAP permissions, has always been shown as incompatible with my tablet... I had to try it on the phone and was then able to use the tablet when I bought the full version.
Any info would be much appreciated.
I believe WAP intrinsically requires hardware telephony, so removing it should open it back up to you. We have found the bug you are referring to and will make sure to fix in the forthcoming update. Once again, we apologize for this mistake!
That's a brilliant response thank you for solving that problem for us all looking forward to the next update. Keep up the work because it really is a brilliant innovative game
Alk3ovation - great news, and thanks very much for taking the time to respond.
Heads up everyone, the update should be live. WAP push is removed and the game should now be playable on tablets again! Thanks!
Thank you!

Thanks, I've updated today immediately after seeing that WAP permissions were removed. I also changed my review back to the well deserved 5 starts. And I learned a new expression: "You three-ducked it!"
Thanks
Yes, thanks very much! I can confirm it's now updating fine on my Iconia tab, and Cranky got unlocked instantly when I paid for him.
Multiple Devices
Actually - I've just run into what may be a bug with using this update/purchase on multiple devices.
As above, I was able to buy Cranky no problem on my tablet. I just tried to get into those levels on my phone as well, and they were still showing as locked. When I tried to open them I kept getting "Your order is processing" followed by "An error occured".
I got round it by using the 'Clear Data' option from Manage Applications, which I didn't mind doing since I'd only played a couple of levels of Swampy on my phone - after that the new levels showed as unlocked immediately next time I opened the game.
Like I said, no biggie for me, but just letting you know in case it is a reproducible bug (I think I've seen a few other people mention the 'order processing' thing in reviews), since I'm sure some people will have played right through the game on their second device and won't want to lose all their progress.
Thats some brilliant news updated same soon as i heard gonna go get the extra levels now thanks again for all year you've done
