Updating from Alien4 to a current rom - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys I'm wanting to update my atrix from 4.5.91 running alien4 and faux123 v0.1.7 kernel to the current version of CM10. What's my best way to go about doing this. Currently right now the phone keeps asking me to update every hour and I can't stand it anymore. I haven't messed with the phone in a while and it looks like a lot has changed since i have been here last. From what i have gathered it looks like i'm safe to install romracers recovery and then install the most recent version of cm10. Please advise on how I should go about getting my phone up to date. Thank you! I will donate to whoever helps btw.

Wrong forum. Should be in Q&A.

first off, wrong section
second off, it looks like you already know what to do. fastboot install Romracer's recovery, or install the latest CWM from Rom Manager, then just install you .zip after wiping everything

Seemed like a dev related question to me...sorry. If someone could move it that'd be great.

mistakes happen, this is a section for active development, new things happening to our device. the Q&A section would be more fitting for any troubleshooting questions like this.

Need ROM and Kernel help

I rooted my T-Bolt using the Mac method described on Android Central Forums. I've been running the stock ROM and Kernel. I'm only going to do one custom install of a ROM and Kernel. I really hate having to keep up with the latest and greatest. Having to wipe every time and re-install everything.
I'd like recommendations on what ROM and Kernel to install and how to do it. I am tech savvy but have not been keeping up with what's going on in the Android rooting world. I am starting a new career next week and would like to get my T-Bolt set up now and forget about it.
I originally rooted my D1 so I could wireless tether but service was horrible. If I can still take advantage of wireless tether without any repercussions from VZW I'll stay rooted and do that. The only benefit I'm getting right now being rooted is Set CPU to help with my battery life.
So, I'd appreciate any help you guys can give me on this.
Thanks!

Can I let the OTA update over root and just not worry about it anymore?

Do not OTA over root! It is all over the forums and will mess up your phone if you do that.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13606062&postcount=2557
To install the update while rooted, follow that link. He also installing BAMF remix 1.6.3 which is the ROM that I am running. It is also my first ROM, and I picked it because it is a stable ROM, and I have yet to get a reboot after 4 days of using it.
The guys in that forum are really good about answering questions, but most of my noob questions were answered already. Don't forget that you can search inside a thread--that one is over 300 pages long.
Sorry, I forgot the Kernal: I am using this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1021404 It is also really stable and also sports a really good battery life, while keeping the phone snappy. Amazing work!
Do you have Titanium Backup and ROM manager? I believe that ROM manager also install ClockWork Mod Recovery, which you are going to need.
I would get the paid version of Titanium, and do a batch backup of your apps and system data so you don't lose all of your app data when you install the new radio and ROM.

[Q] [Q&A] About CM9 and restoring backup from CWM!!

Hey folks,
I just bought the white international SGS II and i'm loving it!
I previously had an Infuse 4g, so I am pretty experienced with flashing/backing up/ restoring...but I have questions/concerns regarding the I9100.
I am about to try out the CM9 Unstable, so I backed my current stock ROM up using CWM Manager 3.0 (I am on CF-Root 5.0) onto my Internal SD, as I do not have an external SD card.
Now, I have had bad experiences with CM7 with Infuse and ended up not being able to restore due to many problems like MD5 mismatch, different CWM version, and problems while restoring ( I think it said something like devblock??)
So I'm pretty worried about not being able to restore back to the backup i just made.
So correct me if I'm wrong folks,
1) Go into CWM, flash CM9(once? twice?), Gapps, Faceunlock,
2) Data wipe/factory reset
3) Reboot
and should I choose to restore back to the stock Rom backup,
just go into CM9's recovery and restore..?
will this method give me problems restoring? will I have different versions of CWM recovery from the one I have currently? Is there any way to check if my back up was made properly?
Thanks a lot folks! Appreciate it!
Edit: "Make sure you're already running ICS bootloader (if not, go to SamMobiles and flash XXKP2 bootloader)". Is this necessary? Cus I have seen some folks say that they've not and was fine installing CM9.
First the procedure:
1. Wipe
2. Install CyanogenMod 9
3. Reboot
4. Install CyanogenMod again
5. Install gapps and face-unlock
Worked for me every time.
Your backups should work unless there were errors while creating them.
If you want some more safety, you can create a new backup after flashing the Siyah-kernel. The latest version uses the same version of ClockWorkMod as CyanogenMod 9.
Whether you need to flash the bootloader or not, depends on whether you already have it or not. I'm running galnet-MIUI and already had the bootloader installed. I don't know how to tell if you have it.

Ok...
I did further research and found out that Nandroid backup backs up everything EXCEPT the kernel.
I'm pretty sure that CM has its own kernel...but will it be CWM 5.0.2.7(the one i made backup in.)?
If it's not, the correct steps for me to restore my nandroid back up is to
1)boot into download mode from CM9,
2) put the cf-root kernel that i used in the ODIN PDA, flash,
3) turn off phone, reboot into CWM, then restore my nandroid back up right??
Can anyone please confirm this method??
I only have this phone and I cannot risk soft-bricking or hard-bricking this beautiful device.
Thanks in advance!
Also, i made a back up in blue recovery of CWM 5.0.2.7..does that matter?

thanks for the reply,
so I must have the ICS bootloaders in order for CM9 to work?
ooo siyah kernel method... that makes it easier! haha thanks so much!
I will proceed to do that!
btw, how is CM9 working for you?
do you think you'll be able to use it as a daily driver now that NITZ is gone??
1. Afaik cwm backs the kernel up and restores it too. (afaik = 99.9% sure, in this case)
2. CyanogenMod ships with its own kernel.
3. The kernel is not cwm. ClockWorkMod is just the recovery that is integrated into the kernel. CyanogenMod 9 has cwm-recovery 5.5 (Siyah too btw)
4. You don't need to use download-mode to restore.

You must have ICS-bootleggers. He did not say that for fun xD.
Is it suitable as daily driver for me?
Nope.avi
Why?
Accelerometer is unresponsive, so it takes forever to flip your screen.
Battery drainage is horrible.
Camera isn't working properly.
And the biggest no-go for me:
The device gets way to hot when using it.

alright,
thanks for the information!
I'll flash the Siyah kernel
Btw,
Flashing CM9 Zip does not flash the ICS bootloader right?
so then if I want to restore to my GB 2.3.5, would I need to flash GB bootloaders before restoring via Odin??
If the zip would flash the loaders, he wouldn't have mentioned it.
They're backwards-compatible.

If you need to make a post in the Q&A forums about flashing CM9, then you are definitely not the sort of person who should be flashing it. It is in very much a beta stage and there is a very high possibility it will **** your phone up even if you have done nothing wrong. If that happens you need to be the sort of person with enough experience to solve the problem by themselves. If you are asking questions before you've even flashed it then really, it's not for you. Use CM7, at the moment it's better than CM9 in every single way.

Most people should not flame some one as long as they show they have at least tried to look for an answer first. Yes we were all new at one time but we all learned.
Like you said you Googled and found your answer. Not that hard.
Think it's bad now. Should have seen it a few years ago. Lol clutter up the threads with questions that the answers were found with a search. You got warned. Do it twice and you went on vacation for a few days to learn how to search. So the next time you think people are being too hard. Remember it is not as hlbad as it was.
When I search for the answer, I ended up here.
are these considered ICS bootloaders? If not, when would you flash them, because they are completely unmentioned in any of the instructions or FAQs

[Q] Is it worth installing NottachTrix4G?

I'm thinking on installing NottachTrix4G on my ATT Atrix. It's currently rooted, and unlocked, running 4.5.91.
I can't seem to find any reviews or recommendations for NottachTrix4G.
Can anyone comment on their experience with it, if you already have it? Also, is there an install guide somewhere?
Thanks
Welcome to the forums! Read the actual thread for Nottachtrix. The developer is very much so respected, and has a huge number of fans that use his ROM, your best bet is to just give it a shot and use it for a day or two to see if you like it. Don't forget to nandroid back up your current setup before wiping anything that way you you can very easily switch back if you are dissatisfied. All it takes is a SEARCH, figured I would be the nice one before you get flamed with a million "Use search!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" replys
Info
There is some info about Nottach Trix on here:

Also if you used and liked Darkside and/or Wet Dream you are 95% likely to enjoy Nottach Trix.

I moved from Wet Dream to Nottachtrix. So far, I've found the rom to be completely solid, all features working as advertised and without glitches on my end. At whatever point he releases his compatible ICS theme, I'll be a very happy camper.
About the most painless way to get up to 4.5.141, I'd say!
Is 1.2.3 the most current Version?

Unlocked bootloader, rooted, the dev post says Wet Dream was 4.5.140. Had to back up apps and SMS data, obviously, but you don't have to "get your phone back to stock" in order to flash this rom -- just make a nandroid backup and give it a shot.

Its very nice rom the wayt it comes and you can choose what you want to add or remove its really great you should try it.
You can also go in and freeze more processes as well and right now man i got about 520 mb free and scoring around 6300 on antutu.
Its not like cm7 builds but you can use webtop and an alternative if you want to stack stock mainly for me its because i use my webtop.
try it it's pretty cool
I thought wet dream was awesome, this ROM is even better. I just downloaded it today and no complaints.
+1 for you to download.

ROOT, UL BL, 2.3.4/4.5.91, Alien ROM
I accidentally hit the update option when it popped up on the screen instead of hitting later. Then I the wifi off on my phone and that prevented the update from being downloaded. I tried to do a couple of things to prevent it from downloading
1. Freezing Upgrader 2.3.4 using TiBu - This did not work.
2. Using CWM - Cleared cache etc and this did not do the trick either.
So, I finally gave up and used UncleCemka's guide to upgrade to 4.5.141 (2.3.6) and it was successful.
So, present state
ROOT, UL BL, 2.3.6/4.5.141, Stock.
Can I flash NottachTrix4G? The thing I miss the most is the WebTop over HDMI

Yes. It'll work fine. It doesn't mess with the webtop partition, so you'll need to re-do the HDMI exploit or flash the 2.3.6 webtop fruitcake which has that fix worked in.

Here you go. It's the Fruitcakes thread over in the dev forum.
now: you took the OTA update, which I'm pretty sure updated your webtop as well. The webtop fruitcake says 4.5.140; this may or may not be precisely the same version as your current one. With that in mind, I might try redoing the webtop-over-HDMI hack first since it's a pretty simple procedure and keeps your current version intact.

First time installing a custom ROM, I need some hand holding

Hey folks.
The S4 is my first smartphone. Ever. I rooted it a few weeks ago and have been playing with different tools and utilities. I love the extra control it gives me.
Been using Smartlauncher Pro as my launcher as well, but it doesn't give me the customization I want. I dig the UI though, it's minimalist just the way I like.
I've been keeping my eye out for ROM's I can try out, and I think I want to try Cynogen for the S4. However, I am terrified of destroying my investment. I've read horror stories of flashes gone wrong... I don't want to permanently brick my device.
Is there anyone here who can hold my hand while I install my ROM? I seriously have no idea what I'm doing, instructions or no.
...I sound so pathetic right now.
Thanks folks.

Do you have a custom recovery installed like TWRP or CWM? If you do all you need to do is download the rom (I put them on ext sd)....and gapps if your flashing cyanogen, boot into recovery, make a backup (I put this on my ext sd card too), wipe, flash rom, flash gapps and reboot.

Hi!
The first thing you need to find out is what build number you have. This will tell you if you are able to root and install recovery in order to put a new rom on the phone. Do NOT update your phone by the over the air update that is currently available! To find your build number go to settings: the more tab: about phone, then scroll down. If you have JDQ39.I545VRUAME7 then you are in the same boat as many of us and accidently did the upgrade which at this moment has no way to root. If you haven't done the upgrade than you need to find one of the many threads on here that will walk you through the process.
Hope this helps some, there are others on here that can give you a much more detailed walkthrough of how to root if you are on the correct older build.
The best advice I can give is to read the entire original post (OP) for the ROM you like, and as much of the thread as you can. 9 times out of 10 when someone has a problem with the ROM it's been discussed, and is often listed in the OP. Usually there are step by step instructions on installing the ROM. I believe there's a general ROM flashing guide in this forum somewhere as well.
Good luck and have fun :good:

That's good! You haven't been updated which means you can still flash ROMs. Are you familiar with both types of ROMs, TouchWiz and AOSP? CyanogenMod is an AOSP ROM, which will be completely different from what you're running right now, TouchWiz. You're rooted, but have you installed a custom recovery? You need one to flash ROM's, either TWRP or CWM. You can also make a nandroid backup in recovery, and if anything goes wrong, you can go back to exactly how you are now. Definitely read the OP of the ROM thread multiple times and follow the flashing instructions correctly.

If anything goes wrong with the flash in the next step, go to restore and you'll be back to how you are now.
Did you download the ROM to your phone along with Gapps? For AOSP Roms you need a separate gapps package, which is Google apps.

Worst case scenario, you have to use Odin to get back to stock. I used to keep a nandroid on my PC for just in case scenarios as well. One time on my GNex I flashed something really bad and had to adb pull everything off my phone, wipe the whole thing, and start over.

Yeah you'll have to download a nightly, I don't think there are any stable versions out yet. Are you downloading it directly on your phone? Or on your PC?

Thread cleaned of useless comments.
Thread is also closed - as XDA, even though full of helpful and nice people, is not a direct support site.
Users are expected to do some reading before they post and blatantly ask for hand holding. And, as you have seen, other users have a tendency to not be so nice and make trolling comments because of that.
This is a development site and is about development - so, please, study up first, then post questions based from what you have learned.

Need help making a couple choices

Hey guys, so the last phone I rooted and had a bootstrap on with custom roms was the Motorola Droid x2. We couldn't even get into the kernel. So with that being said I've acquired super user on my g3 months ago to freeze apps. But now I don't depend on my phone like I did then for work. So I want to do the whole thing and I'm unsure what choices to make. I'm not looking for a guide for installing stuff (at least not yet ) just trying to get suggestions and hopefully good recommendations.
So here's the main point for the post
TLDR!!!!!
Current android version 5.0.1
kernels- unlock it? Change it? Not sure what all you can actually do with that.
Bootstrap- clock work mod? Or any other one can't think of names but need something to load roms
Rom for battery and power- cyanogenmod is what I use to run on the x2 not sure if it's still one of the best?
Anything else I missed that I should get and check out?
Thanks in advance
Put TWRP custom recovery on your phone with the autorec TWRP app by @bender_007, in the General section of the non-variant specific G3 sections. Once you give the app superuser permissions it looks like it's hung up but give it 10-30 seconds because it's backing up your current recovery. Then click the button to install TWRP. Download the latest TWRP v2.8.7.0 from its thread also somewhere in the G3 sections, and flash it from your current TWRP.
I use @xdabbeb 's VS985 v2.0 ROM, which is based on the latest official LG ROM, build 35B, based on Android 5.1.1. Very happy with it, very smooth and great on battery.
I haven't heard the term bootstrap with regards to custom recoveries. I'd suggest just calling them custom recoveries.
Thanks for your input it's been a while after I read it I was like yep it's custom recoveries lol thank you again
