Screen doesn't auto-rotate anymore - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I bought my S3 in late June and all was fine until a couple of weeks ago when I noticed that my screen no longer rotates
1. Can't view my photos in landscape anymore
2. Can't view Youtube videos in landscape anymore (full screen)
A few days ago I turned off Screen Rotation and left it off for a couple of days. I then turned it back on and it worked...for half an hour
I dunno what I'm supposed to do. I try to calibrate my phone (Setting -> Display -> Gyroscope calibration)
I'm also wondering if it has something to do with installing Apex Launcher and then uninstalling it..
Please help

Try playing a game then requires accelerometer?

I recommend restarting device and as already mentioned try a game that uses the accelerometer
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app

As mentioned above try to play a game that uses the accelerometer...Most racing games out there should do it. If they don't work, your accelerometer might be problematic. Though if I were you I would also try backing up the phone and doing a full wipe to see if there are still problems (but of course you'll have to be on root). Seems suspicious that the problems only appeared after you switched on screen rotation again.

I found this app can do all orientations. Try and check whether it works.
Orientation Control
Or try Sensor Tester

Hi
If you type *#0#* into the phone dialer you will access a test mode. Within that panel of options is a 'sensor' tab, which will give you access to the accelerometer test (top one).
If the image doesn't automatically switch to panoramic then you may have a fault.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app

Alright, I'm gonna go through each suggestion and post the results:
1) Try a game. Could you recommend a specific game please? I'm not much of a gamer and I'm not too keen on racing games so I dunno too many
2) Restart the phone. I've already tried that at least a dozen times and it still doesn't work
3) Test mode. The orientation of the pic did not change so I'm assuming that means that I do have a prob with the accelerometer
Now assuming I take it to the repair center, will they actually repair/replace the accelerometer or give me a new phone?
EDIT: I'm thinking of doing a factory reset because I'm wondering if the prior installation of the Apex Launcher messed up the phone in some way. What do you guys think?

I have already tried the test mode (check the post you have quoted) and the orientation of the picture did not change from portrait to landscape :/

I'd advise you to try a factory reset before returning your phone as invariably they will send it off for repair for 2 weeks rather than giving you a new one.
Don't forget to backup though

Just wanted to post a quick update
I factory reset my phone and... the accelerometer still isn't working
So it seems that the phone will be going to the repair center after all

I had the same issue and I tried every step and fix suggested. None of them worked. I have finally got it to work. I held my phone about waist high and dropped it on the rug. When I picked it up the gyro was working. I'm not trolling you, this seriously worked for me. YMMV.

Few days ago I had the same issue... I then searched the net for answers and one of the options was to enter download mode. And to my surprise it worked. Hope it helps

Was having the same issue and came here. Tried using a game, restarting phone, nada. So I went into display settings and saw that Auto Rotate was turned off. Not sure how that happened.
Sometimes it's the simple things.

[Q] Accelerometer stopped working! Please help!

Hi guys I'm on bionix 3 with JACs OC kernel with the latest voodoo and color fix installed. Since I installed the newest kernel my rotation has stopped working in all my apps. I downloaded an app to test my orientation sensor, everything is set to 0. I also dropped my phone after I installed the kernel so maybe that could be the reason...any ideas? Is there a way to test if items software or hardware related? If it is damaged hardware, should I unhappy and go to t mobile? any advice is greatly appreciated thanks!
Revert your phone to complete stock and see if it begins to work again. If it doesn't, then your best bet is to bring it back to Tmo.

thanks ill try to remove the lagfix and ODIN back to stock.
if i were to take it to Tmo and the stock rom didnt fix it, would they replace it under warranty, you think?
I'm almost positive they will replace it. Just don't tell them you dropped it!

Happened to me, requested a new phone because it would not orient even after wiping.
So I get the new vibrant and go to town and wipe again, removing superuser su busybox, when in one app I realize it orients....
It had been on lagfix and orientation worked. I moved it to ext2 on sdcard, orientation worked.
So I blame an app or something else I have not redone on this replacement.
Btw check your compass, stuck at north too isn't it?
Edit: Wasn't me knocking it off the couch if a wipe fixes it.....

some apps automatically put the phone in landscape, like the youtube app once you watch a video, but if you press back and get to the main youtube app page it will stay in landscape but it wont rotate to portrait at all until you get to the home screen which i have locked onto portrait....ill wipe and odin to stock and see what happens, but what did you t-mobile when you gave it to them? and how do exchanges work exactly? ive never done one before with a phone, do they switch you out right then and there or do they mail you a replacement?
Thanks guys for your suggestions =]

If you turn off auto orientation and exit your media apps, phone is in portrait, makes it more usable until you wipe phone.
I am not sure the stores do it past the 2 weeks, you call tmo and they might ask you to try things until they send you a new phone via ups, you put old one in a box and put the return label on and drop it off at a ups store to send it back, if you take more than 7 days, you get to pay for the replacement
pretty painless process unless you are impatient and say sure, charge me $21 for express shipping.
hm ODIN'd back to stock, works like a charm, thanks guys! must have had a bad flash or something...

Hmm that is strange, but there were a lot of weird things happening when I had the rom and kernel combo I had before. I had long wake up lag, intense battery drain, and no rotation, but I odin'd, rooted, flashed the same things again and everything works fine now, I even titanium restored some apps and settings ran fix permissions and nothing weird happening yet. Idk what could have caused it before...
My accelerometers are very flaky -- I have been assuming it's related to my nearly-useless compass and my completely non-functional GPS. I use "Digital Speed" whenever I drive my '55 (which has a broken speedo cable at the moment) and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Completely random, even after a fresh reboot.
Same problem here. Running Bionix 1.4. First noticed a problem when I installed a game that needed tilt to operate, it wouldn't work. Then I checked and the homescreen won't flip. Test apps show "no data" or "INIT" and no actual values for the sensors. I'm using the OC Voodoo version, is this a common thread with the problem?
Don't restore system setting from backup. It can kill the orientation. This is my experience.

Didn't.
I upgraded to Bionix 1.5 without Voodoo and the problem is gone. I thought maybe the 1.5 update fixed it, but another user is reporting the problem while on 1.5. I believe the Voodoo kernel is to blame at this point.

A full wipe worked for me, then again i never used anything too crazy. His experience suggests you should try it, oddly enough for me running the calibration tool, the error message talked about a stale nfs file
Reminds me of deleting battery statistics to reset the battery meter on other phones......and the full wiping/odin flashing nukes it.
Everything works fine on the replacement too with the same apps and fixes (minus lag fix) as before (orientation working wasn't found to be working before i already got a replacement on order :/ ), only thing i hate is gmaps 4.5.1 causing a load of 8.x+, enough to once get everything killed (uptime did not change although everything was reloaded, media was scanned as if it had rebooted) and a shut down the other time.

[Q] Auto-rotate / Landscape mode no longer working

Hi all, I'm new to the forums and to android. I've done some searching and haven't been able to find a solution to my problem, at least in the case of the S3.
I've had my phone just over a week and hadn't noticed any issues until today I realized that landscape mode wasn't working in the web browser. It doesnt seem to want to flip to landscape in other instances I would expect it to either such as in SMS or memo pad. I've tried the gyroscope calibration, tuning auto-rotate on/off, even did a factory reset to see if that would work.
The shortcut to use the camera by tilting to landscape in the lock screen still works so I'm trying to rule out the possibility of a complete hardware malfunction.
I found a post here talking about a similar problem solved by deleting a system file and using a couple shell commands but it's about another galaxy and I can't find the target calibration files in the S3 so I think it's a safe bet that they're different. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=816131&page=2
Anyway I guess my question is does anyone know what the problem might be and if theres a way to fix it? If there is a way to calibrate the sensors using a terminal or something like what was described in that thread I wouldn't mind giving that a shot, but if there is a simpler solution then that would be great too.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the reply. Stock launcher, rooted using MrRobinsons bell images here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426 . Have also flashed the original stock rom without root and had the same problem.

I updated Insert Coin Rom to 3.0 and my camera hasnt worked since. updated tuesday, and only went to use my camera yesterday and discovered it freezes on opening. flashlight toggle in my notifications bar also causes system UI to crash.
switched to Anonorom this morning, factory reset, restored apps + data from Titanium Pro, same thing. camera and flashlight both crash my system UI.
which sucks cause previous IC rom was great.
any help would be awesome. otherwise i guess i'm either flashing rom's or doing a full factory reset and restoring manually i guess..

Also started having this issue last week, more than a month since I got my 4.1.2 OTA from T-mobile.
From what I experienced, both incidents when I was out, were in low light, and after I enabled low light mode within the camera controls.
There would be a freeze, then app crash returning to the homescreen.
There doesn't seem to be a lot of info on this, and I'd really like to know what is causing it.
I have a feeling it is a setting in the touchwiz camera... because other camera apps (vignette, eyeem) launch the camera fine and without issue.

Software Update 1.27.531.8 available today

I just checked for Updates today and got this update: 1.27.531.8. (It was not there yesterday when I checked).
It says it's a System enhancement and bug fix update. (screenshots attached)
My phone was on 1.27.531.7 earlier.
Not sure what all things are fixed or enhanced. I do not see anything as of yet.
Hopefully the 'Back and Home button not responding always' issue is fixed.
Wow...Googling this reveals...nothing! You might be the first
I also got this update and could not find any info about it.
Well it does look like the 'Back and Home buttons response' issue is fixed! Normally for me the Back button would stop working like almost every minute of using the phone. Well I used it for about 10 minutes now and the Back button seems to be working fine so far!!
Earlier, just hitting the Back button a couple of times repeatedly would cause it to stop working. Now it seems to be working good. This is really great!
I have the update as well. It looks like it is not the same update as 1.29 because it is like 220mb less in size lol I wonder if we will ever get that update or if we are going straight to 4.2.2 with those updates baked in.
Capacitive buttons fixed. My screen resolution seems slightly higher. Hard to explain.
Sent from my HTC One using xda premium
The clock widget I use appears slightly smaller in size but sharper. A lot of the blink feed tiles that had a slight blur have resized the image to appear sharper. Phone seems slightly more snappy just overall.

Okay, finally get the update.
It seems I have uninstall some stock apps which are causing the update to interrupt...
This problem solved once I reset my phone to default.

Hi everyone, I am curious am I the only one around right now that has trouble updating this one?
Once I select install and it reboot to a phone icon, then it stops, showing a red triangle above the phone
Here's the picture I cannot post the link...;(
i.imgur.com/svGnMpa.jpg
Any solution to this?
(Just got my phone yesterday, didn't root or anything.)
Quick question my HTC One is rooted and I got the update but it won't update am I unable to get the update? When I try to install it just goes to Recovery and then I rest it and I get that it didn't install.:crying:
Our is their a way I can just flash the update?
http://www.ubergizmo.com/2013/06/t-mobile-htc-one-receiving-minor-software-update/
I've not noticed any difference except for the capacitive buttons. Still wish they'd fix audio notifications being sent through speakr and headphones
Too bad that the update didn't fix the Google Now location service bug . Wonder when or who is going to fix that issue.
I tried two of the 4.2.2 roms today and neither of them had the option for Wifi Calling (TrickDroid and Android Revolution). I'm not sure if it was because the ROMs are based on the international leak...
It's a fix for the dual Mic's. It helps noise canceling while on speaker phone. It may address other issues as well but that is the purpose of the update.

* - Let's seperate out the bugs.
* - Stock only please. If you're running a custom ROM - DO NOT POST HERE.
* - This isn't a help thread about installing updates...
* - If you think you found a bug it is VITALLY important you list steps to reproduce the bug.. If others can't reproduce it.. It's not a bug.
* - Also do not report anything if you have GEL installed. GEL is not "stock" for the N10 and any problems are not KRT160 problems.

Confirmed..
Hey developers.. Would you consider this an Android problem or a developers app not compatible with 4.4 problem?
I would report this to the app developer. He will be able to file a more detailed bug report if not fix it himself
I cannot drag and drop app icon from App drawer to the Home screen. Every time I try this I just load the app. It doesn't matter for how long I'm holding the app icon. Maybe this is due to the low battery, which is doubtful. Reboot doesn't help. Please kindly let me know if I'm not the only one with such weirdness.
This is definitely some malfunction since per Android 4.4 User Guide (http://www.google.com/help/hc/images/android/android_ug_42/Android-Quick-Start-Guide.pdf):
To add an app icon to a Home screen:
1. Go to the Home screen where you want to place the app.
2. Touch theAll Apps icon.
3. Swipe from right to left, if necessary, to find the app you want.
4. Touch & hold the app until the Home screen appears, slide it into place, and lift your finger
Edit:
Found out that this only happens when the device is plugged with USB cable. Maybe this is a feature not a bug...

Has anyone noticed that since the upgrade to 4.4 that your device is staying awake? Seems to be caused by Android system. It doesn't sleep anymore and it's draining my battery because of this. Anyone found out what the problem is? I read on another forum that it's being caused by the Google Keyboard that is shipped with 4.4, if I change the keyboard with the 1,2,3 layout, will this solve the battery drain issue? This is weird man......

Haven't had a look at battery stats or anything but I got over 6 hours screen on time yesterday, so I can't say i've got a problem with battery life
Here's a screenshot I made. To verify it, I disabled the keyboard for a moment, and indeed, the device went to sleep. I then re-enabled the keyboard and again the device won't sleep! Without use I lost 5% of my battery in just 30 minutes. Anyone knows how I can update the keyboard with the newest version?
I think I solved the problem. I turned off Hotword detection under Google Now settings, and then Voice. Seems to have done the trick! Now when the screen is switched off the device goes to sleep. This is weird though, it should switch off when the screen is off but it doesn't! So, I think this is a legitimate bug that needs fixing! Can someone give this a try and report back if this solution helped?
