Hot phone & Battery drain = reboot - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I'm running resurrection 2.6.1 on my sgsII with cyanogen kernel.
Recently I've been finding the phone has warmed up to a worrying temp so I remove battery &let it cool down. More recently I've been finding the phone had turned itself off, no obvious reasons I can find.
Bbs does not give me anything to go on, it seems to only have info going back maybe an hour when actually the phone has been on for 4 hours+
Anyone having similar issues?
Thanks for reading
D.

Similar issues. Gets hot and shows wrong random values for battery level. Tried resetting Fuel Gauge chip from Extweaks but that seemed to add to the problem frequency.

Have you tried anything to fix it?
I'm thinking of new kernel, maybe SiyahKernel, anyone have an idea?

I had this issue with my old xperia x10 phone.. it used to get so hot that I had to keep it in refrigerator to cool it down. I tried returning to stock, flashed lower version of android put my 6 months old backup but nothing worked. Finally one day the phone died and the service center people told me that the whole motherboard must be replaced. So, its worth if you have warranty to get it checked.

I'll give you more information to go on then..
I've cleared delvik cache, wiped partition &fixed permissions.
The problem is intermittent, if I leave it alone for a while it will turn itself off, but never while I am using it.

Thats a rogue app causing the high android sys.
+1, I've seen this on 2 handsets.
Using GSam Battery Monitor, then clicking on app usage ->android system -> manage -> clear defaults
The above seems to stop the issue after a reboot. I've not seen it happen again since I did that.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but 9hrs and 47% left doesn't seem like a problem... if you take your phone and leave it on (with screen off) and wait until it dies then charge and turn on you will see that the "system" eats almost all your battery. There is nothing wrong with your phone unless you used it a ton and the system still eats all your battery which If that is the case and it's been 9 hours and had 47% battery then I would think you were doing MUCH better than most, imho.

I've got the same problem. Only yesterday, mine was over 65%! My phones horrible on battery life. Some things definitely up
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
When I click manage it won't allow me to clear defaults...
And this began at around the 50% mark and as soon as it starts my battery starts dying way quicker
Do these screen shots help?

any ideas? seems like xda needs to be manualy killed or it ends up using alot of resources in the bacground
I have seen the same on my phone, but it has not happened consistently enough for me to narrow down the possible cause...
Happened to me once so far. Charged my phone to full and went to work. I didn't use my phone for anything other than to check the time. I started noticing that the back of the phone was getting very hot, more so than when charging. I pulled my phone out and the battery was waaay down :
Hasn't happened since (fingers crossed).
Edit: I guess mine wasn't the Android system, but cell standby.

It seems ok for me. The most eating up my battery seems to be cell standby

The fix for the cell standby drain is easy, see here: http://techsplurge.com/10665/solution-samsung-galaxy-s3-cell-standby-battery-drain-problem/ As for the android system drain it seems to have resolved itself. I still get alot of kernel wakelocks from bam_dmux_wakelock though

Sg3 turns itself on after turning off

Recenlty found out that if i turn my phone off it instantly turns itself back on, but if its plugged in charging it stays off any ideas people

nope that didnt work damn it lol, its not a big issue at the mo, but on resale point of view its not good
Check your settings.
Go into developer options and make
Sure " stay awake " isn't checked,
As this forces the screen to stay
when on charge
Sorry just re read your post

Which Rom are you using??
This problem started when I flashed the 3rd preview build of cm10.. after that I flashed back to stock ics but still the problem was there.
If you put the battery back in immediately after pulling it off, the phone will turn on again by itself.. you have to wait for some time and the put the battery back.

yes it did start happening after i went back to stock ics
I had the sam problem. I used task manager to vlose all aps, cleared ram memory, went to settings applications and stopped most of the aps. Then i turned the phone off - removed batery and everything was okay after it...

I will try that see what happens, took battery out for 2 hours see if that worked and nothing
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Try re-flashing? Otherwise return it.. should be covered by the warranty
Had the the same issue, only a complete wipe solved it for me.

Go to settings-storage-other and tick everything. You will loose some data. Then reboot to download mod and flash firmware again. Now the problem is solved!
All sorted thanks to uvaman, used task manager shut down running apps took battery out and left over night, thank to everyone that gave advise

Happens to me too occasionally, although its rare, random and varies depending on the ROM I'm using. So it's pretty ramdom yeah... I'm currently using MROM and I don't remember it happening yet.

I've had this issue in the past as well as random reboots, I believe it had to do with a root zip I flashed for the 4.5.91 update, but I can't be certain. I SBF'd the original 4.5.91 firmware, flashed the CWM recovery, and flashed the latest CM7 along with the Deepblue fix stated HERE. I understand that a lot of people have seen this and says it shouldn't do anything, so I'll let you decide if it works or not.
After doing the above steps, I've solved the issue with the random reboots, but still get the system locks forcing a battery pull, though only very rarely (maybe 1 a month/3 weeks).

Try a new kernel for your room, i've experienced this a lot of times and it was so annoying because i couldn't use my phone as a music player. I tried several kernels until i found one that doesn't go to deep sleep of death.
I would recommend faux123 work, are very stable.
Remember to flash the correct one for your rom, otherwise you'll get stuck in the motorola logo until you flash another compatible kernel.
Good luck
thanks for that advicee... the kernel is not changing anything. random reboots are not really a problem. deep sleep of death comes with every kernel even faux.
what i didn't tried yet...is reverting to stock. ...
Sent from my MB860 using xda app-developers app
It is the sleep of death. Try increasing your minimum cpu speed to one setting above the lowest (456? - I can't remember the exact number).
already done. i think the deep sleep is slower than the min setting....

[HELP] Extreme Battery Drain

Hello there.
For the last few days, the battery of my phone is draining at an exceptional rate even without use, power saving switched on and everything else turned off.
Yesterday morning it drained 5% in 3 minutes!
Any help will be appreciated.
Running stock 4.1.2
Unrooted

Buy new battery.
Any way I can test whether something is wrong with battery or software?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
Please search before posting things as vague as that. No one knows anything about your problem. Are you using the phone when, or is that idle drain? Regardless of that, see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2217943. Chances are someone else has already got the same problem as you especially if it's battery - related, so please search for it.

3.Reflashed stock Jb 3 times now.

[Q] My note shuts off as soon as Rom boots..

Hello, I am having a problem with my note and it is scaring me. As soon as my note boots it is shutting off completely and restarting. I was just using it with fine last night. I had the uber kernel installed and oced to 1.9 cpu but it wasn't even that hot.. After thinking it was the Rom that was causing this I did a complete wipe and flashed the candykat Rom, upon boot when the cyogenmod log in screen appears it shut down and rebooted again.. twice. I'm hoping nothing is damaged internally. I am able to stay in the recovery just fine without any problems. Please help me.. And when I say shutdown I mean insta black screen and reboot..

Idk if I will do that lol. But now I think I know what the problem is. So yesterday I was using my note and it shut off. The battery was full and when it restarted the battery all the sudden dropped to 60%. It turned off again and went to 1%... I thought it was glitching when it said 1% but after amin it shutdown due to low battery. One thing I then tried was having my phone plugged in while using it and I played games, used my phony heavy and what do you know.. It didn't turn off. So I'm thinking I have a bad battery. PS: I took my note to a pawn shop and they said the battery was bloated. He said it wasn't supposed to spin while on a flat surface.. What do you think?
It seems while I'm playing a game the battery heats up and that causes shutdown cause I'm typing this and I don't have my charger plugged in and its fine..

Yes a bulging battery is a sign that it's bad. Batteries are cheap. Especially on eBay. I buy an extra battery and charging dock for all my devices. This way one is always fully charged, and I don't have to plug in the device unless I need Odin or to file transfer. I learned that lesson 2yrs ago when my usb charging port went bad.

Yeah it has to be the battery. Earlier today when I was using my note it said low battery at 2%, I looked at my phone afew minutes later and it said 4%?? Lol. The charger wasn't even plugged in.

If my power button was stuck would I see the shutdown menu before it rebooted, shutdown, reboot, sleep, etc? I'm just trying to make sure my battery is the problem.. I don't want to deal with a power button..
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
No you won't see the power menu. It just keeps restarting. I don't think you'd even see your home screen because it restarts before the rom loads.

Oh well then. That's awesome because I'm able to use my phone for more than 5 mins without it shutting down. It usually shuts down when I start playing a game or something intensive. So it has to be the battery! I'm really happy.

Well my phone shut off again when using another not as bad but still a bit puffed out note battery. I don't understand what's going on here... I'm scared to buy a new one thinking that It won't work still... my phone never turns off as much when the charger is in... But guaranteed with battery only. Less than 10 mins.
