Flashed to MetroPCS want to install custom ROMS - HTC EVO 3D

My friend recently got a used Sprint HTC Evo 3D which he got flashed over to MetroPCS, he was wondering if this would affect anything for flashing custom ROMs to his phone. He wants to make sure if flashing a ROM would not kick him out of the MetroPCS service or does nothing and just flashes the ROM like any other EVO 3D with the Sprint service.

On Metro since 2/2012

I have been on metro and the tech flashed it . I have the evo 3-d 1.50 S-on Locked, and it was returned to me with rom manager installed and
S-On and locked and only getting 3g. I then proceeded to unlock through evohacks instructions and I finally got root through fastboot
usb commands, installed CWM recovery and flashed roms. Be careful,IMO one should be totally S-Off and go back to 1.40 hboot in order to
flash practiacally any evo rom and especially seperate kernals. I once installed the Antrax kernal on a rom through flash UI and had some trouble, but I always do BACK -UP NANDROID BU FIRST and foremost. Sometimes it works but you have to really read and read and read in order to understand whats happening on your internal OS and internal USB/External USB--ETC. Take your time and read what others with ur phone and same set-up go through!. Patience..is the KEY. Alll these Mods here will help you but they have to know what exactly U want or need. Learn terminology too, all the Abbs' Etc. Don't forget to give praise where and when it is due. Ima noob and will probably always be one
but some of these moderators are PROS. IMO probably All are...
Hope this helps. LUCK!

good info here!!! I am flashed to boost, and the only thing that screwed me over was when I downgraded to hboot 1.4 and ran revolutionary to obtain s-off, it wiped my flash, and I had to get the phone reflashed...

[Q] A few rooting questions

Almost a month ago I bought an HTC Evo 3D (My first android phone) and I want to root it but I have a few questions before I do so.
1. Do I have to back up everything on my phone before I actually root the phone? I know it's always a good idea to back up before doing things like this but I really want to know is in the process of rooting my phone will I lose everything (Contacts or anything that's not on my SD card)?
2. What ROM should I use keeping in mind I want to retain the 3d functionality of my phone? Alls I really want right now is a ROM without CIQ but still has HTC Sense3.0.
Please note I have researched this online and came across a few articles on how to actually do the rooting (here and here). I am thinking I don't want to use HTC's method of unlocking the bootloader.
My phone's info:
Carrier: Sprint
Phone: HTC Evo 3D (duh)
Hboot version: 1.5

Well if your Hboot 1.5 then your stuck with HTC dev method nothing you can do about it unless you wanna wait a year for another method.
I never backed any of my stuff up since after you root no point in it. If you wanna unroot you need to have the stock recovery zip which is easy also the stock PC86IMG.ZIP and fastboot oem lock and your unrooted
Not hard to do....
There is really no need to backup all of your stuff to root, as you will not lose anything. I recently rooted my 3d which is hboot 1.5 using the htc dev method, (which as said is the only method currently for hboot) and found it rather easy to follow. Although this doesnt give you the highly sought after "s-off" but it does give you complete root access to your phone, the ability to use apps that require root access and install custom roms/kernels Definitely install a custom recovery and go ahead and do a nandroid backup there, that will backup your entire phone. MAKE SURE you do that before flashing any custom roms/kernels.
As for suggesting a rom I can't really suggest one right now. I have only been researching/using evo3d roms for a few weeks now and to keep functionality the only way is to stay with a sense rom, as most aosp roms are not quite there in terms of wifi/4g/camera/3d capabilities etc. There are plenty of sense roms out there with removed bloatware, and custom themes. Just browse the appropriate development subtopic for your carrier and check out some of the threads listed, most of the devs will be there to answer any questions you may have. But just check a few out, and if you dont like them, no biggie just restore or move on to a different rom. happy rooting.

If you are on hboot 1.5, the htcdev method WILL factory reset your phone, meaning you will lose everything. So only you can answer that question, if you dont want to backup your data, are you ok with losing everything?

As you are new here, you might not know that you don't have to flash a rom when rooting. You can just stay on the stock rom if you want to, and enjoy the benefits of being rooted while on the stock rom. But if you want to flash a rom without CIQ, most of the roms in the dev section already removed it, and the ones with sense 3.0 are labeled so in the titles. As to which one, well that's the beauty of rooting, there is no "best rom" for anyone. Just make a backup of your current rom, and flash a new one. If you dont like it, restore your backup.
I am thinking I don't want to use HTC's method of unlocking the bootloader.

Well there is no other way of rooting hboot 1.5.
Just do it.

i'm not sure how to root on hboot 1.5(if thats what you have) or how to flash with it. but personally, i like using mikrunney v1.06 as my daily rom. everything functions correctly (except 4g i think) but that's not big deal.
and with backing up, everyone else answered that already

Replacement EVO 3D - NEED root HELP

Hello everyone
I am new to this forum, well I have been downloading roms for about 6 months but I registered today, anyhow I took my evo 3d to the sprint repair center the other day because my lcd went out, that's what the sprint employee had told me anyway and so two days later I received a replacement evo 3d, it was hboot 1.5 obviously and I took it home and installed the 2.17.651.5 RUU because sprint puts a version of the 2.17.651.5 ruu on their evo 3d's that does not communicate well during the unlock process of HTCdev.com, so here is my problem, after flashing the ruu I unlocked my bootloader via the htcdev unlock method, and began to flash my first custom rom, and I have run into the same problem over and over, I would boot into clockwordmod recovery via fastboot and then flash the rom after performing a super-wipe and every single time I would get a boot loop, no matter which rom I used, it would boot up and get to the setup screen and boot loop constant boot loop, every single rom I tried, I have not experienced this before when flashing roms, I then looked at a few threads of the roms I tried to flash and one recommended that I extract the boot.img from the zip and flash it via fastboot, some people say that you are required to do that with hboot 1.5 but in the past when I used my old evo 3d I never had to do that and it was hboot 1.5 s-on, please if someone has an answer I would gladly appreciate it, thanks in advance

the problem is just that.....youre s-on..you either must do the wire trick...or unknownforces downgrade method to obtain s-off and then flashing will be easier bc of permissions needed to write to the boot partition...

That may be true but there are a lot of users on this forum who are s-on and still flash plenty of roms, most roms do not require you to be s-off and it's not a normal boot loop, the phone starts up and then gets to the setup screen and that's when it reboots, most boot loops occur at the boot animation, so why is this happening now when my old when which was hboot 1.5 s-on worked fine when flashing roms, someone please help

youre right they do flash...they use an app called flash gui...unless you want to manually go and flash the boot image through fastboot

I know all of that, you are clearly not understanding me, I owned an evo 3d that was rooted and was hboot 1.5 s-on, I flashed roms for 4-5 months, I am not a noob, my replacement evo 3d that I got through sprint and unlocked the boot loader, I am flashing roms exactly the same way and I am getting boot loops at the setup screen for every rom, maybe next time you will read my entire post and not just skim through it

well then...maybe you should also try scanning the posts better... if youre upset that you have 2.17 and think thats the issue...do a downgrade...oh wait..you already knew that now if you had 2.17 before and had no problems maybe its not the phone...oh btw...my phone is a replacement from asurion as well...i had no issues doing what i needed.. now maybe...JUST maybe someone might know a bit more than you and you should try not to argue with them

I didn't really believe that all evo 3d's act differently until I got my replacement. Now I know that their not all the same, even when they have the same hardware version. I'm sure you can see that too. You just have to figure out what works for that phone. I think a sure fire way to get a good install when you have s-on is to use fastboot to boot to recovery. Have you tried that yet? It doesn't sound like you've got a normal bootloop and I haven't encountered your issue before but fastbooting to recovery is worth a try. I'm sure you've heard this a lot but I'm gonna suggest it anyway, get s-off, you won't regret it.
Also, does the phone reboot like that after you run an ruu?

What wikdNoob said. Some phones do fine flashing ICS ROMs with S-on, but from my reading of the forums, many phones bootloop when flashing ICS ROMs with S-on. Since you are 1.5 S-on, you should do the wire trick to get S-off.
I've read so many times how people use the same procedures to flash the same ROM with the same radios, hboot, etc where one gets bootloops and the other does not. Each phone is different.

you really should go s-off, I thought the wire trick method would be difficult it was literally the easiest thing I have ever done, I don't know if you are familiar with JTAG xboxes, I used to jtag a **** load xbox's back in the day, in high school, so all this **** is easy, no soldering involved with this ****

Noob with some questions as its been forever since flashing anything

Hey All. I Did my first flash ever with my Evo3d and the Viper Rom way back when it first came out. With the Rev tool to get unlock and S off. Now Ive had to have my phone replaced due to a bad digitizer and id like some ICS fun. But the Phone is now Hboot 1.50. Ive had Ramjet explain some stuff but still having some confusion. I did the HTC unlock and the phone is unlocked. I now need to install/flash 4EXT recovery. I assume this is something I need to flash to the bootloader/Fastboot Vs just a download (which I did get the paid for app.) Ive been r4eading some of the stuff here and there. But still a little lost. Then I guess I need to root? then I can S off? Sorry for the dumb questions and being noob about this. Just wanting to learn/relearn the right ways. I know once I see it I can handle it just fine. Thanks for the help.

I'm actually on a sprint based cdma phone.
Have you looked at the HTC Unlock Guide (also in my signature)? Post 4 I think covers flashing the recovery & SU correctly.
- once unlocked, use fastboot commands to push the the recovery.img to the phone, boot to recovery and flash SU. Reboot.= Htc Unlocked stock rooted rom. (Note: there is also a link to the hboot differences thread you should read after getting s-Off).
Then you can use Jbear to get S-Off for Gingerbread/2.17 base.
MeanRom 2.6
Thanks mpgrimm
Id really like to end up with ICS is the direction im heading but im sure that will help. Thanks!! May have some further questions. Hope thats all right?
Sure thing. I haven't done the Jbear Wire Trick (I did the hboot 1.50 downgrade) but I can point you where to go.

Are you S-OFF or S-ON. If your S-ON you need S-OFF For this now if your S-OFF. This will wipe everything from your phone i believe and WILL lock your bootloader again (Meaning you have to root the phone again) if your sure your gonna do that heres the link (Take the GSM version since it says you live in London if thats true then your GSM not CDMA)
http://www.multiupload.nl/39NSAMWQU7
If your S-On and you want S-OFF this will probably help since you will be getting the hboot 1.49.0007 (Again this will wipe everything from your phone im not responsible!)
Heres another link just if u wanna know how to get S-OFF
Please hit thanks if i helped!

[Q] Help

hi im new to this kind of phone, i have an lg revo but my friend had a spare phone that he wanted me to root. its the htc evo 3d sprint cdma, now i have it rooted and have recovery, but i tried to install the venom 1.0.0 rom and it loads up but stops at the htc evo screen on boot. im on hboot 1.58.0000 and am on s-on, the phone is unlocked. now ive been seeing things saying to downgrade the hboot to 1.49 but idk what to believe there is alot of different things that people say to do. can someone just tell me what i have to do to fix this and run this rom. like i said im new to this phone and just want to fix it and give it to my friend. make it easy to understand and please dont link me to another thread, i want a straight answer please.
certain roms need a particular hboot to work. for team venom's Viper3D rom you need 1.58 hboot (so you dont need to downgrade). the problem is that you are s-on. there are some simple steps you need to follow.
first of all make sure you have 4EXT recovery with smartflash enabled (this is very important, turn it on in options)
then in recovery wipe all partitions except sdcard and flash your rom. it should boot now.
All this can be avoided if you s-off your phone. if you ever decide to do that, use this guide
