Subject says it all. Used to do this on gb but can't seem to on ics.
Nope, for some unimaginable reason they are controlled together.
Audio control in the market is able to unlink them. It has widgets and profiles. Enhanced Ringer Control for ICS will also unlink them but no widgets or profiles. With either of these you have to go to the apps settings to unlink the ringer and notifications.

I bought Audio Control so that I could separate Notifications and Ringer. When I try to create a Profile that turns Notifications off, it automatically turns the ringer volume OFF as well and won't let me change it. I emailed the Developer to see if there is a fix for this.

Did you first go into settings and turn custom ringer on? That's where it separates them.

I did. The Dev just emailed me to let me know I needed to turn off "Link custom ringer and ringer mode." That fixed it. Great app!

I would imagine the Dev will be getting a lot of business from ICS users. Great app. I love how you can customize the widget colors too.

Alright guys. This is bugging the hell out of me. I usually keep my phone on vibrate during the day, and my phone has stopped vibrating for notifications. Haptic feedback works fine, so it is not a hardware issue. When I have the ringer on, I get notifications, but when I have it on vibrate (Notification volume is set to same as ringer) I get nothing. Anyone have a fix?
Is it set to Vibrate under Sound Settings?

Oops. Must have forgot to turn that on when I switched back from Handcent. Thanks
I'm really hoping there is a fix/solution for this because this makes absolutely no sense.
While on a phone call, the "notification" for text is so incredibly loud (through my headphones) that it hurts my ears. Now please don't tell me to just set the notification volume low because then I wouldn't be able to hear the notifications when I'm NOT on a phone call.
It seems incredibly ridiculous that one cannot adjust notification volume when on a phone call. On my blackberry while on a call, it would produce a soft chime if I receive a message but it's soft and just loud enough so I am aware of the incoming text. With this phone, it screams in my ear! And to make things worse, if I put the phone on speaker or handset, the notification screams through the speakers and the person on the call says what the hell was that???
Is the only option to adjust the notification volume down EVERY TIME I MAKE OR RECEIVE A PHONE CALL... or go deaf (or annoy the people I'm on a call with)?
Please tell me there is a real solution because I can't find one.

I don't want to turn off notifications altogether. I just don't want them going off at the standard set volume while on a call... because it's blaring loud.

I downloaded GOSMS PRO and inside this app there is a setting to set to vibrate while on call... This app is much better than the stock messaging..IMO.

ahh, so go sms replaces the stock messaging system? i don't want that. but i do want the same thing that pj is looking for.
looks like there is nothing that can be done for it pj :-\
the only thing i can find to help you is, goto Settings / Sound / Notification Ringtone. now when you are on that menu, turn your volume rocker down. you will see that the "Notification volume" can go down (or up).
that is all i can find, should help some
Using tasker you can change the volume level during a call and set it higher after...

How can we link ring tone and notification volumes like in gingerbread? I lower the volume but just the ring tone lowers, I'm looking for both volumes to lower at the same time.
Am I missing something or maybe an app can help

i would also like to know if this was possible; audiomanager was able to do this with my epic 4g touch but the option is grayed out on the SIII
Try quick settings from market.

I've tried both versions of this app (there are two different developers that make an app called Quick Settings and they look to do about the same thing) and it looks like it will lock them together but it doesn't...
Im using the Verizon phone. You?
I'm on Sprint and it doesn't work. Tried both apps.

This works as an app to replace the volume buttons but I'm looking to still use my volume buttons. I am amazed that this functionality doesn't exist stock!

Anybody know of a way to make the notification volume go up and down simultaneously with the ringtone volume? I have not been able to find a way to do this yet!
Same here, my old phone had this, I miss this option.
To have the ring volume control the notification volume.
Same here as well

For now I have had to use something like this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cb.volumePlus
There is a setting in the app that let's you link the ring and notification volume.
It works... sometimes.
Maybe I don't understand the app fully, but it seems unreliable. The widget to get into volume settings is nice though.
Just seems so trivial. Never had a phone that couldn't do that! I said in one of my posts before... I see an LG overlay update soon. There are a few obvious kinks that need to be fixed up.
It's not possible on the LGOG. Which is just plain stupid...

I use an app called Smart Profiles which I have preset volume profiles. Its super easy and I don't have to mess with the volume rocker much any more.

Yes, you have the option to set the notification volume to be the same as the ringtone volume in the settings for each of the profiles you set up.

Quick question since you a part of team Nocturnal, is this something that could be achieved trough a custom ROM?
... Say Nocturnal Limited Edition?
Or would the framework source or some such thing be required to edit this?
I've been messing around today and created an application which should do the trick.

Haven't been able to test this with an actual call/notification yet, but looking at the sliders in the system, they move together and seems to be working.
Thank you very much for this.

+1, this belongs in the app section.
Works well.
I find myself hitting a brick wall in the way Samsung chose to deal with volume control. It seems if you set the ringer off it forces notifications to be off as well. I can't overcome this behavior with Tasker
Does anybody here know how to get around this as Cyanogen may be some time in coming.
Even when u hit the volume key and tape the settings icon and adjust the ringer and notification volume, still does that?

That does work but the moment you set the ringer to off it just disables the notification volume as well and ghosts it so you can't change it. Under other roms you can have a seperate notification volume while the ringer is turned off.
Is there a way to over ride this with root?
I see what u mean. I don't think my s3 did this. This phone does a lot of things differently. I can't get lock screen Short cuts with any security enabled lock screen for example. Seems like "holes" in touch wiz
