New Firmware Slow? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello Guy's,
around a month ago i got a new Galaxy S3 at work (A1 (Vodafon) Branded).
I was so satisfied with the device that a bought a new unbranded phone for personal Use at amazon.de
My Private Phone has the latest software builde on it i9300xxblg8.
But by far it doesnt run as smooth as the work Phone. Scrolling on the homescreen and in the Menu is a little laggy.
Is this a Software fault or could anything on the Phone be defective?
Any Ideas on this ?
regards
Stefan

LG8 is not slow /laggy , Try a factory reset ,
Try reflashing the firmware ..
Wait for JellyBean update within the next two months .
jje

ive noticed a tiny bit of lag flicking through the app drawer but overall its a pretty good firmware.
Like above.. try a factory reset and check what background tasks are running.
Jelly Bean will be here soon and it should improve performance dramatically if the Galaxy Nexus is anything to go by Hopefully Samsung dont bog it down too much.

[Q] Roms lagging/keyboard/sms/S2 is slow!!

Im having a hard time figuring out how to get my keyboard running properly... tried many roms with all wipes/reset...different keyboards...turning off haptic/sound/auto complete...flashing kernels...At times everything is perfect (mostly at home) maybe something to do with wifi or being plugged in? but when I am out and about the S2 seems to slow to a crawl on any rom or setup I try...Homescreens lag but most noticeably is the keyboard.
I'm coming from HTC phones.. most recently the EVO3d and I gotta say Ive never experienced any keyboard lags ever...EVERYTHING was smooth as silk even with the heavy sense UI and bloated with apps...the HTCEVO3d ran flawlessly %99 of the time so I would assume the S2 can do the same?
I switched to the s2 mainly because of the size and samsungs gorgeous displays but at the moment I am regretting it...this s2 is suppose to be one of the best phones in the world...I am severely disapointed so far though I am convinced this thing will fly once set up properly...
Im just ripping my last hairs out at the moment...I feel like Ive tried everything...right now I am in love with my MIUI rom setup and really want to stay but it is useless to me if I cant whip off any emails or texts without the keyboard stuttering...ANyone have ANY more ideas?
There are always 3rd party keyboards that you can get from market. Swiftkey is the most popular. Personally i have no problem with the keyboard but if you really having problems try swiftkey
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
yaa.. swiftkey is good! also you could try 'slide it' it also fast with a few themes..
also if you are experiencing poor battery life.. it could be because of miui since the battery problem has occured with me!
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Thanks guys will try but like I mentioned I have been trying many keyboards and I will test swiftkey although I think I already have...
I guess my main issue here is that I possess one of/if not the best smartphones on the planet as far as I know? If I have no other choice but to "band-aid" the issue then I will return to an HTC device... I do believe there is an underlying sofware issue within the OS that I would like to address if possible...IF my old HTC Desire and desire z had no keyboard lag, this baby should have zero problems handling a keyboard...am I right? What gives?
Ill keep reading and trying new things I guess ... my last resort is to revert to samsung stock rom..there is no way it comes off the shelf this way. Like I mentioned before It acts up on every custom rom/kernel/keyboard Ive tried so far..mostly in sms when I leave my wifi zone or unplug...Otherwise at times its flawless and smooth.
I am using MIUI ICS Scotland rom at the moment with siyah kernel if that helps at all!
Tested Cyanogen/illusion/sensation/VillainROm and a few others with same results.
By the way MIUI scotland with ICS 4.0.1 has the best Battery Life Ive experienced so far.. most features and customization with fewest bugs in my experience anyway...I have my heart set on this rom on the S2 if only I could figure this keyboard mess out...
A thought Ive been looking into:
Is there anyway of setting my cpu to overclock only when the keyboard runs? I have a feeling the CPU is not responding properly if that makes any sense at all...it just seems like its not giving the keyboard any respect!
Suggestion is .
Clean Slate for those that balls up the firmware .Or need to return to service or decide if its hardware/firmware problem .
Backup data first if phone is working .
Boot CWM recovery
Mounts and Storage
Format cache data system sd card .
Remove battery
Boot to download mode
Open Odin
Install correct stock firmware .

My phone is less reliable than my S2

Browser crashes are similarly irritating
Launcher redraws are a pain... which I believe cause...
Regular music app cut outs (whilst browsing etc...)
the gallery widget 'forgets' the pictures I've chosen
Home screen wallpaper gets lost and reverts to default
I really don't want to believe it but this phone may not be as good as my s2...
This evening I'm also seeing poor sms behaviour i.e. suggesting sent on one screen but not on the other. All a bit shoddy and below s2 standard...
It's just teething problems and will be fixed in firmware updates.
I'm sorry you feel that way, hope you kept your s2 so you can safely go back to that

Don't worry about it, it's absolutely normal. Every smartphone has similar software problems when they are first released, what you have to be glad for is that software problems can be fixed, at least you don't have any hardware problems which cant be fixed with an update. I remember I got my s2 when it first came out and to be honest it had very similar problems to what you have just mentioned and Samsung did fix them, or at least made the problems happen a lot less frequently. I hope this helps you
Hope so... but I wasn't that late to get an s2 and I don't remember things like this... but maybe the s2 heightened my expectations...
In day to day use, I'd be happier with my old phone bit my missus has now pinched it.
Well the S3 has more stuff running in the background, the higher resolution, quad core and all the other stuff they got running on ICS with all the new drivers they have to write, where S2 was running the same OS as S1 and basically similar kind of phone.

How do I turn that stuff off to give me a reliable phone then?
Well you can't. They just wrote the Firmware for a new device and have to balance out the resource allocation and making it all gel together and you get bugs, and it's annoying but we all just have to live with it and wait for Samsung to get off their arses and fix it.

[Q] Jelly Bean Very Laggy and Slow

Background: Updated my ICS unlocked i9300 to JB finally last night.
Can anyone advise why when i was on ICS, i was experiencing no lag at all and the entire experience was really nice, but now i have upgrade to JB the experience is very poor due to allot of lag and general system slowness? For example, if i kill the messaging app from long pressing the home key (with a kill all open tasks), when i re-open the messaging i will be greeted with only phone numbers on the display initially but then after a sec or 2 the names and pics are populated. Also another exapmle would be the keyboard (stock one), when clicking in the URL box of any browser or in the messaging app (again stock as before), the keyboard takes quite some time to appear!?!
It seems very odd to me as JB is supposed to be very good with it's "butter" but is not performing for me at all in the way it should?!?
Any help greatly appreciated as i now no-longer like my phone very much :crying:

Problem is not jellybean... its you.
There's no way jellybean is very slow compare to your ics..
If ics is faster for you then go back to the ics.
I got the exict same problem ! the main theme ringtone in the start booting screen plays but no video just black screen with the sound.. Afrer it boots its very very laggy and after like 15min the phone freez with black screen.
i got the update today im from kuwait .
Seems as if wiping cache and dalvik has been forgotten. ..

'Crest+', very unhelpful answer and the type of answer you'd expect from dumb asses that use nokia. If you bothered searching the net you'd realise that this issue has affected allot of people and i thought i'd ask the experts at xda - but i guess trollers have made it here as well.
Wiping was not done in my case due to the fact that it was not advised to do so via any point of the update and should have been setup to be more like the upgrade from froyo to GB and actually worked properly without having to do so on other devices. Why would anyone want to wipe the cache and dalvik if not prompted to do so via the official process?!?
Did u try factory reat?

No as it was not required but it would appear this is the only possible resolve... Joy, time to backup and restore tonight which knowing kies will take about 4.5 hours...

and here i thought you were the one trolling...
but since there are people experiencing also..
I apologize for my response earlier..
.....
Here's what you need to do... try flashing a full firmware from sammobile...probably the latest firmware to make sure its updated...
then flash it using odin... I never experienced this so called lag that's why I answered the question based on my experience.

Not a problem, i will try the factory reset first as i should have the full latest seeing as it was stock updated through kies last night. Worst case scenario is i go back to custom romming it.

Due to me not having much time at the point of needing to format and restore i decided to carry on for a few days until getting the opportunity, but oddly the issue seems to have gone now
The only thing i can link it to is the fact that i ran through all the settings and was greeted with the annoying 'help' popups, and once i cycled through al the menus getting rid of the last popup...no more lag The phone is running very smooth (as it should), but really can't see how the menu aids were slowing it down (if they were), but they are the only thing i can link the issue to :silly:

I have tried many jb roms and i have to say that although jb is extremely smooth,I always find it extremely slow compared to good old GB.
I have the feeling that they have sacfificed speed for smoothness!
Same thing on mine Galaxy S3
I've just experienced same thing as you..
Sluggish, laggy.. and everything after i did official update to Jelly Bean..
Resolve:
Turn phone off
VOL UP+HOME+POWER..
Wipe cache...
That's it
At least it's working for me
Cheers

SGH-I757M A LOT of lag

I just purchased a Bell I757M and had it unlocked, I came from a Rogers Galaxy S2 LTE. I noticed the I757M was slow so I upgraded it to 4.1.2 and noticed it, actually, got more laggy. Can somebody explain why it's so laggy?
I can't believe how slow this phone is.
When the phone boots up it's already at 431M/737M used of memory.
Jellybean does use a lot more RAM than ICS, but I wouldn't worry about it because the OS knows how to manage RAM very well.
Have u done a factory reset after updating? That should speed up things.
If not, u can try rooting and removing some bloatware.

No I haven't done a factory reset after the upgrade. I will try that tonight.
But even when it was on 4.0.4. It was slow. I'm just surprised how slow it is compared to my Rogers galaxy s2 lte

I've done a factory reset twice and it improved the performance a bit. But it's still slower than my Rogers Galaxy S2 LTE. And I find high memory usage on this phone. Did I just get a lemon?
Android does a good job of managing memory & doesn't like free memory sitting around doing nothing, if it notices same, it will tend to reserve it automatically in case it's needed. What you're seeing is perfectly normal; don't judge the performance of one device against a completely different device with different specs/different phone setup/etc. That's on the same page as benchmarking I.E utterly pointless.
I find if you don't have at least 2G of RAM android is laggy.

Maybe is just your device's model, we, I9100 users, never complain lagginess cuz we don't experience it.

Honestly Samsung did not a perfect job making the ICS update and the JB one was just crap. You should have tried putting a ROM on it instead of using TouchWiz. I tried Slim Bean (4.1.2) after going back and forth between ICS and JB and it is FAST.

[Q] {Q} ARHD 4.3 problems (slow screen unlock, cannot hang up the phone etc)

Hey guys,
so i searched for 4.3 problems like this and i found something but vaguely so deicided to post a question.
So i have installed this new rom 4.3 on international galaxy s3 i9300,so i installed ARHD v40 and tried bioth kernels that i get in aroma.
howerevr i am having pain in the ass like problems with lokcing/unlocking the phone, general slowness and cannot hang up the phone sometimes...
also sometiemes it takes alot of time to unlock so if i need my phone quickly i gert near crash into a wall kidnd of a stage.
so i need help, do i revert to older rom or how do i fix this?
thanks in advance
Use developer mode in settings ,you can find "show cpu usage" and tick the checkbox. After that you can see processes on the top-right of the screen. Find out which one is always on the top, or if the blue color too much it's an iowait problem.
Makes more sense to ask in the roms thread .
Yea but the rom replies are happening every day and alot of them so the question gets pushed to older pages and doesnt get respond so i asked here.
Anyway i got the thing cleared i installed boeffla v2 kernel and set to zzmove and now it is much faster but still slow sluggish 4.3 on galaxy s3 so now i am searching to go back to older stock roms, any suggestions where i can get those older roms? Sammobile has only new i think?
Thanks for reply in advance

That's because your ROM is still on the earliest version of 4.3 which was the worst update for our phone yet.. Change over to other ROM out rather adj any other fellow user of your ROM how are they getting smooth performance..
If you are thinking of changing ROM
Do consider neat ROM.. Or hypersonic rom...
