JTAG unbrick - HTC Rezound

Does anyone have any experience with jtag and unbricking? I ask because after bricking two phones, a third probably won't go over so well with the warranty dept. I'm willing to pick up a jtag jig so that I can keep developing but I'd like to pick the brain of someone with experience in this area before I do so. Possibly someone with the hardware already whose willing to soft brick and attempt a recovery. I know its a lot to ask but if we have
a definite way to unbrick we can really go at it. Plus I'd be willing to use the jig I pick up to attempt unbricking for others if they soft brick while devving.

did you try to get you rezound into "download" mode? i know there was another member that could unbrick it if you could get into that mode. when i bricked i couldnt get it to work. but maybe your brick was a different type then mine

qhusb_dload? I tried by doing the wire trick (like for s-off). I figured if I could get that I'd be able to recover but it wasn't working for me. Is there another way?
Right now I get no indication that the phone has any signs of life, no power on at all and not even a charge led. I have another one on its way but I really don't want to try for three strikes. I'm thinking I'm going to stay s-on for devving. It should be harder to brick then.

This is the exact reason I never s-off'd. I don't need the smallest mistake to cost me a phone. With all of the aroma installers, it doesn't really seem necessary.

yep thats the one. if you could get it into download mode then you can flash a stock recovery and stock hboot back on. but like you said, there was no life at all. it sounds like you did what i did. :/
i dont think you need to worry about how many you are RMA'ing. im on my 3rd now. 2 HW failure and this one has a bad screen.

Wasn't the whole purpose of the "wire trick" that we used for S-OFF for forcing the phone into download mode?

It would still be nice to have a solid way of unbricking. If I keep sending them back with the same exact problem I feel they would get suspicious eventually. Plus the new one I just got is pretty flawless so far, no dead pixels or anything so I'd like to keep it.
I have a new CM build sitting here right now that I'm terrified to try. Haha. So if you're uh sending the one with the bad screen back and want to try a couple things out first...

Yea that would be sick if we could get this to work. Probably, to find a JTAG/Uart port, we would have to take the board out of the device. I don't really wanna do it to mine since I wouldn't know how to put it back together

do you think it has something to do with the kernel that is causing the bricks?

One thing I'm worried about is if devs stay s-on to prevent bricking then how would they know if their stuff would brick other people's phones or not?

I think this is clear that HTC will not let us have S-OFF unless its from a developer

Why is my security still on (S-On) after I have unlocked my bootloader?
Your device is shipped with Security on (S-ON) to protect your system software configuration (such as the bootloader, radio, boot, recovery, system and others). After you have unlocked the bootloader, however, you will have lifted the restrictions on boot, recovery and system. This means you can customize boot, recovery and system images on your phone as you desire. You can easily see that you have successfully unlocked the bootloader by looking at the top of the screen when entering the bootloader screen. Security is left on to protect things like the radio, and SIM lock.
If you should require support, please feel free to contact us via the support section of our website, http://www.htc.com
http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/faq

I wonder if HTC is waiting for ICS and then let something "leak" to obtain s-off.

That'a actually another reason why I don't want to rush to obtain s-off because even if we get it we may lose it with the OTA. Would be our luck. We know that HTC read these so what's to stop them from being like "Huh. This Binary100100 bastard figured out how to get around s-on. Let's patch that with ICS! That'll show them!"
you have a point.. but what about if your wrong? i hope your right though

No, and most likely never will because it invalidates the very reason S-on is enabled. We've (the community) always developed a way to bypass the signature as far back as I can remember, but they've figured out a way to make it more difficult to accomplish with the Amaze.
I think if we make enough noise, perhaps they'll create a tool that allows overwriting the signature. My optimism always gets the best of me!

I believe its the lack of developers for the amaze, the rezound is newer than our phone and I believe they have achieved S-off, It's hard to say because that phone is a CDMA phone, but never the less if they have figured out a way to make it more difficult it should be for all the new HTC phones, which doesn't seem to be the case.

That's what you should have done in the first place. You might be better off trying to get a warranty replacement. If the phone is bricked, they won't be able to tell if you tried to do something to it anyway. Just an idea. Hope you learned your lesson. Should have been a given.

About a half hour of reading in the first place would have saved you the 600+ dollar paperweight you just created. In a half hour, you could effectively figure out that n7000 ROMs are a big no-no for the i717, learned how to root your i717, learn how to flash CWM on your i717, and flash an i717 ROM to your i717.
Not to condone screwing over AT&T, but I would suggest you do the following, if you by chance have the monthly insurance on your phone: report it lost or stolen, pay the $200 deductible to order a new one, then take your old one which is now completely useless, and smash it with a hammer, run it over with your car, burn it, spray paint it, burn it again, smash it some more, wrap a strip of firecrackers around it and light it off, use it for target practice for the nearest firearm or paintball gun, then put it in a display case to keep in a prominent location in your home or office as a reminder of what a lack of reading can do to your device. Then, while you are waiting patiently for your new i717 to arrive in the mail, take the time to READ everything you can about your specific phone so you know every in and out of it before it is in your hands.
All joking aside, the best you can probably do is report it lost or stolen, order a new one, and then see if somebody needs it to try out JTAG repairs for the Note. I'm not sure if JTAG has been accomplished on the i717 yet, but that's probably the most use your phone will ever provide again.

If your phone just sits there and does absolutely nothing, nothing at all, like a corpse, then that and ONLY that is a brick.

Devs- I will test/explore/brick my phone to help you

May not be in the proper section but I would hope this gives more exposure to DEVS in this section. Please move to proper section if you feel the need
All Rezound Devs-
I have a spare rezound for 5 days that in the end must be bricked prior to going back to warranty center.
I am offering to beta/experiment for you this weekend.
I can have a linux setup if need be.
Id rather let the community use me to test things rather than a dev kill their device and slow down dev progress.
If you dont brick this phone I will LOL
Please feel free to PM me and we can set up a time, via gtalk/irc etc

Dude I'm in the sticks, no buildings remotely close to that size. Lol but I can say I've seen droid 2 used as a wheel chock
If you really need to brick and a dev does not come to you. Pull the battery and usb during an hboot flash or s-on while on an eng/patched hboot.
theres a pretty simple way to brick your phone.
flash a bad radio.
pull batt during radio install.
anything radio lol.

This! I dont mind what my hboot says, but it would be nice to have it say something other than Juopunutbear or whatever. Going to have to start explaining that to friends who play on my phone LOL

There's liquipel coating to make phones submersible, its like 70.00 to send out and have done.
On a side note on warranty replacement number 2 the search key doesn't light up much, but I can tell by looking last person who had this was in Cambridge Massachusetts, further inspection into epst shows they made 91hrs of calls on it, phone was refurbished on 4/17/2012 too lol

[Q] [Help] Can't boot phone at all after installing kernel

After rooting my phone and installing the LiquidSmooth rom, I was looking for a kernel to try and oc my cpu. Found this one, did a nandroid backup, and flashed it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1362424&page=2
Problem is, now my phone won't boot at all. By this I mean, it won't normal boot or boot into recovery, it doesnt even have any splash screens. No matter what buttons I hold down the screen stays black, nothing pops up, no sounds are made, nothing vibrates, absolutely nothing happens.
The battery isn't dead, I had it charging when I was doing all of this and it was at least 90%.
Please help, I don't have any idea what, if anything, can be done D:
that sucks bud

Oh man, that sounds like what happened to mine, It died.. dead. nothing. sent it back to where I bought and they replaced it. it was in the 15 day period. jag wanted 250 to fix it, I just bought a second note for parts. if it did die, keep an eye out for a broken screan can get cheap.
Ur prob is u flashed the wrong kernal for the wrong type of phone that is a no no. The n7000 is not the same as the i717. That is y u stay in the same section of the phone u have. I hope u still have a warranty. Next time stay in the i717 section.

So basically, my only option is to replace it?
Or send it to JTAG repair service, spend $50, wait a week.
My Note just kicked the bucket too. I installed Flap-Jack's Kernel on top of Liquid Jellybean 2.8 and when it tried to reboot it seems to have died & laid down on me. It's going to be fun using an old Motorola Flip Phone again. Damn, I'm pissed!

Which version of flapjaxx's kernel did you flash? He has kernels for ICS and jellybean. Must have flashed a ICS version.

I knew it was JB. I used h0tcakez-JB-Kernal-v2.3.5-Alt. I used it on 3 or 4 different roms here lately with no issues..

I bought it brand new from a guy on eBay and then registered it on the Samsung site. It shows to be still in warranty on Samsung's site till the end of June. Will it still be this easy to get it replaced as u say AT&T is?
Post withdrawn.
I'm going to report it to Samsung tomorrow and at least try to send it in.I wish they'd accidentally send me a Note 2 for kicks & grins.
Yeah, that's fair. You screwed up, then tried to defraud the warranty process. You definately deserve an upgrade.
No wonder the bootloaders are being locked and prices are more ridiculous. What ever happened to "I screwed up -- no I live with my mistake?"

Now I'm all for people expressing their opinions whether its in support or against whatever topic that's being discussed. However, insulting comments like this one I've quoted is unnecessary and has absolutely no value. There is a difference between stating that you don't agree with something or explaining why you don't agree, verses personally attacking or insulting someone because you don't like what was said. "Grown men", as I'm sure we all are, should know the difference and know what's appropriate and what's not.

I've told certain individuals in several threads not to condone fraud on this forum the last 2 days . Enough is enough.

Sometimes shame can cause positive character growth.
Besides, people who commit fraud and encourage others to do it hurt a lot more than feelings.

most phones have a specific resistance setting, such that when its electrical output is met with a usb's specific-resistance-resistor, will completely re-do all of the phones settings. This should do the trick. and for 5 bucks, id say its worth it. This is what the first poster was getting at, but i dont think you understood based on your reply. and if you did my apologies.

Samsung phones resistance is 300k Ohms. Here is a link to instructions on how to make one, it's very easy and anyone with beginner soldering skills can make it.

Thanks bud, I made one already it is pretty easy but for some reason I messed up the first one even though I did the same thing with the second. For some the piece of mind of getting one for a few bucks as opposed to getting a soldering iron and some spare resistors is easier. Buuuuuuut I'll link this elsewhere too!
Yea imma try to make one today
Thanks yall
