[Q] Updating from an (rooted) branded to an unbranded ICS? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I will be using Odin to update, because my current version (2.3.3) is rooted. I would like to upgrade to 4.0.3, but I don't know whether to use a branded firmware or not because I don't live in France anymore, and I don't need a branded phone.
Also, is updating to 4.0.3 worth it, or does it drain the battery life like when you update your iOS to a newer version.

yes, updating is worth it beccause you get better batery life depending on what apps are running in the back ground.
you do not need to use a branded app for 4.0.3 their are unbranded stock or customized roms. Yolu will need to experiment till you find one that you like.

Hi there! So, I have found a custom ROM like (Mystic's Glory), but I was wondering whether I can update/flash it directly using Odin, or if I need to update it to the official ICS, then flash the custom rom? Excuse my newbiness.

You can flash your chosen rom directly via odin if it's in a tar. file format. Or flash it via CWM if it's in a zip file format. Be sure to carry out full wipes and format system to ensure a clean installation. Ideally follow installation guide for your chosen rom. Oh and make a back up before you start.

[Q] Help me select ROMS

hello all,
Before I being, i searched a bit in this forum and in web. But the questions i have still are not answered.
I on KE2 stock ROM. i have an unbranded SGSII. I have rooted using steps mentioned here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125414
I want to install any of the custom Roms or the newer ROMS mainly because the battery usage sucks. with some hour music and calls battery get drained easily.
I dont mind updating to latest stock ROM also as long as it solves the problem.
Kies dose not offer me an upgrade and its also grayed out for some reason
Here is my SGSII specs
Code:
Product Code: GT-I9100LKADBT (From RegEdit)
PDA: I9100XWKE2
Phone: I9100XXKDJ
CSC: I9100OXXKE2
Baseband: I9100XXKDJ
If I have some problem, I want to revert back to Stock rom before giving it to Samsung. I have also ordered a USB Jig. It should be on the way now. So i can reset the counter as well.
Before flashing, I want to know what all i should do. Is it just fine If i flash the firmware file? Also in Samfirmware i see something called pit files.
can anyone help me in flashing the correct rom?
thank you
All Custom ROM's give detailed installation instructions in the first couple of posts.
For what it's worth, having tried a number of different ROM's, VillainRom 1.4 has the best battery for me. 2 days with moderate use.
+ Villian rom but read and understand the instructions before you start .
jje
Cognition S2 is a good rom, full instructions for flashing.
If you look in the android development section, theres also a thread with all stock firmwares, kernals and tutorials for flashing
thank you all.
I was wondering about how to revert back in case of some problem. Also do I need to take care something about the baseband etc?
I am kind of new so thats what makes me tensed! I dont want to screw up the mobile.
Don't worry, once you have USB jib, you can reset Odin flash counter and this is a safe way to rescue you in case of brick.
In terms of baseband, ke4 or kf2 are the best ones. Kf2 kernel + kf2 base band is a good combination. You can try many ones and choose by yourself.
On xda, there are all stock firmware to rollback if needed.
Take a look at the stock rom and branded roms post in Dev section find your phone and download a copy of the rom.
That can be flashed back via Odin to original state wiping any root and stock roms .

How about ROM Manager ? i read that It can install ROMS over air
http://www.androlib.com/android.application.com-koushikdutta-rommanager-nptD.aspx
Don't use that as far as know. My kernel wasn't supported and it took me days before my recovery mode was working as I wanted. Maybe it works with other kernels, but with my bad experience thus far I don't install that again.

Installing rom manager is not an issue... Very few custom rom are compatible with this. Afaik Cognition rom is one of them.

You think I can install ROMS with this? no more Odin?
No this is a little bit more complicated. You need a rom compatible with this like cognition seemed to add. The main idea is to have a rom compatible with rom manager and this will allow you to change to another rom compatible with this. Unfortunately, there are not so many custom rom... Perhaps sicopat's one?
I justed wanted to say that rom manager is not dangerous to install and even to launch.
OK Thank you,
But I am still confused If i need to update the modem etc. Let me do some more search
You can upgrade modem version by Odin flash mode separately to the rest.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1131950
Just download a modem.bin file or gets it from a complete firmware by unzip.
Put modem.bin into phone area of Odin and start accordingly of normal flash processing.
Thanks bgn9000
MY whole worry is whether to update modem or not. I dont want to mess with my phone as i think there is no downgrade.
Looks like I have to invest more time in understanding this flashing

[Q] Unbranded 2.3 UK f/w?

Sorry for being a bit dumb, I used to be on XDA all the time when I had my x10 but that's some time ago now!
I want to flash an original unbranded uk 2.3 ROM on to my phone. No tweaks, rooting etc
Can someone please help me find one or link me to the relevant thread?
And once I've got the ROM what do I need to do? With the x10 it was a simple case of place the zip on the sd, boot into xrecovery and flash. Is it the same with the GS2?
Curious as to why you'd want to put a 2.3 GB rom on your phone ? Anyhoo, have a look at this thread. If you find links don't work, note the details of the firmware you want & search Samfirmware.com for it.
Want to install unbranded GB so I can get the official ICS update via Kies. That would work - right?
Yep. If you install 'correct' stock rom for your region it should give you the correct CSC for your country & you should be able to get Kies updates. If it doesn't work, you can always grab ICS stock roms from here/elsewhere & flash them manually.

Just a tad confused as there's so many ROMs to choose from!
I've installed Clockwork Mod, is it now just a case of find the correct ROM, stick it on the SD card and boot the phone in recovery?
Doubt you'll find many stock roms that are CWM flashable.
The majority (all ?) are Odin flashable, because people tend to go back to stock to either get a 'clean slate' they can then install custom roms/kernels over if they've had problems, or if they're sending the phone in for warranty service/replacement.
Right, so gotta work out how to use Odin....cheers!
So that means that custom ROMs can be flashed using CWM?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Many (most) custom roms are CWM flashable. Some also have Odin flashable versions.
That's what makes trying custom roms so easy, you backup your existing rom in CWM, flash the rom you want to try, if you don't like it you restore your backup & go back to your previous setup. All in a matter of minutes.

As to the last post .
I have custom GB rom and want to try but not buy ICS custom rom .
Nandroid backup of full existing GB rom and all apps and settings via CWM recovery .
Flash ICS custom rom via CWM recovery test it make a nandroid backup also .
Boot CWM recovery and go back to the exact GB settup and i can even restore the ICS rom again .

Re-flash stock firmware

hello everyone.
I'm using andyx firmware v15 and taking my attention that battery dies too fast and phone feels lagging at times.
So i want to go back to the stock firmware and use a rooted stock firmware. but i have a couple of questions:
1) i dont really know which pda or country's firmware i have to use.bought my phone from poland and living in turkey now. can i find out which version the phone originally came with from the box or anywhere else?
if using any firmware wont matter, is there any particular one i should use? maybe getting the newest updates before the ones?
2) is the version 4.0.4 safe to use? my friend suggested me to use that one but i'm a little pissed off after reading the brick stories about it.
3) also someone else told me to flash stock firmware then go for the siyah kernel. whats the benefit for that?

1) there are no particular firmwares. Try out different firmwares on whatever suits you best. I suggest you go up for Gingerbread because of its stability and battery life. But if you want to be updated on the trending things, go for ICS.
2) i suggest you go for custom roms with 4.0.4 as a basis.
3) siyah kernel MAY be a suitable kernel for you, but then again, it could be different. Try out different kernels that best suits you
-Try the search button for further info so you could get a variety of comments from users. Happy flashing

Use CheckFus to find the latest firmware for your phone and flash it with ODIN.
To root your phone just do some reading. There are quite a few methods described here, some are easy, some are more complicated. In the end choose one that corresponds to your needs and skills.
Ive just done what you were asking for similar reasons. I went on to samfirmware site and picked latest and safest ROM. Then on to chainfires thread for the insecure kernel to root my S2. (thanks to chainfire) No a difficult task just read before flasing and make necessary back ups. All tbe best.

I'm rooted... How do I flash the latest OFFICIAL Samsung Jelly Bean ROM?

Hi,
I have my GS3 rooted, and its currently running a Custom ROM (FoxHound 0.7). What I want to do is move away from this and head back to the official Samsung stock ROM for extra stability.
I wasn't sure on:
a) Where to get the latest Jelly Bean releases for the UK i9300
b) How to go about flashing an official Stock ROM... Is it the same as flashing a Custom ROM, like through CWM??
c) Whether I will still be able to update OTA when new official update releases come out from Samsung?
Sorry for the questions but I've searched through a few threads and I can't seem to gather a definitive answer.
TIA

Can i know why did u root your GS3 in the first place if you planning to run stock rom.
Maybe try some custom roms which might gives you more benefit than stock rom.
Anyhow, if you still want to install stock rom, try finding it here: http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/
Thanks. I'm downloading that now.
I rooted to try out different custom ROMS and also so that I could do things like hook up my PS3 control pad via Bluetooth but I've found the Custom ROMS I've tried (Foxhound, CM10, Omega, Paranoid Android, Resurrection Remix) all to be a bit flakey in different areas
This is the reason I want to go back to a Samsung Stock ROM, at least then I'll be on a completely stable platform and can still customise with a different launcher.
So do I flash this Samsung firmware in the normal way I would flash a Custom ROM?? Through ClockWorkMod recovery?? And will the official OTA updates still be available?

I found the easiest method to flash a stock ROM is MobildOdin till now as you directly can inject root (super user) and do not have to root later on again. Otherwise download your rom, and flash via Odin, after that flash again CF Root to get root.

After that, you can receive ota updates as usual...
OK thanks guys. I'm not too fussed about Root again right away, so I presume I'm heading into ODIN to flash the official Samsung Firmware then?
I've downloaded the latest JB Leak for the International variant (i9300), however I've just been reading that you can flash/install the OFFICIAL POLAND JB FIRMWARE to the phone and just change the language settings? Don't suppose you know how true this is do you?

yes, as said beforehand, CSC includes region specific settings whereas you can run the rom also without CSC (did this with CSC unknown for quite some time, to not get CSC unknown just flash the rom twice, to change the CSC you can use an app from the market designed to change CSCs easily).
Kernel/Radio is not included in the CSC, here you can flash, if you wish, any kernel suitable to your region of that gives you best reception.
Thanks all, looks like I'm up and running again with Stock.

SGS2 I9100 XXLPH back to Stock

Hey friends.. So here's the quick scenerio.. My wife's phone currently has the AOKP JB 4.1.1 Rom (Baseband I9100XXLPH)
It's giving her alot of grief in terms of All google apps and other installed apps (Instagram, photobucket, Root Explorer, etc) are constant FC on her.
I've backed up all her photos and info and she now just wants me to go back to the stock I9100 Rom.
Located in Canada and on the FIDO network if that matters. She doesn't want a TouchWiz rom, if possible, just Standard Android.
Is this possible? and if so can I get the location of any files required? Rom, Gapps, etc.
The install procedure.. (I'm familiar with the Clockwork Mod rom install (it's how I got JB on there) but have never gone backwards. I have used Odin in the past if that is the way to go. Just want to make sure I do it correctly and if there's anything I'm missing? Kernal? Modem?
Thanks.
