I just got an Amaze 4G, wanted the SGS3 but not paying $300 for a phone other carriers are only charging $200 for and it has no LTE radio to boot.
I've rooted the phone, but did not do s-off, not sure what the advantages of having s-off are. Now that I'm rooted, I can't use the stock hotspot, it always shows an error, but my wifi tether app works fine. I have the TMO 5GB plan with tethering, so I can't figure out why the stock app doesn't work. Any ideas what could have happened? Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Well 12 views and no replies, can't anyone help?
Patience.
Have you rebooted yet? Also, you should clear caches for the WiFi hotspot app. I don't see why rooting would make that app faulty.
I hate to sound stupid, but how do you clear the Wifi hotspot cache?

Either boot into recovery and clear all of the caches from there or go to Settings>Apps> All Apps ... Then find the Mobile HotSpot and find and clear its cache.
If neither of those work boot back into recovery and perform a Fix Permissions under Tools (if you're using 4EXT recovery)
Did you change anything after rooting by the way?

Im not too sure what may have happened. I rooted my tbolt using the newest method (script one click root method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1009969 )
I cant get 3g service, but everything else seems to work great. I only have basic cellular service.
Any ideas? Thanks!
I'm about to start a thread on this, but try this, it works for me: I HAVE to turn my wifi off to get 3g/4g data. If I leave wifi on, I only get cell service, no data.
Data works for me when wifi is on. Is it doing this when you are connected with wifi?
I've read that a factory reset fixes the issue. I had this issue out of the box, read somewhere to factory reset...bingo 3G back
I just wanted to say the threat title was so misleading...I was wondering how you were getting 3D in the first place lol...
but yeah i've heard all kinds of things, from battery pulls to having to unroot etc to fix these issues.
I tried battery pull, I tried factory reset via clockwork and the standard way - i now have 1x but not 3g - so weird. Any other suggestions or links to follow a solution?
Thanks!
So.. I might be the only one experiencing this but i haven't had any data since i flashed asop newest rom... re-flashed, called vm, bought the new $199 phone, called again and they told me to wait 48 hrs..? Has anybody else experienced this dreadful b/s?
Thanks!
Did u have data before you flashed? Was your phone activated? What recovery are you using? If I recall correctly, in the ROM thread there are a few suggestions to getting it working again; such as going into emergency programming mode or something like that, as well as re-flashing the stock ROM, activating, then flashing.
Have you setup the APNs after flashing?
I use a tool called "APN backup and restore".
If the APN is already installed and not working, try switching to airplane mode and back.
If it is not installed, you will need to set it up either through you service provider or manually. (I don't know what your carrier is).

Lol well most everyone on here with the Optimus V will be on Virgin Mobile.
I had a problem like this - tried everything - reloaded old nand ... etc. A person on another board suggested installing a data switch app and turning it back on. I thought this was crazy but I did it (desperate) and it worked.
Sorry did not know that you have Optimus V. Any way most service providers have some way to send you the settings files. Some through a service request page online or an SMS no. To request the settings from.
I have seen a link on customer support of samsung the gives you manual settings for all networks around the world, I just can not find it now.

I did have data before i flashed.. called VM again and they sent me a 3G reset but that did nothing.. I'm using thnderc recovery and asop lastest rom, I will try a few things that where pointed out to me and update on my progress.. thanks for the feedback!
I'm having the same problem with my Optimus V, and looking on the interwebs it seems to be a known problem, that possibly affects all of Virgin mobile smart phones. I just end up going into settings and turning off/on the data connection. This always fixes it, until the next day or so when it happens again. Pretty frustrating. The LG forums even admit it's an issue and posted on this thread: LG forums about data issue but no actual fix as of yet.
And I'm actually still running stock on it, so it's not a custom ROM issue.
I have been having an issue with WiFi where it won't disconnect when leaving a hotspot. The device shows that it is still connected even though I'm miles from the router and won't pick up 3G. I performed a hard reset and on a fresh load everything appeared to be fine. When I walked out of WiFi range 3G picked up immediately. This morning, the issue is back.
Based upon doing a factory reset and it working, I believe it must be an app issue. Does anyone know of any apps that would cause a wifi lock or otherwise prevent the hand-off? I have over 150 apps installed and would prefer not to go one by one if someone can point me to any known issues.

how did you get to that point? did you install the pre-rooted updated ROM? if so did you also apply the radio update? (i really don't know if it needed done separately from the ROM, but i know there was a radio update included with the OTA)

I followed the guide at the following link and it worked perfectly for me. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1770501
Thinking through this further I did restore the wifi ssids from a titanium backup. TB restores data only - could there be an issue with that? I'm just really puzzled here.
I just did more testing. If I turn "Best Wi-Fi Performance" off I can get the device to switch to 3g when I'm out of range. I'd like to retain this setting but it obviously doesn't handoff correctly. Is there a timeout setting somewhere?

I'm looking for a way to use my "retired" HTC Incredible 4G (ADR6410LVW) as a GPS puck. It was my wife's phone for 2 years and the screen is cracked, the battery is in bad shape, the camera lens is smudged, and it's been mistreated by each of my children. So it's in pretty rough shape, but I got it for a good price, and it still seems to work.
Because my tablet (rooted Kindle Fire 1st edition - stock ROM) doesn't have an internal GPS, I need to tether it to the phone to get mock GPS coordinates for several mapping applications. For this purpose, the phone works with TetherGPS if both devices are on the same (external) WiFi.
The problem is that with the provided Mobile Hotspot app, the software won't allow a connection unless there is a data source (i.e. Verizon network). Since the phone is de-activated, no source exists, so the mobile hotspot won't turn on. I will be using this in vehicles far from WiFi and I have no plans to re-activate a phone just to get a GPS. Maybe there is a way to trick the app into thinking there is a data source, I'm not sure.
I've also tried Android WiFi Tether, but I run into permission errors on the phone, and it doesn't seem to be working. I've learned from this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19935112&postcount=40) that I may need root access to use Android WiFi Tether.
I'd prefer not to root the phone if I don't have to, but if that's the only way, I'll do it. I learned from reading this post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2214653) that IF I want to root my phone (and do a lot more which may or may not be necessary), I need to flash update 2.17.605.5. My phone already has firmware version 2.19.605.2, so if I was to go that route, I have no idea whether I should just do a factory reset, backload the old firmware, or what.
Can someone please point me in the right direction?
You are correct that most non-carrier based WiFi Tether apps do require root. I tried experimenting with the app I use (WiFi Tether for Root Users) by changing my radio mode to GSM Only (i.e. mobile data is on, but not really going anywhere), and my laptop connected to the phone just fine.
Regarding rooting your phone, the thread you referenced for rooting is for older firmware. Since you're on 2.19.605.2, you will want this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2664460

Thanks for the link to the updated method. I was able to follow the instructions (with only minor detours) and got my rum. My phone is now showing S-OFF in the bootloader. However, when I reboot, I get a blank screen except the status bar on the top. When I switch to "Disk Drive", my files and such appear to still be intact based on browsing from my PC. But I can't see them on my phone.
How do I get back to a usable screen on my phone?

That's an odd problem... Since you can get to your files via PC, I recommend backing up your files to your PC, then install a fresh RUU (older ones can be found here).
Installing the RUU will nuke all of your files and essentially make your phone "factory fresh", but you will remain s-off. (Once you're s-off, you should stay s-off pretty much no matter what you do, unless you intentionally make your phone s-on, but do not do that unless you really know what you're doing...).
After RUU, you'll need to install a superuser program (superuser or SuperSU) to (re)gain root.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, it looks like those RUU files have been taken down.
I wonder if my problem started with the script from mdmower. I had to run it multiple times before I got it to work; it turns out two lines had to be run immediately after each other and I was waiting for the first to finish before typing in and running the second. I wonder if the second line did something that can be undone by re-running it with different options? I have no idea what ln or -s are. Here is the script I'm talking about.
Code:
adb restore fakebackup.ab
adb shell "while ! ln -s /data/local.prop /data/data/com.android.settings/a/file99
Got it working
I was able to get it working by doing a factory reset in twrp. I lost all my data, but I had backed up to my PC first, so I can re-install.
Thanks again for the help!

So my apps are re-installed on my phone, and Wifi Tether has root access, but I still can't connect my phone to my other devices. Neither my Kindle Fire nor my PC can see my phone's Wifi, whether the house Wifi is on or off. I tried installing the Wifi Tether on my rooted Fire and that also didn't allow me to connect the two devices.
So am I SOL - no tether without an internet stream? Is there another way to pass GPS coordinates from a de-activated phone to a wifi device? It seems like it should be such an easy thing to do.

I would expect that your devices should see and be able to connect to your phone's WiFi tether, but they won't be able to go anywhere unless your phone has a mobile data connection.
Maybe with the device connected to the phone, you could use something like BlueNMEA or perhaps adapt GPSTether to work? (Both apps on Google play)
If you figure it out, please post how you did it, as others may be looking to do the same thing. Good luck!
Still trying to figure this one out. I guess if it was easy, I wouldn't have learned so much along the way.
According to the Android-Wifi-Tether site (http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/wiki/Setup_HTC_Desire_Incredible) the Droid Incredible is a special case. No mention of the Incredible 4G, so the workaround probably doesn't apply.
I guess I should try other Wifi tether apps and see if that's the problem.
Have you tried a custom ROM? I powered up my fireball last night with CM11 and I could connect my nexus 5 to it. I didn't get a chance to power up my old Nook Color to check if it shared location info. But it connected to the hotspot fine.

Success!
I installed CM11 on the phone. It now creates a WiFi hotspot with no internet access that my Kindle can access, and allows me to TetherGPS. I had to re-install all my apps on the phone, but I think I got that straight finally. Both the built-in WiFi tether and the Android WiFi Tether app seem to work.
So it must have been a limitation with the original OS that was keeping it from working.
If you'd have asked me two weeks ago if I thought I'd ever hack into and modify an old cell phone, I'd have said no way. Thanks to everyone who helped along the way.
Glad it worked out. Congratulations on the learning journey.

afaik the only way to unroot would be to use the flashtool to flash a stock ftf
edit: or maybe use the Full Unroot option is supersu, but Im not sure that returns you to stock completely like flashing a stock ftf.

Not experience this. If you haven't tried a data wipe I would give that a try. You'll spend less time setting your phone up again than you would trying to figure out why this is happening. Just one suggestion. Hopefully someone has a better answer

Here's hoping all goes well
OK. Factory reset from stock recovery, wiped cache from dual recovery, reloaded basic apps, disabled several & all has been working great.
Installed Xposed & 20MP Superior Auto then the phone will no longer go to Airplane mode or shut down the wireless connection.
Again hard reset, wiped cache, reloaded the backup from before installing Xposed...still won't shut down the wireless & go to airplane mode.
Can't imagine either of those would change the Airplane functionality. Not sure where to go from here.

It was the Setup Wizard! Disable or freeze that & Airplane won't work. What the hell? Time to try the 20MP Superior Auto again.

Good find
try wiping data and factory reset once again. i was also having the same problem but resolved by factory reset two times.
Memory card issues seem to be gone. Reactivated amplify & greenify the other day with no issue. Still need to turn on ad blocking.
Only issue I have now is the audio through my headphones keeps going out. Think my beats headset finally **** the bed. Now I have to figure out a decent pair.
Any suggestions?
I liked beats but some people say it is a gimmick when compared to "good" headphones. What's the best in your opinion?
