Unroot and Remove CWM (Australia) - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi XDA,
I have been loving my S3 and a few weeks back unrooted it so i could have a little more freedom. I have CWM 5.5.0.4 on it.
I havn't added a new rom and I would keep it rooted but I want to recieve samsung updates because CWM won't install them.
I have looked around and havn't been able to find a way around to install these updates.
So i would like to unroot my device and remove CWM.
I can handle having to go back to stock and lose my data but I am unable to find a recovery file for my region.
I'm Australian and have been looking through the link below's tutorial on reverting back and there has been no real indication of a file for Aus/Oceania.
Any help would be great thank you.

Instead of using CWM to update your ROM, why not use Odin?
Also do a *#1234* to find out what PDA/Phone/CSC version you have.

It's the updates Samsung requests me to do so it asks me to restart my phone. It will then boot into the cwm that i am fairly sure was put there by odin and it wont certify the installation. I wouldnt know how to manually get the updates.
Thanks for the tip on finding out the version.

How do i upgrade to 2.3.4 on a rooted pone ?

I have a sgs2 and rooted it with odin oneclick... now i cant upgrade to the latest firmware.. i think it's 2.3.4 (or if there is an even newer version out now) since it's rooted, can anyone help me out how to do this upgrade (to latest firmware) the easy way so i dont loose anything on the phone.
My current kernel is 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKDD-CL161513.........
Build number gingerbread xwke2 if this info helps..
Im would be very happy if someone would be so kind and help me with this, thanks in advance for any help.
Can you not use kies? Should still be able to use it rooted.
Root has nothing to do with KIES upgrades... If KIES says "This is the latest firmware" then it is indeed the latest firmware for your country/code... 2.3.4 is not yet released officially to many countries and country codes yet...
If you flashed somewhat BETA or custom ROM you get error like "You cannot upgrade this" or something similiar to that...
I get a error failure report, and to try using kies or something else. I tried doing the upgrade on the phone directly, checking for updates and downloading and installing, but everytime i get this error failure report
My phone is unlocked, and now i flashed it with original kernel to remove that annoying ! mark in bootup, so now i dont have a unsecure kernel any longer... but even with this original kernel now i couldnt upgrade the firmware using only the phone
Is it a must to use kies ? if so i will try it, cause i have a working kies on one computer. I just thought i could do it directly on the phone under checking for updates, but that way dont work for me.
So it does not matter if my phone is rooted when i want to update my firmware to newer like 2.3.4 or newer ?
You can just grab a stock rom from the thread in original dev and flash it via odin, kg6 is a good 2.3.4 rom, kh1 and 3 are a bit unknown at the moment.
Your best bet is to flash cf root on your phone, take a nandroid backup via it, use titanium backup or equivalent for your user apps and user app data (and some system data, as shown in green in the app) and do a full wipe, flash the new stock, and restore using titanium or equivalent.
The nandroid is a snapshot of your phone at the time, which will allow you to roll back to a known good point at any time.

No rooting wont effect kies. Try Kies first, See if indeed there is a update available to you. Like the previous poster said 2.3.4 is not available in all countries yet...
If your desperate to update you can use odin to upgrade the firmware instead..but that will wipe all data on your phone, so you will have to use Titatium Backup first. But if I were you I'd just use kies, and wait for the official update in your country.
Hmm if you can't update with KIES and you don't want to wipe then your best bet is to flash with ODIN with one of the frankenstien firmwares provided at one of the threads in the original development forum.
It did worked using kies on my computer, but it's still 2.3.3... guess it updated something minor then.
Thanks everyone for your help !
Does anyone know if i can remove the question mark in bootup and still be able to overclock the phone ?

Updates are as and when the provider of the phone updates the firmware .
They do not use all Samsung updates and often push them out much later .
Does anyone know if i can remove the question mark in bootup and still be able to overclock the phone
Yes via the instructions in root thread
Root + CWM .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Or by using the USB jig .

I know after root i can flash with the original, but that seams to remove the possibility to overclock the device but the root are still there after flashing with original.

No you flash root then flash original wipes root .
You would be better to find an overclocking rom and work from the instructions there .

It's flashing the kernel im talking about. When rooting a phone you flash the phone with a unsecure kernel, then after it's rooted you can flash it back to original kernel so the "!" mark wont show in bootup.
Now i wounder how to do that and still keep the overclocking feature, anyone know how to do that ?

If the overclocking features are part of the kernel then flashing original kernel replaces the kernel that has the overclocking features .

Yes that was what o thought Thanks everyone so much for all your help!!
I guess i just have to live with this "!" mark on bootup, no big deal
Look at chainfires post number 2 on this thread to remove triangle and still keep insecure kernal here

[Q] Flashing Roms after CF root?

Hi everyone I just bought a Galaxy S 2 four days ago. I rooted it with CF root via Odin. Thanks to Chainfire for that. What I wanted to ask was that the kernel just roots the phone and provides us with Superuser and all the rest of the apps. If I make a back up from CWM will it back up my whole Os which is Stock Samsung Touchwiz?
And also I would like to ask, Can I start flashing Roms now through CWM Flash zip option?
I am facing another problem I am trying to check for any updates but the problem is that when i try to check for updates it always says that it has failed even when i am connected to wifi!
Can anyone please help me with that too!
Thanks in advance!

Whole OS and apps but you need first time have an EFS backup seperate see threads .

Only if the rom instructs you to flash via CWM .

OTA updates on phone do nor work use KIES but you have changed your firmware and codes may no longer match for KIES updates .

JJE, sort your quoting out man xD
Anyway.
1) Yes if you make a backup in CWM it will back everything on your phone up, including everything in /system.
2) Yes you can start flashing ROMs.
3) Because you're rooted Kies stuff will not longer work.

[Q] Sgs2 best way to upgrade to ics from gingerbread 2.3.3

Hi all I've been on this for a while, since the weekend looked at a serious amount of posts and guides on rooting and unrooting but I'm no further forward.
The problem I have is I wanted to upgrade from gingerbread to ics so I could eventually put the latest cyanogen mod on my phone. I rooted the phone no problem there flashed an insecure kernel with odin 1.85 as per the instructions from one of the guides got the CWM and superuser apps then flashed the original back, got rid of the yellow triangle every thing good so far. I did this coz I expected I had to, to put cyanogenmod on my phone.
Samsung kies says there is a update to ICS but every time I try to update it fails. Try using Odin with a stock mod and it fails. I rang Samsung and they say my build number is the up to date version. One of my colleagues has an older sgs2 and he managed to update his no problem with kies. I'm wondering if there is a problem with my phone preventing it from being updated? Also every time a look at a post or a guide it seems like that post is specific to a particular android version and I can't find one that is specific to mine such as carrier Orange, gingerbread2.3.3 as I think it's too old. PDA I9100BVKH2.
Now I'm thinking I might just try unrooting it and take it to orange and get them to update it but uprooting it to stock seems to be a pain, I need to get rid of that doing flash counter.
Do I need to go to orange or is this easy to update and I'm just missing something. Before I get flamed I did search not just here but all over the Internet to find a reason why I couldn't update but didn't get a definitive answer.

There are two ways to do this:
1. Update the phone to ICS on your own.
- Visit Sammobile
- Download the firmware for your country/carrier
- Extract the zip file.
- Flash the firmware via odin
- Boot to recovery and perform a factory reset.
done.
2. Reset your binary counter and take it to Orange!
- you can use USB jig to reset your counter.
or
- Flash a Samsung based custom rom via CWM recovery,
- Download Triangle away app by Chainfire
- Use Triangle away app, to reset your binary counter
- flash back your Stock ROM (you can also get it from Sammobile if you dont have a copy)
- take your phone to Orange.
done.
cheers
OK thanks for your help. will give it a go.
You dont need kies or orange-this is why your getting confused. You could go to sammobile and get an unbranded ics for your region/model,and to be "safe",go for 4.0.3.
Then you can flash like siyah kernel, make a nand backup, and efs backup then install whatever rom you want.

would like to try that but now odin failed after i flashed a stock rom and now i'm stuck on the samsung galaxy logo with no recovery mode. I can get into download mode though but thats it.
Odin wont flash anything exept kernels.
Seriously thinking about throwing it in the bin. Now i spend days trying to get the phone usable again. why the hell cant i flash roms WTF!
Thanks for your replies.
There's a wealth of knowledge on this forum but i cant seem to find a solution on here to get my phone back.
Ive got my phone back. used upstairs pc and flashed original insecure kernel and recovery came up. ive now done a factory reset. back to square one but at least phone is back on. guess it was the laptop i was using. What is that all about?
Looking at all the how to's on upgrading to ICS i thought if i stuck to the steps it would just work but it didn't
Thanks for every ones input.

[Q] Rooting/CWM interfere with OTA Updates ?

Hey guys,
I am not new to the rooting or CWM scene but I like to double check these things with different phone models just in case as I do not want an expensive brick, especially with the S3 as I am looking to get one of these bad boys.
My question is, If I root/Install CWM will this cause issues with OTA updates or updates through Samsung Kies ? Or once an Update is installed would I simply need to re-root and install CWM again ?
I was taking a look at this thread and it bought my question to mind: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703488
I would for now like to stick to the Stock Roms and just want to be aware of the consequences of having Root/CWM and Updating my phone.
Cheers guys.
If you root, your device status will show as "Modified," and you won't get OTA updates.
Not a big deal as long as XDA is up and running, IMO. You'll get update here faster than you'll get them OTA anyway in nearly all cases.

Ahh right, what about CWM ? As you say, even if I cannot Update OTA or through Kies I can use Odin. I guess I just need to find out about installing any updates with CWM installed, Though I should imagine nothing will happen as the stock recovery would be put back and I would simply have to install CWM again but any further info would be great
Thanks !

If you use desktop Odin to flash, you'll lose the custom recovery and be reverted to stock recovery. You'll likely need to relfash the recovery again as well as root, unless the ROM you flash via Odin is pre-rooted.
Mobile Odin will allow you to flash the tar file and keep root, recovery, etc. 99% of the time, I use mobile Odin for stock ROMs these days.

Tried rooting S3, didn't work, need help.

I am very new at this, so I apologize in advance. I have the Virgin Mobile Galaxy S3 SPH-L710 running 4.3.
I simply wanted to root it so i could get rid of the bloatware and install Sixaxis and play emulators, but I didn't really know where to start, so I started looking around and found this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2546505
So I basically did everything on there. I used Odin to install PhilZ Touch 6 Recovery (CWM 6.0.4.7) Did factory reset, wiped cache/dalvik. then installed the Odexed MK5 stock rooted zip, wifi fix zip, SuperSU update zip, and then the knox app remover zip.
Everything flashed just fine and it started right up. It had the Super Su app, but when I tried to install apps that need root permission it would say I don't have root access. I couldn't delete bloat apps and Super Su didn't show any apps and there isn't much I can do with it. So I guess it didn't work? Either way I wanted to try a different rom. Was gonna give Cyanogenmod a try. But every time I try to install it I get the little "Android bot laying on his back" thing and it says status 7. I tried to flash CM10, CM10.1, CM10.2, CM11. Nothing worked, same thing every time. Even tried different SD cards just in case of a mess up.
The phone itself works fine for now, calls and text work, wifi works. And it says there is an update, but when i hit accept, it reboots to recovery mode, does the "android fallen over" then boots back up.
Now here is my stupid part, I didn't backup the original cause the guide didn't say to. (Not blaming them, i should have know better) So I am assuming I have a messed up version of 4.3 and Cyanogenmod doesn't know what to do with me. I'm not sure. Here is where I am stumped.
I can get into Download mode, I can get into Recovery and the phone boots up just fine and I can use it like a normal phone, and I have a back up my current set up, so when something fails I can still revert back to a working phone, but I can't seem to get any other roms to install. Thank you very much in advance for any help.
You need to update your recovery that is why you are getting the status 7 error, also this is for the i9300 international model not yours, just to let you know

Pretty sure the sph model is sprint. So best to find the file for that because if you flash a file not intended for your model you will brick your phone.
No worries at all, glad to help
