Hypersensitive Screen - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey xda.
For months now my screen has frequently had an issue where it randomely starts selecting a part of the screen and i lose all control until i turn the screen off/on.
Issue persists through every rom and "tweak", as well as between full fastboot wipes.
Seems triggered by the faintest moisture. Im talking light sweat on my fingers, or the subtle humidity of breath half a foot away!!
Is this a hardward problem? Notably, my screen has slowly been "popping out" at the corner where the camera is for quite awhile. Its never been dropped, so im thinking design flaw.
Amusingly it happened as i typed this and prematurely posted the thread ...
Atrix -- because newer and more expensive isn't always better.

As far as I know this is an issue caused by a dying digitizer. I have the same problem and can't fix it either, haven't tried replacing the digitizer yet

I still have this issue and the Digitiser was replaced by T-Mobile under warranty. The problem went from a 10 to a 1 on a scale of 1 to 10 after they replaced it. But it 'is' still there. Clearly some kind of design fault/component fault with the majority of Atrix's every made.
Turning screen on and off always stops it happening.
A tiny bit of sweat on my fingers makes typing anything hell.
Get the digitiser replaced under warranty. They still did mine even though it was unlocked. It didn't cure it on mine, but like I said, it went from wanting to throw it through a window to actually usable, if annoying at times.

Hi,
Try the Raindrop Fix by Notorious544d maybe? ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1467696 )

I was having similar problems xhazk and I did the raindrop fix and so far so good. I'd definitely suggest you give it a try.

I had the problem on Neutrino too, which includes raindrop fix I assume (notorious made both).
Ill give it a try on the CM7 nightly im using anyway. =\

I'm using neutrino as well, it doesn't have the fix, you need to install it

Sounds like the ribbon connection for your digitizer is ether distressed or the connector is unseated. That little half inch peace of ribbon has very little tolerance. If your glass (this is the actual digitizer) is separating from the frame repeatedly then its a safe bet your problem is physical. If its still working fine order a pre cut adhesive strip from eBay and stick it back on . Otherwise its going to stop working soon.

Sounds plausible Cab.
Looks like Ill be taking this thing apart soon.

I'd try the raindrop fix first though, I was having similar problems and now my phone works perfect.

Yea im always a fan of simple first. All else fails component replacement. If you have to do a tear down and you would with a didgitiser do a youtube search for "Atrix teardown". Patience and a how to will get you threw it. You get frustrated take a break and walk away for a little while. Never use force. If you have done it before then you know better already and anyone else with this problem now knows lol.

Ya I did attemp "raindrop fix". Was not a solution in my case.
Fortunately I have been tearing hardware down since i was about 6 so it's second nature.

Good luck with it man. Hopefully it works out for you!

Wanted to give it a few days, but applying "raindrop fix" on cm7 20120805 seems to have... lessened the issue to rare occurences so its tolerable now.

Possible fix for digitizer/touch screen issues

Like many with the 3d I was having touch screen issues. Ghost touching and inaccurate touches. At first it was infrequent and random but started getting worse and to the point where it became unusable today. I have tep but no stores around here had a digitizer in stock. My phone was useless so in a desperate shot in the dark, I tried putting it in the freezer.
That's right.
I took the battery out, put it inside two ziplock bags and froze it for a few hours. The I took it out. Left it in the bags to return to room temp and then powered it on. I've been using it for a few hours now and haven't had one issue yet.
Please note this might somehow kill your phone and don't try it unless you are desperate.

Mine usually does this when its cold. I have thought about replacing the digitizer but its not frequent enough and locking and unlocking a couple of times fixes it. I would rather deal with it then get the hboot 1.5 crap...

Mine was fine until last night. Now I can hardly use it. Landscape works somewhat, the only problem is not all apps support it. I found a digitizer+lcd with the full housing for $55 so I jumped on that.

Odd, I always have had some sort of problem with my digitizer when I go outside for a cig. I live in WI, so it's about 0 degrees out right now or colder lol (actually tonight it's rather warm outside but meh)
Anyway, About an inch below the top of my phone to about an inch and 1/4 my screen is dead, I could post a screenshot of it if someone wants. I've been thinking about brining it back to sprint but I don't want to risk them updating the hboot to 1.5 lol
It did seem to temporarily fix the device but came back the next day.
They did it to me I hnow have 1.5....they agreed my phone needed to be replaced...then said the 3D is on back order... They asked if i would take a photon...I said yes....that was a week ago....I called today and they said 'oh, the photon is on back order too' that was a 3rd party retailer....
So I called Sprint and there is actually a corporate store close to me....I'm going to get a new phone tomorrow, I hope! Any suggestions on a replacement if they still don't have a 3d!?
I had the same problem. One of the guys at best buy was tryin to say I probably dropped it... I'm like fk u, I got it like this... The other guy checked it out and said,"ive never seen this happen, but looks fine, physically I guess". Checked it for water damage and just replaced it since it hadn't been 30 days. Then I'm seeing more people with the same problem. If u have insurance with sprint, it should be somethin they take in and give u a refurbished one at no charge. At a Sprint repair store

I am an EVO 3d GSM user for a week.I don't have any problems with ghost touching etc
Is this a problem only for the CDMA users? Some of my friends also got the GSM version and also they don't have any problems.
My digitizer has been acting up lately as well. I may take it into a sprint store and see what they can do with it..... I don't want them to replace my phone with one that has hboot 1.5 or update my hboot to 1.5.
Be careful....when I brought mine in they tried to say "the touch screen is fine, it looks like a software issue..." And despite saying in advance, I left w 1.5 and the promise of a replacement which also came w 1.5
...just my experience....

I take great care of my phone and this bs started happening to me.
Well, sort of.
My phone will register touches on the screen randomly if I smack the back of the phone (not hard or anything, just a quick smack, like sitting it down on a desk type deal) and it will randomly stop registering touches at all until press the power button to put it in standby, then again to turn it on.
What kind of crap is this? God I can't stand HTC's terrible quality control. I don't have a single mark on my phone. It has NEVER been dropped. It is in flawless condition.
So mad right now.
I feel ya bud.... I am hoping to ride out this replacement till my upgrade in June....

If I had to take a stab at it, that cold weather means cold fingers, which means no touch screen.... Which means it will appear to be an issue when in fact your fingers r just cold..... Try it out, hold onto a cold drink, let your fingers get nice and cold and touch your screen... No response.... But what do I know... I'm in Florida where its 80 degrees outside
I do know our phones do have issues and I'm not saying the cold is the cause of everyone's issue... Just looking at the big picture... Or trying to. Hope everyone gets it worked out.

A friend of mine has the EVO 3D (it's GSM, not CDMA - and I'm seeing a lot of you having the CDMA versions) and I am a Desire HD owner. Both touch screens are great! Also, I can use them with gloves (well, the place where the finger tips are, the material got somewhat rare). In any case, we are not experiencing any problems with his touch screen, and it's -5 to -15 Centigrades outside .
I'd say it's because of the CDMA?! I also heard that some Galaxy S (I9000) users were having troubles with their phones bought from the EU, then brought to US. Screen displaying colours/bars like crazy etc...
I'd say the network pretty much interferes with the internals of the phone. That's just my opinion...
Both the Desire HD and EVO 3D touch screens DO act strange, but that's when it's snowing outside, so the screen gets a bit wet and... you know... it's making it too horny to focus on the touches anymore... he wants more than just a touch... XD
This is an HTC issue, I believe HTC should almost have like a recall for this. Fix it for free. Not by us paying money to get it fixed. I'm dropping HTC phones and going elsewhere for a phone.
sorry wrong thread
FIX~~maybe
Ok so after 24 hours of testing I got ghost touches only 2 times.anyway my phone used to have ghost touches every like 2 min...
Solution: search for "pimp my rom" in the market.(it requires root access btw)
After you install it go to tweaks->touch screen and display and set min. Velocity to 2500 and max velocity to 4500. For your phone the values may differ.so feel free to test other values till you get the best results. Also max events per sec should be at 60. After ur done just apply your settings.top left check Mark.
If this didn't work it could be a hardware issue.but for me it did the trick.I still get some ghost touches so they are not gone forever but its way better now.
Hope this helps peeps.

Touchscreen issues

For the past couple of months, my screen has been detecting too many inputs on the top half of the screen, primarily in the middle of it. One finger seems to produce up to four inputs sometimes, depending on the amount of pressure. I'm not mashing the screen or anything, but I do play the occasional game of pew-pew.
I've tried a keyboard recallibration and a full wipe to no avail. Currently running ViperROM, but I don't think that's the issue. Any suggestions before I try my luck with the repair plan?
I have the same issue. Looks to be hardware related.
Try uninstall third party lock screen...
I'm using sense for that.
I had that issue for a while. I had to completely wipe and change roms. I think I found a lock screen was to blame. as the other poster pointed out.
Using LeeDroid, I got rid of the sense lockscreen and went back to the droid one. Nothing seemed to change.
When this first happened on a previous ViperROM build, I had been using it for a long time. After doing a full wipe and upgrading to the newest version of it, the problem came back immediately. So, I really doubt it's got something to do with that.

That's actually how I noticed the extra inputs to begin with. They only show up while touching the screen.
Edit: A little weirdness. I accidentally left it under my laptop for a few hours. Now, I only get one extra input instead of three. It seems to detect up to four just fine, though.
I found my problem related to this was using a screen protector, the anti glare and clear had these phantoms touches, even from breathing on the screen wrong.
Removed since its got gorilla glass anyways, no more issues.

Ive got your answer guys! its the screen digitalizier had the same exact problems for months to the point of throwing it, sometimes i would put a new rom on it and it would fix it for a couple hours and then it would come back I called a cell phone repair place in st louis called. CRP they have local shops and a website you can send it in. It takes about 2 hours if you have a shop around you or send it off. Call around to see if you have any cell phone repair shops near you Ok by now, you guys are dieing too know the price right, $89.99 plus tax for local repair was my price. Beware you can buy this part from amazon with a kit for $25 and theres video guides online too but unless your use to this kind of work ,pay for a shop to do it or buy the whole lcd screen which is over a hundred dollars anyway. I hope my advice helped you guys because im so happy to have my 3vo running like new again.

[Q] Why would an Atrix touch screen randomly go completely unresponsive?

So my bro's had an Atrix for a little over a year.
Some time back, it started exhibiting this behaviour where the whole screen would just become totally unresponsive.
Searching around, I see issues where people lose responsiveness with a fraction of their touch screen, or the entire screen starts spazzing out with all these presses and swipe actions the user did not enter...
...but his just seems to have these periods. He'll be stuck at the lock screen from anywhere between 1 minute and a whole day... I can usually get it to work with random rapidfire hardware commands... and when it works, it works completely for a certain amount of time.
Thing is, that's only temporary, and the touch-screen ends up going back to an unresponsive state.
Any clue what's going on, or how to resolve it?
What's the software is he currently on? Is the phone bootloader unlocked and/or rooted?

You know what's (not so) funny about this? All of the things that you think are causing this sound really complicated. Is my phone corrupt? hardware defective?? etc etc.
You know what I found it caused this behavior after numerous factory resets and weeks of research and tweaks to my phone?
The f-ing goddam screen protector.
Yep, that's right. The over-priced, highly (over)rated $20 iShields brand one. I know for a fact that was the cause, after I figured it out and started talking to other atrix owners (minus the liar fanboys that lurk in every forum saying "works fine for me derp!" whenever someone dares to suggest a product has flaws).
Problem immediately went away, forever. I've gone naked since May /11 without a single scratch. IMO screen protectors on gorilla glass is for people who wear a seat belt in a car wash. I'm not sure, but I suspect the problem happens when the screen protector starts to age, and/or when it gets really warm. I also suspect it's a problem with certain phones and the types of touchscreens on those phones not playing nice with screen protectors. Started happening on mine after just one month.

Just to offer some backstory, this started a couple months ago back when he just had the stock AT&T rom (2.3.X or 2.2.X I think? I can't recall clearly) During one of it's "working" periods (last week), I unlocked his bootloader and flashed it with CM9...
Probably won't mean much since the problem existed before I unlocked+CM9'ed it, but while it's not freaking out, I can give you some numbers:
• Model Number: MB860
• Android Version: 4.0.3
• Baseband Version: N_01.77.15P

ah ok in that case, I have nothing else, I'm only good for ranting. GL!
My touchscreen randomly does these freak outs and stops working:
Usually for me it is caused when the phone is really warm (like on the charger in the car) or when my hands are sweaty (also could just be the the phone is warm in this case as well)
Once it's done with its freak out, I turn off the screen (my power button still works) and clean off the screen with my shirt, wipe the sweat off my hands and turn it back on...everything is then fine.
Also, with my old phone (dell streak) if I kept the phone in my pocket with the screen facing towards my leg it would exhibit this behavior (probably again a case of the screen becoming really warm) but if I kept it screen out it was fine.
I have the same exact problem and have gone back to my Captivate because I couldn't figure it out.

News on this? Here's my experience.
Any news on this, guys? I'm going insane. Here's my experience: I used to get these touchscreen-stops now and then but then they started getting more and more often. What I do to make them stop for a while is a clean restore, that is wiping boot, system, preinstall, cache, userdata with fastboot before installing a new ROM or restoring from backup. Whenever I do that, it comes back to life. If I flash a new ROM without all those wipes, it doesn't work. What sucks so bad is that, even though that fixes the problem, it's only temporary. It starts again after a few weeks. There is NO way this is hardware, and there's also NO way we can't find a solution for this!!!! Come on, guys!!! HELP US OUT, PLEASE!!!!!!!
Have you tried the raindrop fix? I was having similar problems and it worked for me.

I'm having the same issue
I'm having the exact same issue. It sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. Anywhere from one minute to a whole day, everything you described exactly. No screen protector. I wiped it once and it worked temporarily, but it's back to the old sporadic unresponsiveness again.
I'm still not convinced that it isn't a hardware issue. I'm going to buy a T5 Torx Screwdriver and open her up and see if one of the connections is loose. Has anyone else done this?
I'll post tomorrow night with my results.
Here is a handy trick to determine if your digitizer it going out.
1. Find an appliance like a cable set top box, AV receiver or computer for example
2. Lay your phone face down in the warm air that emits from devices like this.
3. Leave it alone for about 10 to 15 minutes.
4.Pick your phone up and perform some finger swipe heavy tasks.
If you notice its a lot more sensitive like you remember when you first got it then you have a digitizer that is going bad. If nothing changes then its most likely software related.

Could be the ribbon behind the digitizer, if its loose or moves it can kill all response to touch. You may have to replace your digitizer to fix this.

I would also suspect the digitizer. I replaced mine for $45 (frame pre attached attached highly recommended).
The connections are very small, so there is much that can go wrong while doing this kind of brain surgery and the ribbons will rip easily.

Soooo, how long did it take for this discoloration to go away? Because I just realized that I've got it too.
I only noticed it when I turned the brightness all the way up and played an episode of "Firefly" on Netflix to kill the battery. When the phone automatically turned off, the discoloration was very obvious against the whiteness of the splash screen. I usually keep the screen brightness fairly low to conserve battery, plus my wallpapers are rarely brightly colored. I wouldn't have noticed it otherwise.
(And this is why I've never been an early adopter; I like for the bugs to be worked out before I buy something. Damn you, Verizon, for forcing me to an early upgrade.)

Well, the iPhones/iPads had this problem. It's simply the adhesive that bonds the display to the glass. It likely hasn't fully cured and using the phone is enough to heat it up and have it fully cure

First post here, hello all. Got my phone on friday last week and noticed a yellow spot (mine was in the lower right, basically on top of the 4th icon in the default dock)
I believe this is spot due to heat. It will show up when I am messing with the phone a lot, but if I set it down or power it off it will go away. I am not surprised to see others are having the same issue, but I was a little surprised to see that the spots were in different locations. I figured there was an especially hot component house behind my spot.
Interesting...
I have two of these phones now with no issues. Must be some bad batches out there... *sigh* c'mon HTC, quality control.

I also cannot report having this issue. However, for the people who do have the issue, considering how cool this phone runs, I'm not sure general use would be enough to heat it up to a temperature that would affect the adhesive if that's the problem. Maybe leave the phone on the charger at max brightness on a white screen for a while?

The employees at Best Buy also thought it's due to heat. I honestly think it's just a few bad batches. I exchanged my phone at the same Best Buy where I originally purchased the phone, and second phone has the same discoloration in the same exact spot as the first phone. I plan on exchanging my phone one last time before the 30 day exchange period is up and hopefully the batch in stock at that time won't have this issue.

I also cannot report having this issue. However, for the people who do have the issue, considering how cool this phone runs, I'm not sure general use would be enough to heat it up to a temperature that would affect the adhesive if that's the problem. Maybe leave the phone on the charger at max brightness on a white screen for a while?

On two occasions I tried watching a few shows on Netflix on full brightness for at least an hour. After the hour was up, the discoloration was definitely more visible; there was no lessening of the spots. Perhaps I didn't run it long enough.

I think we should start taking pictures and circling the spots. I will post mine later tonight. If it is indeed some screen defect or adhesive problem, that could explain why it was happening in different spots (if it is) If the heat spots are clustered in one area, maybe there is some specific component producing heat in that area that is discoloring it locally.

Yeah, I had the same thought about the components. I'll try and take a picture later this evening.

[Q] screen pressing itself automatically?!?!

hey guys.
I gifted my mom my Evo 3D a bit over a month ago. It was in perfect condition after a year of use. she says she hasn't sat on it. no screen cracks, no indications of any physical abuse.
we first thought it was the keyboard. and she had been telling me of so many issues she was having. so I updated her to freeza's 5.5 rom, sense 3.6 version (how come I didn't see any JB roms?! I've been on JB for a while...).
same thing kept happening. i started looking into it. turned on the pointer touches thing in developer options...turns out, the screen keeps pressing itself exactly in the middle horizontally, and about 85% of the way down vertically.
sometimes it keeps pressing so when it's a keyboard up, it presses the letter v continuously. but it presses everywhere. so it makes phone calls, selects things in market, selects in root explorer, etc. sometimes it gets "stuck" on pressing down, so nothing else works. you can see the pointer is stuck as if it was being pressed.
in TWRP i couldn't select the last item in the list (the one i was trying to flash!) but all other "lines" could be selected.
there are other issues (since we're on MetroPCS) but I can figure that out after the screen issue. since it happens across roms and in TWRP, I'm fairly confident this is not a software issue?
what can I do? is replacing the digitizer a sound idea? how much would that run me? how difficult is it to do? i'm trying to wonder if it's just a better idea for her to get a new phone....
any help with this is highly welcome. this is WEIRD!
id say the digitalizer. around 80,-, google. since you flashed another rom, it's highly unlikely its software..
Mine also does that. Rarely though. I thought it was because of protective film. Turning screen off and on fixes this.
I also have the same problem when typing with wet fingers.

Your digitizers are dying
My advice is to keep a stuck ruu in your phone's sdcard in case of scenerios like this one because we all know that sprint techs may not even touch the phone if they discover your rooted and s-off. So, getting back on stock with "locked" bootloader is your next move. Thankfully that procedure doesn't involve using the touchscreen.
Take off any screen protectors, and make sure you are using the default HTC lock screen - HTC hard coded the calibration for the screen into the lock screen. If still problems, then yeah, you need the digitiEr

you missed the boat there. i'm on MetroPCS and so is that Evo 3D...not to mention this phone is 1.5 years old and has had its warranty voided multiple times

that was my first thought. to remove the old screen protector. but no, it's definitely messed up
no problems. the same store I bought that phone from and my other Evo 3D and the two Galaxy S3s from does repairs and they replace the lcd and the digitizer for $80. i've dealt with them for years now so I trust them.

Uhm... the digitizer for our phone costs about $10 or so... and from what you said your LCD is just fine... so I really wouldn't trust a store that's offering a $10 fix for $80... so bottom line just check if they can just replace the digitizer as it's the exact same procedure...
well looking online it looked like the whole thing was $60-100. on this thread i was told about $80.
that's not the issue though, problem is putting it together. I watched the video of the step by step, and there's way too many ways I can mess it up, and then my mom is out of a phone, instead of spending $80 for guaranteed work.
On my iphone I had a dead spot in the middle where you could see the digitizer was discolored if you looked at it at an angle.
I had a screen protector(or clear plastic, etc) placed between the LCD glass and the digitizer and it fixed the problem.
I guess it kept even pressure between the glass and the digitizer.
Worth a try if you don't mind experimenting but YMMV.
Don't risk it if you aren't confident though... I did it to my iphone because I hated it, lol.
Good luck.
well this is weird.
i'm supposed to take the phone to be repaired tomorrow morning (Thursday) so I decided to beforehand update everything on her phone.
I did a superwipe, installed the latest TWRP, flashed the ICS firmware, including Hboot 1.58 (i'm still S-OFF, thank goodness), flashed Cool ICS 12a...
and the phone is behaving like new. no screen pressing, no difficulty typing, over the last two hours of setting it up for my mom...it's as if it was brand new.
so now i'm wondering if somehow it got fixed and we can save ourselves the expense, or if this is a temporary fix and it'll go back to messing up...
I'm GSM, rom is without sense. But sense rom had the same issue.
Is it possible to calibrate screen without sense?
