Have you tried factory reset? There is a chance you could lose data though.
If you dont want to lose data then go into download mode and flash the official ROM via odin this should recover your ROM and you wont lose anything
The /data partition could be corrupted already. If you really need the data try do a Nandroid backup from CWM, wipe, and dig up the data later in PC.
Still, I cannot guarantee that it will work though.

estimate, this phone does not turn, so I can not see the kernel version or install the nandroid. There are some generic rom to install? root was not, thank you very much
Well, I tell them I've got: I installed the ROM Unbranded from Argentina without achieving any progress, then install the kernel-CF-Root-v4.1-CWM4 SGS2_UH_MUL_KG7 without progress but I also discovered that the download menu (V +, home , power) was enabled nandroid!! thus perform a full system backup, wipe data / factory and Encendio!! Now I have to figure out how to unzip the backup on the PC nandroid to import contacts and notes mainly.

You can download the CWM zip to temporarily load CWM with the stock recovery, then do nandroid backup from there
BEWARE THOUGH, if you are on 4.0.4 and using the stock kernel, it will cause brick. If you're not in 4.0.4, or have changed the kernel (if you don't know what a kernel is, then most probably you haven't changed kernel)
-So you just can download this http://download2.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.1.5-galaxys2.zip
-Put that on your sdcard
-Flash that zip from Stock Recovery, and it will boot CWM
-Do a nandroid backup
-Mount the phone as mass storage to PC, move the nandroid to PC

Thank you very much for your information, now everything is working, just that I find how to read the files *.img nandroid generated because attempts to restore it with the same menu nandroid from the recovery of the S2 the phone back to stay in boot loop.
Now I have discovered a wonderful application called nandroid BROWSER with which I can "walk" img files but I do not encuentr nandroid genre folders / data / data / .... where supposedly contacts and notes are stored on different routes each course. but if I found a path .//app/contacts.apk other ./app/contacts.odex but I can not open or install. will be these? not meeting the equivalent of /data/data/com.sec.android.app.memo/files. Thanks

KcLKcL, thanks for your information, unfortunately I could not retrieve the information most important to that team who were the contacts and notes. I returned my computer because I use a lot for work, but not before teaching synchronize with KIES to have backup of all your information. A hug and thank you very much for the help.

Hi Obagleyfreer - sorry for being a total noob, but bewildered by the amount of data out their and having followed a load of threads related to my issue and not getting far, I turn to your seniority for support.
My galaxy s2 is stuck in a recurring error-message loop on startup leaving the phone (im pretty sure) innacessible. I can open download and reset modes though. about 20% of my dissertation data exists as photos on the phone hard-drive, and my thoughts are I might be able to recover it via rooting the phone (it currently is running gingerbread). Unfortunately the computer doesnt recognize the device when it is plugged in. You mention flashing odin - can this be done via 'update from SD' in the reset menu? I was under the impression I had to download CWM from the appstore before I could root and flash a rom, which I cant do.
I could provide many details (such as it being in airplane mode preventing me from installing apps on the phone from my pc) but i wont bore you with details if you cant help. but if you can I'd really appreciate it!

Hello All
Spent the last few weeks looking at custom roms for the Galaxy SII and hope to install one soon.
My phone is already rooted and I use Titanium backup pro to do a backup of all my app and system data.
Once my new rom is installed I would like to restore my phone back to a state where it has my apps and information e.g. text messages, whats app contacts etc I already use backup to gmail and sync my contacts with my google account so not too worried about this.
Any suggestions on things I should backup before I install. Is it possible to install a custom rom and preserve the data?? I doubt not but thought I would ask.
I installed a custom rom when I had a HTC Desire and that was pretty much straightforward. Seems ever easier on the SII but are there any gotchas I should be aware of?

Installing a custom ROM whilst keeping you current System's "state" is possible in theory. I absolutely don't recommend it, though.
In custom ROMs, there's often a lot of changes compared to an original ROM. That means you CAN use Titanium Backup, etc., but then errors and FCs might happen. Even when installing a new custom ROM over another, it's ALWAYS better to wipe everything and re- download your Apps from the market (If you have the option ticked, your device will even reinstall all apps automatically after you logged in with your Gmail-Account... )
So, in a nutshell, I'd highly recommend not to restore old saved settings, Apps, or anything else.
I use to backup apps /w data with titanium backup and sms with a sms backup app. I has worked fin every time. I do not recommend to backup settings though.

If your phone is rooted and you have cwm recovery, I would suggest you boot into recovery and backup that way. At least if you aren't happy with the custom rom you can restore the backup and your phone will be exactly like it was before.
BTW, I've rarely had problems restoring user apps and data on new roms via titanium. Generally system apps etc give you errors.
For contacts I backup to SD card, and for SMS, apns, bookmarks and call logs I use market apps.
Also, I would suggest a no-wipe custom rom because most data is preserved anyway. They generally recommend wiping this or that first but I never do and havent had many problems in the past.

I have tried to backup using the Nandroid backup. I have ROM manager installed and if I try to reboot into recovery or create a backup it doesnt successfully work.
It comes up with an error when in recovery which says
'failed to verify whole-file signature'
signature verification failed.
Please help.

Don't use rom manager. Reboot into recovery manually using the 3 button method : volume up + power + home.
If you don't see backup there you don't have cwm recovery (I suspect you don't). I would recommend then to flash cf-root via Odin to get it.
Edit: rom manager on its own will not give you cwm as it can't flash it on a stock kernal. You need a custom kernal with the required recovery - 2e I think. So flash cf-root.

I am trying to flash a new ROM (checkROM rev HD3.1.1) and I am currently using a custom ROM (CM7.1). In CWM 5.0.2.7 I see a lot of wipe options and don't really know which one i should do. Correct me if am wrong please, but i should do 'wipe data/factory reset' and 'wipe cache partition' from the main menu, and 'wipe dalvik cache' 'wipe battery stats' from the 'advanced menu'?
what about all the format (ie, format data/ format cache/ etc.) option in 'mounts and storage' menu, is this for an external sd-card?

Thanks for that. Any instructions on how I would go about doing this flash cf-root. I dont really get that if I be honest.
All I can tell you is recently I upgraded to 2.3.5 via kies for my galaxy S 2. I then had to re-root the phonea and now I am runnin the following:
Android version - 2.3.5
Baseband version - I9100XXKI4
Kernel version - 2.6.35.7-i9100XWKDD-CL161513
build number - gingerbread.XWKJ1
When I looked at all the different flash cf-root options I didnt know which one was the one I should use for my phone. The process within Odin I'm fine with...

Last night, I installed TW 4.5/TW Manager. I did a ClockworkMod backup first. I decided to restore it.
However, after restoration, the phone is in a factory state. Save for my lock pattern, which it remembered, the phone is in first-run setup mode, all my home screen layouts are gone, all my apps are not in the aop drawer except those the G2 ships with. Contents of the virtual SD card like photos are still there.
I tried restoring my only other CWM backup (a November backup that previously *restored ok* to undo a MIUI test, for example), but this, too, now boots in to the same state.
What has gone wrong here?
And is there any way of getting back the system that I assume/d is/was in the CWM backup files?
If I can't guarantee I can restore a CWM backup, it makes the world a very scary place to be.

Wiped data, Wiped cache, Restored backup - still doesn't retrieve the actual backup.
Now wiped again. In Advanced Restore, what should I do?

This doesn't work either.
I had the same trouble early last month; even after a restore it was pretty much factory settings and I had to put everything back myself.
It was very irritating as I'd taken the precaution of making a backup but it still didn't work. I've pretty much recovered everything I needed to since then, though.
What excactly did you do prior to the restoring? Did you flash a new rom? If yes, what was your previous rom? Or is TW4.5 an app of some kind?

Installed TouchWiz 4.5, a modified TouchWiz launcher (left it alongside TouchWiz, set no default - home button press asked for confirmation of home screen each time)
TW4.5 comes with the TW4Manager app for controlling settings.
I downloaded the Suava theme for use with TW 4.5.
Before any of that, I made a CWM backup. Then I did the above. Now the backup (and even a backup which restored perfectly a month ago) will not restore to anything but factory new state.
And you are not getting an error message of any kind? How long does it take to restore? What is the size of the backup?

Hmm, are you talking about kernel?
If I'm correctly reading my rough notes from my rooting and tinkering, then my original kernel was KF3, I rooted in mid-October with an insecure equivalent (KF3) (CF-Root method), but quickly upgraded through Kies... I now have kernel XWKI4 (baseband XXKI1, build KI4).
So I moved from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4.
BUT - the backup and restore I did with CWM under the current system as recently as two weeks ago in November worked fine.

So, you're saying there - you think a newer version of CWM might have eliminated a bug or something?

I really don't know. But I think it's worth the effort determining of your CWM is still functioning properly.
You can also try just flashing the KI4 CF-root kernel, then boot in recovery and then try to restore.
Make sure you have important stuff backuped of course

Then try posted below . boots to working phone root it with CWM and root copy clockwork folder back then try restore nandroid backup .#

I currently have Baseband XXKI1, Kernel XWKI4, Build XWKI4. That is the firmware with which I made the backup. (I guess that's KI4?)
But the firmware I originally rooted with CWM was PDA: KF3, PHONE: KE7, CSC: KD1 (XEU). (I guess that was KF3?)
What's the aim of this here and what's the source of the info?

I followed all the steps correctly. All went fine until the red android came up on my phone. Then after all the process was completed, odin also showed done! But, my phone did not bootup. It is looping in the Samsung logo bootup screen.
I tried all possible methods to turn on the phone, but it still stays in the boot screen itself.
Also my phone is not going to recovery mode when i press <VolUp>+<Home>+<Power button> so that i can wipe cache data, instead it just displays the android recovery logo for a second and reboots again and loops in Samsung logo screen.
I have very valuable data stored in the phone which is not backed up!!
This phone is my daily driver, so I would require some urgent help regarding this...
Please, give me a solution to make my phone work normally as before and also help to root it if possible without any hassle!!

Couple of things you could try (1) flash a stock rom with odin this should restore your phone but you will lose your data (2) flash a custom recovery with Odin either Cwm,PhilZ, or Twrp when finished flashing you can boot into recovery and wipe cache etc.

Then as you mentioned I also tried backing up from backup/restore option.
The cache is wiped properly.
When i tired backing up, i saw two or three lines of message log from CWM and then device just boots up and is stuck at Samsung logo boot screen itself again.
Any other solutions?

Looks like the root didn't take if I where you I would flash stock rom with Odin from Samfirmware (factory reset after flash) you will lose your data but you will have to put that down to experience.:fingers-crossed:

Why didn't the root work?? I thought the root worked as CWM requires root permission right?
Is there any other way to just bootup my device without having to flash a new ROM?? What is the reason for the root access to be denied? Can it never be rooted?
PS: Because I don't wanna lose any data. I had about 250-300 apps which I have been using and had saved a lot of info in them.

Yes you can boot to cwm again and wipe data cache etc but like I said all options now involve loosing your data.Plus this is not guaranteed to work depending on what whent wrong with your cf Auto -Root flash.That is why I suggested flashing back to stock with Odin this will return your phone to how it was before it was messed up (minus your data of course).

Sorry just saw your question about cwm requiring root..No Cwm or any custom recovery does not reqire root, recovery is a separate partition root is acquired through your rom. Technically you can flash a custom recovery and a custom rom without root because root is included in all custom roms.You need root to access system files that is why cwm failed to backup your data because it needs access to your system which it cannot have without root.Stock roms don't have root built in that is why you need to root them to access system files unlike custom roms which like I said have root built in to them

Yes ext sd will be fine this is where you will need to put your custom Rom anyway to flash it.Please read all the guides in the stickies before you start to make sure you know what you are doing.Also read the stickies about backing up your efs (VERY IMPORTANT) because if you don't back it up then you may have major problems later if you run into problems.

Anyways, I'll wait a few more days and try to figure out a way to restore my existing stock rom to work.
If not there is no other choice left but to flash a new one...
Is there any way to root my phone again and try backing up the data?? Will it work?
Or is there any working recovery software so that i can create an image of the memory?

Unfortunately, my stock S2 is stuck in a bootloop and I would like to retrieve as much of the data (photos, recorded audio and contacts) as possible - no, it wasn't backed up well enough...I have learnt this the hard way
Reading through the forums I have a couple of options but not sure if they'll work as expected...
1. I can access the factory reset: Will it only wipe the system data??
2. Can I flash the siyah kernel (as described elsewhere) via ODIN without any phone auto-formatting/reset? If so, will all the data still be there upon restart assuming this corrects the bootloop? Is that a correct assumption?
My thinking is I can try option 2 first, and then fall back to option 1.
Any confirmation and support from your experience will be greatly appreciated! I really hope I can rescue my data!!!

Hi @Snato,
If you use the factory reset option, this will wipe all user data. You don't want to do that.
Flashing a custom kernel like siyah (or philz) will not touch your data. If you can flash one of these and replace the stock recovery with a custom one, then you should be able to mount the internal memory and retrieve your data from there. The only doubt I have is why is it bootlooping? You may run into unexpected problems if there is a hardware issue, but try that first.....

At step 3), once in TWRP, you can use TWRP recovery to connect to PC before reformating.
Go to Mount -> Mount the partitions you want and Mount USb storage.
Keep in touch. Don't go beyond step 3 without having stored your data !

I have a 2 year old Samsung GT-S5282 i just rooted a month ago, by installing CWM 6.0.3.7 and flashing SuperSU 2.07 in it.
I've installed a few root apps that "boosts" the phone's performance.
But a month later i tried rebooting the phone, it passes the boot logo, then it comes across a dialog saying "process system is not responding, do you want to close it?"
I pressed "wait", but then the system crashes and the screen turns off. I tried consecutive battery pulls, wiping cache partition, but no luck, it still crashes on the dialogue screen.
I reckon it's on the kernel, but i'm STILL not sure what is going on.
Can anybody suggest a fix? I really need this phone and i don't want to lose any data.
(I've backed up my personal files, i meant i don't want to lose any internal data that cannot be backed up)

I guess you are able to reach recovery mode. If yes, then u should connect it with computer. Try installing a custom rom (i would suggest CM11).

Um thank you so much for the suggestion.
But unfortunately when i try to boot to recovery, the stock recovery opens up, not the CWM i flashed.
I tried to flash a fix for it, but it also didn't work.
But i guess flashing a new ROM will be the last option i have, so....do flashing one delete all my data? And if so, can i restore all internal data if ever i'll back it up? Thank you SO much for replying.

Well, then try three button combo (volume-down + home + power) to boot into bootloader and flash TWRP with odin.
No, your files in internal and external storage are not deleted when you format dalvik,cache,system and data partitions.
Edit: volume-down + home + power (boot to bootloader)
volume-up + home + power (boot to recovery)

By the way what version of TWRP would work great? (I have XXANF4 stock kernel btw, i still can't access the main screen of the phone after booting up)
And if i wipe system and data partitions will it delete the settings i have on the phone (ex. WiFi connection history, Bluetooth transfer history etc.)?

Dang it.

I still can't access the phone. It just boots up, shows the lockscreen, then crashes and automatically reboots, then gets stuck in a bootloop.
I wanted to install a custom rom like you said but i cannot copy the rom files to the sdcard (the phone's still inaccessible).

Also, when i try to flash the TWRP 3.0.2 you sent, Odin gives me an error that the md5 is invalid.
I still don't know what the hell is going on.

Also, the reboot problem existed since i installed root apps, the system crash existed since i installed a custom launcher. (Nova to be exact). I don't know if that has connection to problem.
Can anybody help?
I can't just format this phone i have internal data and settings that i cannot delete.

Do a factory reset
Go to advance and format system and data
Then flash Stock Deodex Prerooted rom by akshay
Done
It won't delete anything
Flash cwm for star via odin
Then flash twrp via cwm
Remove ur SD card and using a card reader copy ROM file into SD card.
Mount ur SD card
Then flash the rom

I mean, it deletes all the settings right? Like WiFi hotspots and bluetooth transfer history and every app i have on my phone. I just can't wrap my head around the idea that i will delete all of that just because my phone crashes on passing through the boot screen. . .

U couldn't mention what tweaks did u installed to boost the phone and what exactly happened.
So,all I can say is 'do a factory reset'..
Just flash official firmware. The problem was automatically fixed without wiping data.

So i can just normally flash the stock firmware through Odin and Download mode and not wipe data? Is that correct?
