For a while now I've been having problems with my GS2 and I suspect it's faulty, but I thought someone smarter than I might be able to help. The problem is that it always thinks it's charging, or certainly that it's always connected to a computer. The battery icon in the status bar always shows charging. I've tried at least 5 different roms, including GB, ICS, and JB. They all have the same issue. That leads me to suspect it's HW based.
The main issue is that because it thinks it's connected the battery depletes at an incredible rate. It never enters deep sleep! I've tried multiple Kernels across multiple ROM's and not had much luck. Overnight, without using the phone, it goes from 90% to 10% (this is on RR 3.0.2).
If it is a HW issue, are there any remedies beyond sending it to Samsung? I'm not even sure it's still in warranty.
Thanks in advance.

It shold be HW problem. Have you tried with another battery? If you are in guarante time, you should reflash the stock rom, reset rom counter and back to the dealer
I had the same problem, i tried everithing, roms, kernels, fixing permisions etc.. it can be only fixed by changing the charging slot, i gave my phone to the warranty service and they have done it, it was short sircuit in the charging slot that forced the phone to show that it it charging they said that it is a frequent problem with SGS2 phones. I hope it helped

That's a big help! Thanks. It's good to know I'm not the only one with this issue. A short circuit in the charging slot sounds like it could be the exact problem I'm having. Now I have to find a service centre in London that isn't going to charge me a small fortune to fix it (or I need to find out if I'm in warranty somehow).
Happy to help Youre in warranty till you dont have a yellow triangle and fully stock sammy rom and kernel

One of the atrix's I have seems to have a recurring problem, where periodically, it's found to be off - and will not turn or respond in any way unless the battery is pulled and replaced. Then it turns on just fine.
Anyone have any idea what the likely cause of this is? Is it likely to be a software or hardware issue?
It's unlocked and rooted, running 2.3.4 fruitcake.
Any help is appreciated!
I am having the exact same problem. Sometimes the back of the phone is hot when it happens, but not everytime. Trying to decide if I should return the phone amd get a replacement. It is only a few weeks old. Anyone have any ideas.

Either it's a defective phone, a defective battery, or an app is pulling all the juice. I find the majority of the time this happens, once I get the phone up, the battery level is very low. Is this the case with you as well?
Also, if you have two Atrix's, you can try swapping the battery and seeing if the problem stays with the same phone or not.
What it sounds like to me is an issue called "kernel panic" that captivate users experienced. Most referee to it as charge death or sleep death. The phone kind of goes into this sleep mode and the CPU slows way down. The OS tries to up the clock speed to wake itself back up. With the captivate, I had a burning electronics smell under the cover. You said you had a custom rom...... are there any "known" issues that might cause it? Have you tried using setcpu to make sure the minimum clock speed isn't the problem? I know I don't have an atrix, but I should be getting one soon. I have the Infuse 4g right now.

I find that fascinating. This is the first I've heard of anything like it. And the only thing being run is a Fruitcake build - as close to stock as you can get for a ROM. But I've got the same fruitcake build on other Atrix's that don't have any problems, so I think we can probably rule that out.
Is there any way to diagnose whether this is what's happening without making any changes? Or is that the only way?
Also, is this problem known to have its roots in hardware or software?
Some have issues in hardware others arose from botched roms. Shouldn't really say botched, but not installed right. I know with the other phones I have had, they recomend that you wipe, install, factory wipe, then reboot. All in cwr. Like dalvik, and such. Have you swapped the batteries yet? Or maybe, make sure you get the battery to an actual 100%. Charge to full, turn off, plug in, charge again to full. Reboot to recovery and wipe battery stats. If all else fails, call at&t and tell them your battery is failing. They should send you another.

I don't have many apps on the phone and this started happening almost immediately after I got the phone; before I had any apps loaded. Thus it sounds like it might be the phone or the battery. I don't have another phone to check the battery out. Might have to take the phone back and see if they will give me a new phone or battery.

I'll see if I can get another battery and see if the problem continues to occur. Thanks!
**Please note, i have already searched this forum and found some similar threads as: charging paused, voltage too high, SGS2 charged all the time, Charging suspended. Voltage too high and Phone keeps charging after plugin off the charger but none of them had exactly my problems so i'll try to describe mine better here.**
Some background and possible cause first
I have been using Omega ROM @ 2.3.5 (yes it's old, but it doesn't matter) for more than 6 months now and i haven't had any problems with it, but a few weeks ago i decided to upgrade to ICS so i did a full backup with CWM and also backed up sdcard to pc. Did a full wipe, formatted sdcard and installed the AOKP ICS, hated the camera app, wiped everything again, installed normal ICS, it was looking ok but i needed my usual apps the second day so i decided to go back to my 2.3.5, restored backup, restored sdcard. I don't remember exactly if i had the phone plugged in before installing ICS or after going back to 2.3.5 but when i disconnected it, it showed that it was still connected and charging...
Please note that everything was ok before updating to ICS (which is one reason why i believe it's software related), i used the original mains charger / micro usb cables at home and i also used a cheap car charger but long before this started happening, and the last time i used the car charger was 2+ moths ago.
The thing is, i don't care if it things it's charging all the time, my problem is that when charging it keeps the cpu active, and even when setting it to 100 MHz the battery only lasts about 5-10 hours with low-moderate usage (see the screenshots of cpu spy, it is clear that the phone does not enter deep sleep while it "thinks" it's charging).
Symptoms
At first, it kept showing it was charging all the time, sometimes when reaching ~10% it went back to normal (YES, normal aka reporting as no plugged in and no charging (=discharging), so i don't think there's any short-circuit/something wrong with the usb connector (which i tried to clean up, as suggested, but the problem is still there) :
---
---
Then (and currently) after 1-2 mins of disconnecting charger/usb cable it stops the charging animation but *#*#4636#*#* and some battery app stats show that it's still plugged in but discharging (also it reports over-voltage, which is weird because when it is still charging it shows health:Good).
Also, if it goes back to normal (aka not charging and not plugged) and i connect the mains charger then disconnect and connect usb cable it will still see/think that the mains charger is still connected and i can't connect the mass storage to pc (the dialog never shows, because it still thinks it's connected to mains) and vice-versa, but the battery is charged no matter where it thinks it's connected.
Now the weird part, and the reason why i don't think it's hardware (aka usb pin short circuit or anything else stated in the other threads) if i remove the battery for long enough (something around 10-12 hours) over night, in the morning the phone would be completely normal (i was able to do this 2 times so far and both times the phone clock&date were resetted which makes me think the "connected" state is stored somewhere in a temporary memory powered by a small battery which keeps track of the time and alarms?; also if the time isn't resetted, the phone would still think it's connected (yes, even after removing the battery for some 8+ hours)), but the problem reappears if i connect charger/usb cable (something to note here, if i connect the cable and it's not plugged in, the problem doesn't start so this excludes micro usb connector problem).
---
And also, as in some other posts, while the phone is shut down it keeps showing the charging animation along with some warning high temperature? triangle:
Here is a screenshot of Battery monitor widget showing some weird voltage spikes, is it possible to reach 5V?
The wakelocks (from Better battery stats app):
Also, something that i've wondered if all S2s do, when i remove the battery and plug in the charger (of any kind) the phone shows a no battery image:
One other thing that might worth mentioning is that sometimes, just a few seconds after i lock the phone, the screen just lights up for a second then turns back off for a few times (2-5 times), but this might be just an app problem and it's not really currently bothering me.
Also i just noticed when posting the screenshots that the battery is always pretty hot, is 32 - 37*C too hot or is it ok?
Conclusion
Well, it's been 3 weeks since this problem has started because i updated to ICS and i still didn't fix it. My plan is to order an Usb jig from ebay, get everything back to stock and send it to warranty, but this will take some 2-3 weeks until i get the jig and another 2-3 until the guys fix/replace it so i'm posting here hoping for some suggestions from more experienced members or people that also had this problem, because i ran out of ideas to try here.
It's a very nicely thorough post, very detailed. I like it.
However, I believe your conclusion that it isn't a hardware issue with the port is a faulty one. I think 100% of the times I've seen issues like this it's an issue with the port that is resolved either by cleaning it, (which will likely only be a temporary solution) or replacing it. It's VERY likely they will do just that (replace the port) if you send it to service. If you can get it covered under warranty, do it. Otherwise the part will run you probably $15 or so, USD.
But the fact that the problem comes and goes away without physical actions and also the fact that everyone started getting this after upgrading to ICS makes me a bit suspicious...

And the fact that anyone who experiences issues like this, when they replace the part, it fixes all these issues?
if it comes and goes, I'd check the port for something when the issue is present. There's likely something lodged in there when it's happening, which gets dislodged when it's NOT happening.
People tend not to protect the port. It can get damaged over time. Also, ICS versions will seem more sensitive to it, because of additional programming and error messages specific to charging and voltage errors added in.

Or ICS screws something up permanently or maybe you're right, and it really is the port, anyway i'll still experiment a while until my jig arrives, if i discover anything i'll update the thread.

I just wish everyone who had an issue that needed help was as thorough as you. Most often, posts in Q&A unfortunately look like: "Halp! My fone broked! Whut happen?!?!"
So while some may scoff at the length of your post, they need to understand; when troubleshooting issues, more than enough information is ALWAYS better than not enough.
Don't worry you're not alone.I'm having this issue for about a week and I don't think that it is a hardware issue because my problem appeared when I was doing a restore from backup from custom rom to stock rom and the only thing that I did is that I pulled off the charger while my phone was doing the restore process. The second thing that I think it is not a hardware issue is that my phone is new I bought it two month ago and the USB jig is so clean, I compared to my brothers phone he has sgs2 too and he's USB jig is full of dust and cockroaches and mushrooms and stuff like that but its working perfect. I'm so sorry that I don't have the answer for you but I'm so mad about this problem that I needed to say something and by the way good luck and pm to me if u find the fix

Please take note.
This is not a hardware problem. This is a Firmware/Backup related problem
Had this exact problem on a friends SGS2 and it kept on happening after he did a restore from Titanium. Not that Titanium is broken BUT your backup stored on your SD has a CRC somewhere. What can I say ... It happens.
Just do a complete wipe and install the Rom you want. DO NOT RESTORE YOUR BACKUP !!!
Install everything again as per normal and set it up and you should be good. If this then still occurs then you can be sure its the hardware but this resolved it for him,

I think it's a bit presumptuous to say it's DEFINITELY not a hardware issue. I've seen a TON of posts where people replace the part for the USB port and the problem disappears.
Maybe for someone its is a hardware problem but my problem appeared during restore from buckup.

Did you discover the source of the problem? I am having the same issue with my sgs2 (only 6 months old). I have all the same symptoms - it tells me the USB is connected and the phone is charging, and I get the same alternating symbols when the phone is off (battery charging/temperature warning). I have done nothing out of the ordinary - no system alterations, all is as it was when I got it, other than apps etc I have downloaded. The port doesn't look that dirty, although having read your posts I am inclined to think that this may be the source of the issue? Any help would be appreciated!
solved
Same issue after upgrade, was searching for days ...
Factory restore, but didn't work.
Forced to stop all services, cleared all cache and cleared Ram and after restart everything back ok. Was not a hw issue.

I agree with this guy over here, just wanted to congratulate you for this post.
And yes...back ups can be a BH.
My brother bought a second hand SGS2 (I9100), and it has some weird glitch affecting the battery reading.
Even though the phone is fully charged, when the phone goes to standby mode (sleep), after a few minutes, or seconds, it suddenly "thinks" that the battery is not charged, so it turns itself off. When you turn it back on, is says we need to charge it, but after 15 to 30 seconds, it reads the battery properly, and goes back to the right battery %. If the phone doesn't go to standby, then the battery glitch doesn't affect, it doesn't say it is not charged, and it can be used with no problems for hours.
I've reset it to factory reset, but it hasn't solve the bug. We have tried also changing for another battery (I have one as well), but is not that, the battery is perfect (both of them). We changed the ROM a couple times, also changed the Kernel and root it, but the issue does not go away.
Can anybody tell me with the info provided if it is a hardware issue (hope not) or if it can be on the software? I've searched the forums but didn't find others with the same issue.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give us to figure it out.

After many troubleshooting, the problem was hardware related.

Dont wanna sound rude or anything, but s2 is still not a cheap phone (for most of people atleaset) , meaning,
when ur buying smartphone 2nd hand, the seller will have to agree on me turning on phone, playing with it for 20 mins, check everything and so on..
Display, RAM, everything, meet somewhere where is wireless so you can download android system tester off market etc etc
Because i am almost sure this is HW problem mate. I suggest you call him right away, and hope he still has the same number

Not rude at all! My brother review the phone, but didn't seem to have any issue at the beggining, started to fail like a week later.
We can return the phone at any time, is just that they don't have another one to give us right away, and most likely they'll take it for a review before we can get either a refund or another unit, so we wanted to explore all the options ourselves first.
I'm sure he'll be returning the phone soon as we pretty much ran out of options.

Thanks a lot Jokesy, you have been very helpful as I followed the thread and it is the exact same issue.
After a few days, the problem got even whorse as everytime is even harder to turn it on because it reads low battery. We can only turn it on, most of the time, through Recovery, as the key combination for Download Mode doesn't even respond. Sometimes doesn't respond at all. We just need to turn it on one more time to flash the stock ROM to return it.

Gents,
I am in need of some advices.
It started with me charging my SGS3 overnight, and my colleague called me in the morning. I did not wake up to the call, or any alarms since my phone seemed frozen when I finally woke up.
I noticed that the green LED indicating that its charging was on even when I plugged the cable out, so I pulled the battery, as it did not respond to any touch on the screen or buttons.
Since then I have not been able to start it up.
Battery was full, measured to 3,9V, and I've tried different solutions, to no avail.
I talked to my colleague, which informed me that he heard some weird noises when he called me, sounding like a corrupt data thingy.
I was running one of the first leaked JB candidate roms. (couldnt be bothered to flash new)
Could this be the possible EMMC chip?
Perhaps a 301kohm Jig could fire it up?
Would love any tips you guys might have for this.
Sadly it does seem like the sudden death issue that many users have been affected by.. one of the newer firmwares hopefully patched the problem but as you were on the leaked JB it means that your phone wasn't protected.. you could try the jig but I believe the motherboard may now be dead. Good luck though, sorry I can't help much..

Hello friends. The problem is that, i9100 turns off by itself and immediately falls battery.
I can not find the answer, all threads readed and tried everything.
Tried all official ROMs and wipes. Bought new official samsung battery. Sim On/Egect - no difference. No FlashCard.
Thanks for helping!
Firstly, i can see that you are loosing signal. Put it on 2g mode
Now you need to find out the app which is causing the issue. Install wake lock detector and see what is keep your cpu engaged.
Also, i would advise to dekete the unwanted app data from the internal and external memory.
Report back

I've tried everything, i think it is power chip. Try to buy and re-solder it? Price $10. I will soldering for the first time, so I wanted to rule out other damage.
I Noticed that the phone is not turns off ever while charging. Sorry for the repeat, but how to diagnose hardware failure? Service center samsung do not take the phone for repair, they say that if not approved in this country, the repair will not even for money. If diagnose chip power failure, I can order it and rewire itself. Thanks.
