If you have a gsm phone, u can update via ota to get the latest hboot and firmware, unlock it via htcdev method if required, and then flash a custom rom for example Cool-ICS. It is okay to remain s-on even this way. It is not necessary to update ota as you can also get the zip files for the updates and install it according to a custom rom's requirement.
Cheers.

As someone has asked, are you GSM or CDMA?
You state you have not updated firmware, but are running infected rom, so I am guessing you are referring to having not updated the kernel.
Do you have a recovery like TWRP or EXT4 loaded?
If so are you comfortable with how to flash a rom from the recovery console?

Updating from custom 2.08.651.2

Hi, I'm running SenselessROM 2.9.5 based on 2.08.651.2. Yeah I know I'm 2 stock updates behind which is why I have a few questions before I update to a new ROM.
I have HBOOT 1.5 and unlocked using HTC's method. I was wondering if updating to a new ROM was as easy as flashing the .zip in recovery and the kernel img using Image Flash GUI.
Would it be better to flash a stock 2.17.651.5 ROM and then root/unlock/flash?
I think you also need to update your firmware and radio with a zip file from Freeza called his all in one (you can search for it in the dev forum)
I don't know much about 1.5 as I have 1.4 and we would put the file on the root of the sd card and then boot to bootloader and let it update. This would bring you up to date and then you could flash whatever you wanted.
Good Luck
I have some Hboot 1.50 notes in my signature that may help you.
If u flash the new update to get the radio, you have to use roms/kernels based off the update, you can't use ones from prior radio baseband, and you have to relock the bootloader first & flash the full oem Ruu.
Right now you can use 651.2 & 651.3 based roms/kernels but not 651.5 ones.

Ah okay, just to confirm so I don't waste my time... The only way to use 2.17.651.5 based ROMs and Kernels is to flash the latest RUU and then unlock using HTC's method?
Edit: Yup, found this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21363331&postcount=49
Thanks guys
But currently u can't downgrade the radio or use any roms/kernels from previous bases.
CleanRom Reborn 1.1 is very good.

Rooted with zedomax how to ota?

I am stock, locked, s-on, and rooted with zedomax one click so i could use wifi teather and titanium backup. How can I apply the ota and still keep root? If that's not possible what do you recommend?
Are u using a custom Rom? If you are then wait for one of the Rom developers to incorporate the latest ota.

Noob here don't know how. I thought I couldn't flash any Roms with zedomax one click root method and locked s on. Detailed instructions would be greatly appreciated.
Can someone be straight up with me and tell me why no one has answered my question?
no one will give you a straight answer because what you want to do is kinda not recommended on any device.
general rule of thumb is not to ota after root. so what you should do is get s-off using lazypanda which allows for flashing of custom roms and such and follow my guide that is in my signature to make sure that it goes smoothly (but ignore the part of flashing fresh rom, you can do it on stock with just root) then once you achieve s-off you can either stay stock and wait for a rooted version of the newest update for you to flash through twrp or you can flash any other rom (i run flex 360's rom, i find it the smoothest rom ive tried) and then just flash the radios from the newest update which will give you all of the 3g improvements (which is basically all you need, you can flash roms based off of the newest update at a later time)
if you need any further help feel free to pm me at any time and i will help you out
edit: also, after re-reading your original post, there is no way to keep root after ota so if you accept it you will have to wait for another root exploit which may take a while.
Can you give us new guys a step by step instructions for installing the new ota update> I have stock rom phone rooted with TWRP. Do we need to do a factory reset and clear the Cache, Dalvic Cache and System or can we just install the Odexed zip?
He can't flash a Rom guys, he can't get a custom recovery.
Op, get s-off first and the. Get your recovery and flash a romt

What's my next step?

Hey guys I rooted this phone almost a year ago and installed a custom rom. I remember the procedure being very different from other phones I have done and very complicated. At the moment I am still "S-on" and running Android Revolution HD 1.1.0 (android 2.3.4)
My goal is to install the newest version of Android Revolution ( looking for a very stable rom, so I'm open to suggestions)
The thread mentions extra steps if you are coming from a non-ics rom.
Also Im considering the Energy rom. (this one does not specify any extra complicated steps)
In the current state that I'm in should I run the all in one s-off tool? do I even need that for these roms? what recovery should I flash? (Im currently on a CW based recovery)
Thanks in advance for all the help.
you should first flash back to stock.... then update to ICS... after that you should once again unlock your bootloader and flash 4ext recovery this time.. but you id really suggest updating to ICS before trying to flash any ICS roms..., specially since your still "S-ON"

To my understanding, flashing back to stock requires the stock recovery and a stock image.
I found the stock image here http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/HTC_Amaze_4G/ROMs#Stock_ROMs
but can somebody help me find a stock recovery?

Relock bootloader. Flash RUU for your carrier in bootloader. There are plenty of threads, and 2 stickies describing this

If you really want to install stock ICS RUU, you'll have to downgrade your hboot first (only possible after S-OFF). Easier would be to install an ICS custom ROM and kernel without changing the bootloader.
Is there any tutorial for downgrading and s-off procedure?
Please give me a link if u know of any.
Take a look here... Shouldn't have been hard to find with search...

[Q] Update from stock 4.1.2 to custom 4.4.2 ROM and latest radio

I have been doing a lot of searching and reading for a while now and have been unable to find the answers to this..
I have an unlocked, rooted HTC One M7_UL (AT&T) with:
stock Android 4.1.2,
Sense 5.0,
TWRP 2.7.0.0,
S-ON,
software number 1.26.502.12,
radio 4A.14.3250.13,
baseband 4A.14.3250.13_10.331150.01L
HBOOT 1.44
I want to update it to the latest Android Revolution HD (71.1?) Android 4.4.2 and the latest radio.
Is "radio", "firmware", and "baseband" all the same thing? Seems like I see them used interchangeably..
What are the steps to get there? Do I just flash the ARHD ROM and then the radio?
Do I need S-OFF to flash the radio? Some places said yes, some said no.
Do I need to go to a stock 4.4.2 ROM first then to ARHD?
Also, I've seen "kernels" such as ElementalX and Bulletproof. But I think these can be flashed anytime, correct?
Thanks.

By "firmware" do you mean 4.1.2, 4.3, 4.4.3, etc.? Some places seem to call the "radio" the "firmware"...
So can I flash the "stock" that is on this page (android-revolution-hd.blogspot.com/p/android-revolution-hd-mirror-site-var.html) and then ARHD?
Is there a reason you can't flash straight to a custom ROM from stock?

Their is a no. of dependencies are full firmware flash upgrades like in htc - system, hboot, radio which are needed by the rom to work that is why I suggest full RUU/Firmware flash instead of just updating the required manually

Okay. thanks. I'm still S-ON. Do I need to get S-OFF using Revone to lock the bootloader? Then go back to S-ON and use the RUU to
get back full stock? Then update to stock 4.4.3?
