if i were to root my S2 will i still be able to get the upgrade when 4.0 is release?
If you root your phone and learn how to flash roms, you'll almost guaranteed be able to put ICS on it long before it's released for this phone.

but would the rooted ROM have the same features as the "stock upgrade"? because i know some of the customize rom have glitches in them most of the time
Yes it would work. To what level and how smoothly it works would be up to you for what you would be willing to try out.
While that may not seem like the answer you were looking for, let me put it this way. When I had the captivate and they finally updated it with official 2.2 (froyo) there were already great 2.3 (gingerbread) roms available that worked amazing.
And the same story with the updates from 2.1 to 2.2.
Sure if you don't modify your phone at all, over-the-air (ota) updates will for sure work. But you can revert your phone back to stock (from a custom rom) to be able to receive those updates, whenever they decide to release them, anytime you want.

I think yes. There is rooted stock rom with all ATT and Google stuff in it.
So you should be able to update with this rom.

I think you will have a better chance to get upgrade to ICS earlier.
Yeah, as said earlier, AT&T official updates often lag by one major version, best case. Look at the Captivate.
Froyo after I9000 got GB, GB still unavailable.
Just like the Captivate and the I9000, the I9100 is our "International brother" and stuff can be ported rapidly.
Depending on the state of Samsung's ICS kernel source release, it may take only a few days for a 95% functional ICS ROM to become available for I777. (Longer if they leave out the MAX8922 driver...)

I tired searching for this answer via search bar, but no avail
So I am a recent switcher; been using all iPhones up from the 3G and I made the plunge into buying the Galaxy S III and I %100 love it.
But there is many things I do not understand. First what is flashing the rom and the point of doing so
Roms are custom OS's. since android is an open source platform , devs are able to take the OS and put in their own bells and whistles to make it better. Or to delete the treasure Trove of bloatware put in by manufactures own custom OS's like htc's sense or our own touchwiz

I'm a new user like you! Came from a Blackberry and I'm just starting to realize the amount of things you can do on Android. Quite amazing really.
I'm no expert, but the idea I get is that custom ROMs are custom OS that give you features and options above and beyond what the stock S3 ROM offers. There are many developers working on their own ROMs, you can check out the developer section for that. :3 But before you even flash a custom ROM you'll have to root your phone.

Most ROMs have the option to remove bloatware I think. Even if they do not, once you have rooted your phone and installed Titanium Backup from the Playstore you should be able to remove any unwanted apps.
Omega ROM is a good ROM that keeps the touchwiz interface. It's one of the ROMs that is closest to stock interface. Try googling for that.

If you're a noob don't do anything to your phone, there is a good chance you will brick it.
Just read forums watch some YouTube videos about flashing roms and what not.
Only then once you know the terminology, consequences of a screw up and general feel for things should you attempt to mess with your phone.
There is nothing wrong with stock, if you coming from Iphone first learn your Android inside out.
Don't be one of those asking if they need root, If you don't know what root is or what it does, you don't need it.
Rant over.

Ghost77 said it best!!
If your a noob, don't try to do something to your phone, if you do not know what you are doing!!
With that said, Samsung phones (except Verizon S3) are the easiest phones to root and flash roms!! Do your homework and do major research before you attempt to do anything. Look at youtube videos and carefully pay attention to what they are doing.
Also because you have a S3, make sure you follow and download the right files and roms for your particular phone. For example, use i9300 roms only for international s3, i710 roms for sprint and so on. If you don't know your model number go to settings - about device - model number.
Finally, like ghost77 said, stock is not bad! Rooting and flashing roms is for those people who want that little more customization and performance improvements. For the average user, they probably won't even notice a difference between a rooted phone with a custom factory rom and a unrooted factory device.
Well I already rooted, I installed setcpu what would be a good speed to optimize battery life but keep good performance overall

Everyone thinks that rooting your phone will void your warranty but if you watch this it states that under the "Magnuson Moss Warranty Act" Title 50 Chap 50 Section 2304 C) Waiver of Standards, it basically states that they have to prove that you did something to damage your device to void your warranty. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YcIHaajda8&feature=g-user-u

I don't see why you would give the seller a bad rating, kies gave me tons of timeout errors, unzip errors, and errors in downloading yesterday. Samsung live chat rep told me it doesn't work right with a lot of computers.
And honestly its so much easier now that there are flashable zips in development forum i don't know why you would bother with kies, its worthless a few hours after the new firmware is out. If you want uclf6 just download flappjaxx rooted with fj tools

Kies is far from perfect. Contact Samsung live chat and all they will give you to troubleshoot your issue is "try on different computer"

I don't think the note will get ota ics update
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app
NO, it will not be getting OTA update. The ONLY way to update the note to ICS is via Kies (or rooting and voiding warantee).
Nothing is wrong with your device or computer. You have to remember that the servers that Kies connects to are being hammered right now, and you have to try & try again to make sure that you have a good connection. I had to try it 3 times before I got the update to ICS via Kies. It's NORMAL because everyone that received that text on the note are trying to update to the latest version.
So, be patient, sit back, have some cake, and just follow the directions I posted for updating via kies. Here's the link for those of you that don't know it, didn't find it, or didn't search for it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1731654
Now, update, enjoy ICS and have a nice day.
P.S. For the record, I have had no issues with this update, and it's performing wonderfully.
My i777 is coming in the mail tomorrow. I'm very excited, its my first Android. I've been researching custom firmware and stuff like that for about a month around the web. I just have no idea where to start. I believe my phone still has some form of 2.3 on it, but it could be the current 4.0.4 ICS.
From what I understand, I update the drivers on my computer with Kies, download Odin to root the device and then what? Or superoneclick? I'm interested in CM10 but I know the bugs are still being worked out. I need my camera, MMS, bluetooth, 3g data, at&t radios, mhl, Touchwiz toggles, all the functionality with no soft keys at the bottom. JB would be great if its possible. Other wise I might as well just update the phone to stock ICS and root it for other stuff I want like sixaxis and over/underclocking apps.
There is a reason we have stickies

There's things like KK 2.3.6, is that custom GB firmware? I know there is lots of information but no where to start.
pretty sure it would make more sense once you actually have the device in hand....seems pointless to create a new thread asking how to get started when you dont even have the device yet.
use it for at least a day or 2 before you start messing with custom ANYTHING
hell, dont even root it right away. just use it as is to get a feel for it, and verify there is nothing wrong with the hardware....if you just jump in and flash custom firmware, how will you ever know if an issue was hardware or firmware related?
Interesting, good point Pirateghost. I was wanting to put custom stuff on there while I had access to a computer this weekend. Might as well wait though. I'll have a laptop to mess with everything at my own pace by Black Friday anyway.
If it is still running GB, should I upgrade it to ICS, or would that hinder the root process when I want to do that?

The second part of your reply is absolutely spot on.
The first part i dont agree with a 100%.
I too plan to purchase the i777 model in the not too distant future, and its always a good thing to start reading early. Just like getting a feel of the stock rom/hardware is essential.. its always a good thing to read up well in advance. By the time a person is analyzing the h/w.. he is in a position to relate with other user's experiences.
I too was reading up all the stickies and really did got stuck up with the KK6 2.3.6 thing mentioned right at the start and no clue/legend being mentioned as to what it was. I googled a lot and many results had the same thing.. simply started using the terms w.o any hints.
It does gets confusing tbh you know
The thing is, I understand and know the stock hardware and firmware very well already. I have been using my girlfriend's GS2 from Sprint, the "Epic 4g Touch" since she got it in May. I've used it with GB and then ICS in August (I had to tell her to stop ignoring the notification, the update was a good thing!), but it will be good to evaluate the item to fully determine that everything is good with it.
It seems like in your first post, you steered yourself away from CM10, but everything you listed works except mhl I believe. And if you really want that, you will be able to dualboot into shostock once Siyah kernel gets updated.

Anyone willing to shed some light on this for me would be greatly appreciated.

Any rom you want as long as it is in the VZW Note 2 threads can be flashed ours arent locked down by what update we are on because our bootloader is unlocked where it isnt on Moto phones. AOSP roms require AOSP kernels as TW roms require TW kernels. The roms come with kernels though so that isnt something tk worry about unless you I want to.
The only thing to remember is if you go to a 4.2 rom and want t I go back to 4.1 you have to flash a downgrade zip so your SD card doesnt become corrupted. You can find the downgrade zip in the Official CM 10.1 thread in the OP.
Check out Droidstyles guide in Android Development, its a sticky, it explains quite a bit and would ne helpful to you I think.

When it got to the end and said finish to reboot it just turned off and wouldnt turn back on. Couldn't get to recovery or download mode. I had to pull the battery and then turn it on. It went straight to the new ROM though without a hitch. Is that a normal part of the flashing procedure on the N2? The battery pull I mean, or did I miss something?

CleanROM's good. It was the first ROM I flashed when I got my Note II too.
Eventually though, you may want to switch to something more feature-rich like Jelly Beans, which is what I'm rocking now. The features it adds are pretty awesome and you get full touchwiz functionality (S-Pen and the like) with the look of AOSP.
DL'ing Jelly Beans now. Gotta make a new TiBu before flashing though. Will give it a go shortly. My wife fusses at me sometimes cause on my old phone (Razr) and on this one I am always flashing different ROMs. She especially hates it when she calls and my phone goes directly to voicemail cause I am in recovery flashing a ROM or kernel.

Hi all, I'm feeling like a n00b on the Note too, and really appreciate the help all of you seem to be willing to share with each other. I'm not new to modding phones, recently I've been through an S3, DNA, RAZR HD and M, and even another Note 2. I made the mistake of swapping the Note 2 for an iPhone 5, and regretted it about thirty seconds later. Now that's my wife's phone, and due to the grace of another (local) xda member, I'm back rockin' the Note 2. This time around in looking forward to getting into some serious flashing and tweaking to get the most from the hardware. I've decided this is Verizon's best phone at the moment, with everything I need.
Don't worry, you're not alone in having a wife who gets annoyed at flashing and tweaking. Happens to me all the time, but I use the excuse it's one of the few hobbies that I have which doesn't involve the rest of the family and I need a bit of alone time. It kind of works as an excuse until the point where I need to use it again.
I'm looking forward to being part of this community and wanted to say hello.

I like jedi X rom...I got 3 days off my battery with just the right settings...my recommendation is to not mess with the per app dpi for the settings app because now I'm stuck without a settings app and about to switch roms...just about any rom will work as long as it's for your carrier... Best of luck!

Beans is the best! photosphere camera (page 1 of forum) works great with build 16! Check it out! Also, I agree about Jedi: definitely magic battery settings. Enjoy your new hobby! My wife is the same way.
