The Sony Tablet FAQ Thread
Why this thread, I am sick of repeating myself LOL
Why trust me?? I have been through a fair bit of crap with this tablet (Original Tablet S)....
Bricked after messing with build.prop (BIG NO NO) sent to Sony repair....
Well it was sort of repaired the second partition was not quite right. I could not update if I wanted to.
Tried to fix using Flasher but did not have enough room to deflate files = semi-brick
Managed to install 3.2 HoneyComb but the non rootable version so I am stuck.
First thing. HoneyComb 3.2 with kernel 10 maybe rootable by flashing updates. 3.2.1 (big difference) kernel 10 IS NOT ROOTABLE.
However ICS is now rootable, thanks to the 'adb restore' loophole in ICS.
JB is also rootable thanks to the motochopper exploit.
Both are compiled in All in One tools by condi
Next thing some HOUSEKEEPING
Install drivers here @ Sony
or On XDA here thanks to BluechipJ
and driver for R5a recovery thanks to andyabc THEN:
Options:
a. install Android SDK
b. download zip attached to this post
Best thing to do is create a folder on main drive such as C:/ADB
Next we want to 'link' the adb.exe file so it can be opened without having to be in that folder.
Goto My Computer > Properties > Enviroment Variables > Select Path then edit > Scroll to the end of textbox and add ;C:\ADB
Note the entries are seperated by ;
Now you can open cmd: Windows Key + R, type cmd then enter. Or windows key, type cmd, then enter.
Lots of ways to do that.
Then type 'adb devices' without ' ' it should come up with a device listed
When you have that working shut down tablet. Hold vol+ and turn on tab (still holding vol+) this should boot into recovery.
Once again 'adb devices' and now it should say blahblahblah recovery
If that went well then adb is set up and you won't any problems rooting
FAQ
Q. Can I install a cutom rom?
A. NO! You can not, there is no such development for Sony and Xperia Tablet S'. If you want development try Sony Tablet Z.
Q. But, why not?
A. Bootloader is locked down tight and because both Sony and Xperia Tablet S are developed by Sony VAIO not Sony Mobile. The VAIO team knows nothing about Android compared to Mobile team.
Q. I am a noob, how do I install (flash) these update zips that everyone is talking about?
A. Good question, firstly go to here for current files or here for my 4Shared older zips.
Then copy file(s) to sd card, turn off tab, insert SD card, hold VOL UP and turn tablet on by pressing POWER button
but keep holding VOL UP until recovery menu, then use UP and DOWN keys to navigate and POWER button to select.
Recovery Menu > Update System From SD Card > signed-...............
Q. Arrrgh I think I am bricked!
A. Ok firstly calm down and DO NOT factory reset if you haven't already. Next try the step above (installing zip) twice in a row, any zip will do and then use the command adb pull /tmp/recovery.log
Once the file is pulled please rename it from .log to .txt and create a new thread and add attach the file to it and don't forget to tag me "@stifilz" so I see it.
Q. I unistalled an app and need a copy!
A. Don't be lazy.... First of all you should have an update.zip for your region. If not see question 1 for the links (or my signature).
Once you have the file use desklunvr.exe thanks to robin. You can simply drag the zip onto the .exe file and it will output a decrypted zip.
Next you will need to extract the zip using your favourite zip program (I use 7-zip from http://7-zip.org)
After this you will see a bunch of files. You can use ext2explore.exe to open system.img. (See attached) NB: Hidden.img is just that hidden, it CAN NOT be accessed.
In ext2explore you can open the img you want and then navigate the file you want and right click and select save.
Q. Can I root Jelly Bean in Xperia Tab?
A. Yes you can!!! See here.
Q. WAIT!!! Xperia S has JB... WTF.. Do we get JB for Sony Tab?
A. NO. It seems Sony is being dumb and not going to give us JB.
Q. How do I root ICS or JB? Easiest AIO Method
A. To do it the easy way follow this post here for the AIO tool.
Q. How do I root ICS? Manual Method
A. Try to use AIO first, it is the most effectve. To do it manually follow this post here for step by step instructions.
Q. How do I root ICS? Above is not working... Semi-Auto Method
A. Try to use AIO first, it is the most effectve. To do it semi-auto go here and download the latest zip. ( I used 13)
Q. I have a non US Tab S can I flash down to HC?
A. Kind of. Use region changer to change to US region. Download this. And then either
flash normally and then root tablet using HC method (see post #2).
Q. I have a new Xperia Tab S can I flash down to HC?
A. At this stage NO, HC was not released with this Tablet (that I know of) and there is no way to 'fake' as old Tablet atm (to go down to HC).
Q. I have a new Xperia Tab S can I change region?
A. At this stage NO, although it would not be hard to implement this into condi's AIO tool.
Q. I have 4.0.3R5 rooted and want to downgrade to something else
A. When you install R5 OTA or flash normal file the recovery is 'upgraded' you will not be able to use AIO to pre-root future updates nor flash them. You can still root using the ICS method (if it is still current for the update. You can however flash either ICS or ICS R1A by lowering your incremental and manually flashing through recovery. Or see below for condi's amazing solution.
Q. I want 4.0.3R5 rooted and don't want the stupid new recovery
A. See this post here.
-- Now with double flash (flashes both system0 & system1)
UPDATE: Now you can also use FLASHER
Q. My region is not US?
A. Then you may be out of luck. But check here to see if we have a 3.2.1 for your region:
Q. AIO still isn't working 100%?
A. Please dowload the attached file ADB v1.0.31, extract and replace the files in the "files" directory.
This has helped a user at post #4 with AIO. This is somewhat obsolete.
Well that was a short FAQ but will add more questions as I think of them, or they pop up.
Please feel free to ask any questions here and I will try answer and post to OP.
Thanks

OLD FAQ Outdated v2
Q. GRRRR I CAN’T ROOT MY TABLET
A. Not really a question so go to next.
Q. Why can’t I root my tablet?
A. That’s more like a question. There can be many reasons for this. Most likely you have R5A / R6A/B or Jelly bean.
Q. How can I root HC?
A. See post #2 or update to ICS and see below.
Q. Can I root ICS, R1a, R5? Or R4, R5, R6 in Xperia Tab
A. YES see below.
Q. Can I root ICS R6a/b in Xperia Tab?
A. NO you can not, however there is a work around to keep root upgrading from R6. See here.
Q. Can I root ICS R5a in Tablet S/P?
A. No you can not however if you have R1a or lower and have not flashed anything higher then see here.
-- Now with double flash (flashes both system0 & system1)
Q. I now have 3.2.1R2 and want to upgrade to ICS?
A. Don't not accept any Over The Air (OTA) updates as this WILL UNROOT your Tab. Instead go here and download the 4.0.3 or 4.0.3R1A / R2A
Then use AIO tool to pre-root and install; follow here.
OR You can use root method above to root ICS.
Q. I have 4.0.3 rooted and want to upgrade to 4.0.3R1A / R2A?
A. Same as above.
Q. I have 4.0.3R1A /R2A rooted and want to upgrade to 4.0.3R5?
A. Same as above except change to US region (only region with release 5 at the mo)
OLD FAQ Outdated v1
Q. GRRRR I CAN’T ROOT MY TABLET
A. Not really a question so go to next.
Q. Why can’t I root my tablet?
A. That’s more like a question. There can be many reasons for this. Most likely you have ICS 4.0.3 installed. Settings > About Tablet > Android Version
i.e. 4.0.3 (release 1a)
Q. But I don’t have ICS 4.0.3 Installed, I have HoneyComb!!!!
A. Ok, do you have 3.2 or 3.2.1. Settings > About Tablet > Android Version
i.e. 3.2.1R2
3.2 maybe able to ROOT see below.
Q. I have 3.2.1!
A. Do you have 0035 (R1) or 0042 (R2)?
What is the build number? Settings > About Tablet > Build Number
If you have 0035 3.2.1 then see “Q.My tablet is 3.2.1 build 0035” below.
Q. I have 3.2.1R2 (0042) and still can not root!
A. Ok what is you kernel build? Settings > About Tablet > Kernel Version
i.e. “2.6.39.4 [email protected] #1” is what we call kernel 5
Generally build 10 is not rootable, but in some cases neither is 9 or 8. You MUST wait until another root method is discovered.
Q. I don’t have 3.2.1, I have 3.2?
A. What is the build number? Settings > About Tablet > Build Number
You may be able to save you TAB yet, see below.
Q. My tablet is 3.2 build 11000.
A. If you are US region. Flip over tablet check model SGPT111US/S or SGPT112US/S or
Open a file explorer, navigate to /system/build.prop look for
“ro.sony.sku.base=nbx03_001” is US region.
NB Some users have been able to skip 0035 and flash 0042. If you are having trouble with 0042 then flash 0035 first : )
Then flash this: 3.2.1 build 0035
http://www.mediafire.com/?cti11ejoxpxx4cm
Then flash file in next question.
Q. My tablet is 3.2.1 build 0035 (R1)
A. If you are US region. Flip over tablet check model SGPT111US/S or SGPT112US/S or
Open a file explorer, navigate to /system/build.prop look for
“ro.sony.sku.base=nbx03_001” is US region.
Then flash this: 3.2.1 build 0042
http://www.4shared.com/zip/03dah__B/signed-nbx03_001-ota-0042001.html
OR
http://www.4shared.com/zip/8nuDXOQZ/signed-nbx03_001-ota-0042001.html
Q. But I am a noob, how do I flash these?
A. Good question, firstly copy file(s) to sd card, turn off tab, insert SD card, hold VOL UP and turn tablet on by pressing POWER button
but keep holding VOL UP until recovery menu, then use UP and DOWN keys to navigate and POWER button to select.
Recovery Menu > Update System From SD Card > signed-nbx03...............
Q. My region is not US?
A. Then you may be out of luck. But check here to see if we have a 3.2.1 for your region:

Thanks for the thread. I followed your instructions in the ALLinONE thread and that was helpful!
Two extra things I experienced when rooting my tablet:
1. I somehow skipped 0035 and directly updated from 11000 to 0042. No problem with that.
2. With 0042, I still had problem with ALLinONE (4.0, 4.1, whatever version) froze after launching adb [AiO froze after "daemon started successfully"]. No root process performed. It turned out that the adb files come with AiO seem to be outdated. I updated my SDK tools to rev 20 just this afternoon. The new adb.exe (under android-sdk\platform-tools\) is able to recognize the device when the adb.exe w/ AiO cannot. Copied adb.exe, AdbWinApi.dll, and AdbWinUsbApi.dll to \files\ solved the problem with a successful rooting.
Now challenging pre-rooted ICS! Fingers crossed....
[Updated] after 3 or 4 rounds of failed, now i'm officially on rooted ics!! The most confusing part for me was after signing the decrypted update file and flash custom_update_signed.zip.
Here's how it finally worked for me:
1) install busybox;
2) when in the recovery model: run install.zip [it wouldn't fail] -> run _hack_recovery.zip [this one failed!!] -> run the new install.zip [it was the old custom_updated_signed].
ps: i'm not allowed to post in the dev forum yet so can't add to the original AiO thread. @@

I read all of the posts (forumSony Tablet S how to root) but do not had any sucess to root my Sony P. I finally found out that it is not possible to root the device with ICS 4.0.3 ....
After I bought my Sony it was running 3.2.1, but I updated it to ICS 4.0.3 and then tried to root (found this forum to late). Can I downgrade the software? I would like to ask if there is a solution to root an ICS 4.0.3 (release 2)???

Thanx for information. I have to wait until some one will find a solution:crying:
This may seem a bit strange - I rooted my Nook Color to get the full Android system. What will I get if I root my Sony S? For example, will I get my Windows 7 machine to recognize my Sony S (and sd card) with a letter instead of just Sony S? I did look through many of the discussions and couldn't find the answer - if this is the wrong place, please let me know where to look.
Found answer in wikipedia!

Which version of Android do you have? If you have anything less than HC 3.2.1 (release2), you may be able to pre-root and update to ICS.

That is a shame. You cannot root Android version 3.2.1 (release2) with Kernel version 2.6.36.3 [email protected] #1. If you would have had Android version 3.2 with Kernel version 2.6.36.3 [email protected] #1, you could have updated to and rooted Android version 3.2.1 (release2) with Kernel version 2.6.36.3 [email protected] #1 and then pre-rooted and updated to Android version 4.0.3.

Correct. There is nothing you can do now. Your only hope is that someone will discover and post an exploit that can root the unrootable versions of Android or better yet, discover a way to unlock the tablet's bootloader.

Meaning that Chinese tab can be unrootable from kernel 8 and up. Unlike most regions where 10 is no good. If the AIO tool gives you the red screen then you will have to wait for another exploit like alot of us

(Sorry this is really a issue about Tablet P, but there isn't a forum just for P so I think I have to post it here. )
I just updated the release 2 on my tablet p, and found that the bottom screen is weird... it keeps flashing and the image quality is far worse than the top screen.
I want to reinstall the update / just go back to the system before update (downgrade)
It seems that there is an option for install update from sd card (official recovery), but i can't find the update file.
Can anyone help?
Thanks

Use AiO, root your tab, and apply "rescue-backdoor".
Reboot, and your tab will get notification about OTA update,
it should be the oldest available firmware for your region.
Download, install, done.

Yes, but please DON'T USE Region Changer function in AiO with P tablet!
For now it has got regions only for tablet S,
so it will be incorrect for your device, even you could brick it.
Its possible, but I don't have other regions data for P tablets.
If you would get the data from device region which you need,
then I could give you insctructions how to change it.

@condi
This is just my opinion, but I honestly do not think the risk are that high from installing the OTA for the Sony Tablet S to the P. The reason is because I believe they use basically the same update file, but the system hardware divides the features and functions by itself. This is just my theory and has not been tested! DO NOT BELIEVE ME OR SOMEONE ELSE... (especially condi)
Also, just in case would it be too much trouble if you could add the region data for the P tablets if I could provide the data for you?

I have just done what you suggested:
Use AiO, root your tab, and apply "rescue-backdoor".
Reboot, and your tab will get notification about OTA update,
it should be the oldest available firmware for your region.
Download, install, done.
And now I am trying to root it again, and i can't.
The screen turns RED, and saying it's unrootable.
What happened reinstalling the firmware wouldn't change the kernel does it? I rooted the tablet with the same version of firmware before...

The build 10 kernel issue doesn't affect the Sony Tablet P (unless it is the USA, maybe...?), as my kernel is build 10 and I have rerooted many times.

Build number: THMAS0022400
probably will need to get a refund from the seller then...

no, i did everything the same as last time i rooted it successfully.
but this time the root program screen turns fully red after the "daemon started..." and saying my device is not rootable, kernel version exploit vulnerability has been locked down, need to wait for devs to find another way.
i even deleted the extracted folders and extract them again; and deleted the drivers and reinstall them again.

But one question, is your screen better now? just curious...

wait a minute, you've downgraded successfully yes?
If yes, then now you should have android 3.2,
which in many cases was not rootable.
You can still go back to newest 3.2.1 firmware,
via another ota update notification, from current version.
And the same question like Mahaco asked,
is your screen now better?

no I didn't downgrade. I just did what you suggest - reinstall the newest update again. (apply "rescue-backdoor" on AIO)
so it was from 3.2.1 release 2 -> 3.2.1 release 2
and the screen stays the same. it's automatically unrooted after the reinstallation
Now I can't root the tablet again....
---------------------------
Just used Root Explorer to check the Build.prop file (read-only)
It's written "build6" in the file but in the setting it's "build5"... Also, in build.prop, the region is stated as "US", but my tablet is a UK version. (the model number printed on the tablet body)
maybe the rooting + apply "rescue-backdoor" permanently changed something? installing different region's firmware onto my tablet so that it cannot be rooted again?
push~~~
I was thinking.
When ICS is released here in New Zealand....
Would it be possible for someone to change their region to New Zealand (providing it is added to AIO region changer (Great work BTW Condi)) recieve the OTA update and decrypt and add Root etc to it....
Then share that file to me or anyone with NZ region tablet.. and i would be able to gain root from this????
If this is possible we could start a sort of pay-it-forward system. Where someone would do it for me and then I would do it for someone else etc etc.
Just thinking of ways to get around this kernel 10 bastard : ). That some of us are stuck with ATM.
Any ideas if this could work, have been trying to get my head around it all day .
Kernel 10 will resist
Without root, we can only flash official updates signed by Sony... And of course, we don't have Sony's private key to sign any customized / rooted update (well, it's private)
Condi has find a way to flash test-signed updates within his tool but we already need to have root in order to run it.
Our tablet's bootloader is locked, we don't actually know how to run it in fastboot mode so no ClockWorkMod recovery for us.
The only way now is to wait for a kernel exploit like GingerBreak, ZergRush or Mempodroid that will root our tablet or expect another device specific exploit (like Dan Rosenberg's for HoneyComb tablet S not in kernel #10).
So be patient, again and again...
Ok.... Is the root etc added to the tablet before/during the image flashing, or is it added to the zip file???
If it is added to the zip could we not use that zip on other consoles providing the were in the same region i.e nbx03_033 (NZ)?
We (Condi! ) can open an official zip update file and add root in it.
By doing this, we modify the archive's checksums and invalidate the original signature. We can't rebuild it because it needs secrets from Sony. So we sign the zip with a test key, I think taken from the Android Software Development Kit.
This modded zip can be only flashed to a rooted device because root is needed to disable Sony's signature check and temporary replace it by the test signature check in the Android update mechanism.
That's why we can't flash a modded update to our not rooted HoneyComb devices...

Ahhh gotcha, damn.
So we must find a so called "local root" in order to gain root from the inside :
- Linux kernel exploit, searched by many but very hard to find and immediatly patched (well, our banks have Linux on their backoffice servers too) ;
- Device specific exploit, searched by few but a little easier to find (they have some easy methods on Acer devices, for example) and patched only by the device's provider when he has time for that.
That's what the rooting thing looks like for kernel #10 / not pre-rooted ICS users...
I know that its a stupid idea, but some softwares like quick boot can get you into the bootloader. would that help for checking fastboot? I'm not an expert, just suggesting.
What I know about this :
- no buttons combination (power + volume up/down) to enter fastboot mode ;
- command "adb reboot bootloader" leads to a normal boot.
Some people here have once reported entering a kind of "download" mode by testing things on their tablet but neither know how nor how to go back in it.
Well... Even if someone finds a way, I guess that command "fastboot oem unlock" won't work so we won't be able to flash anything. But as I was saying in another post, Sony techs must have an easy way to flash bricked tablets... Maybe a low-level tool like Samsung's Odin.
Block file updated!
I've successfully update my LATAM device, Claro BR RAZR XT910 to ICS 4.0.4 - 67.2.120 (China Retail).
UPDATE: Tested and working on USA GSM
Everything is working, including hardware acceleration (thanks to update 3.0.8 kernel)
New webtop version. Radio is better than 2.3.6/2.3.5 in Brazil. No FCs since installation! (3 days ago)
The only downside: usb mass storage don't work.
Attention!! This was supposed to be permanent, no way to go back to 2.3.6 after updating to this kernel. UPDATE: I managed to downgrade back to t-mobile 2.3.6 via RSD without any issues. I just modified the XML to prevent internal storage erasing. Important!
Original thread on http://www.grupoandroid.com/topic/44109-gsm-ics-404-china-retail/
I just modified some things to make sure it works on LATAM devices.
Instructions:
1. Make sure you are on 2.3.6 (flash by RSD Lite, no fake nandroid "flashing")
2. Uncompress mmcblk1p18-go.rar to SD card.
3. Root with Motofail
4. Make a backup copy with ADB (you need root permissions, send "su" command first)
(very important! will be used in the future to remove boot error or if you want to have a remote possibility of downgrade)
Code:
cat /dev/block/mmcblk1p18> /sdcard-ext/mmcblk1p18-back
5. Overwrite block 18 with ADB:
Code:
cat /sdcard-ext/mmcblk1p18-go> /dev/block/mmcblk1p18
If you got any error up here don't proceed, make sure last step was successful!
6. Make sure your battery is charged and flash China Retail 4.0.4, you need to unpack and find default_flash.xml inside p2b_spyder-umts_spyder-user-4.0.4-6.7.2_GC-120-175-release-keys folder. Use this XML for flashing with RSD lite.
7. Let it reboot and finish the process, after 5 to 10 minutes, reset and Press VolUp+VolDown+Power to enter boot menu. Now you must do the first boot with BP tools.
8. Navigate to BP tools with VolDown and press VolUp to enter. Wait for some time (I don't know how long yet).
8.1 Reboot and enter recovery. Let it finish upgrading recovery.
9. Wipe the device in recovery mode.
10. Go to the boot menu again and choose BP Tools option. It should boot up to ICS now (expect 4 to 8 minutes for the first boot)
11. Now you need root: This process will need many reboots, remember you will always need to reboot via BP Tools now (I will try to fix this!)
11.1: Download ICS4.0.4ROOT-FIXED
11.2: Activate USB debugging and execute "Step 1 - Flash 403.bat"
11.3: Execute "Step 2 - Root.bat" Follow instructions. Note: after the second step the device will boot up with a black screen (even using BP tools), don't worry it's "normal"! Wait for windows to detect a MTP USB Device and proceed...
11.4: After the last reboot, run "Step 3 - Recover.bat"
12. Install RazrICSBootstrap.apk with ADB ("adb install ....")
13. Flash latest GoogleApps http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip
13.2 Start (as always) with BP Tools
You're ready to go! It's highly recommended to remove all Chinese apps with TitaniumBackup before installing your stuff!
Instructions for flashing T-Mobile ICS coming soon...
14. Install OTA RootKeeper from Play Store
15. Open Voodoo OTA RootKeeper and click Protect root
16.. and next: T-mobile 2.3.6 (downgraded bootloader to 0.6), T-mobile OTA ICS installed and running smoothly (no sdcard mount yet), planning to perform the so called "impossible downgrade"
Good luck with RAZR!
Nice job

Hi, you tested some apps such as Multi Mount SD-Card? And, will be possible to update to official Latam ICS when it leaks? It has PT-BR language?
Thanks!!

Not for now. The only available languages are English and 2 variants of chinese. After all this is the China Retail version and their carriers are not so much "globalized"

Multi Mount SD-Card is saying device isn't compatible! I'll try with other apps later. And yes, it will be possible to update. Actually I'm going to test switching to the German ICS leak and/or american leak.

Technically yes, but i believe there is a way back.. I just didn't tried yet!
My test list for now:
1. ICS 4.0.4 Nandroid over China Retail, chances are we got SD card fixed, as the Chinese version was developed for a different Razr. Testing now! Again!
2. 672.152.43.en.EU leak, i've heard there are many languages available on this one Will never work... this one is for people coming from 2.3.6.
UPDATE! Both failed I'm not finished yet... will attempt later with build.prop modifications!

Thank you very much for your question about me
Just to confirm that downgrade is possible! Can't provide clear instructions yet, but I just installed SIGNED T-mobile 2.3.6 on my LATAM RAZR.
This is great news! Proving that our LatinAmerica devices are "free" now!

I did not tried yet, the kernel was using RSD Lite after changing the mmcblk1p18 file.
I've got some work to do now and no reason to downgrade from T-mobile ICS (everything is working like a charm) but i will test tomorrow!

So wait a second, if I use the mmcblk1p18 attached to the first post, I could flash en.eu and cn.eu ROMs via RSD Lite? Also, how did you get to the T-Mo ICS from T-Mo 2.3.6?

cat /sdcard-ext/mmcblk1p18-go> /dev/block/mmcblk1p18
this command overwrite the contents of the file... it must NOT have the -go in your filesystem

Hi Guys
I recently bought a Tablet Z and am currently running the latest official 10.4.b.0.109 firmware for Wifi models.
I am aware that there are guides for rooting the firmware version before this as well as upgrading a rooted device to the latest version but I can't seem to find a guide for rooting my current official firmware from scratch.
I'd like to be able to do this so I can run 'root-only' apps and be able to turn off the screen whilst using an MHL adapter.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

I did this a week ago, and what a carry on I had, I thought i bust my tablet
I downgraded to .370 version using official firmware with flashtool, then I rooted using DooMLoRD_Easy-Rooting-Toolkit_v17_perf-event-exploit (this is the easy part)
Then I used .109 version firmware (stripped ftf and flashable zip) - this is where it went wrong as I got into a boot loop
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2671276
I used both DE versions (German) for the flash/install - still works on UK tablet
I think there is a specific order to install busybox before or after dual recovery - this might be where it went wrong for me.
I also used an older version of dual recovery, (TabZ-lockeddualrecovery2.7.94-BETA.installer) and have yet to flash to the latest version
Sorry this is a bit muddled.
I just got my tab a couple days ago I guess I screwed up upgrading from 370 to 109. Following along closely to this thread
Sent from my SGP311 using Tapatalk
This is a guide that I wrote to enable root on Android version 4.3, build number 10.4.1.B.0.109 for SGP311. Follow at your own risk. I will not be responsible for damage to your Xperia Tablet Z! I am going by memory and XDA posts I have re-read.
Please read this first then follow the steps!!
1. Firstly you need to ensure you have the drivers installed for your tablet, so you could install Sony PC Companion http://www.sonymobile.com/gb/tools/pc-companion/
2. On your tablet make sure that Developer options is enabled (if not, press About tablet in the tablet settings menu several times), USB debugging is ticked and Verify apps over USB. Also turn on Unknown sources in Security settings
3. Assuming that the tablet is running version 10.4.1.B.0.109 you need to downgrade to version.370
4. Download and install Flashtool by @Androxyde http://www.flashtool.net/download.php - install this to your C: drive
5. Download the official .370 (I used SGP311_10.1.C.0.370 DE_Unbranded.ftf) firmware from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2402863 thanks to @DevMark. This file should be placed inside the firmwares folder of Flashtool and thanks to @ donedos for his initial suggestion
6. Download the rooting kit from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2333566. Thanks to @DooMLoRD
7. It is suggested that a backup is carried out on the tablet as this flash/root will wipe the data from it – I never did this, as I was quite happy to install apps/.apk again, and I had a lot of crap on my tablet anyway
8. Open up Flashtool, power off the tablet, and plug the usb cable into the tablet.
9. With the tablet still turned off press the volume down button, and plug the usb cable into your PC, this should get your tablet into flash mode
10. There is a lightning bolt symbol on top left corner of Flashtool, click this, and two options should pop up. I think you click the top one; if so, you will be prompted to locate the .ftf file, select the .370 file. If this file is not visible, you probably need to select the second option that popped up!
11. The tablet should be flashing now, and takes a few minutes or so. Instructions will appear in Flashtool to unplug and power on your device.
12. It will take a while for your tablet to turn back on; when it does you might need to carry out the actions again in 2. above. Just make sure you are running firmware .370 now instead of .109
13. Now connect you tablet again to USB, device drivers might install again. Open up/extract DooMLoRD_Easy-Rooting-Toolkit_v17 and click the runme_win.bat file and follow the instructions – your tablet should now be rooted. Check for the Super SU app in your app list, or if it’s not there install from Play Store.
14. Download the file Xperia Tablet Z (SGP311) 10.4.1.B.0.109 VMo De from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2671276, thanks goes to @bernddi . Extract the file so there are two files (SGP311_10.4.1.B.0.109_VMo De_stripped.ftf and SGP311_10.4.1.B.0.109_VMo De.zip)
15. Download and use this file http://www.winmd5.com/ to verify the md5 checksum matches the .109 files you downloaded.
16. If everything is okay, place the large zip file onto the root of your external memory card, and the .ftf file into the firmwares folder of Flashtool (later on don’t mix this file up with the .370 file)
17. Download the correct version of XZDualRecovery file for your tablet, – thanks to @[NUT]. I first tried the most recent version, but had problems with flash and root, so then I tried the older version TabZ-lockeddualrecovery2.7.86-BETA.installer. Files are linked from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2261606.
18. Download and Install BusyBox from the Playstore, and run the app, then install again to your Tablet (using default options I believe) – this install failed first time for me, if same happends with you try again until it works
19. Connect your .370 rooted tablet to your PC, and run the DualRecovery file by clicking on install.bat – this will install the recovery to your tablet
20. Your tablet should power back on, or you’ll need to turn it on yourself. Make sure stuff works fine, you might need to carry out No. 2 again, I’m not sure
21. You should also have a file called NDR Utils on your tablet, if not install from the PlayStore, and run this. The option to boot into Philz Touch Recovery should be visible, select this option and reboot. You can reboot by pressing power up, while the tablet is turning on, but I have problems getting this to work. NDR makes it much easier
This is where it might get risky. It appears that the older version of DualRecovery does not have the option to verify the md5 checksum, but if the file winmd5free said the numbers match you should be okay
22. In recovery you need to select Install Zip, then select install zip from storage/sdcard1, then go to the zip file, and press it. The flashing of version .109 should begin – it takes a while
23. After the flash you must power off the device, DO NOT reboot
I believe this is where I got into a boot loop, and I am not certain how I got out of it. This link might help http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2703882. Thanks to @Cat McGowan. When I finally got out of the boot loop, I started all over again from step No.8!
24. Open up Flashtool again, and flash the stripped ftf file like you did in No. 9 and No. 10
25. Follow the instructions to disconnect and power on your tablet, you should now have version .109 and still be rooted after the initial setting up of the tablet.
Please let this work!
If there is anyone reading this that spots an error or omission please post it
grat guide, Aid777, thanks.
I had already done exactly as you explain but I did not delete anything when I did the downgrade and I found everything working.
Now I'm still stuck with the firmware because I want to install the correct localization of the 109 version (I downloaded the ftf from Sony) and I'm trying to figure out how to do the zip and ftf whit this...
But i'v a question..what is the purpose of installing busybox?

actually it is already integrated in recovery package (/xbin/busybox), so there is no need to install it manually.

worked perfect for me... thank you very much

Use this tool: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=53448680
Depending your current firmware you may need to downgrade it to make it work. Latest directly rootable firmware is .314 if I can remember correctly. When achieved root install custom recovery and update to latest prerooted firmware for your device.

I share your pain man. There is no sticky on the "how to" root.
I can only provide a synopsys of the whole thing though. I hope its gonna b enough.
There are a few prequisite steps that need to be taken. There is no order on the following list.
1. Download the very latest flashtool
2. Make sure the adb drivers are installed so the device can communicate with the computer at the required level. I think that there is an option on the latest flashtool that will install necessery drivers.
3. Do not be upgraded to latest 4.4.4 version. If so, find a a 4.4.2 version for 511l512 and downgrade to said version.
Now try these steps on the following order:
1. Enable unknown sources from the Security tab within Settings.
2. In Settings enter About Tablet tab, scroll to the end and tap multiple times on the build number until you get a confirmation pop up that you are now a developer. Go back to Settings mainmenu, navigate once again to the bottom and enter Developer tab. Enable Usb Debugging.
4. Reconnect the tablet with the PC and you should get information about the tablet. Try pressing the Root button at the menu bar.
Thats all i can think on top of my head. I hope i helped.

I'm guessing unlocked bootloader is necessary to do this? I think you forgot to mention that in your post.
