I really appreciate the hard work everyone puts into these modifications. Still an android noob.
I have RC4 installed (and a few nightlies previously)
1) How do I delete write protected files in the system folder such as ringtones and alarms that came with CM7? I've tried different file managers but I only get errors. I have my own media, and the media choice lists are just too darn long.
2) The radio update posted in development, does that have to be flashed every time I wipe and install a new nightly? Or is it permanent? What if I wipe all of the phone's storage folders in clockwork?
3) Do new kernels, such as Ladios', have to be flashed over a "fresh" cm7 install or can be be added at anytime with no ill side effects?
Some minor things I've noticed
-Custom media put into a ringtone or alarm folder on the sd card tend to be repeated twice in media lists.
-The gps icon gets "stuck" in the notification bar even when off
Thanks!!

1) You have to be in recovery to remove things from /system/. Or you can remove them from the .zip before you flash the rom.
2) Its permanent. The only way to change/revert it is to flash another radio.
3) Can be flashed anytime.
Hi All!
I have a clean unrooted AT&T 1.8.3 Atrix 4G and want to ask a few questions before i am flashing, would be very grateful for the answers!
1) From non-visual standpoint, especially considering system performance and battery life, which one is better - Stock, GladiAtrix or GingerBlur? Is there any difference in battery life between those ROMs?
2) I see good features lists on GladiAtrix & GreyBlur's pages, this is from GladiAtrix:
Deodexed
Custom boot logo
AppWidgetPicker (better widget management)
Enables sideloading
Ad blocking
Installs AT&T tethering APN
Enables desktop flash content, i.e. Hulu (You MUST install flashplayer 10.2 from market prior to installing the ROM. You must also use a browser that lets you set your user agent to Desktop.)
Clears Dalvik-cache
Removes the AT&T bloat
Disables background media scanning (speeds phone up a LOT)
Webtop without need for dock (through micro-hdmi cable)
Preferred install location for apps
Disables SD card mount sound
Enables ADB to run as root (still need further testing on this, not sure exactly how this is supposed to function)
Enables Google location services (does not send private information or drain your battery, it just allows apps to use cell location as opposed to GPS if a location is needed)
Lowers delay when placing a call (1 second as opposed to 2.5 which was just obnoxiously long)
Increases wifi scan interval
Decreases screen activation delay from proximity sensor
Increase RAM available to dalvik VM
Adds lxterminal shortcut to webtop, allows webtop customization

But not on GingerBlur's page, does it means all this hacks is not included in GingerBlur? Or it's all there, but not listed on the first page (there is 500+ pages in the GingerBlur's thread, so reading it to the end it's a bit tedious task)
3) If i root, install CWM and backup my Stock 1.8.3 before flashing custom ROM, later i can restore from CWM without flashing SBF to get the next OTA update when available (hopefully 2.3 soon), that's correct?
4) How do i upgrade to the next version of GladiAtrix or GingerBlur when available? There is some simpler procedure to install new version over the older one (for example GingerBlur 3.5 over GingerBlur 3.1), or i should restore my stock ROM from CWM (or flash SBF) and then install the new version?
I have tried them all, and am at the moment finding GladiAtrix 3 to be the best for me, although battery life is a wee bit less than GingerBlur was. I am on 4.1.83 with GladiAtrix, using Cool Blue 2.1 for a theme, ADW EX Launcher with custom font pack.
<edit> The developers like Kenneth Penn (GingerBlur, GreyBlur) usually release flashable update files aswell as the full flashable ROM when they roll the revisions on them, so you just flash the smaller update file, and keep all your settings.
<edit 2> Full GingerBlur details are found here GingerBlur website. This is linked on the first page of the GingerBlur thread.
Thanks CaelanT! Any more opinions on battery life? How GingerBlur & GladiAtrix compares to Stock 1.8.3, it's better or worse?

In my humble opinion, both are better than stock on battery life, but GingerBlur is definitely the best of the three. (Stock, GingerBlur, and GladiAtrix).

This is spot on... there are countless post on here from people flashing themes and mods only to find out they don't like it and bug the dev/modders on how to uninstall what they just did to go back to stock.
#1 rule with any modding/theme changes, ALWAYS do a backup of your current/stock setup before applying a theme or mod...
Hi All,
as you may see, I'm new to XDA and even though I'm familiar with linux, I'm new to the whole Android thing. I successfully flashed VillainROM onto my SGA and noticed that I don't like the stock gingerbread launcher. So I tried to get any TouchWiz-Style launcher on my phone:
I tried the "TouchWiz Launcher for Gingerbread [V4]":
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1049501
I had to replace the "update-binary", but finally it doesn't match the screen size of the sga and moreover it always crashes when I'm trying to start any app.
I also tried the "Honeycomb" theme:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1104335
Some icons and the general menu style changed, but the launcher didn't change - could that be because I couldn't figure out how to install that "minimal.zip"-file?
I somewhere grabbed "TW4_for_Tab - 182dpi.zip" of which I thought it was made for the sga, but it failed to install.
Besides, I tried some other TouchWiz (4) mods of which I can't find the reference anymore. Some of them didn't install (the well-known "error in /tmp/sideload/package.zip") even with a replaced "update-binary", so that wasn't a success either.
I figured out how to mount the unmodified 2.3.3 Samsung-ROM and could access the TouchWiz30Launcher.apk - but I didn't try to move it to my system folder because it isn't de-odexed - is it a problem to put a non-de-odexed apk (and it's .odex) onto a generally de-odexed phone?
Now I'd like to know if there is any easily usable TouchWiz I could use. Some enhanced version of TouchWiz with additional features would be nice, but I think I would also be satisfied with the unmodded Samsung TouchWiz.
Thanks in advance!
I just loaded the newest wetdream rom, and when i dock in standard dock it shows it, but i cant select it, nothing happened where can i find this file, as it does this on 2 diffreent roms, these are blur based roms.
