SWH M440S VS i9300 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello so i got my S3 today, it's the 3G korean version SWH M440S.
Will rooting and those custom firmwares that was made for i9300 work?
Also, the phone came with a lot of random unneeded apps, how do i put on a fresh un modified FW from Samsung on my korean version?
Also, S Voice is in korean even when i set the language to English, how do i change it to english?
Thanks

Not sure about rooting and fw, for s-voice you have to enter the S-voice settings to change the language. Just hit menu when in Svoice.. you'll have to guess since it's in another language which to pick. lol.
Is that model you got the one with the quad and 2gb of ram? Are you using it in CA? if so what carrier and does it work fully? and last question.. where did you get it and how much? lol

The "SHW-M440S" is a Exynos 4 quad with 1gig of ram as far as I can tell.
I wouldnt flash anything meant for the i9300 (International version), take a look in this thread for more info on this device and other stuff

Well it's identical in terms of hardware to the i9300.
I want to get rid of all the things that this korean telecom company had preinstalled on the phone and have a clean phone.
Have anyone tried using any i9300 mods with the korean 3g S3

You get whatever firmware is for your phone as provided by the phone vendor . You do not get a base Android .

In the thread somebody linked above there are instructions on rooting the phone, there also is pre-rooted stock Rom and one custom Rom called prestige. Your best bet is to get rooted and use titanium to remove all the bloat ware. The few international Roms and mods I have tried have not worked but let me know if find one that does!

Is there a way to flash this thing to i9300?
The phone supports AWS but not in this "state" of fw.

If you find a way let me know. If I knew now what I know now I would have gone with a international version. But I was making the jump from an iPhone so didn't know that mine would be so incompatible. Oh well, still a sweet phone!

Head over to the Korean phone page here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1749214), root your phone, use titanium to freeze or uninstall all those unwanted apps!
On another note found this on Korean dev site. Seems this guy is running the Siyah kernel with CM10 on his M440s
Edit: He posted his Siyah kernel and via translation seems you could use CM9/10 with it. Gonna get the mrs to make sure google translate is correct before trying. You can easily sign up at that site to access the files.

Thanks, all done by following the instructions.

So, how do I proceed to debrand (remove sk telecom rom and get a stock debranded rom?
Ive only seen i9300 ones. Can I use i9300 stock rom on shw m440s as I use this phone in canada

As of right now you have two options that i know of. 1) root the phone and manually remove bloatware. 2) use a custom Rom (cm9/10/etc) with a custom kernel.
If you can't read Korean, can't figure out how to access sites for custom kernels PM me with email address and I'll email you the modified cm9/cm10/franco kernels I have found for our phone then you can test out which works best for you.

Hello I'm a Korean user
for custom ROMs, you have to flash a 'kernel converter' of a custom kernel for the shw-m440s after flashing the ROM for the firmware to work. sometimes, touchwiz based ROMs have problems with communication and photography but aosp based ROMs and CM based ROMs have worked perfectly so far. recovery you can flash the same one with the i9300 and have no problem. For rooting you have to have a visit to this thread

So I have a S3 and I am totally not sure if its the original I9300 or SHW M440S... I have flashed stock I9300 4.3 firmware and the result was a laggy firmware and my phone kept rebooting. I wasnt the first to own this phone, my uncle did and he said he just flashed the old i9300 4.3 firmware and the problem has occured which is a broken camera (cant connect to camera), not working speakers and headphone jack and mic...
Normally I would just get it fixed but.. Because of the broken cam, speakers and mic, my youtube or any online streaming videos does not load and mp3 musics dont play as the player apps force close when i press play...
Again, a broken hardware does not affect the software so I am not sure if it is really the hardware or I just flashed the wrong firmware on the wrong phone.
Has anyone ever tried to flash a I9300 4.3 official firmware on a S3 SHW M440S?
Did you get the same result as I did?
Do you recommend me to flash a SHW M440S firmware on my s3 just to check? Will it not brick my phone?
Please help me out..
Thanks and God Bless

You can't flash i9300 rom on a M440S without it being converted, or installing a kernel made for the m440s afterwards or using a kernel converter after the rom.

[Q] Bought an used phone and don´t know what root.

Hi guys I am kind of new to this forum and really like all the website with so much information !
I am turning to you because because my friend wanted to buy an SGS 2 and bought one from some random guy whom he has no contact with.
The problem is now that the phone seems to be rooted because there is an yellow triangle that follows in the start up. I wonder if anyone knows how to see what kind of room is installed on the phone? I ask this because because the phone has been unlocked with the simunlock app but
the network connection is so bad, I´ve managed to make 1-2 calls to see that the phone works but i get max 1/5 bars in the connection barometer.
This made me think that maybe the root is bad performed by the guy that did flash the device from the begining.
If you guys have any kind of tweaks or ideas what to do I would really appreciate it.
I gathered some information that might help. This is taken from t he status menu in the galaxy S2.
Would it maybe help to restore everything to stock?
Ver 4.0.4

Sorry I choose the wrong section for my thread. Thanks to the MOD that moved it to the right one.
Root has no impact on signal strength.
But if you want to revert to stock, just download original firmware from http://sammobile.com/firmware, unpack and flash via Odin in PDA.

The ROM you use has no effect on your signal strength. The modem however, does. So you can try flashing a new modem if you're fine with the ROM besides the signal problems. ie.the UI, features offered, etc. Else you can flash your stock firmware for your region and that would solve your problem

Go to settings-wireless-mobile networks and in network mode check gsm only...if its on wcdma thats probably why u have poor signal

Thanks a lot for the answers ! I´ve already tried to switch to gsm mode, dosn´t get any better. I will try to flash to a different modem but I have a few questions. Does it matter wich modem is current on my phone before i flash to another?
And if someone could point me in the right direction about wich modem I should use for my region, I live in sweden and use a swedish sim card and operator.

No.
For Sweden I think it will be I9100XXLQ6.
If you got the phone from a totally unknown person, i would suggest to revert it back to complete stock, and then start making all the changes you want from scratch, just to be 100% safe.
I agree i´ll flash everything back to stock and start from the begining, I think it´s the best way. But 19100XXLQ6 is the modem that my phone says I have, does that mean that I´am on stock baseband?`Otherwise if someone could show me a link or something for a step to step guide of how to restore everything back to stock.
Thanks a lot for your help guys !
Look backup your efs folder before you start pissi g about with stuff.
Then go to that link and get a 4.0.3 stock firmware for your region.
Then come back here and you can be advised about like siyah kernel/nand backups/roms.

[Q] "La'Fleur" ROM after emergency recovery with kies

Hello!
After flashing many custom ROMs and leaks my phone was acting a little funky, so I decided to go back to factory stock. I fired up kies on my pc and went to "Emergency recovery" It asked me for my serial number (I thought this was for getting the right stock firmware) After everything was done the phone booted up normally but I ended up with a "La'Fleur" boot logo
All I wanted was my stock firmware (Without having to look for the firmware, modem, etc myself) I though kies would do a better job than me :silly:
Sigh...
Any of you experienced this before?
Same problem here
Dont know how this happens...
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk
Kies gives you the firmware that matches your serial number. So, your phone originally has this firmware, or an earlier version of it, i.e. your phone was branded.
If you don't like it get the latest unbranded firmware for your region from sammobile.com and flash with odin.

Well it's suposed to work like that... but my phone is the plain gray international version. That's why it's so funny to me. I created this thread to see if some other people were having this issue as well and it seems so.
Anyway, it worked for me because it restored the stock modem and cleaned the whole nand. As soon as I saw that "La'Fleur" logo, I wiped it and threw CM 10.1 at it. Working great so far.
My point is, Samsung should do better (as usual, with everything) at keeping their records.
Well, none of us know what happend. Could be the carrier originally planned to carry this model, bought it from Samsung, and later changed their mind and sold it to a third party.
Nothing to show Samsung's records are wrong.

Well, I bought mine at a retail store, unlocked and without any carrier bloatware. Just to point out "La'Fleur" is a special edition of galaxy devices featuring a special 'floral' design paint coat, that Samsung released for valentines; with ROM customization to match the design. As with mine being the plain grey version and using the 'official' method to get the stock ROM, I think I'm pretty safe to say that there's something wrong going somewhere at Samsung.
This is exactly what I was trying to avoid downloading the firmware, modem, etc and flashing it myself, getting something different than the one that came when I first took it out of the box... And this is exactly what I got using Samsung's method. LOL
Kudos at Samsung! /s

[Q] Issue with Australian version of 4.1.2 [Noob question}

With the update to 4.1.2, it seems that the Australian version has the bottom icons locked. You can't change them. I've researched this and its only in Australia.... I was pretty pissed off with this, but I thought I could get used to it. Well, I can't.
So being the noob that I am, I thought simply rooting the device would allow me to solve this issue, but it doesn't seem to be that simple.
What I want to do with this phone is to unlock the bottom icons, and get rid of all carrier related stuff (boot animations, apps, etc.). Ideally I want to run pure android 4.1.2, as I'm not a fan of touchwiz, but I tried looking and I couldn't find anything, which is probably down to me being a noob. I wouldn't have a clue how to install it properly either.
So it's a Galaxy S2 I900T
The phone is on Telstra
It has been rooted
It's running stock 4.1.2
If there is anymore info you need to know in order to help me, just let me know and I'll add it.
Thanks in advance!
Well...... You could just run a custom launcher. Search for Nova launcher on the play store. It's the one I use, it's customisable to just about whatever you want.
If you're rooted and do actually want to run stock android instead of just changing the launcher, then look for the index of ROMs in the s2 section. I think GaboWinter is the OP. Look under the AOSP section in there for the stock android ones.
Quick tip, if you do flash a rom you'll have to flash an i9100"t" specific modem or your coverage will be dismal.
Ps. Is it really just the Australian version that can't change the dock icons. How rubbish.

if you want pure android, you'll probably be unable to find 4.1 since it's obsolete in aosp and I'd advise you to go with either 4.2 or even 4.3, as 4.2 especially is highly stable.
also, the guy above me is mistaken about modems, the stock i9100 modems work fine on the t variant, just depends on your carrier which ones you want to use.
to install a rom just flash a recovery image from odin (e.g. Dorimanx or PhilZ) and then copy the necessary zips to your sd, boot to recovery, and flash them
remember to back up your data first though

Just to clarify.... "the guy above you" owns an i9100 and maintains a friend's i9100T. If you mean the international i9100 modem is able to be flashed on an i9100T, I agree. I've done it. I know you also own "T" variant.
What happens in my case is that the data speeds are so dismal you'd be better off using an encyclopaedia than googling something (literally 2Kb/s in some areas. Flashing a "T" specific modem sees the speed jump to 250-300Kb/s or so in the same spot). I'm guessing by your post you have better success than that with i9100 modems on a "t" variant.

Whatever you try, don't flash the bootloaders from any other phone to your device, unless you absolutely know what you're doing.
Otherwise, you might just give it a shot. If you have a good recovery (e.g. TWRP) or something that you can use to get back to stock easily, then there's little risk. Keep in mind that you'll only want to flash the Kernel and the ROM, but you'll want to leave everything else alone (bootloaders and recovery for example).
If by "firmware from...", you mean the odin/kies firmware package, then these typically include the whole shebang. These will probably have bootloaders, recovery, and every partition included. I don't recommend using these unless you know how to dissect them and remove the bad parts.

Read my first response, only ROMS from the international S5 forum on XDA. DO NOT flash firmware for a different model from SamMobile.
I tried to flash the last firmware from G900F and got fail on ODIN. The thing is, if I use Mobile Odin I'll be able to flash only parts of the firmware. I mean, in order to change only the android, not anything else like bootloader or things that can brick the phone..., which options should I check on Mobile Odin? Kernel, Recovery, System, Cache, Modem, Modem #2, Hidden?
Thanks in advance
hi i have the same issue

Read my first response, only ROMS from the international S5 forum on XDA. DO NOT flash firmware for a different model from SamMobile.

If you look in the S5 (G900F) threads you will find many, many ROMs. Most of them will work on the G900T. You need to do a lot of reading about ROMs and how to install them. I like Omega ROM and use it on my G900T on AT&T's network.
It's all about research. You will need to read a lot so you understand what you can and cannot do with your device.

No problem, but to warn you, Omega is a touchwiz ROM. I'm sure that's part of the reason why it's so dependable. I started off with straight android but I've had a Samsung device since the S2 so I'm used to and enjoy touchwiz.
How about the opposite direction? G900T ROM to G900F?
So, I'm in Saudi Arabia and there's a opportunity to buy a G900F. I'm a Tmo customer and would like to flash a G900T rom so I can enable wifi calling. I actually use it quite extensively since I'm abroad.
Any chance that is possible without complications?
I think I saw another thread where someone did this, but had problems with the GPS.
Sorry for bumping this, I've been searching about this but didn't find the specific answer.
Can I install G900FXXU1CPD2 (which is for G900F) into a G900T, just using Odin? I have been reading and I've seen in many places that a lot of roms for the F version would work on the T version, as long as they're unbranded and have nothing specific on them. This one is supposed to be unbranded (Netherlands) without any kind of bloatware or apps from any mobile provider.
What do I need to do in order to flash it and make it work?
My G900T has the last Marshmallow version, and it's 100% T-Mobile stock, no root or anything.
Thank you in advance guys.

[Help] Come back to Stock... Freeze, lag,... problem...

Hello,
First, Sorry for my english.. I am native french speaker.
Here is my problem.
I put / test many roms and now, I want to go back to stock rom because I want to sell the phone.
So I follow many topics and I always have the same problem.
In fact, I had the same problem with Sammy roms.
After flash the stock rom (France version), i follow the android setup without configuring any account... all is ok.
But After that, When I come into the home screen, all is very slow, lag !!
It crashs or the system is hanging, rebooting,...
If I want to unlock the screen, it's impossible because it's freeze.
I follow many topics about SDS, ... but i'm not satisfied with those topics BECAUSE When I install the Paranoid Android Beta 3, ALL is perfect !!!
No freeze, no lag,....
My problem is I f I want to sell the phone, I must come back to stock ... so How Can I do this ?
I know that stock rom is very buggy but When I buy the phone, I don't have problem with the stock Rom.
I had recieved 4.3 from my provider Proximus (Belgium) and no problem.
I can't go back to this firmware because on Sam, the belgium rom available for download is the 4.0 version ..
Thank you.
Try find a 3 file package and reflash stock rom (don't worry about country yet) then if everything works fine, wipe data and cache in stock recovery and flash French version

Do you have a link to a 3 file Package ?
Because, I've downloaded 3 different rom and it's always with one file...

If you flash the MG4 modem (https://www.dropbox.com/s/geispctijpxqjms/Patched_Modem_I9300XXEMG4.zip) you shouldnt get any troubles but just in case make an EFS backup

Thank you foggy...
I've already downloaded that modem but I was not sure that I just have to flash that only file.
I will try when I have Time...
So... I've tried many differents things but it's always the same result.
If I put the belgian stock Rom (proximus), All is perfect BUT I'm in 4.0 version and there is no update available.
I've tried the Dutch, French, Luxembourg version (in 4.0 , 4.1 or 4.3) and the results are the same. It's very very slow, laggy,....
When I want to unlock the screen, it takes much time and after I received an error message like Process System doesn't respond'....
Even If I put the belgian one before and then, an other in 4.3.... all become very slow.
I don't understand where is the problem.
When I bought the phone, I've received an 4.3 update BUT What was the firmware version ???
The phone was bought in Mediamarkt in Belgium... maybe, it was not the belgian firmware ?!?
Unfortunately,I have the same bug. My phone flies with AOSP,but with stock ROMs,it's laggy, slow, and everything. Not that much, but still is. Also, going back to stock ROM made my camera laggy for ever. Not matter which ROM,my camera drops FPS when recording.
I hate this.

Its most probably u are using the MK6 firmware cos it is pretty buggy.(Forgot which firmware was it tat was buggy but I think it was MK6) Also, when the phone just get factory resetted, it is pretty normal for it to lag as it is installing all the apps etc.
Pretty normal... It seems very strange because When I've bought the phone, I didn't have those problems.
AND If I put the belgian firmware, I don't have any problem BUT I am in 4.0
As far I know, latest ROM for GT-I9300 XEF (French) is NA5, not MK6
This is the 2nd 4.3 Touchwiz Rom which is supposed to perform much better than the 1st r4.3 elease (MK6)
According to some report I read, NA5 implements TRIM much better and is (finally !) quick.
(sorry, I can't post URLS, I need to wait my 11th post (silly...))

MK6 was the best firmware ever for me. Battery and performance was amazing.
I tried NA5 later, and that was one of the most laggy stock ROMs I have ever tried.
I've already tried those last firmware and all are very slow and laggy...
I don't understand where is the problem.
I can see the problem directly after I've installed the firmware.
When I am in the setup wizard, If it's lag there.... so, there is a problem.
Setup wizard will be laggy in every rom, especially stock. Try having some patience.
Finish the setup and restart the phone, then use it for a few days before you decide it lags.

And do you have an explanation to the fact that when You Buy a new phone (the s3 here), there is NO lag, no problem....
The problem come when you want to come back to stock rom...

Most probably as when the phone is downloading ur old apps and restoring data etc when u do/finish the set up wizard, it lags as it has difficulties processing all those with just 1GB of ram.

Three options:
1 you are too fussy
2 you've done something wrong
3 your phone has a hardware fault
