Upgrading microSD from 16GB to 32GB - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

I decided to get a new larger microsd and it just came in.
Can I just mount this on one of my Linux boxes and copy everything over from the 16GB to 32GB one or is there something special which the Note does with it?
I have SD and USB adaptors so I can actually mount both devices at the same time.

I don't see why not

As long as the sd card is formatted standard fat32 it is good to go.
I think this belongs in QA...

Well... the 16GB card flaked out upon insertion into SD adaptor and then into Linux box (write lock switch in place). Didn't look any better in USB adaptor on Windows. Says unformatted even when back in the phone.
So everything is fubared.
Not sure what component to throw away either.
Knew I should have manually copied the files while the card was still operational in the machine...

The key to backups is redundancy. If it's important you need more than a single backup.

The card was operating fine in the machine but I had seen some issues recording video and DragonBox+ didn't want to update itself. But it wouldn't update itself on either SD or internal, so I thought it was something else. So I ordered another card.
I actually found this card in the park in an adaptor last year and was surprised it even worked. I went to the trouble to save off the previous person's data in the hope of being able to return it to it's owner, but couldn't fine any identifying name address information.
The photos and video should all be synced to Google+ - I'm more annoyed about having to go and remove all the apps and re-install because you can't just refresh the install over the missing files on the SD.

I was amazed today to find that the new microsd seems to have all the files on it (11GB worth of files)! A friend thinks that the backup feature restored all the data overnight.
Oddly, ES File Explorer seems to indicate that the card only has 16GB, though. So I'll have to do some more digging tonight...

[Q] 64GB Micro SD card

Will our Photon's support it? Specs say up to 32GB but in reality will it support the 64?
http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Mobil...WIA2/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1327976837&sr=8-3
Nope, read it somewhere that our photon isn't compatible.
Sent from my MB855 using xda premium
I read it will, but has to be formatted in the phone, and afterwards, it most likely won't retain its speed classification.
Sent from my MB855 using xda premium
If you use a micro SDXC you can use the 64
SDHC and SDXC are different formats. Even the ad states you need a SDXC Compatable reader to read it. I dont think most computers can even read it.
EDIT: Hold the phone, I may be wrong?

I must admit, when I first viewed this thread, I got a little hard on! But after spending several hours reading my link below...........Too many reasons to explain, but the bottom line is No, Photon cannot use this card.
If you need more than your internal phone memory and 32gb card than time to get a good cloud service. Or, try Zumocast. Streaming over Wifi is as good for me as if the file was on my device.

Sorry my man, your wrong (sort of) this time. SDHC is 32Fat, with a limitation of 32Gb. SDXC is ExFAT, Priopority to Microsoft (which is another issue). If you have an ExFAT compatable reader (Photon does not) you could likely format 32FAT on an ExFAT , but you would only have 32Gb fromated on a 64Gb Compatable card, which makes no sense. BTW: ExFAT can read, technically, up to 2Tb! Trust me, I dug into my link above DEEP attempting to justify the $157.00.
With that said, I would in IT. As with our servers, bigger is better to me. Photon has @ 8.9Gb usable on the phone, I also have Lexar 32Gb Class 10 card. Wanna know how much space Im using? (and I have a lot of s**t). I'm using .15 of internal storage, PERIOD!!! Card I have is blank!!!
Why? After I got ZumoCast down, why bother? I have 90Gb of music I can play with? God know's how many HD Videos on my desktop at home. The only downside with Videos, if you now around WiFi, your going to eat some data.
The only reason I still keep the space, I went to Vegas for my birthday in October. 1 minute of HD Video is 100MB roughly. On day 3 I dumped the card (granted, some of it I would never show anyone (and later deleted)) but the point is, I used some serious memory!

Tested and confirmed that this at least works with a 16gb uSD card. Would be interested in someone testing this on a 64gb. Here was my method:
Using gparted or any disk partitioning tool I created two fat32 partitions on the SD card, and then loaded the SD card in the photon (although i also assume that this will work on just about all android phones).
Connected the phone via adb
Code:
adb start-server
adb devices
adb shell
Looking around in /dev I found the second fat32 partition at /dev/mmcblk1p2 (this could possibly vary by device)
I then used root explorer to make the root directory read/write. You can also accomplish this using remount or whatever method works for you.
I created a mount point for the second partition via:
Code:
mkdir sdcard2
and then mounted the second partition by issuing:
Code:
mount -t vfat /dev/mmcblk1p2 /sdcard2
To ensure that everything worked I pushed two test files, one to sdcard, and one to sdcard2
Code:
adb push test1.txt /sdcard/test1.txt
adb push test2.txt /sdcard2/test2.txt
After the operation finished I returned the root directory to read only and then shut the phone down and pulled the sdcard and then mounted it via card reader on my pc, and sure enough both partitions showed up with their respective files.
It would be quite easy to add a startup script to mount the second partition upon booting the phone. It may also be possible to place the mount point inside the first partition on the sdcard so it would be accessible by the system upon boot with no other modifications. These are just my findings.
Thanks

alas...the Extreme Pro line stops at 16GB for the MicroSDXC line, (perhaps thats a hint at the difficulty of reliably making rad MicroSD cards?) and I'll be damned if I have an Android with less storage capacity than an iPhone.

That used to happen to me, got very frustrated because I could never copy things to my flash cards. Turns out the problem was my card reader. Try getting one of the USB ones that can actually read SDXC. I don't have one, so what I did is put it in the phone, then connect via USB to the computer in mass storage mode and it worked great.
I had the 64GB SDXC as well, it at first seemed to work, but don't be surprised if it stops working. Motorola, and I believe stock Android do not support SDXC yet. I have a somewhat detailed thread here: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/dr...d-cards-hd-maxx-hd-class-10-32gb-vs-64gb.html
When I got my card, popped it in, it formatted correctly, and seemed to work fine. As I started to put it through its paces it started to just not work. On ICS when you used the Storage option to transfer media to the SD card, it would stop halfway through and throw out errors. Eventually certain apps would stop writing/seeing the card like backup apps etc..
Be careful going forward, and test it hardcore. Transfer files back and forth, I always had issues with movie files. See if Root Explorer or other explorer apps can see it, see if Titanium Backup or My Backup Pro/SMS Backup can see and write to the card.
And yes, I did not get a dud, its works in other non-Android devices and works and tests perfectly in multiple computers. Just be cautious.

These are all the same symptoms I'm having. Well, it looks like Motorola actually had testing and reasoning behind "supports up to 32GB" :-| That'll teach us to think we're smarter than the factory QA guys...
Still though, it's a little disappointing.

Indeed, some of the Sammy devices support the SDXC 64GB card, but I think that's baked into TouchWiz. Hopefully as SDXC gets more popular it will become supported by Android all together. It would be nice to have at least half of my music library on my car so I don't have to stream all the time lol.
Confirmed working with a 64GB SDXC, works pretty well actually, now I'll never run out of space.
I bought 2 64GB micro SDXC cards. One for my Xoom and the other for my upcoming XT925. My Xoom was unable to format it so I used EaseUS Partition Master to format my 64GB cards as FAT32 partitions. So far so good...
I tried my sandisk SDXC 64Gb yesterday with no luck. It was formated to exFat though. I will try EaseUS tonight and try formatting it to Fat32.
Cheers

I bought a 64 sandisk sdxc class 10 and tried it in the phone. Didn't work. Formatted to fat32 with a partition program, still wouldn't work. Got fed up, deleted all the partitions, threw it in the phone and itr was recognized, but blank. Had the phone format it, and it works. Phenomenally actually. Haven't tested read/write, but I've filled it a few times over looking for problems and had none. Without looking I think I have just shy of 40 used on it right now.
You'd think Motorola would say something about that.
Got a 64gb sandisk class 10 and it's really buggy.
Forceclose/card disabled automaticly/cant see my files/Many lags.
So for me the xt925 is not compatible with it.
I've been using mine for about a year now, it's been working flawlessly. I had to format in my phone the initial time I first used it.

[Q] HELP! - S3 killed SanDisk 32gb Ultra Micro-SD

Hi guys
I know about the SanDisk Micro-SD card problem with Samsung Galaxy S3's and I happen to be one of the victims.
My SanDisk Micro-SD 32gb Ultra has had problems in the past. It sometimes says blank sd card but it eventually works again. At one point it said sd card damaged but the card still worked. Up until yesterday it hasn't stopped working for a while but now my phone says blank sd card. I tried putting it into a windows computer but it cannot be detected. When using a usb adapter it just shows a device in drive "?:" and can't do anything with it and when using a micro sd to sd card reader it doesn't show at all. In Mac the micro sd to sd card reader is detectable and shows the size of 32.1 MB and is called "Apple SDXC Reader Media". The micro sd card itself is not detectable it seems. I have tried many device recovery software but none of them work. They all seem to just be scanning the card reader and not the micro sd itself.
Does anyone know how I can recover the Micro-SD card?
It is quite important because I have my school laptop data backed up on it (which was just handed in for a system upgrade and being wiped) and also my phone pictures, videos and other stuff.
Any help will be greatly appreciated

It may be recoverable by a specialist company, But i believe the going rate is approx £900. My first step would be to try sticking it in the freezer for at least 8 hours (but as long as you can manage the longer the better) then try it in your phone, if this works back up all the data and RMA the card to SanDisk. Let this be a lesson to us all that all data on our cards should be backed up regularly, I understand you werent expecting the card to fail but had you lost your phone the result would have been the same.
I doubt you will be able to recovery the data, formatting the card with the sd formatting tool might make the card useable again but I doubt it. When I've had cards corrupt more than once it is best to throw them away and get a different make.
You can try looking for a specialist data recovery expert, locally or on the web - if the data is very valuable to you.

First of all I don't have £900 to throw around, besides the fact it totally isn't worth £900 to get it fixed.
Second, before I start chucking my SD card in the freezer what exactly does freezing it do and how will it help it? You sure it won't just destroy it for good? I can leave it in the freezer for as long as needed as I can't exactly use the card in the mean time.
Thanks for the reply though
Hope I can get it to work
Freezing is a method that may give a brief recovery on some hard disc failures .
Note hard disc never heard of freezing ram or why it could work .

Not a lot.Contact retailer, or SanDisk direct for a replacement card and chalk it down to experience.

Ok then I'll just have to get it replaced.
A thought just occurred to me though.
Before I had my school laptop backed up on my micro-sd card I had it backed up on a usb. Because it was only an 8gb usb I transfered it to my micro sd because it took up too much space. I've heard of software that can recover deleted files from devices. Would it be possible to recover the deleted backup on my usb? The backup in total would have been about 1 - 2gb. If so, what free program could I use to recover it?
Thanks in advance
Possibly. As an IT support engineer, I don't want to get your hopes up though.
Things like NTFS get back may work but most if them are not free.
I took Handy recovery 1 (free version) from a bootable cd tool once, you could try that and may recover a small amount of data but its always safest to assume it gone.
The more you use the usb device, the less chance you have of recovery

Think they would have something to fix the card or recover the data?
It depends on the state.
The media has a File System. This could be FAT32, NTFS, exFAT etc. Essentially (without going technical) imagine these file systems as a database table. When you add a file to the media, an entry is written to the table to identify the exact location of the file on the media. That way, when an operating system views the card and the user accesses a file, the table tells the OS where to look for the file.
Typically with these file systems, when you delete the file, the file remains. Only the Table entry is removed. The OS can no longer locate the file. the OS is shown the free space as per what the table says - not what is really the truth.
So once a file is deleted, 3rd party applications can scan the media and find the files (without using the table).
Of course there is a problem in that any space that the table shows as unallocated (you deleted the file), new files will overwrite the old files. That is when the data becomes unrecoverable.
So yes, it's possible that even if the formatted filesystem is damaged, the data on the media can be recovered. But if you added new files since, then the chances are the unreferenced data has been actually overwritten. In this case, it is gone.

What file system are you taking about here? The damaged file system (micro-sd card) can't have new files added to it as it is inaccessible. It also has not been formatted since the problem. The usb with the deleted files is not damaged and not formatted but I have put new files on it since. Sounds like you're combining the two different devices. Sorry if this is a bit confusing.

Anyway, so basically you're saying that it is possible for the IT guys at my school to fix the micro sd card and recover its data right? I don't think I'm going to bother trying to recover the deleted one on my usb.

The s3 doesn't play very well with sandisk cards in general (samsung confirmed this) . I personally use a pny and have no issues, I would suggest trying to return the card and get a different brand.

Sandisk 64GB MicroSD not detected by stock ROM.

I've got a brand new MicroSD, but when I insert it, the ROM never detects it. The storage menu says to insert a card, but I've tried many times to remove and reinsert it. I saw problems like this with the S3, but I've never experienced it. Common issue? Ways to troubleshoot?

There are youtube videos explaining how to install micro sd cards and how to make them work. Just type ( micro sd card in samsung ) its easy.
You probably just need to format the card before you put it in your phone. Connect it to a card reader to your computer, and check what format it is. Either FAT32 or exFAT are the ones to try.

Thanks, I'll give it a look. I'll be surprised if it was NTFS out of the box.

I thought 64gig cards come formatted as exFAT which don't work in the phones, and you have to reformat them as FAT32 in another device that supports it, then put it in the phone.

Pretty sure this is exactly what the problem is...
I got a SanDisk 64 GB card, put it in the phone and formatted, and it works fine.. *confused*

I couldn't remember which was which, I use exFAT in my Note 2 but I'm running a custom ROM. It's probably FAT32 though, and I know I couldn't format it on Windows 7 using Explorer as it only allowed me to format it as NTFS or exFAT.
I think I may just have a dead MicroSD. Not being detected by either of my laptops, so that would explain it.

There is an program you can download to format fat32 >32gb on win7. Think it's called guiformat or some such.

It supposedly works. I have a 64GB sammy card on the way.
Already used it on mine. Was waiting on the swap mod to drop for the S4 before I replaced the 32.

You have it backwards.
Stock Samsung kernels all support exFAT now. Unfortunately because of Microsoft and licensing issues the code for this isn't in the Open Source release. So if you ever go AOSP or custom TW kernel, you have to switch to some other format.
By the way, the Samsung 64gb cards are testing way faster than SanDisk. At about the same price, get the Samsung.
Should we expect the S4 to have the same problems with MicroSD card failures as the S3? From what I've read so far SanDisk claimed responsibility for the problem yet folks here were talking about exfat being the problem. Did the exfat compatibility issue get fixed in the S4?

exFAT is and has been rock solid since Samsung's 4.1.2 or so... and since the S4 is on 4.2.2 to start, it's fine.
SanDisk has still been having issues, though, and given that and the speed difference I'd suggest buying Samsung microSDs in the first place.

sd card

Formatted ext sd via recovery...now I can't install, add or even format. I tried on pc and with twrp again by even using repair and changing file system. Anyone know how I can format this card? It's a 64 gb SanDisk. I can't find any solid solutions online. Thanks.

I have no idea of your hardware, but 64gb is where the switch from SD-HC changed to SD-HC (technically 32 can be either, but generally 32 are HC) and older hardware that didn't explicitly support XC wouldn't work... It either doesn't see it at all or sometimes it will work until you get to 32gb, then you can't write any more data.. I have older SD readers that so both.
But any phone or reader for the last 3-5 yrs handle XC, which has a theoretical 2tb limit, SanDisk has a 400gb microSD.. Insane.
Anyway that's all moot if it used to work in your phone and reader, but just doesn't anymore. Mostly if they're pre-formatted is exFat. If you formatted in TWRP I think it probably defaults to ext4, but TWRP can do a variety of formats.
I got to say though, if you can't reformat it again and TWRP that doesn't sound promising. Perhaps there is an Android app that will let you format with more control than the default tool (I have no idea since the last phone I had with SD was a Droid running GB)
Sorry I didn't really offer a solution, I have had problems with micro SD cards in general with generic brands... But I generally format them in the device I'm using them with and then I have a small USB thumb drive size thing that the micro SD card goes completely inside of and windows generally mounts whatever format it might be, provided drivers are installed.
Also sorry this is so long-winded I tend to do that when I'm voice dictating...
If you have more info that might be helpful drop a line. It doesn't take much to bugger up a microSD card though. Could be as simple as damage (static or physical) when removing it from the phone and putting it in the computer. But the proximity of time when formatted to not working makes that unlikely.
And I'm rambling again.
Cheers.

Well the Windows machine won't read ext4 without third-party software... But I don't see why that would keep you from formatting again. And if TWRP does the same thing, errors out, then I got think the card's had it.
If you're trying to use it in the phone you should leave it in ext4, but if you're trying to use it and windows you could try to format it exFat in TWRP.

Nothing really.
I am curious though. Can you give me specs on the card brand/model/serial?
Also, I have had good results with UFS Explorer Recovery pulling data when nothing else will. I think there's a free trial, but you plobably have to pay for it to do anything other than verify it 'can' successfully recover, not sure, but if it is data that you need, it is good.
I only ask about the card because I found in the past I bought like three identical adata brand SD cards and one appeared to be DOA and I couldn't do anything with it and lo and behold adata had found a firmware thing that they could actually fix and they had a tool that did it.
If you want to go down a rabbit hole there is a sticky XDA thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1355528&page=2 with various degrees of helpfulness. Its a little dated, but the ideas are sound for most of it.
Really i just googled "sd card bad after formatting twrp" and lost 2 hrs...
Let me know if you have any success, I realize this is either about data or just personal curiosity like mine... Because a probably sub $20 card is not worth this kind of investment... And if its a high end part, probably has lifetime warranty..

Did you request RMA?
https://kb.sandisk.com
I'm not sure if they are lifetime warranty or not, i have a couple ultra plus cards from Costco that were lifetime warranty.
Now on the less ethical side, if it's a current model, plckup a new one then swap/return. But obviously thats evil.
