Hello Forum,
I have downloaded ODIN for flashing and recovery, and as of the moment I have the Samsung Galaxy 5 (USA) Model. Now, I have previously flashed and recovered stock with it but I don't know which files do what.
I have a PIT file, a BOOTLOADER, and a PDA file. Could someone give me a depth description of what each one does? I doubt I'm suppose to use all three all the time in case I've bricked my device or flashing.
Thanks in advance.
PIT stands for Partition Information Table. It basically tells odin how big each partition is, how their arranged, etc. It doesn't contain the actual contents of those partitions, just how they're laid out on the drive.
The PDA file is your actual system image, and is usually compressed as a .tar (or tar.md5) file. It will contain a kernel and one or more partition images which contain the actual contents of the partitions that're described in the .PIT file.
To flash with Odin (or Heimdall, for that matter) you need a .pit and one or more partition images. I'm not too sure how you'd use the separate bootloader file in Odin. I'm still something of a n00b at this.

You actually don't need a .pit file to flash with odin. All you need is the .PDA file. I believe the .pit file is only for if you want to re-partition the drive as well. Forgot to mention make sure only Auto Reboot and F.Reset Time are checked when flashing in odin with a .pda file or you will brick your device.
Thank you guys for that, I figured more or less what you are saying. I just needed confirmation! :good:
Using Odin to flash the TerraSilent Kernel
I would like to flash TerraSilent Kernel 1.3.5 for Galaxy 4.0 (YP-G1) USA. I have downloaded Odin3 v1.7, and would just like to confirm the steps, as this is the first and only Android device I have and wouldn't like to brick it. (This is the also my initial step to flashing the EtherealRom V2.4 ROM.)
I have the Samsung Drivers installed. That is all I need to use Odin right?
Steps:
Download the TerraSilent_usa-1.3.5.tar file
Put Galaxy Player in download mode (Power Button + down)
Connect the Galaxy Player to the computer
Start Odin
Ensure only Auto Reboot and F.Reset Time are checked.
Select PDA and choose the "TerraSilent_usa-1.3.5.tar" file that I previously downloaded
Then click start.
I have some other questions, I have been reading up the forums and would like to clarify something with the .pit file. Is it only required when you would need to to re-partition the drive? and therefore installing a kernel does NOT require a re-partition of the drive, am I correct?
Which of the following scenarios would REQUIRE a re-partition of the drive (and thus a .pit file when using Odin)?
- Flashing a Full STOCK ROM (with Recovery) for e.g here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1531850
- Flashing a Stock-based ROM such as EtherealRom V2.4 ROM
- Flashing a Recover such as CWM
I'm new to this Android ROM scene so I just trying to get a better understanding of this all.
Thanks in advance.

True all you need is the .tar file to flash. The pit file is usually unneeded when flashing a custom rom. However, make sure you turn on USB debugging first (Settings->Applications->Development-> Check USB debugging) before flashing anything. Sometimes just not having that checked gets you into bootloops and cause problems.
PIT files are used when you get your partition tables messed up. I believe this means you're not able to boot into the device or access download mode anymore (basically for Bricked devices). So you 90% (made up statistic =P but you get the point) of the time when you are flashing back to stock, you just need again the .tar file (unless as I said previous your device is bricked). You almost never need a PIT file to flash a custom rom from stock, and Flashing from CWM only requize a .zip file that's still in the zip form (meaning don't unzip it with winRAR, 7zip, and similiar programs

Hey guys so I am interested in flashing the simply honey revolution ROM on my samsung vibrant. But I am stuck. The instructions call for you to flash via Odin with the 512 PIT file. But when I download the light version for first flash in the instructions I find a .tar file. How do I flash this rom? Thanks for your help!
I have the same question, since I am used to work on the EVO 4G but not this phone. Any help will be appreciated. I already flashed a gingerbread bootloader, but I still need to flash this ROM.
Put the tar file in the pda and pit in the pit section.
just use that file but open PDA selection. it will flash it. also make sure you odin a gingerbread boot loader first.
Ok, understanding a little bit more. Right know I have the zip and the tar file inside that one. I don't have any Pit file mentioned. Also in the instrutions doesn't say if the phone needs to be in download mode or whatever mode. Thanks for any other info.
It should be in download mode to use ODIN.
Okay let me see if I have this process correct. From the page I download this http://www.multiupload.com/KP8HBPR20Z from under the instructions coming from eclair/froyo. Inside I see the .tar file. (not a .pit file). In ODIN i put the .tar file under PDA and click start. Once that is done I can download the bootloader and flash that via ODIN. Is this correct?
yeh
or you could use rom manager to flash whichever package you want after odining the light version instead of flashing the bootloaders
dont do it
I just went through hell flashing that rom and even BRICKED my phone. (well semi-brick, none of the buttons worked) I made the same mistake as you. Dont use the Simply_Honey_3.8_LightOdin file, use the one that is named simply_ODIN_HEIM . The light odin is bull****. Didnt work for me. I dont even want to guess why...
Good Luck!
Remember to open the .zip and extract the .tar, zip's cant be flashed in odin
Hi guy,,,
i had un-successfull tries with odin. but Also had a successful one when flashing Vibrant with Stock 2.1. it was very simple indeed just downloaded .tar and .pit file, and flash , and thats it.

Thx Guys
Ok , another quick Q: when i flashed 2.1, i downloaded .pit and .tar file.

can i find answer to this please ?
Answer is NO!!
Mapping can be done using the same 512 pit file.
Also you only need to repartition once which you already did when you Odin's to JFD Eclair
Therefore, you don't need to partition anymore.
Also UN-tick reboot on Odin, Otherwise you wont have control the first time in wiping critical stuff before you re-boot. You use the menu on the phone to wipe data/factory reset and then do the wipe the cache next, Then do a reboot otherwise you might end up with a boot loop.
Also why aren't you using Rom Manager, to flash ROM's instead of Odin?
Your going to find out here shortly that 99% of all ROM's are in a zipped file, and must be done using CWM recovery method.
thx for your reply , can u provide me wth a link for detailed guide for beginners to use Rom Manager from scratch ?

Got Root? YOU NEED A CUSTOM RECOVERY!
Big props to XDA user Koush for his amazing Rom Manager App. In short, this lets you create system backups for those "oops" moments. It also gives you a directory of ROMs for easy downloading and flashing. Yeah, it is that cool. Please see his post for instructions. After successfully installing, be sure a make a Nandroid Backup of your system before flashing any rom's (see below).
Installation instructions:
1.Download ROM Manager from the Market.
2.Flash Recovery.
3.Choose Vibrant as your phone.
4.Accept the Superuser prompt.
5.On the very FIRST boot of Clockwork, you may need to manually select "reinstall packages" if Clockwork does not start. You should only ever have to do this once. It will be automatic from then on.
6.Watch the backup go!
Thx Dear,
plz i need to confirm that setting before i dive into Ocean
- i open Odin 1.3 (leave Auto-reboot , F. reset time checked) by default
- will load 512.bit into PIT
- will load "T959UVKA7-REV05-home-low-CL865177.tar.md5" into PDA
- put phone into download mode , connect USB cable , and press Strat.
is this right ? any additional steps or files required ? (i hear about csc , modem files , etc , do i need such files ? or just everything is included in T959UVKA7 version i downloaded from samfirmware.com)
thx in advance..

Backup, Backup, Backup...........that includes the phone internal memory.
Acceptance to loose everything stored in the phone internal memory.....if you need them, perform the step above.
A couple of files which i have provided the links to in the procedure and also below the post. Please use only what is provided here. Thanks.
PROCEDURE
1. Enter download mode (NOT through the reboot menu.)
Rather, hold in volume up and down and then while doing so plug in the usb cable to the phone from the computer.
2. Use Odin to install the full Samsung UCMD8 release (Already has pit file).
3. Flash the downloaded stock rom above using Odin.
4. Reboot to recovery and factory reset when done.
5. Boot device, install framaroot, enable usb debugging before rooting device.
6. Install mobile odin. Reboot.
7. In mobile odin, install new kernel w/ recovery (since this method is for i777, you can use Shift kernel....which i used, need to extract only the "zImage.img" file from the .zip file, if file is named something else rename it to "zImage" and place it on the device for Mobile Odin to read.
8. In Mobile Odin, install the modded .pit file attached below. Thanks to [-Stash-]
Read more about the partitions here and here.
NOTE: Using odin for pc for STEP 8 is also very much working.....espercially for those having issues flashing pit file with the mobile odin version.
9. Reboot to recovery; format / wipe partitions (this includes system, data, internal sd, cache, dalvik).
10. If internal cannot format or gives error, connect phone to pc and mount storage, you can then format as fat32 from windows or whatever operating system you are using (recommended system). When done, unmount and try step above again just to be certain.
11. Flash any new ROM of choice (I use SlimSaber by Cyril279), Gapps (I use slim full gapps,) modem for AOSP roms (I used UCMD8, works best for me but may not be the same for your location, please use what works best for you), and any other addon packages.
12. Optional........enable ART runtime in developer options. Reboot, and wait a long time for it to compile apps ahead of time.
13. Just enjoy :good::good:

Mobile Odin .pit file
Great guide and idea! Thanks for your work!
I'm having trouble at step #8, Using Mobile Odin to install the modded .pit file.
I can't get Mobile Odin to see the .pit file, either as provided, in the .rar container, or as the bare .pit file.
I saw in the posts on this by [-Stash-], which you reference, that regular Odin was used to install the .pit file.
I've read elsewhere that Mobile Odin can't work with .pit files, but I gather you have found a way.
Your guide worked great up until #8, and also after #8.
I was able to continue on and install a great KitKat rom, TheGeekyNimrod's new Unofficial Carbon Rom and the RB-Shift kernel, just without the new partition sizes.
Thanks again for posting this guide, and doing the work necessary to come up with it. I'm looking forward to this better partition scheme.
I would be grateful for any help you could provide.

I would imagine you could still use regular ODIN for step 8, just put the phone back into download mode. Take this with a grain of salt as this is just a guess.

Sorry for the late reply............using odin to flash in download mode also works perfectly. the pit does not harm in anyway (at least for me so far).
When done with pit flash in download mode,.............wait for for a minute or two.
Boot to recovery and format all partitions including internal. Had to mount internal partition and format with pc.
Hope this helps
worked
Thanks. I did this. Although, when the phone boots the initial 'Samsung galaxy sii' splash is now changed to 'SAMSUNG' with the flash of the stock JB, i think. (actually, i dont remember if it was that, or if it was the ICS Semi_v18 ROM I flashed earlier for a different purpose). That splash screen seems to stay longer than before. Anyways, I used mobile odin (need the i777 flash kernel) to flash shift-v4.8 kernel, and then odin to flash the pit file from my computer. I did not have to format with the computer as the recovery seemed to do it fine.
anyone tried this on the SGH-S959G I curently run @cyril279 slimsaber and want to be able to install the full slim gaaps instead of the mini gapps. Plus I feel eventually we will all need bigger system partition if we keep these phones. Or do I need a different pit file?
Figured it out. Modified original pit.
Thanks a lot for the guide.
This worked fine for me. Initially, I didn't get a cellular signal but then I realized that I missed that instruction embedded in step #11. I'm currently using CM11 M10 build with it.
I assume this will work with any custom ROM, but would it work with stock ROMs that are flashed via Oden, or would this kind of flash put the old partition table back?

I think the safest way would be to follow his steps all the way through step 10, then in step 11 re-install the UCMD8 stock firmware using desktop Odin.
Just wanted to say thanks for the writeup! I was frustrated with having to install PA Nano Gapps, so this guide and your modded .pit file were perfect. Just finished installing LS 3.2 Milestone with PA Stock Gapps! :highfive:
Confused & stuck at step 7
Updated: I finally succeed to re-partition; however, I could not go back to SHOstock3 v4 (4.1.2)
If my phone already has a recovery installed and is rooted, can I go ahead and install the modified pit file with mobile odin and proceed from there? why exactly would I need to flash ucmb8 through odin?

Same question.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using XDA Free mobile app
When you flash a new pit through odin everything gets erased except external sd card so use a computer and follow the instructions.
Thanks. I'm attempting to follow the instructions, but I need to use Heimdall instead of Odin. If anyone is familiar with Heimdall, I'd greatly appreciate your help.
I downloaded I777UCMD8_I777ATTMD8_I777UCMD8_HOME.tar.md5.7z file and extracted the contents to a folder.
[email protected]:~/heimdall$ ls
boot.bin I777UCMD8_I777ATTMD8_I777UCMD8_HOME.tar.md5 Sbl.bin
cache.img I777UCMD8_I777ATTMD8_I777UCMD8_HOME.tar.md5.7z zImage
factoryfs.img modem.bin
hidden.img param.lfs
and then boot into download mode and ran: sudo heimdall flash --kernel zImage --factoryfs factoryfs.img --cache cache.img --hidden hidden.img --param param.lfs --modem modem.bin
I receive the following:
Heimdall v1.4.0

Edit: Just read it in i9100 thread that this method should not be used if you want to run stock rom. So flashed backed original pit file from i9100 thread and now the phone is running like as it should be running.
Hi! So friend 1 had asked me to help him root and flash CM on his S3 and I gladly helped. We were having a tough time doing it although I did it quite easily on friend 2's s3. Friend 3 chipped in to help us out by asking us to use Kingroot and let it root the S3. I thought it was ok and we let it do its thing. After it was "rooted" we tried flashing CM. There was an error during the process and it said it couldn't read the binary or something like that. I then wiped /system through TWRP thinking that it would revert everything back to stock. Well, obviously it wiped Android. I am so bad with Samsung phones xD Unfortunately, I did get ahead of myself and did not backup the phone when it still had Touchwiz. Good thing is, I can still access TWRP and download mode. I've already downloaded a stock rom for the s3. Now, how do I flash it? Are there any other solutions?
Thanks
EDIT: I, of course, have Odin and through download mode, would happily flash the stock rom mentioned above. However, Odin only accepts certain types of files such as .tar and .md5 files. Are there any websites that host stock roms ending in .tar or .md5?
Download stock rom from sammobile.com. The downloaded stock rom was compressed with winrar. Extract the downloaded file, you will get .md5 file. Put your phone into download mode connect your mobile to pc. open odin click pda select extracted .md5 file click start wait for 5 min after flashing complete odin will show pass. Unplug your mobile from pc. Goto recovery mode wipe data then reboot system. first boot will take 10 min.
NOTE: I NO LONGER SUPPORT THIS DEVICE, SO I MAYBE LIMITED ON THE NUMBER OF QUESTIONS I CAN ANSWER THAT ARE RELATED TO THE DEVICE!
EDIT: NOW REQUESTING TESTERS FOR THE BOC7 & BOC8 FIRMWARES (FILES NOT YET OBTAINED, SO I DO NOT RECOMMEND APPLYING ATM). NOT RECOMMENDED IF YOU USE YOUR ALPHA AS A DAILY DRIVER! BEFORE "APPLYING", YOU MUST...
-Understand and be okay with the high-ish possibility of having your device brick during/after flash.
-Understand that if something does go wrong, you cannot put the blame on me. Follow all safety instructions for flashing and it should work fine.

Developers Tip: If you want to flash firmware without wiping your data, make sure there is no pit file selected under the PIT tab in Odin, then extract and remove cache.img.ext4 then repack as a .tar file. Applies to both combo and 4 file firmware packages. In 4 file packages, cache.img.ext4 is in the CSC file. However, in some cases this may put your device in a bootloop.
Cheers!
Sorry but... what is the diference between "4 file" and "combo"?

The simplest way to explain 4 file is in Odin, there are 4 firmware slots. The "4 File .rar package" has the correct file for each slot in Odin to flash. Example, extract the .rar package you (might have) downloaded, and you will see 4 .tar files and the pit file. So the BL_xxx_xxxxxxxx_xxxxxxxx_xxxxxx_HOME.tar file would go in the BL slot in Odin.
Combo is basically all of those files that would be in the 4 .tar archives put into one. If you choose to download this file, the .tar package must be flashed though the AP slot in Odin.
And the .PIT file would go under the PIT tab in Odin.
If you don't want to lose your data while flashing, you can do this:
-Don't use the pit file in Odin
--or--
-If you chose to download the 4 file firmware, don't flash the CSC file and don't use the pit file.
--or--
-if you chose to download the combo firmware, you can use 7zip (I recommend downloading it onto your pc if you don't have it already) to extract the archive and delete cache.img.ext4, then repack the remaining files (Except the pit file) into a new .tar archive.
Cheers!

Cheers!

Open Odin and look to the right of the window, you will see 4 buttons, named "BL" "AP" "CP" and "CSC"
Extract the respective 4 file firmware from the downloaded .rar package to your desktop or downloads folder and open the folder once completed.
From there, you can insert the 4 .tar files into Odin. Once in Odin, click on the BL slot and navigate to the folder that contains the extracted files. Once there, select the tar file with the letters BL at the very beginning, and vice versa.
Example: BL_G850AUCU1BOC6_G850AATT1BOC6_LRX22G_HOME.tar (which is the bootloader files for lollipop firmware) would go under the BL slot in Odin.

If you downloaded the combo (all in one) firmware package, extract everything in the .rar file and place the .tar package under the AP slot in Odin, and if you want to perform a clean reset, make sure the .PIT file is under the PIT tab then PIT slot in Odin and make sure that "NAND Erase All" and "Re-Partition" is checked under the 'Options' tab.

I've tested all 4 of the firmware packages and each of them flashed no problem. What firmware version are you on right now? You can check that by going into Settings --> Device --> About Device.

The device hasn't received any ota updates so the flash should work. Did you download the version of Odin I posted on this thread? And did you try the lollipop or the kitkat firmware?

Wiping data will be pointless if Odin can't flash the firmware completely. Did you test the lollipop firmware or the kitkat firmware?

First time with kitkat I left it all night and it didnt end.
I have disconnected the phone in the morning and not started, then I installed the bootloader (of lolipop) alone and it is doing well.

Try booting your phone into download mode then reflash the Lollipop bootloader in Odin (BL File goes under the BL slot for 4 file). If you are not wanting to wipe your data, and if you downloaded the 4 file firmware, you can simply reflash the lollipop bootloader files then afterwards go back into download mode then reflash the AP and CP file. The actual bootloader in the phone does allow the flashing of different firmware versions for the device so it sounds like a small bootloader issue.

You also said that Odin was stuck on something during flash. Do you know what file was it stuck on (What file it said at the top left-hand corner of the Odin window)?

Try a different usb port on your computer, and if the same thing happens, try a different usb cable or switch the ports again.

The G850A Has a locked bootloader, therefore, cannot run TWRP or any custom kernel or recovery.
Cheers!
