[Q] Galaxy S3 max screen on time? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everybody, I sold my HTC One S and bought Galaxy S3.
I heard that the device has great battery life, but what is the max screen time on i can get from Galaxy S3? I will use my device primarily for gaming. Down i will list of what i will have turned off and on.
Wifi - off
Bluetooth - off
Auto Sync - off
GPS - off
Brightness - 50%
Power saving turned off
NFC - off
Netwok mode - GSM
Data connection - off
I hope i will get 4 - 6 h screen on time. Please answer fast

You easily get 6 hours with all that off...

When you do gaming on any phones, the battery life will always be bad especially with a 4.8inch screen. No amount of engineering can solve that logic.

You will get 6hours. If not come back here again

its more complicated than one simple answer
İts about which game you play.. For example, i dont think that angry birds and the amazing spiderman are inspire same battery drain.. Its about cpu and gpu working..
I think its about 4 hours for modern 3d games.. (unreal engine e.g)

My settings are pretty much the same, except I keep wifi on and I keep it in WCDMA/GSM mode. I can get between 6-7 hours of on screen time.

Thank you very much, now i know i did the right decision when i sold HTC One S, which i didn't like because virtual menu button takes screen when playing games.

right on.
home button ftw!
:victory:

with a slideshow app that I usually test screen on time with I got 6,5 hours, with full brightness, and that was after my first charge. Doing things that uses more cpu will give less of course. But 6,5 is awesome for such a large screen. I got 3,5 with the HTC One X that I had before.

oh, i forgot.
What will be max screen on time with everything same as first post, but with full brightness?

Hello everybody, here are my results, and i am pretty happy. I set brigtness to 1/3 and turned off touch key light.
I browsed web 2 hours, played intensive games 2 hours and installing apps for other 1 hour and 47 min.

Just tested mine this week. 3 days of charger (72 hours), screentime was 4+ hours. Yesterday, 48 hours of charger, screentime was 6 hours and 30 minutes.
Gaming: Modern Combat 3, 23% per hour. NOVA3, 25% per hour. Shadowgun, 20% per hour. This is with power saving on!!!!!! When turned off it will be sligthly more.

low screen on
my s3 isnt anywhere near as good as you guys! i can get 3 hours absolute maximum screen on time!

Hmm. As you said you will primarily use the device for gaming, you should get more time out of it than me. Yesterday I had my screen on 99% of the time, testing my program via ADB TCP (Network) not connected to any power source. Full brightness (Because I can) I had about 9 hours out of it. So that actually isn't too bad.
Hope I could help!

S3 screen on time
Hi there,
Is it consider abnormal if my S3 screen on time is about 3 hours?
My settings:
WIFI - off
3G - on
Bluetooth - off
GPS - off
Android version - 4.1.2
Baseband version - I9300DXEMB1
BuilId number - JZ0O4K.I9300XXEMC2
Lately just did factory reset, condition improve (from 10~12 hours to 14~15 hours)

For me, it's about 5h and everything is disabled almost 3g, bluetooth, gps, powersaving is on. And i use phenomenal kernel.

my best result was 6h 8m GlamourS4 Rom
on 2G internet browsing all the time
gps=off
bluetooth=off
brightness 0 since i was in a kind of dark Rom
battery stock 2100mah

ive got extended battery of 3000 but i rarely get above 3 hours medium use with 3g on all the time

Samsung galaxy s3 battery life range for me

my quad core s3 is a no-contract phone . uses pre-paid card. so there is no 3g/4g. i get around 4 hours screen on time with power saving mode on with juice defender on. i find that gaming time in this phone is awful. in the iphone 4, i get 5 hours 3d gaming time. now i dont even get 4 hours 2d gaming time! is this normal with the s3? but stll this is a fantastic phone. without gaming i get 6 hours screen on time. just would like to know if you get the same with gaming. iphone 5 seems to have a really good battery with 8h screen on time.
Make sure you disable wcdma in network settings.... your phone probably searching for a 3g signal and failing.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Get rid of juice defender and turn off power save mode.
Also 8 hours screen on time for ip5 is questionable, these are the same people that said 8 hours 3g use and 10 hours LTE. As everyone knows, LTE uses more power than 3g.
Their numbers are lies/exaggerated.
If you want the iPhone so badly then you know what you need to do.

I too have Power Saving Mode turned on, and manually adjust the brightness (it's always set to the lowest setting).
I have WiFi turned on the entire time that I'm home, and 3G when I'm out.
Auto Sync is on the entire time, because I want to be able to know when I get an incoming email.
That's pretty much it.
I am not able to come close to 4 hours of screen time, before my battery reaches 5-10%. Cell Standby accounts for the most battery usage.
Any pointers/tips?
P.S. Phone not rooted.
Do you have Viber? If yes there is a bug in the latest update that's keeping the proximity sensor on and draining the battery. 4 hours screen on time with battery save mode is really bad. There's probably some app draining the battery.
Ps. Ip5 battery life is a lie as usual, people who have it and actually use it say battery is actually quite bad. Also on the ios stats you don't have 'screen on' time report, but 'usage' time that is a lot more stuff than just screen on time. People who say the have 8 hours are probably just reading the usage time.

Yep; I do use Viber. I think you're right. Ever since I got the latest Viber update, the battery seems to die off sooner.
Should I uninstall and check?
How can I check what rogue app is eating into the battery?
Well. i hate the iphone 5! no i dont have viber. juice defender shows me battery improved by 1.8x. i have auto sync off and power save on. i have disabled mobile data. and i realised i am just expecting too much! i was surfing the stock browser on wifi for 45 min and my phone went from 39% to 34%. guess thats okay.
Viber just fixed the proximity sensor issue; hope this resolves the battery drain issue.
BTW, what is the normal hourly battery drain percentage?
You can install an app called 'betterbatterystats' (very counterintuitive name!) to see what exactly is eating your battery, it takes a while to figure out how it works but it is very usefull!
Google location services in maps and Google now (if you are on jelly bean) drain quite a bit of battery and basically anything running on the background. Obviously you just deactivate what you don't need!
What about the iphone4 and SGS3 screen size ...every mm more=more power

Three days ago, I flashed stock ICS (with wipe). I wanted to test the battery life.
Screen On time was a little under 4 hours.
I spent just a little over 2 hours on the phone.
Wifi was on/off intermittently.
Around 15 minutes of gaming.
The phone lasted 1 day and 20 hours.
That, in my opinion, is really, really good.

You can easily go for 2 days with this phone and normal usage if you turn off or use airplane mode at night. But I never do because the phone is so cool that I use it all the time! I charge at night, still I never get to 0% at the end of the day.
anyone else can post their experience with battery life?

battery life on this babe is good enough for me!
I get around 21-26 hours of standby time and screen on time ranging from at least 5 hours to 6.5 hours. When I don't browse much and just use the Adobe Reader I b get around 7 Hours plus a few minutes.
I switch on power saving mode when the battery drops below 30% and my brightness is set on auto and I'm connected to a 2g network. No gaming. I generally browse the Web for an hours , listen to music for a few minutes and then read on the Adobe Reader.
Auto sync is switched on at all times.

Degraded battery ?

Hello
I've bought a One X+ second hand and the guy that sold it to me said it was only 2 months old. I have reasons to believe he was telling lies.
Here are some screenshots from Battery Stats Plus:
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/...3-09-26-19-26-15_zpse7d1dcab.png?t=1380267112

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/...3-09-26-19-23-55_zps3f36168b.png?t=1380267068
I've only used the GPS for like 3-4 minutes (not using google maps) and Google Maps separately (no GPS) for 3-4 minutes total. I don't know why it shows a big % on battery usage from Maps. Also the battery history from Settings said that I had the GPS on all the time even thought it was turned off.
DS Battery Saver was also turned on (Gentle profile) so it would go to sleep when screen is off.
I generally can barely manage over 24 hours on a single charge (normal usage, 2 hours of on screen time).
When it's sleeping (all communications turned off) i'm usually losing 1% of battery every 45 minutes. Another thing: the last 15% of battery drains in 3-4 minutes when using the phone (browsing, etc).
Is my batery ok ? I think the device's older than 2 months when I bought it because my older Sensation XE could easily manage over 1d6h normal usage even after 1 year.

Your getting simlar battery performance to the rest of us.... My HOX+ needs charging atleast twice a day..
Sent from my HTC One X+ using Tapatalk 2
I am not really harmed with mine's battery life, ofcourse I would prefer having better battery. But overall I can survive 15 hours with 2 hours onscreen surfing the web /xda
And about 40 minutes hardcore gaming (fifa 14 and other games)
With about 30 minutes call time.
But keep in mind during screen off I have my connections off.
P.S if you can root, you should definetly use "Greenify". It's the perfect battery and usage saver.
My day as you see is short but during the night (around 8pm) when I sit on the phone for 6 hours of intensive gaming and surfing the web, I usually have to make 1 and a half charge
Sent from my HTC ONE X+ using XDA Developers app with a random Kame-Hami flying up yo' face.
Hmm....well ok. Before buying the phone I read the battery test on gsmarena and was pretty much pleased with their results. But they tested it on android 4.1 whereas I have 4.2.2
Well if you really want to test battery and know if it's bad or not , charge till 100% then remove the plug and keep it sleeping till it runs out of battery. Or check on it after 3 days to see the percentage .
After doing so, surf the web browser till the battery runs out from 100%
Then charge again till 100% and do some hardcore gaming till it runs out.
The final test, charge till 100% then use the phone with your normal daily use.
If you do not like the battery performance you can switch phones.

I chose its "on wake" option, to avoid frequent sensor reading - didn't know that awakes cpu.
One auto adjustment per screen on sounds fine for most daily use scenarios.
Also removed it from notification to save some space there, instead added a udn nav bar long press shortcut to it, plus another shortcut on home screen, so to easily call it up for additional adjustments as nessesary.
Udn nav bar

Sure, I have the following system apps uninstalled after making a Titanium backup (always good to have a backup, just in case):
[ Edit: Added a few more frozen or uninstalled back to the previous list. Doing a nandroid or user data+settings backup is necessary if you agree human is not always error-free, and wanted to expect the best and be prepared for the worst. I just took a fresh lesson on this G2 - for the first time forgot to correct "build.prop" permission after updating it to system folder; no matter how many times we did it right, once missed and then you'll immediately see it's so easy to brick an dear android lol ]

There are certainly a few more removable but not as big or bad for memory as the above so I just left them aside.
Also tried some apps to manage what apps are allowed to auto start per boot up.
And I only use three home screens; use folders to organize apps icons.
Emails: Gmail uses server push so no polling to set; I couldn't get server push mode working in k-9 mail app, so had to set its sync to every 1 hour.
That's all, nothing special. I think G2 just got a big battery, very energy-efficient sleep mode, plus the GRAM static frame buffer as LG claimed to save up to 20% battery.
Some folks also got over 6 hours screen on out of their Nexus 5:

I'm honestly having a bit of trouble believing that you got 6 hours screen on time AND 58 hours off the charger. Seems like an either/or from what I've read. Did you really get these at the same time, or these are your max on both ends of the spectrum (idle usage vs active usage) ?

I find it believable. It really depends on what that on screen time is used for. Playing intense games like asphalt 8. No.. but simple stuff like browsing the web, tapatalk etc..sure. I personally loss about 1% every 4 hours or so on standby so if I could ever manage not to use my phone all the time lol I could put this to the test. But I'm on this thing all day so it's hard. I'm normally over 2 hours on screen time with 3 hours off the charger. Its hard to put down

Dude that was both. G2 had 6+ hours long screen-on PLUS great sleeping idling hours out of one single charge. Rock solid facts.
It used to impress me with that; now I got used to its long battery life and have to wish new phones catch up with that otherwise it'd be hard to move on to the next without the same or better battery juice.
More than happy to help you evaluate that nice performance with two more screenshots attached in below:
These pictures show G2 idled a few hours in my bedroom where 4g LTE signal strength stays 4 or 5 out of totally 6 bars. The first 5-hour drainage curve went almost horizontal! before it was carried to another place and used a little bit with 3-bar CDMA 3G connection and reached 96%. With that 5-hour slope how long do you think the big battery on G2's back will last in standby?
The phone stayed mostly at home in the long weekend so it enjoyed its good sleep, and as I said most screen-on time was for news browsing/emails/mms etc. (while tasks like streaming video or playing game will not benefit much from G2 GRAM static buffer.)
I don't play video games with phone so for moderate daily uses my G2 usually logs 4-6 hours screen on time before a recharge.
I like the idle on the g2, I can leave my phone over night or at work and still have full battery just about, I'm using the OC/UV kernel and Greenify, disabled alot of things, check the ss. I'm on Cleanrom 2.0 AT&T, would like to make the change to rayglobe but I don't know if I'll get the same battery performance.

Okay, okay Sorry, just seemed nuts to me. My G2 was about 60 hours on battery, but only 70 minutes screen on time. And I've heard that people are getting max about 7-8 hours screen on time, so didn't sound possible to get that long on both at the same time.

Your g2 can make it too... come on g2 is g2 lol. Have you debloated the stock rom? Some social networking apps/services or fancy UI features like eye tracking might keep phone awake, busy or burn battery quicker, or try some auto start management tools? Someone here mentioned using Greenify - that even prevents apps from switching on by themselves (sounds great yet I didn't go that far, for it needs xpose framework, a new thing I'm not familiar with). If just doing news browsing and emails/msg then 5 or 6 hours screen on should leave enough power for long sleep time.
I think the difference could be in the "idle" mode. The battery curve in idle/sleep time is a check point - staying within a decent signal zone either on 3G or LTE for a few hours without traveling among towers, compare that g2 battery curve with those posted here and see if the slope is really really flat.

Thinking of upgrading to the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge but worried about that the battery life won't be the same as my Note 4. I normally got around 4 hours on screen time with a charging time of 90 ish minutes, does the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge really beat that?
Share you screen on time screenshots with your S6 Edge. Does having the curved screen always on information stream drain your battery? What's your screen on time with bluetooth turned on most of the time,
Does 15 minutes of charge really provide you with 2 hours of watching HD video, does it have to be the default player or can it be any, like MX Player
I'm just gonna leave this here.
Sent from my SM-G925F using XDA Free mobile app
I always get 5hrs 40 mins watching Netflix on data so yeah it should. Most people get about 4hr 30 mins and up.
Well, i am one of those that never get the Screen time people show they get, i guess it's my brightness settings or that i leave everything on, bluetooth, nfc, wifi, gps etc..
I have the phone for 2 weeks and never went under 40% of battery , but at 40% i was with 8 hours on battery , 1h 28 min of screen on time. So i have the feeling that for me wont last over 3h of screen time. I might have some high drainage on stand by thought , wakelock or something. Today i charged my phone and went for a bike ride , so i barely used the phone, right now i have 82% of battery - 5h 45 min on battery with 19min screen on time.
Just sharing , not saying the phone's battery sucks. For me it's fine.
Depends on lots of factors. Some people have really bad battery life while others have awesome battery life. I've never had an issue with regards to battery life and I recently rooted and swapped to Edgar's debloated rom. I am using Kt kernel on stock clocks with undervolting on big and little cores of around 75. Unfortunately I got stuck with some bad binned chips or I would have under volted even more. Usage consists of Netflix, tapatalk, reddit and Facebook (web), and texting. I'm not a gamer but I do play clash of clans for about 15 minutes a few times during this cycle.
I can't attach my photos for some reason.
Sounds awesome. I would love to get around 5 hours of Screen on time with Bluetooth on and connected to my Gear S. I would mostly be using it to browse the web, play YouTube videos and download large files often. Do you have to give the battery time to adjust to your habit to get the maximum amount of usage.
The battery takes time to settle down. I think 4hrs sot should be possible for medium use. This is what I've always got with all the Samsung phones. I used to get near 5hrs sot with note 4. I've only had the phone a few days now and the battery was very poor to start with and used to get soooo hot during charging. It seems to be settling down...else is going back. ...I'm still trying to get used to the size lol

I find that having wifi and mobile data on drains battery like crazy... this is my first android phone and on my iphone i could turn off 4G and stay on 3G to save battery but not an option on the s6 :/

Question Official battery life thread

I have the S23 Ultra since February 3rd and battery life gets better and better.
I don't know what to say. I think this s23 ultra is faulty. I can't be at 29% battery used with over 6 hours screen on time! Light use, from 80% charge
15 hours total uptime, 8 and a half hours screen off time, gotta sleep sometime. LIGHT performance profile used and screen at 60hz cause 120hz my eyes can hardly see. It's smoother yes, but barely, battery life is king for me
All on WiFi, location on, most apps sleeping. Gobsmacked. It's beating the redmagic 8 pro that's in the household with its 6k mah battery.
I'm expecting a lot less using mobile data, surely

Amazing battery
This phone is perfect
Got it since February 10th in the USA and I can only say battery has been great. Compared to my other phones ( coming from a pixel 7 pro and a Xiaomi mi 11 5g) the battery life is just excellent on this s23 ultra, for such a big device and huge screen size I think Samsung finally nailed it. No sleeping apps, not profile settings just plain stock and so far so good. Wifi and data on 24/7, location on 24/7, VPN 24/7 . The browser times where spent a huge time watching videos from it, almost an hour of video calling and shooting some video and photos, couple of sessions of gaming.

How much do you lose on standby? Say overnight, while sleeping, over 8-10 hours how much do you lose ?
My last check yesterday was 3 percent

Thanks, is that with WiFi data Bluetooth GPS etc off? How many hours standby did you lose 3% on?
The amazing battery life has a lot to do with the display too. It is a hugely more efficient panel.
Samsung gave the Galaxy S23 series a new energy-efficient AMOLED display
Samsung confirmed that it has fitted the Galaxy S23 line with a new type of AMOLED display that saves on power.

All on. Wifi. Data. Location. Bluetooth. Performance mode.
I'm so happy with this battery performance and am afraid to update OS when it comes out...Given the great track record of Samsung breaking things that don't need fixing, there's a high probability that the battery life will go for a toss
Had my s23 ultra since 7 Feb and consistently get just under 10 hours of SOT (most of my day is indoors on WiFi, with a 2 or 3 hours walk most afternoons in 4g)
I am running pretty.much on default settings for screen and battery - I just use my phone normally and forget about battery optimisation settings
This is the best battery.life EVER on a Samsung!
After 2 weeks with the 23u and my standard use of it i have from 85% to 30% (i never go below 30%) 4h SoT

I think it is ok. I use performance mode, all location, Bluetooth with watch, some 5G, some WiFi etc.
I mostly read on phone, scrolling...

Have you done anything specific in battery settings? Any debloating? Is this with wqhd + 120hz? Standard mode or lite mode? What's your battery settings ?

Yes I did debloat, light batter profile and battery saving (it's more than powerfu enough).
Plus I have disabled all the nearby services for smarthings find the phone offline wifi quick share etc.
I don't like having the phone always sending radio signals around for no reason

Can you give a brief list of what you debloated?
Also, android system intelligence service, is that even a necessary app? Would cause any issues if I disabled/deleted it?

Honestly I didn't track the changes, but I followed this guide
[DISCONTINUED] Samsung Galaxy One UI - Optimization Guide
THIS IS A SUGGESTED CONFIGURATION FOR SAMSUNG DEVICES OUT OF SUPPORT/CLOSED I - RECOMMENDED SETTINGS To Start With - Factory Reset before starting optimisations - Factory Reset after every Major update (One UI/Android) - Remove SIM before first...

I wasn't even too much aggressive with debloating, maybe I'll go for a second round
