Just picked up my Razr Maxx at Verizon. I got the car dock that doesn't say Maxx on the box. The salesman said the computer has the same part number for either model phones. I see the Moto website says different. Help?
As long as it's fit, I wouldn't see a problem. Cause the only differences between RAZR and maxx is the thickness.
Sent from my Maxxed Out Razr!
I'm tempted to say it quite matters. I can't remember if it was the car dock or hd dock I had to exchange, or hell, I might have been both.
I believe you can take off a plastic insert that would touch the phones back if it was docked. That should allow you to dock the thicker maxx. But i read somewhere that it doesnt fit as snug as it should. Just take it back and get the Maxx dock. Just to be safe. And if youve already opened it let us know how it fits compared to the maxx dock.

Anyone tried the RAZR with the old webdock/lapdock that was originally made for the Atrix ?
Yes. It does not fit. Connectors are on top, not on the side of the phone and the position of micro HDMI and USB is swapped. Have not tried it with extension leads yet. Might work.

i am writing this post right now with my RAZR attached to the Atrix laptop. it doesnt fit perfectly so you have to push it in and not wiggle it too much to work but it works.
It can with modifications to rotate the ports around. Simple unscrewing cover, then flipping the plugs.
I referenced this for my mod:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1223032
The only downside is the phone stands straight up, so using the dock app is sideways. Otherwise web top works great.

i thought they have the lapdock 100 out or something thats supposed to work with the phones that dont fit the atrix lapdock
I've modded my ATRIX LapDock and I constantly use it with my RAZR.
Oh, I've cut of just an half centimeter the docking plastic so that the RAZR would fit perfectly like this lapdock has been produced exactly for the RAZR
@kholk,
Could you post some pics with your Razr standing on the Atrix laptop dock please ? I want to see it before i decide to order an atrix lapdock.
The MOD made to the ATRIX LapDock's dock is much better in reality... when you look at it, it doesn't seem THAT crappy!

Nice mod kholk, did you support the phone's back with something ? It looks like it might harm the ports of the phone.

I did also... went back in and searched for it again and only shows in refurb now so ordered that for $79 with free shipping and it arrived 48hrs. later...
What kind of extention cables would fit the ports?
I checked it out on amazon

And the extension cables

I got the dock at 59.99 However the price appears to have gone back up to 80. Still a good deal. In my case I bought 2 and I modded one. The mod was fairly easy for the moto razr maxx (razr regular as well) just unscrew the two screws on the sides of the dock (the thing that flips up) and then pop off the casing and unscrew the bracket holding in the connectors. flip them upside down (might need to use an exacto to shave the opening a little more. Then reassemble.
Lastly. Shave down sloped side with the exacto down enough that the phone can rest on the dock just fine. Even upside down like that it seems to be quite secure. That said if you like the pristineness of the lapdock then get a set of cables linked above. As I bought two docks and two sets of cables (hedging bets) both methods work just great.
Hello all. My apologies for raising an old thread up from the dead but if anyone is interested in a Motorola Atrix lap dock then check out your local Radioshack.
No, I'm not advertising for them; just giving you guys a heads-up.
Anyway, a new batch of clearance tags came out today and the Atrix lap dock is down to $19.97 in one of my local stores and they have two of them in stock. The price in your Radioshack may be different as stores price clearance items differently but its definitely worth a check.
The catalog number for the lap dock is 170-6310 which will be the same company-wide so start calling!
Cheers

I looked at the Maxx and it looks like the front is the same. I wonder if it's possible to buy the battery and the back cover and upgrade ours to the maxx. anyone know where to find these parts as of now?
Keep an eye on this http://cnn.cn/shop/motorola-droid-razr-xt912-c-22_1393.html
so far it's the only place I found for spare parts. I bought some iPhone parts in the past and the service is very good, delivery is usually in ±10 days
It will need some more votes to convince them to make it: http://www.accessoryswamp.com/3500mah-extended-life-motorola-droid-razr-battery.html
I'm working on a RAZR with 3 maxx batteries on the back. Ima gonna call it Razr MadMaxx 3. I'll post some pics when its working

Yeah, that price sounds a little cheap. I'm betting the final product is a tad bit more, but I'm quite OK with that as long as it's quality. Unfortunately, their current description lists just a "replacement back" and no details regarding whether or not it will be carbon fiber / kevlar coated like our existing one is (I highly doubt it will), which is kind of a bummer. In addition, I know Moto has used a different type of battery technology to achieve such a slim profile, and who knows if these guys are capable of executing that same technology - if not, it could be a monster looking addition.
Lithium Polymer batteries are used in these phones like the iPhone
Bought a Anker 8500mah external batt from Amazon for mine. I'd love to have the bigger internal batt but I'll bet the replacement back is gonna be some angular funky looking bulge whereas the MAXX is just a bit bigger throughout the length of the phone. If it were like this, I'd consider it. Otherwise the MAXX case wouldn't be useable. IF they make it so it uses the available MAXX sized cases, I'm in....otherwise, I don't need a slim phone with a huge rectangle wart on the back that won't fit in a case....
I am assuming that if you go with a battery conversion kit for the Maxx battery the standard Razr car dock will no long work. Can anyone confirm this?
I can confirm that the Standard Razr Car dock will not work with the Razr Maxx. It almost fits, but no joy.
I can also confirm that the Razr Maxx car dock is awesome!
Actually, the razr dock will work with the maxx if your maxx has the maxx moto hard shell case on it (the one with the folding kickstand on the back of it). However you have to remove the plastic adapter on the dock. Once the adapter is off, there is still some play for the phone while in the dock (i.e. it puts lateral pressure on the connectors from the weight of the phone). I cut the bottom portion of the adapter off and remounted it to the dock. It removes the air gap from the bottom and allows the phone to rest on the bottom of the dock area.
Glad I figured this out so I could use my docks. It ticked me off when I deduced that basically all of the razr accessories don't work with the maxx hard shell case even though that is what I was told at VZW store. My mod of the car adapter is probably going to be a serious frankenstein once I get around to doing it.
I have been looking for a good windshield mount for my Droid Razr Maxx for a while and i cant seem to find one that i like. I don't want any that come with any connectors, i just want it to hold the phone. I want a flexible neck, not 2 ball joints. I also want something that will not interfere with the volume or power buttons (i don't care about having access to them, i just don't want the holder to be pressing on them) and i want to be able to rotate the phone on its side. I would also like the ability to use front and rear cameras so i need something that wont block them.
Do you guys have any suggestions?
well i bought the moto car dock on amazon for about 30 bucks. granted it isnt a flexible neck, and it has the power connector, but man I really like it. I also looked and i could attach its cradle to various other bases at Best buy so you might be able to get a flexible neck one there. all buttons and cameras are free and unobstructed on the phone when docked as well.
Thanks man. I didnt know that the Motorola dock was detachable. Is it one of those that has 4 slots on the back and you just slide it up in order to remove it?

I was in the market for a car dock too for my maxx. Mine has a otterbox commuter though so I bought a arkon dock off amazon and it works great! It doesn't press the buttons, it's rock solid, and it can attach to your ac vents, any surface, or on your windshield. I have a truck and abuse it and the dock doesn't budge.

I also have an Arkon universal dock (see page here), it does not interfere with the buttons at all, you are able to charge it and use headphone cable if you need to, you can also turn it to use it in landscape mode for navigation or something. Rock solid, no vibrations as long as you tighten the joint up.
I would agree with you buddy but yesterday my joint started to fail and now it slides down on its own when I am driving.

I've been using a SlipGrip window mount for the last couple of months and really like it. Build is of good quality-very sturdy, totally adjustable. It's built specifically for this phone in this case but they make many others for other make/model/case combinations. It fits my Razr with the Defender case on it perfectly. All the buttons and ports are accessible. There's even a hole for the camera lens if you need to shoot video while driving.
Highly recommended.

Is it really that sturdy? I need one that won't move when I drive rough lol.

Can't speak to anything off-road but it's fine for regular driving. It doesn't look like it's gonna just snap over nothing if that's what ya mean.
Ok I didn't mean off road I just drive fast thanks for the quick response, I will look into buying one

I have an otterbox commuter case, and mine snaps right into my stock Garmin
GPS mount. It is actually easier to mount/unmount than the Garmin.

OK, so i got the Motorola Razr Maxx car dock from Amazon. I freaking love it.
The issue i had was that if the dock was mounted on the windshield it need a long neck so it can be mounted really low on the windshield so it doesn't interfere with my view. So i did manage to get the round disk that comes with this to stick on the curvy dashboard and ended up mounting it there just above the radio.
*Buttons and Cameras not obstructed at all
*Solid construction
*Easy dock un-dock
The one issue that i have is that if i plug in the usb cable to my stereo unit's (Pioneer AVH-P1400DVD) and the on the dock, when i dock my phone wont charge. If i plug it straight to the phone it charges. If i plug the dock on the cigarette lighter 1.5Amp charger it works fine. I'm guessing the dock incrases the resistance and the unit doesnt have enough juice to power it. i will investigate some more and i will let you know.
i had a pretty bad experience with the original motorola dock.
after only a few days in the car it got completely deformed by the heat of the sun...thats just cr*p.

Just got my slip grip in for my commuter and razr maxx. Came in 2 days! Way ahead of schedule and it's built like a tank. Never moves at all when I'm driving wrecklessly Haha. Holds the razr maxx with case tightly and perfectly. Easy to remove too. Btw buy from the slip grip Site and pay for the model that is 5 dollars more expensive

Really? Mine works great, my only complaint is that it doesn't seem very secure on the dock, and it definitely doesnt work with cases
Works great with slim Cases like the Barely There and Feather.

So I bought two, one for work, one for home. The case I was using, a diztronic minimal case, doesn't fit in the dock. Kind of upsetting, guess I'm going bare phone!

How thick is case? Doesn't the back rest on your dock push in?
Sent from my DROID RAZR MAXX HD
I bought and have been using one of these since I got my phone. While the car dock is amazing, this desk HD dock isn't too great. I don't like the way this dock functions, how it sits, etc. It's offcenter, the back adjuster is...poor so I'm constantly having to readjust it.
But it DOES work. It charges fine, triggers desk clock mode, does HDMI stuff...
