I've noticed a few times when I receive a message and try and open out from the status bar the app will load but nothing comes up in the window ( besides the Messaging app name at the top). Was wondering if this is an isolated case or common.

Same case here
I think its ICS bug

another issue I have is when I type an SMS, after a few characters I get a note saying "starting sms #2" or something like that, definitely didn't go above the 190 characters in the first text.
Do others experience this too ?
Out of the Thousands of sms that i received and opened (I've opened a lot of SPAM messages :crying the same way the OP has opened never even once did this case occur. And out of the a few hundred sms i've typed and sent never reached 190 characters, but never received the "starting sms #2" message ever.
By the way I'm on ICS.

Same case for me.
I have that same behavior on ICS on the Xperia ion. Looks like its common to Sony's build.

same problem,
wait official update,or any Solution?
I'm not using stock Message app and didn't have this problem. You may want to change message app. Go SMS is a good one

what are they sending? pics with audio? my gf has a iphone and I get her pics but thats all she sends is pics..she has never sent me a pic/audio etc before so that may be the issue.
I got a weird error message on my first mms also, and the pic for some reason came in almost like it was a 5 second video instead of a picture.

That's how the stock Android messaging app does MMS for some reason.. a 5 second video.
You should download GOSMS, very good replacement text messaging app.

No just pics no audio. Its a hit or miss with the MMS. Some will come through and some will show me that message.I even switched out my phone thinking it may have just been a faulty phone...I was incorrect.I'm surprised nobody else is having this issue.

This started happening to me today. I didn't change anything on the phone. All of a sudden I'm getting this for the majority of MMSes coming in from iPhones. Sometimes the pictures work, most of the time they do not. I have no trouble sending to them, they can see everything I've sent except for .3gp videos and sound formats iPhone doesn't support.
This is becoming really frustrating, and AT&T's tech support line is closed. :|
is there any way to stop that goofy feature, where if someone sends me one picture it comes to me as a 5sec slideshow, which doesn't allow me to zoom in on the picture at all. Or if they send me a series of pictures those also come in as a grouped together slideshow. I want it to just give me clickable single pictures that open in the gallery and let me view them full screen and be able to zoom in and out.
My girl has a 4s i kept getting a mms from unknown sender message constantly when she sent pics (no not naked ones) i downloaded handcent SMS set up as my default messagr and now it works like a charm plus has more custom options.

No FC message just returns to home screen very often. Also get extra words sometimes. Happens about every third or fourth text. Occurs in stock messaging and GO SMS PRO. Hoping ICS will correct.
Anybody experiencing this issue or has solution?

Hi all.
Have rooted my s3 with the omega rom and using go launcher. Wanted to know, after having searched xda as well as Google, how to either - disable the deliver report sound OR disable the deliver report screen wake up. Its annoying when constantly texting a conversation to have to discard the notification of every sms received.
I like the implementation of the stock ics delivery report (just adds a tick mark to the sms) but the stock ics messaging app doesn't search threads by person. Only searches the messages. (So if there's a mod for that to enable search threads by person name as well then perfect, will ditch Samsung mms/sms app in a heartbeat).
Thanks
Kunal.

Try other sms apps in play store.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
True but other apps don't replace the Samsung stock app. They just overlay it thus wasting precious resources. (As I understand it, please correct me if I'm wrong.)
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Give it a try. Android quite good in handling resources. If it really cripple your phone, then just uninstalled it and find other solutions.

Have already tried Go sms or whatever the name is. Best sms I've found is the stock ics app but as stated in my 1st post, it for some reason doesn't search by threads only by messages. so if I have a thread with you, a search by your name won't yeild the thread as a result. only such messages where your name is mentioned will be shown. If there's a mod for that then that's perfect. Much better, lighter and faster app than the stock Samsung app.

Any senior member knows a hack for this? Come on I'm surprised the delivery report tone and wake screen hasn't irritated anyone else?

It has iiritated me too
I, on the other hand, prefer to use any other SMS than the stock one, but any other program will not disable the Delivery Reports.
It is very annoying that everytime you send out a message you get a "message delivered" reply, that I have to keep erasing every once in a while.
I have posted several times, in several forums, looking for an answer to this but apparently everybody enjoys knowing their messages reached their destination, as nobody seems to care.

To disable Delivery Notifications open Messages app --> Settings --> SMS Settings ---> Uncheck delivery notifications...
That disables delivery notifications. I like to know that the message is delivered. I just don't like that it sounds out like a normal sms and wakes up my screen. Just a tick on the sent message or a silent delivery report without the screen wake up is perfect. (Like in the stock ics mms app. However in the stock ics mms app one can't search for threads only for messages, while in the Samsung mms app thats possible).

This post is very old but if anyone had the same problem, just use the app "Messaging Notification". It solves the problem.
Thanks! This app is great! To recive proper funcionality I set "Silent" a ringtone in SMS app (to keep showing the SMS in notification bar) and everything else (the ringtones) I set in this app.
Why is there no way to disable the annoying delivery report notification in the status bar every time a message is received and just simply get the little checkmark on the bottom of the message bubble? I have tried third party messaging apps (Handcent, GOSMS, Chompsms, iphone messages) and the HTC Sense's compatibility is abysmal, it simply does not want to play nice. I called HTC and they were no help, nor was verizon. Any ideas?
You can turn it all off in message settings. There is no way just to get the check mark on stock Sense.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app
Yes, it annoys me too. But if you uncheck delivery report in the settings, there's no way of knowing if it was delivered... In earlier HTCs there was a check on the bottom of a message, without status bar notification.

so annoying! think theyll fix it in the new update?
are owhonot
installed update, issue still not fixed. dammit!
It shows a message icon at the bottom corner of the text when it's sending, it disappears when it's sent, watch for that, that's how I tell without the notification
But it only means it went out OK from your end. Doesn't mean it was received on the other end. That's the problem.

When is a text message not received? If it is sent it will go to their phone. If it is off it will be pushed when their device turns on.

Hi Guys!
I hate the stock messaging app so I use GoSMS Pro for my texting. The problem is, whenever I get a group message, the app lags like crazy and if i get 3-4 group messages at a time, the phone becomes unusable. Is there another app that can group message effectively. I don't want an app that recieves group messages but then when it sends the message to the people in the group, they get it outside of the group message. Thanks!
I've seen others complaining, but I have no problems. I use GoSMSPro and in the pop up group messages come up as a picture and I have to open the app to see it, but no issues other than that slight inconvenience.
When I get a group message the phone actually goes through a two step process.
First, it tells me that I've received a picture from the contact that sent the group message. If you click on that message, it takes you to your individual chat with that person, which is very laggy.
Second, it combines that message with the group message, tells you that you've recieved yet another text, and then takes you to the group text, which takes 10-15 seconds to appear. If during that process, another group message has been sent by anyone else in the group text, the app more or less locks up and doesn't work at all for about 30 seconds.
Go dev apps are known to be slow and buggy. It was weird for me as well. I would recommend not using anything by them. There is an app of the playstore that is 99% the AOSP messaging app if you are interested.
What's the name of the app?
