Does the S3 have fastboot? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Or is it strictly odin/heimdall?
EDIT: I do NOT use Mac OS X.
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using Tapatalk 2

No......
I'm afraid not although you could always use a virtual machine or a friends PC to use odin. I also belive that you can use some software on Mac OS X that has replicated Odin, I have forgot where although yuo should be able to find it doing a quick search in google.
Hope this helps
Steven

If your a Mac user you could also download a Linux live CD and run heimdall off that environment. Once you have the phone rooted you can just use mobile Odin from then on in.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2

Uhm.. I would rather live on an island with no Internet and no technology whatsoever than use any, and I mean ANY of Apple's products. Mac OS X included.
I use Windows 7, though I'm considering installing Linux.

Yep, just Odin/heimdall I'm afraid.
Would love if it had fastboot, its so convenient if you are stuck, one thing I miss from the gnex.
But to be fair, Odin and mobile Odin do a bang up job so we're not too badly off!

I must admit Odin and mobile Odin are extremely good (I use both) and Chainfire is the man when it comes to this stuff!
I miss fastboot a lot, though, as it was so darn convenient when I had my Gnex. One thing that was a pain in the backside though, were the drivers. They did work for a long time for me while other times they wouldn't work at all

Yup, I agree, chainfire is a legend, mobile Odin is the sh*t, it doesn't increase the flash counter so its all good, regular Odin then for emergencies!
Ya those drivers were a pain in the behind alright, I found a good guide somewhere online at the time and got them to work first time but like you say I remember seeing some people trying everything and still not being able to get them to work, I dread the day I get a new laptop and have to set all that crap up again! :/

Two things I miss with the Gnex running Jellybean:
1. The incredible smoothness.
2. No lag when waking the device up, which seems to haunt all other Samsung non-Google devices.

In some custom kernels you can disable deep sleep (IDLE+LPA) which will make the device wake up instantly.
However, just as with the GNEX and other instant-waking-up phones this means that the standby battery drain is significantly higher
than when the CPU actually completely goes to sleep.

Well I don't remember having ****ty battery on the Gnex. It was decent enough, and I usually always charge my phone every night.
Can you please link a kernel that either has IDLE+LPA disabled or allow disabling it?

Siyah kernel for sure, probably more too.
I'd rather leave it on, its basically deep idle like we had on nexus s.

[Q]How come it boots so fast?

I have a question..
Anyone know why this machine boots SO fast!!?
Coming from Nexus S latest it was at least like a minute.. This is done in like 10 sec. Yes better CPU but I don't think it is THAT much to the CPU?
Guess RAM has a big part to blame to..
The CPU makes a pretty big difference when booting, whether it's a mac, pc or a phone. But I'm sure it's something else making it boot quickly too.
The software
Yeah, I was pretty amazed by that as well, first time I rebooted it I thought it hadnt gone down properly, its silly fast.

whats the biggest problem you have with your vibrant?

Tell us your biggest problem you have with the tmobile galaxy s vibrant.
how would you change it?
Samsung/T-Mobile support an easy to break USB ports that's all overall excellent phone
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App
The USB port that's basically it. Also battery life sucks for me as well.
This phone was pretty well built other than the GPS sucking, but I don't use it that much nor do I actually have big problems like others.
We also need more love from Samsung so we can get a Gingerbread leak going
wonder why the usb ports dont last in these. maybe location?

Cuz before we use to plug in the phones just to charge them. Now every time you log in to XDA (or your favorite Devs. forum) there is some new **** you wanna install in your phone....plug-unplug...oh I just found this new cool wallpaper...plug-unplug...new ROM...plug-unplug...new kernel...plug-unplug...new (you get the point). You probably plug-unplug your phone 10 times during the course of one day. Back then it was just once every 2-3 days to charge. Don't say they make them cheaper now, they just get abused now.
...Oh yeah, almost forgot. My biggest problem (besides not getting GB for the Vibrant) is that when I wanna take a picture in a dark place I noticed I'm missing that little small LED light that shines when you take a picture which most new phones comes with....what is it called???...oh yeah is a ****ING FLASH SAMSUNG! WTF what is a roll of the dice? "OK lets see which of the new Galaxy S devices is NOT getting a flash just for the **** of it...roll it"...OR.... "Sir, sir we forgot to put a flash on the one going out for t-mobile"...." **** them I have Verizon anyways, keep going"
**** lack of proper gps, **** bad usb (actually mine is alright so idk) but goddammit! Why the **** doesn't this have flash?
there isn't even a logical answer to that.

ffc was obviously planned then removed, maybe they planned to release a second version with it all along.... kind of weasel-ish if you ask me
"omg new phone! it has what we took out of the first one!"
My only problem is getting the gps to work. If I manage to get it to work flawlessly, I'd be happy. As for battery life, I've found the ROMs that do give me the best battery life.

I thought it was related to root but I've had these hot reboots even before rooting so it's not just root. Most likely an app.

Will take a while to hunt down the app but anybody else have 'LinkedIn' app installed? It just hot rebooted while launching that app from a fresh restart - quickest hot reboot I've ever seen.
It might not be that app but then I went to the Play Store page and there are tons of 1 star reviews because the last update failed on people's phones - more interestingly the most recent comment is from a GS2 user who says latest update reboots his phone.
I've uninstalled it and I doubt I can be that lucky that it's that app and I find it so quickly but crossing my fingers.
Mine rebooted after I opened the Navigation app.

Well I'm tired of the random hot reboots! Some people say it happened to them before rooting, but I don't believe it happened to me until I rooted and installed CWM touch......so I'm going back to stock to start all over again so I can try to narrow down the issue. I'll report back on my progress as it becomes available.

Happening often to me. The search continues. I've now uninstalled adfree. I'm positive this is an app since I had it occur on stock after two weeks of using the phone and installing crap.

I had the same problem on my previous Captivate and am having it now on the GS III; no rhyme or reason to the reboots that I can see.
I still have heat problem but I played w/ different settings to see what it is.... I had att s3 which got really really hot... So returned it for Verizon s3. Verizon is better but learned that the data (lte/s3) makes it really hot and battery drain. Also the screen, of course.
If you're rooted then go get Phone info and disable lte. I tried CDMA auto for Verizon and it got much better... But at lowered download speed. I change it when I speed the speed... Doesn't require reboot so it's easy to change.
U can also under clock using setCPU.
I don't need it to be fast normally except when playing games... So just have it at 384min and 1024max... I find this helps allot w/ heat as well... U can try and find your setting that's acceptable speed and heat.
Just sharing my experience here.... So good luck.

Happens here too with the T-Mobile GS3. I think they rushed their fabrication process to deliver a high volume and fubared a few hardwarewise. I've even had it lockup/freeze once when not even in the OS but just in the recovery menu's. But yeah, the usual is a totally random unpredictable hot reboot throwing out my resident programs, homescreen, ect. Starts with the screen being frozen and not accepting input, then a short vibration, then back to homescreen reloading and all regular apps and widges that are supposed to run at boot load again. It's as if there's a micro static short or something. Anyway, I'm sick of problem solving and looking through logcats. Going back in for warranty. This is a dream phone except for this ultra annoying bug that it seems not many people have.

Happened to me once or twice (that I noticed) in the two weeks before I rooted (stock UCALEM), and a few more times after. It's just TouchPiz being pizzy. Maybe someone can catch the logcat, but there's nothing we can do about it (except install a better ROM )
How would anyone be able to diagnose this BS
"OK. My phone is hot. And it randomly reboots".
"Crap - u r out of luck buddy. Go change ur damn phone".
Provide ur phone model, ROM version, apps installed. Check ur battery stats.
As a solution - flash any custom ROM which removes bloatware.

1 concern.

So I ended up caving in and buying this phone thanks to your xda feedback. You may have responded to my topic before. I love this phone, man is it a beast of a phone for its contract price.
But anyway, only one small concern. This phone gets pretty damn hot. Is this safe at all? I mean for the phone.

When I first rooted, mine got scalding hot in recovery, so hot that it would shut itself off and not turn on until cooling off. Given that, it hasn't done it since the first couple weeks, and my phone is still running excellently with no signs of slowing. I would say don't worry about it.
Eco mode helps with that.

Happened to me when the phone was new all the time, including before I'd rooted it. Gradually happened less and less. Now I can't remember the last time it happened. A few weeks? Over a month? In any case, don't worry about it too much. Mine was the black kernel crash screen though. I think I've only had the yellow screen once.

I'm pretty sure it happens on that rom because of a glitch in the WiFi part of the kernel. When I was running it I just set the WiFi band to 2.4 only (instead of 5) which fixed it for me.

That happens because we are using the n4 aboot. Our hardware differs from the n4 where our up is the opposite key of their up, so it gives that bug.

I usually play on another phone, but I have to send it in for repairs so my Optimus G is my only phone for a week or so and I'd love full functionality in the game.
