Seems its a bug in ICS. Try taking a pic in the dark with flash on, the flash goes off before the pic is taken.
My friend has the same issue on his XS.
did you try another camera app? try https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.moblynx.cameraics&hl=de to see whether the issue only occours with the sony camera app or others too
Didn't try other app. Don't you have this bug ?
Yes, I think I have also seen this problem....
Another bug in the camera app?
I've never used the flash actually but now I atleast know that it can happen.
I really don't understand Sony here. There are so many bugs...

I don't have any such problem with camera flash while taking pics in total dark. I have been testing the camera flash in the dark off and on since last week & it is working just fine for me. Looks like we all have some or other issues with the camera app on ICS so far! Btw do you face the same issue on various modes other than auto mode? Will keep you posted if i find this bug though!
I've tried this with 3 different Xperia S now and none have this problem.
The light comes on for a few seconds to allow the camera to focus. Then it will turn itself off, followed by the picture being taken.
I just took 9 pictures and all of them are well lit (small but pitch black bathroom) and all are in focus.
So just try doing it like with any camera, press camera button half way and let the light come on so it can focus, when you get a green square(s) press the button all the way and the flash will fire again.
That Moblynx camera app installed in cm9 rom, and i dont like it...
I dont have a problem with stock cam. I love it. Everythink works fine, and it has many option. But if you want good photos buy a camera

Well yes that's how it works on my phone as well. But on GB the light would stay on unless I released the camera shutter button. The actual photos come out clean, no problems there. Just that the flash doesn't stay on continuously like in GB.

Hmmm.. i see, i thought you meant your pics came out dark as flash wouldn't fire. Anyways it happens on mine too but i don't think its a bug or issue. I mean why waste battery keeping it on after the camera has focussed! Flash is fine for me as long as it does its job. Also, it is usual on all other camera phones/ cameras i've used (cameras, of course, have the IR though).
Maybe sony make it to be less battery consumption!

Is it possible to get a proper "Flashing" LED when taking a picture (I've seen the HTC Desire does this), instead of this very poor "Photo Light" option that's been on this device since Android 1.6?
I've seen little info on this subject, all I remember was reading about it back when it was on 1.6. Back then I recall some mentioning that it was an OS limitation, so should be working and fixed when we received the 2.1 update.
But since we're now well in to a long list of 2.1 updates and yet to hear about why there is no proper camera flashing, I thought I would ask it here, in hopes some one could shed some light on this (no pun intended).

Well as you could see on my picture above your post, the place where the flash button should be, is blank.
But figured out why it wouldn't give me the option.
Because I am using EW Jet where Eric has set the product device & product model to X10x. So edited those values to say X10i and now it's working.
Don't know why he chose to call it X10x, as there is probably more apps and tools that needs a correct value to function properly.
But back to the initial question, it still doesn't flash it only activates the light.
I was on Froyo, when I'm on stock firmware I use stock camera app. It works great, altough flash isn't automatic...

It used to work much like a real flash in older versions, as I said earlier, so you could either use one of these, or maybe contact the developers and ask them to sort it out.

But I joke you not, right before the camera settles and finishes its adjustments, I can quickly get a snapshot out that looks like this:
That's freakin amazing! How can I make it stay like that manually? I've been messing with the settings but nothing I do can duplicate it manually.
Is there a solution to this?

Its the camera focus, in first photo it focuses on ur tv, so it drops lighting from everything else to get a clear image of tv image, 2nd photo did not get chance to focus so there is no drop in lighting
This should be the reason

Is there any way to manually manipulate it before the shot to get the desired focus like in the second shot? Because I was in the dark and I think it's damn cool that it saw the surrounding area.
Any camera in auto mode would do this. One trick is to make in focus on something else. Point the camera how you want it but tap the wall in the image. This will tell the camera too focus there instead of the center. You can also shift the camera so it's point at something else, half press the shutter button, keep it half pressed, point the camera back to where you want it, then press the shutter button the rest of the way. Second method may cause the focus (not exposure, which controls the brightness) to be off.

I'll have tried like 5 different camera apps and get the same results. At my daughter's swim practice, the sun sets behind the pool. If I focus, it takes a super dark photo and you can't even see her. So I have to focus on the concrete, and hit the button and instantly aim at the pool. Lol. Then everything is bright and crisp. It's weird. I too tried playing with every setting I could, with no luck.
Sent from my Clean Rom'd HTC Flyer using XDA Premium.
Lol Well it's good to know I'm not alone in this . Guess we'll just have to make due.
It's auto exposure setting for the brightest object in the shot. It is NOT the focus. Focus = blur or no blur. Exposure = brightness. Use my suggestions and it should be much better. Any camera would do this in auto mode.

Themes, appearance does not have anything to do with camera thumbnail
Isn't it?
Did anyone noticed increase in picture clarity with 5MP rather than on 3MP?
It only changes Resolution, correct me if i am wrong.
Let me bump this thread: did anyone find a solution?
Let me summarize everything: I updated to ICS last week (yeah, I waited a lot ) and I found out that when I take photos at 5 MP and then try to view them on my Windows PC the pictures' thumbnails are all screwed up. Here's how they look:
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/102087639/1111.JPG
When I watch the pictures on the phone, however, there's no problem at all. Also, when I upload my pictures on dropbox, I can normally see the thumbnails. It's just a Windows problem. How could I solve this?
Is there some modded capera.apk I could use?
Thanks in advance

When i'm taking a picture outside at night with auto flash / flash on - there is a purple line on the right side (can clearly see at the bottom right of the photo), sometimes on the top of the photo (can clearly seen at the right top - when you put the phone on other side)
anyone notice this thing? there is something to do about it ?
Just to confirm, I've check it without any case, also my finger is not close to the flash...
Also tried at other AOKP 4.0.4 ROM...same results...
Did anyone have this issue? (Only when using flash outside while it dark)
After tried with few camera applications - seems like when I took a photo with lower resolution and lower quality this purple/pink line almost disappears.
again, its happens only when using flash at place with not much details - if im taking a photo (with the same situation) of something with more details or closer to something it won't appear.....
can anyone check it? take a picture of skys at night with flash on (im using the highest quality of photo) and see if you got this purple line at the right side or at the top of the photo....
will appreciate to understand what this problem is...
thanks in advance!
By the way, anyone have an idea how to put a buffer between the lens and flash? to check if its the led flashing into the lens....
Also I would like to know if anyone else notice this thing while taking a photo of dark sky with flash....(eventough its wrong to take a photo like that)
Im sorry for bothering....but Iv'e notice another thing, that maybe discussed before - the PINK SPOT...
notice it while taking a photo while dawning without flash - notice that pink spot in the middle of the screen, tried few ROMS [include stock], few camera apps...same result...notice it only outside while dawn....
There is any fix to this thing? it is a known issue?
heres a photo:
Ok forget the pink spot, seems like its an android patent.
Anyone notice the purple line or can check this (while dark take a pic of sky with auto settings+flash)
Thanks again

Never faced this, try clearing data of camera app.
Go out into normal lighting and you'll see better balance. Maybe if you have a range of colours in low light you'll get a truer colour range. I think this "problem" is due to you tricking the AI by giving it stimulation with such a homogeneous palate.
If you bought a phone to take pics of magnolia walls in dark places, you may have the wrong phone. Otherwise until we see some other pics looking wrong, I think you're probably ok.

That is because this is normal behaviour of the camera hardware and the image processing firmware. If all your photos were coming out like this there would be a problem.
As it stands there's no reason to think there is.
You can get the best phone camera in the world to take a bad photo if you try to trick it like this.
Notice how in the first shot where there are black objects in shot and colours other than magnolia it's not distorted, but in the second where there's no other comparison colour it is? There's no indication here of a problem.

it looks like a white balance problem. install google camera app and correct color by setting white balance to sun. Everytime you have to do that is annoying.
