I want to update my GFs Galaxy S2 and I want to know, which of the data is lost if I update with Samsung KIES. I want all the personal data saved from getting lost. Personal data is like photos, messages, phone call list, whatsapp messages, e.g.
I already had some android phones and some ROMS didn't touch any user data at all, thats why I'm not sure what KIES is going to do and wanted to ask you. Or is there any good backuptool for those things?
thanks!
What ROM you have now and what is KIES offering you? Most of ROMs are nonwipe though. For backup I can recommend Titanium Backup.
Usually the homescreens are reset but thats all thats ever happened to me

I can't tell you yet but i will take a closer look this afternoon! I never used Titanium Backup but I've heard a lot about it. Do I need to root?
Well I lost my whole call logs.
Well I don't need the call logs urgently.
Right now there's Android 2.3.3 with Kernel 2.6.35.7 Build GINGERBREAD.XWKE7 installed and KIES doesn't seem to work on MAC OS X Mountain Lion. So what's the latest update and which data do I lose?
You get the latest software version and NONE of the data is touched.

The latest (Official) update would be ICS, BUT I'm pretty sure the user data from GingerBread is is NOT compatible with ICS; which means that the /data partition will most probably be wiped.
I recommend you root GingerBread and use "Titanium Backup" to backup your apps (SMS's, etc. requires PRO version). If you don't want to buy it you can use "SMS Backup and Restore" and "ES File Explorer" to backup your apps (without data). Remember to backup your backups just in case...
NOTE: I don't use KIES, but CWM.
Hope this helped (in time),

If you update to ICS via Kies nothing is lost. All you data is untouched. But I wouldn't recommend this as you would face problems after a direct Kies update to ICS from GB. I suggest you root, backup all your apps (Titanium Pro is the best app for this), create a Nandroid backup just in case you wanna revert back, factory reset the phone, wipe cache and Dalvik memory and then update to ICS via Kies.
Edit: sorry my bad. You may lose your messages. Contacts can be backed up to ext storage, apps remain untouched.

I am sure that If the upgrade is done via Kies you loose nothing.... Absolutely nothing.
But the problem is your applications may not be stable. It is recommended that you do a factory reset after upgrade.
For backup titanium is the best if you are rooted. If not you can use my backup pro.... A decent application that can back up all sms call logs and apps...
Hope this helps...

I'm a bit surprised you didn't lose anything... I have never updated using KIES though. It probably backs up the necessary data (SMS's, etc.) and just restores it after the update. Would be very useful if such a feature similar to Titanium Backup were introduced in CWM Recovery.
Point 5 in the KIES 'help' menu reads:
"First, data stored on the device will be backed up...in order to avoid the deletion of data in the device during a firmware upgrade."

How would you go about backing up and restoring contacts and texts/mms? Titanium backup shows the contacts and what not but it also says 2.3.6 at the end. I feel like restoring this 2.3.6 onto 4.0.4 might not work.
Also, I'm aware you shouldn't lose anything in the upgrade process but I want to factory reset and erase absolutely everything prior to this upgrade. I run a stock rooted ROM.

Download Siyah 3.5.2.
http://www.gokhanmoral.com/gm/2012/07/29/siyahkernel-s2-v3-5/
Tar for Odin.
Then use this guide.
http://www.androidauthority.com/galaxy-s2-i9100-root-android-4-0-3-ics-xwlpd-88120/
Nevermind it says Cf-root. I flashed my Siyah kernel that way.
After that, flash any rom you want in recovery. Just do a Nandroid backup in recovery and backup apps with Titanium backup from Market!!!
Sent from my Galaxy S2 GT i9100
Don't restore apps after flashing newer ROM, cause your phone will bootloop.
Better create text file and write names of installed apps.
Im not sure why everyone is worried about backing up there apps ive flashed about a 100 roms and never had to back them up cause if u go to the play store under my apps there always there
Infact there are apps there id forgotten about just pick which ones u want and re install .some roms auto instal them for u .make sure you have a google acc obviously!

If you restore from google play, you loose all your app settings and you will have to reconfigure each app.
Also, Google Play will not show apps installed offline (apk)
Restoring app data with third party app like titanium backup is safe if app is compatible with the target rom

in order to install a perticular custom rom , all u have to do is to follow the install instruction's of the same in there OP. and the same applies to all other roms also.
since installation instruction do vary from one custom rom to another

Hi all,
I've been using a nightly build of CM10 for a while now, one of the ones with the memory leak. I'd like to keep on top of the most recent nightly builds on a regular basis, but I hate the process of having to re install all my apps again, losing app data and adding all the sync accounts etc etc.
I was just wondering what process people used for updating to the most recent nightly, if there are any easy ways of doing a simple backup for everything, then just restoring it after the update.
Any information would be appreciated.
Cheers.

I disagree completely, wipe once, if at all.
Twice is completely unnecessary.
Before or after doesn't matter a sh*t as long as you do it before you boot the ROM.
(I've often not wiped anything and its been fine although I'll give best practice advice here.)
Actually with nightlies I don't wipe anything, ever, unless specifically instructed to do so by the dev (new code base or whatever)

Basically its backup all your apps and data from apps u downloaded, like facebook,twitter,etc.. the user apps, system apps, the ones that come with the rom dont ever restore causes problems rom to rom.. after u put the rom on your ext sd card..twrp, go to wipe proced to wipe data factory reset, cache, dalvik cache, install from storage the rom, flash that, then reboot... I personally purchased an app called go backup for all my backups and restore.. it only let's up backup your user apps not system apps so u can't screw up your restore, what I do is backup with go, then flash my new rom, after the new rom is up and running re downldownload go from market and restore from there, all apps are saved dont even have to log into anything again...

Hi!
I was wondering, before I do something stupid , if there's any problem on doing an advanced restore, restoring only data, so I could get my apps, contacts, etc on my just flashed ROM Cyanogen Mod 9, for locked bootloader. I have two nandroid backups, one with the stock ROM ICS 6.1.1.B.1.10, and the other with a custom rom, I think called ZXperience.
So, can I do a data restore easily without messing anything?
Thanks!
