The problem is with ROM manager issues with the latest CM9 the the media scanner not working well. The latest ROM manager adds .nomedia files in media folder which apparently led to your issue.
Browse through your media files and folders using a file manager, delete all .nomedia files you see in any of the folders and reboot.
All should be well after that
If the problem still persists do let me know.

I also have this problem. I recently unrooted my phone and upgraded to ICS 4.0.4
I located several nomedia files; deleted them and then rebooted and it still not working. The only thing that works is putting my files on the external SD. But since it's only 2GB it not enough to hold my movies, music, and pictures.

I've used Root Explorer to search my entire device!

Try using your computer to search for any extra .nomedia files you may have missed.
After that I used kies to transfer some music to my external. rebooted my phone only for everything to be in working order again. The only thing that's not on my phone are my old screen captures from before the upgrade.

You will have to try to things, I'm sure one of them will work.
1. We need to forcing media scanner to rescan your media files.
- search for and download 'rescan media' in Google play.
-open the app and force rescan your media files.
-reboot your device and see if it works.
*** If first solution works, then skip the next solution
2. We will need to mount your SD card in recovery.
- Reboot to recovery.
- mount SD card (under mount)
-fix permissions (under Advanced)
-reboot your phone
-apply solution one

Done that.
The wierd thing is that if I move an audio file to the extrnel sdcard the music apps will find it even if I move it back to the internal storage!
the rescan app acting wired... there is no "start scan" button and once I try to renter the app it auto-close.

This is the final solution I can offer.
You will need your Pc.
Please don't miss any step.
1.
- connect your device to your Pc
- move/cut your media files and folders to a location on your Pc (double check these folders on your Pc to ensure .nomedia files are not present in the folder)
- reboot your device
- If you have ROM manager installed, please uninstall it with titanium and reboot your device.
- Create new folders for your media files using any file manager on your internal SD card. Don't copy anything to them yet.
- Take a picture with your phone, check if it's showing in your gallery.
- reboot your device
- Check again if the pic you took the other time is still showing in your gallery
- Download QUICKPIC from market as a reference gallery app.
- open quickpic and see if the pic you took the other time is also showing there.
If the pic you took is showing in the gallery app, then you can proceed to step 2.
2.
-connect your phone to your Pc
-copy back your media files (don't copy the folders) to the new folders you created on your internal SD card in step 1.
-reboot your device.
-open both gallery app and quickpic to confirm if all of them are showing now.

camera will place it in the default folder.... however, if you download a file manager and create a new folder on the sd card you should be able to move the files from one folder to another and then in the Gallery app it will appear as a separate folder or "gallery". Thats how I have been doing it on my android phones for awhile.

Use an app called SDRescan.. it'll rescan your SD card you and it should fix that.

This. Or go into settings-storage then select unmount sd card and then select mount sd card... That is usually what I do.
did both but still a no go...in astro. where exactly am i supposed to add the folder?
Press the menu button when you are on astro. You should see "create directory". I created a folder called media and placed it in the root of the SD card, then I created sub folders within the folder and placed my videos and pictures in there. Everything worked.
There are a lot of file managers out there.
I've always used AndroZip - they have a free and paid version - and still think it's easier than Astro.
I'm sure it's only because I'm used to it, but it's more "Windowsy" - long press to "right click" and you have a paste button that pops up when something is cut or copied.
The multi-select is easier (imo) than Astro's as well.
Not that downloading a billion different file managers will help, but if you're having trouble...
The only place you CANNOT make the folder...
Is inside ANY folder that has a hidden file in it called .nomedia
If you make a new folder in the root of the SD card, you should be fine. You'll still have to force the Gallery to udpate in order to see them though. Fail safe - power down completely, power back up (probably need to disable fastboot first to be 100% sure, but it should reload the SD card at boot either way).

Hi, Im currently running the 0815 build of CM10 on my p7510 and I am having issues with the media scanner. The scan will not run so none of the music or videos on my tab will index and appear in the music/video player. Anbody else experiencing this problem or is there a fix? thanks.
I have the same problem here.
Take a look in the root directory of /sdcard. If there is a .nomedia file, than it's the ROM Manager bug. Update ROM Manager and run SDrescan from the Play Store.

Yes, erase and check. Also look for the same file in your media folder. Don't forget to set "show" hidden files in your file explorer's settings, as all files with a dot prefix are hidden in Linux and, as a result, in android

Thank you gokpog I did a full wipe and back to honeycomb then install ROM manager, flash clockwork mod and then everything fine, thank you very much.
Thanks for the help, got it sorted. deleted the .nomedia file, updated Rom Manager and did the SDrescan but it still didn'd work so I did a factory reset from the CWM Recovery and thats sorted it. Thanks again.
[SOLUTION] PHOTOS/MUSIC/MEDIA FILES MISSING AFTER FLASHING A NEW ROM (CM9 based ROMS/ CM10 based ROMS/ AOKP ROMS/Stock based ROMS)
Why open this thread?
-Many people have been reported this issues already and the worst thing is that new threads are opened asking for the same solution.
-Only yesterday, I fixed this same problem for about 5-6 people
-I believe having this kind of thread will prevent forum/android beginners from opening a new thread, asking for the same solution over and over again
Symptoms?
-Photos missing from gallery app after flashing new ROM
-Music files missing or unplayable after flashing new ROM
-All media files on internal SD, External SD or both are missing or unplayable
How will I know if this solution will work for me?
-Browse through your device using a file manager/browser, If you can see your photos (DCIM), music files in their respective locations, then this solution will work for you
-If you still can't see your media files after the above step, this solution will simply not work for you
What's the cause of this problem?
Personally I've never had this problem but the reason could be:
-Media scanner skipping your media files for some reason
-corrupt media scanner db
Some users I've helped have also attributed the cause of this problem to:
-Incompatibility/Issues with latest update of ROM manager
-ROM issues(I disagree)
-Unknown/other reasons
Ok....Enough of the stories, this thread was opened for the solution to the problem not the causes. Let's get to the real deal
REQUIREMENTS
-A good file manager/explorer
-A working brain (just kidding)
SOLUTIONS
STEP I
-If you have ROM manager installed or bundled with your ROM, then please freeze/uninstall it, for now.
STEP II
-Using file explorer/manager or similar apps e.g ES file explorer, Astro, Solid explorer or Root explorer, enable show hidden files and folders in the option of your preferred app. Some of these explorers enable hidden files by default.
STEP III (OPTIONAL)
-If your issue is with missing pictures alone, then you may download "Quickpic" from market as reference gallery app
SOLUTION 1.
we need to retrigger the media scanning process
Manually,
- Go to Setting > Apps> All > Media storage, clear data
- Reboot phoneSOLUTION I
OR
Using an APP
-Download Rescan Media Root from market
-Run the App for some minutes
If this solution does not work for you then try Solution 2.
SOLUTION 2
We need to delete any .nomedia file(s) found in the photo and/or music folder(s)
Manually,
-Use a file manager/explorer to browse through your files on your internal SD.
-Check the root of of internal and external SD, Delete any .nomedia file if present
-Open your picture and music folders e.g. DCIM
-Delete any .nomedia file present in those (above) folders.
-Reboot your device
-Check if problem is solved now
Using an APP
-Download StudioKUMA .nomedia Manager from market
-Open the app, browse through your folder
-Any folder containing .nomedia file will be marked x
-check if any of your picture or music folder as listed as x
-Long click on your desired media folders and select enable media scanning for all of them
-reboot phone
If this solution does not work, then try Solution 1. again
If after repeating Solution 1., things are still not working, try Solution 3.
SOLUTION 3.
You will need a PC. You can also use a file manager/explorer but a PC is recommended
We need force retrigger the media scanning process radically
- connect your device to your Pc
- move/cut your media files and folders to a location on your Pc (double check these folders on your Pc to ensure .nomedia files are not present in the folder)
- reboot your device
- Create new folders for your media files using any file manager on your internal SD card. Don't copy anything to them yet.
- Take a picture with your phone, check if it's showing in your gallery.
- reboot your device
- Check again if the pic you took the other time is still showing in your gallery
-connect your phone to your Pc
-copy back your media files (don't copy the folders) to the new folders you created on your internal SD card (in the first section of solution III).
-reboot your device.
If this solution does not work, then try Solution 1. again

in this case, i'm NOT installed ROM MANAGER before...
this is my step:
1. make sure i don't have .nomedia in pictures folder/music folder or in internal memory or in internal memory/android or in sdcard
2. connect device to pc.... copy DCIM folder to pc...--->just for your backup
3. delete folder DCIM in device
4. disconect device
5. setting-app-media storage-clear data
6. reboot!
give the device time to load your pic/music....
don't worry, that will automaticly make DCIM folder again...,
DONE!!!

When this happened to me, all I had to do was install rescan media root from the play store, run it and all my pics, songs and vids showed up.
And rom manager is not a good combination with the s2 and cwm recovery.. I would not recommend using it.

I know this method too. I should have updated the guide already, but i've been busy lately.
Added more relevant info to the solution
For the people who's images were completely deleted, such as mine. Here is a solution which will help you restore most or all of the images.

I used this to recover almost all of my photo's.
This did not work for me. I used solution 3, after which a couple of my photos reappeared in gallery. But after a reboot, they were gone again. All my photos are in DCIM/camera.

Edit:
-Check the root of your SD card, both internal and external, and delete any .nomedia file you find there.

If your media files are all on your External sD, then try these
1. Goto Setting > Applications > All > Media storage, then clear data.
2. Unmount your External SD, in Settings > Storage, then Remove it from your phone.
3. Reboot phone, leave the phone for about 10 minutes
4. Off your phone, and Reinsert your External SD
5. turn ON the phone, and leave it for about 10 minutes
6. Check gallery for your pictures

A family member has the Galaxy S3 and it is completely stock, non rooted and so on, and i know the phone does not need to be rooted to install apk files.
The problem is that i have copied over the apk file that i want onto his S3 but his phone, no matter what file explorer you use, just will not see the apk files at all, the fines worked fine on my Sensation and DHD and One X, but i just can not get the phone to see the apk files,
any idea's on what is causing the phone to not see the files?

you sure they are named as .apk file and not .zip? you should be able to see the filename without the .apk in myfiles for example (myapp.apk will appear as myapp), you will also have to check allow install from unknown sources in the security menu in settings..
yes its named .apk
i have not changed anything about the apk files from installing them on my other phones as i said, the DHD and the Sensation are both rooted but my One X is not rooted and that was able to see the apk file and install it, i seriously have no idea on why the S3 is not seeing them at all and that is after searching online for info
also i have enabled the use on non-market applications to be installed, but that is no use if the phone cant see the .apk files to install it in the first place
How you transferred the file to GS3? Is the file visible when connected to PC?

getting my files to show hidden files did not work.
what it is that i'm trying to install a game, there is a data folder that has to be transferred onto the phone as well, it goes into the Android\obb folder on the sdcard, i created the folder and copied over the files into the folder, the phone.... using my files, astro or es explorer still will not see that folder i created for the files or the apk file itself that has to be installed for these files to be used.
also i tried it on a friends stock, non-rooted Galaxy S2 and it could see the files and it installed first time with no problems so right now i have no idea on what is going on with the Galaxy S3

when you open astro, it starts off in the SDcard folder... the samsung see's the built in memory as the SDcard.. to see the actual SDcard (the removable one lol) i have to select extSCcard..

i am having a serious problem with my thumbnail data my phone is generating.
its in /sdcard/DCIM/.thumbnail and its growing like hell... when ever i delete it, it regenerates again when i open my camera app...
righit now its size is about 745mb and the size of my pics is not more than 200mb.
can't figure it out whats the problem.... i've tried all the solutions given on the forum but nothing worked for me...
its eating my memory please help...
i am using ics 4.0.3 xxlpx and siyah kernel v4.1.1...
help me thanx.....!!!!

backup ur DCIM folder on ur pc, then delete the folder DCIM from ur sdcard after that reboot ur phone and see

i did that already once but as soon as i start taking pics it starts building up again and when i have taken couple of photos like 50 or so the thumbnail data builds up to 450mb+ again....

and now it has made 2 thumbnail data files namely:
.thumbdata3--1967290299 746mb and
.thumbdata3-1763508120 770mb

- Delete the .thumbnail files inside DCIM folder and subfolders
- Goto Settings - Apps - All -Media Storage, clear data
- reboot to recovery, wipe cache
- reboot phone, wait for 5 - 10 minutes, then test

i took 2 photos and it made a thumbdata of 125mb again...........
any other suggestion??????

Maybe you have photos somewhere else? And it's creating thumbnails for those as well? No hidden photos in DCIM?

nop.. i dont have any hidden photos in DCIM but i have photos downloaded from zedge and whatsapp......
but still it should not make such huge thumbnail files or should it?????

Same problem here with massive .thumbnail folder found when using Storage Analyzer app.
Problem is when I connect the phone up with usb and browse the .thumbnail folder cant be seen on my PC?????
Win7 with view hidden folder option enabled

When connected up it just says 'connected as media device' only other option is as Camera (ptp)

I'm on Jellybean too and it works flawlessly
1. Goto Settings - Storage , Press menu button, select USB computer connection, enable Mass storage.
If that option is missing in your ROM, then try option 2.
2. Boot to CWM recovery
- select mounts and storage
- connect your phone to your Pc
- select mount USB storage
Your device should now be connected in mass storage mode.

I have an issue with the size of the thumbdata3 file in DCIM/.thumbnails on internal memory (camera is set to store to ext SD) at the moment it is 314MB on internal memory but the thumbdata3 file in the DCIM/.thumbnail folder on ext SD is less than 1MB (I only have around 100 photos and pictures on my phone) - but camera still works (other than in the scenario described below)
If I delete the large thumbdata3 file from internal memory and then attempt to use the camera, the photo is taken without any problem but when I try to view it in either gallery or QuickPic by clicking through from the 'last image taken thumbnail' in the camera and then click back to carry on taking another picture the camera FC's. It usually does this twice and is then absolutely fine - apart from the fact that the large thumbdata3 file has been recreated on internal storage.
I've tried it numerous times and every time the same results - delete thumbdata3 from internal memory, couple of camera FC's, large thumbdata3 file recreated, no more problems (bar the loss of 314MB of storage)
I've tried replacing the thumbdata3 file on internal memory with a copy of the smaller one from Ext SD, creating a blank thumbdata3 file and setting it as read only/no write permission and neither have helped.
Its a bit weird and annoying but I won't let it take the shine off my fun with CM9, however it would be nice to recover that large chunk of storage space to be put to better use.

Hi - haven't full troubleshooted this issue yet, but see my notes here. I have the same issue (GNEX JB 4.1.1 stock) and for me it is caused by the app KeepSafe which hides/unhides pics/videos on your phone. Note I believe this is an interaction issue between this app and the media scanning functionality in JB (and I suspect ICS), and so there are likely other apps that have the same issue. For me it creates 1 or 2 .thumbdata3 db files each around 1.3GB.
Certainly, irrespective of app causing it, you can follow the steps to purge Gallery and Media Storage, resync your gmail account and they should disappear on their own. Opening the camera and taking a photo causes the db to come back at around 400MB with a single thumbnail - one of the test files I was hiding and unhiding with KeepSafe but has since been deleted. Can't really explain this behaviour!
Any way, I made some notes on what I tested, the results and some ponderings in case this helps someone work it out:
Thumbdata3
Hiding in keep safe seems to create both the thumbnails and thumbdata file.
Clearing data/cache for gallery and media storage removes all these files? So far doesn't seem to be the case. File and db still there after. Rerunning the media scanner now. Perhaps they caused it? Also forced resync of all items in gmail account. Thumbs and db now gone. Not clear if it was the media scanning completing or the re-sync, but steps to resolve issue now appear deterministic.
Tested with single pic. Restored. No thumbs. Re-hid, thumbnail appeared for this pic and a 435MB db file.
All thumbs were for pics hidden in keep safe. However previously there were far more thumbs. Speculate - cumulative issue thru successive hide/restore cycles, possibly due to file name collision avoidance.
Deleting pic in file explorer also causes the problem? Does not appear to be the case. Gallery/Media Scanner/Media Storage handles this manual intervention far better under ICS/JB. Previously, manually removing a picture rather than deleting it thru Gallery tended to mean the tile/thumb remained. Scanner didn't or didn't very effectively detect this. Probable algorithm change in ICS. Now it sees the deletion immediately. Possibly implicated in keep safe not correctly interacting with the gallery/media scanner properly under ICS/JB.

Issue 39546: Files under DCIM/.thumbnails are eating away at SD card storage
have since done factory restore with formatting the stock SD. File is there, much smaller though 197 KB. No pictures to thumbnail, so it isn't necessarily solved. I did switch out cards (old 16GB to stock 4GB) before format and delete the .thumbnail file but that was recreated even with no pictures. I figured it may be my picasa account, but have since opened gallery. After letting more (from Picasa) picture and folder thumbnails appear than ever before my file is still small

it still has not grown giant. I didn't disable any of TMobile bloat like I did initially, and have the blank SD. In the process of reinstalling apps reopening gallery and checking space with storage analyzer.
I still don't like not being able to choose internal USB or external storage SD. Most apps "moved to SD card" just move to USB storage. Interestingly tapatalk appeared to move to the real external SD card as did a few others.
I doubt this will be fixed on ICS. I can hope though. It seems like the app itself needs to use the external SD directory, but the stock gallery might never be updated.
Samsung galaxy blaze 4G with stock ICS 4.0.4. All the extra TMobile apps are a pre-installed, but not updated.
I don't claim to be knowledgeable enough to know what I don't know. I always reserve the right to be wrong.

Hi, i'm having a similar problem with my galaxy s3, i9300, 4.1.2 rooted.
within astro file manager i have 2 files inside storage/sdcard0/DCIM/.thumbnails folder which are taking up 6.5gb of phone storage space.
No idea why they are so big.
.thumbdata3--1967290299 (file size 4.29gb)
.thumbdata3-1763508120 (file size 2.26gb)
People have suggested deleting these files, however having only had the phone for 3 weeks, i'm reluctant to start deleting files i know nothing about.
So i want to back them up before i delete, but the file is not visibale when connected to pc, so cannot back them up.
Apparently with the galaxy s3 they have removed the ability to plug it into pc as a mass storage device, so the folder .thumbnails is unaccessable.
Can someone please tell me why these 2 files have got so big and how do i access the folder .thumbnails via pc.

in astro file manager i have a folder called storage/sdcard0/.aptoide/apks, which is taking up 1.5gb.
I'm assuming they are the apk files for everything i've downloaded off aptoide, are these files still needed or are they ok to delete, like other apks can be deleted once installed.
Anyones help on these issues would be great, but i've only had an android phone for 3 weeks so be gentle with me.lol.
