8 gb Nook Tablet, have an SD card, using a Mac. Could someone point me towards a thread with what I'd need to root? Search has been fruitless so far.
Hi,
From what I've read this worked for NT owners who got upgraded to 1.4.3.

I don't know of a specific thread for root sdcard on mac. If you choose a link such as the other poster mentioned and tell me which link and mac era you are using I'll try to sort it out for you (I won't be able to work on it till Sunday). Sorry for the delay. Other wise if you have a specific question about mac I'll try that sooner.

I finished early and even though you have not responded I decided to give you mac (intel) instructions for the link previously posted.
What I present takes place of 1 – 5 of the first numbered series of directions. I have not used this card. I only downloaded and made the sdcard and wrote the instructions. Any questions about use of the card should be to the op of the thread you downloaded the file from (this should not be necessary as directions and a video are provided in op). These are generic instructions that apply to writing an img file to sdcard or drive. There are other commands that accomplish the same thing.
Download file in thread. SD_ROOT_NT16or8gbV4_7.zip
open Downloads and unzip above file to new directory. If you haven't changed defaults just double click zip file and Archive Utility will create the directory for you.
Run terminal.app (Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app). Nook should not be tethered to mac or the sdcard plugged in. In terminal Type cd ~/Downloads/SD_ROOT_NT16or8gbV4_7
SD_ROOT_NT16or8gbV4_7 is assumed to be your new directory made from the zip
This places you in the directory just made. The only file we care about is NT16or8gbV47SDimagefile.img which is the file we will write to the sdcard.
Type -diskutil list
this gives you a list of drives and partitions for your mac before we plug in the sdcard. Plug in sdcard.
Type – diskutil list
note the additions to the previous list. This is your sdcard designation. Example: /dev/disk1 is my sdcard – yours may differ.
Type – diskutil unmountDisk /dev/disk1 -substitute your sdcard designation in place of disk1
Type – dd if=NT16or8gbV47SDimagefile.img of=/dev/disk1 bs=1m -substitute your sdcard designation in place of disk1
Once this finishes you are done. Type – quit and close terminal. Right click your new sdcard mounted on your computer and choose eject.
Follow directions in op of link where you downloaded image file.
Good Luck!

adeadhead, can you let me know if this works for your nook tablet 8g 1.4.3
The sdcard method works for both 16GB and 8GB devices, on any version.
Could you help me understand the process?

I don't have any experience rooting devices. I have always been skeptical, even paranoid, about the negative effects. Would you explain the step-by-step instructions to me for rooting my Nook Color running 1.4.3? I've decided that this is the least expensive and most out-of-date device that is readily available to me, and it would be good to start learning on...

I am trying to get my viewsonic g tab back to factory. I installed the APX driver ok, and downloaded the applicable files. I try to run the nvflash_gtablet.bat script and it comes up with a file configuration error that the file can't be found. I am running windows 7. Any suggestions?
i have never done nvflash and never got brick and loaded multiple roms and went on dif dev branches
this is for 1.1
http://tapntap.http.internapcdn.net/tapntap/viewsonic/update-smb_a1002-3588-user.zip
and this is for 1.2
http://tapntap.http.internapcdn.net/tapntap/viewsonic/update-smb_a1002-4349-user.zip
rename the zip file to "update.zip"
hopefully you partioned your tab before nvflashing it. if not then please ignore this.
put update.zip in root of your sd card.
create a folder named "recovery" and place an empty file named command with this text inside
Code:
--update_package=SDCARD:/update.zip
then go into recovery and let it update.
hope i helped somewhat
ps to make files in win 7. i open notepad and paste code then save a command.tmp then i go and delete tmp. it leaves it as a file. and works

h i because you didn't have the image files to flash into. This is probably the most common mistake that beginners make.
Go to my website linked in my signature and go to the start here page. You're probably a code yellow.
I flashed pudding on my 1.83 ATT atrix. This worked fine, and I am trying to get CWM for unlocked bootloaders now. I am following the instructions directly from the thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138541
Problem is, after extracting the zip to C: and running "fastboot flash recovery C:\(image name).img", I get "fastboot is not recognized as an internal or external command..."
This leads me to believe that I don't have adb set up properly. I have standard adb set up for pushing apk's, but am I missing something specific for fastboot?
All i have under android-sdk-windows>platform-tools is adb.exe adbwinapi.dll and adbwinusbapi.dll. I DO have USB debugging on lol.
I seem to remember having more stuff under platform tools at an earlier date. All the threads for setting up adb are LONG buried, and after exhaustive searching, I finally gave up and decided to post (at least not in dev ). Even turning to google for adb help, I only get a bunch of the ad-farming tip websites that are outdated.
Please help me out guys. I can usually help myself after enough research, but I admit defeat on this one :/
Thanks much,
-omni

If your on linux it's "./moto-fastboot" not just fastboot.
Windows 7 64 bit. sorry, should have specified.
Nobody with win 7 knowledge/advice?
Alrighty, let us see here...
Try this.
1: Create a folder named fastboot (or whatever you prefer, just something simple like that) on the root of your C drive.
2: Download this file, http://www.mediafire.com/?yl17mz8l7w9h687
3: Unzip contents of said file into the folder you created in step 1
4: Click on Start, type cmd into the bar at the bottom and hit enter
5: Type cd C:\fastboot (or whatever you named the folder in step one)
6: Type moto-fastboot flash recovery recovery-en-goapk-0630-1029.img
That should work. The recovery included in the flash is current AS OF THIS POST. Obviously, the instructions will change if you download a newer copy of CWM as they are released, since the filename of the recovery file will change.
If you are wondering why it is moto-fastboot, the fastboot I included is the modified one that allows for larger img flashing. Not particularly useful anymore, with CWM working well now and all... but hey.

Thanks SO much for the quick response and all the effort I'd actually updating OTA from 1.26 because I flashed back, thinking no one was gonna help! Well, when I feel up to it another night. I'll give this another shot. Thanks for the custom fastboot, too!
i get < waiting for device >
did i do something wrong?
Me too. ^^^^^^^
I figured it out, i forgot to put it into fastboot mode!
did not work for me
when I do what you told the other guy it says system cant find the path specified couls you please help I have spent a couple of days trying different things and also when I try to erase the recovery installer file it want let me
I posted this on the fool proof thread for going from 3588 to 4349. Having troubles and looking for help.
NVFlash confuses me.
I basically just want to install a good 1.2 based ROM and stick with it. Have no intention of going back top 3588.
How do i make it so that if i ever do brick the device or have a need to go back, it just starts as if 4349 is my starting point?
My problems using the foolproof method is that the external SD card i purchased an loaded the necessary files to was not recognized when i followed the choose sdcard/update from sdcard instruction. I am thinking it might be looking for internal SD card as i definitely put the files on it and partioned per intructions...
Anyway, did work or i messed up somehow - looking for alternatives.
Thanks
Okay...I located the file from one of Robeet's threads.
New/additional question to any who view and have know-how/skills:
In his thread he mentions to flash to 4349 DO NOT use CWM. Well, that was teh first thing i did - install CWM.
How do i go about uninstalling?
I also noticed mybe some of my earlier troubles were in that my command file was created in notepad (he warns against file extensions).

You can still use CWM to flash the stock firmware from teh source he provides. Let me guess, his file is a rar file, when unzipped, you are left with a file called "update.zip" and a folder called "recovery" with a command file in it.
What this is, is the format used to flash something using stock recovery. If you do not have CWM, you'd turn on your tablet, holding +, and it will "see" the recovery file, which will let it know to run the update.zip file.
Since you HAVE CWM, all you need to do is "install zip from SD" and install the update.zip file, just like you would any other rom.
to keep it organized, I suggest you rename it 4349.zip, or stockfirmware.zip, etc.
but yeah, it's completely possible to do it through CWM
as for the "command" file, yes, if it's created in notepad on a windows machine, it will be command.txt. you can't have the .txt part. I use notepad++ to creat files without extensions. You can also do it on the tablet using ES file explorer, root explorer, etc...
Thanks so much for replying!!
Let me ask you or anyone else who knows - When you write "install zip from SD" are you referring to the external or internal?
One more possibly one of the silliest questions that can be asked: How do you move files from one drive to another on this device? I was toying around last night with teh file explorer program and honestlt could not figure it out. I do not use a mouse or anything - normally i would cut/copy and paste teh file to desired location.
Please Help. Thanks again!
SD is generally the internal, MICROSD or SDCARD2 is the external.
Re: The windows notepad. If you want to save a file without the .txt extension or to change the extension simply Save As and put quotes around the name.
I got a nook tablet recently, i registerested it already which i understand you have to do... now i want to backup everything and run regular android as in not B&N version. Im not sure which way to go from here, i see there is an sd option and a regular option?
i was reading this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1439630
as i was getting ready to do it, i started to double think if it was what i wanted.
i want to be able to run the latest android rom possible.
appreciate any help, thanks.
The process you are linking to is very simple and "safe". With the card you create you can startup CWM (ClockWorkMod - utility for flashing and backup and more) and not only root your device, but also make a backup, should you want to go back to where you were prior to flashing whwaever you decide to flash.
The rooting alone lets you install apps from other sources than BN. I think rooted stock tweaked a bit isn't too bad to run actually!
To try out other options completely risk free you can run CM10 (ICS) from an sd card. I do that while I wait for CM10 to be more stable/bug free. It runs incredibly well from sd, and I doubt performance will be greatly enhanced onec I install it internally (as I probably will do at som point.
To run from sd card you don't have to root the device unless you want to.
Great guides for making a sd-card are here and there. For example http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2012/11/18/cm10-0-jellybean-sdcard-img-for-nook-tablet/
The first thing I would suggest is to make a bootable recovery SD card using the process and files from here (use the MLO_u-boot_flashing-boot.rar and one of the packages with sdcard.zip suffix), and backup your current stock config and safely save/archive the backup folder -- you'll be glad you have it around one of these days. Make sure that you also keep a copy of whichever recovery program version you choose to use together with the backup folder, since different recovery programs and versions use different backup file archive formats.
If you want to root the NT I would recommend using the update.zip referenced in this post (by liquidzoo) which is more up-to-date than the rooting package you saw (I had used the latter version and had problem updating its Google Store app). Just put this zip package on the same recovery SD card and use the recovery program to install it.
Having tried out the rooted form of the NT for about a week I think it's just marginally better than a stock NT -- there are just so many common apps that are no longer available for the NT's Android version. You would be much better of investing time in going full-fledge CM10, either running off an SD or natively. If you choose to go native CM10 you can revert back to stock using the backup discussed above.
Can you please verify if I am doing the correct thing
@digimax,
I just got my Nook Tablet today, so just wanted to be very clear to make the backup of the current stock config. Here's what I propose to do. Please correct me if I am doing anything wrong.
1) As per you post, I downloaded 3 files
a) MLO_u-boot_flashing-boot.rar,
b) CM9-10_CWM_V6.0.1.2_8-16gb_tools_sdcard.zip,
c) CM9-10_TWRP_v2.2.2.0_8-16gb_tools_sdcard.zip
2) Unzip all the above 3 files
3) Rename the CWM file to recovery.img
4) Rename the TWRP file to altboot.img
5) Copy recovery.img and altboot.img and MLO, flashing_boot.img and u-boot.bin to the root of the SDCard.
6) Insert the SDCard into the Nook Tablet and boot the Nook into one of the recovery and make a backup.
Please let me know if this is the correct procedure.
Thanks!
It looks right, make sure that your boot partition is Primary FAT32 (type 0x0C) with LBA and Active flags set (you can check and set all this using a partition management tool such as MiniToolPartition).
Also, to boot into SD: just turn off the NT and insert a powered-USB cable, and the NT will boot up after a few seconds (assuming that the SD is bootable).
Once CyanoBoot comes up, hold the "N" button to get the boot menu from which you can select one of the two recovery programs.
a lot of this is going way over my head, i need to make sure i go slow and read carefully.
thanks for all the info.

Remember that you can make CM10 run totally risk free from am SD-card. That way you can have a smooth running device to explore while you keep reading up on diffrent options. That's what I do! The Tablet doesn't even have to be rooted to do this (mine is though).

This is the website I used:
http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2012/11/18/cm10-0-jellybean-sdcard-img-for-nook-tablet/
Look through the comment sections for further clarity on the process.
If that is beyond you, then I suggest getting a pre-made image for the size of SDCard you have and burning your own image. Google AndroidforNook or N2A for the website links.

Here's my sugestion ...delete what you have on sdcard for the root process..put the zipped file on the root of your sdcard... Download a zip extractor app(free on play store) use it to extract the zipped root file straight onto your sdcards root dont change anything then follow the instructions from there in the emulator.
I answered this in the General forum "all things ME7" thread.
The problem is that when the root zip file was unzipped, all of the files were extracted to the root directory.
You need to unzip and create the proper folder structure on the sd card - then it'll work.
