Anyone having stuck/dead pixels? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

A couple of days ago, i discovered that I have one pixel that is stuck or frozen. It's a very noticeable red spot, which is easy to see on light backgrounds.
I have tried to download pixel-fixer-apps from Play, but none worked after i ran them for 30 minutes.
Is the only solution to get a replacement phone?

Yep, this new i'd be sending it back for an exchange

Before you try anything stupid, there is an LCD-testing program built in to any and every Samsung-branded device, open it by typing
Code:
*#0*#
in the dialer-pad.
Then test your screen, if you still experience those problems, try booting the device into recovery, it may just be a problem with Android, if the problem is still noticable in Odin/Download and/or recovery mode, then get a replacement, if not, try flashing a new ROM.. It doesn't have to be custom...
I personally have never experienced such failures of device screens, I've seen touch-screens not sensing touches, I've seen screens go black, out of nowhere, but I've never, really, never heard of a dead pixel on a HD super Amoled, or Amoled at all, in fact...
I wish good luck in finding out what it is!

Thanks for the replies!
I've done some research, and tried different types of troubleshooting. The dot is still visible while testing with the samsung-code, and it's there in recovery/download mode. I've reset and installed different types of roms, customs, stock, and different kernels, without any change. I think I'm just going to send it back. Triangle Away and flashing a stock rom worked flawlessly

OLED screens don't suffer from pixel death. There might be some "lazy" pixels but the pixels don't just die on OLED screens.

I had one if I used a black wallpaper for a long period of time so I just switched to a colorful wallpaper and it went away over time.

Okay, thanks! Maybe I should try that first.
Any idea how long it took?

I'm also having this problem the past few days, blue pixel in the centre of the screen.
Tried the solutions mentioned here and on other forums but no luck yet

Fast vertical lines on screen wake up

people, has anyone of you noticed white vertical lines that appear for a fraction of a second when you power on the device? it happens right before lock screen appears... best could be seen in a dark... seems like there is a problem with screen initialization on a driver level...
Could someone check this issue?
Using Lightning ROM 1.5
Sounds like your phone is defective.

i prefer to be more optimistic due to the fact that many others reported the same problem on different forum... xda is more reliable, so I'm trying to collect the opinions here as well
Mine has this, noticed it for the first time yesterday (hadn't seen any reports of this at that time).

don't worry, I think this effect is present on every piece of 9100. more or less obvious for users... it might be not vertical lines that people see but the quick white flash

What effect does this have on any other aspect of the phone, or is it literally only that fraction of a second that there is any apparent effect?

if it is really a problem of display controller low-level driver - it might cause some serious problems as time passes... total screen failure, for instance... as i remember from past cell phones - it was the first sign of upcoming screen death...
but i think that in our case - this is just a minor driver issue in screen initialization process... at least i believe so
I have this problem with the screen as well! and it's annoying to see those vertical lines whenever I wake up the screen.
sometime i can see the lines with "CRT Screen Off" mod, but without they dont appear
Try to do a backup in CW recovery and flash a stock rom.
It can be the CRT effect or any other custom rom issue.
It would be great to know if the problem is due to your custom rom or not.
Hey, sorry to bring this up again, but I'm having the same problem, and it's really bothering me. If there's any way of fixing it, please let me know, I just uploaded the stock ICS 4.0.3 for my device, and it started to show.
mine too has this
Mine also has this issue. only visible in the dark
yeah, same here. I thought i was the only one having this

Noticed this straight away when I got my new phone and it was there before I flashed a custom anything
***Bezeke HOLO LPQ base running bits stuff from everywhere ***
I also have this issue
One large, white vertical line. Clearly visible in all lighting conditions
However sometimes (rarely) it doesn't do it.
I have compared this to a black galaxy s2 (mines white) which doesn't suffer from this issue. It actually seems to delay the screen on / unlock time
The black loads the lockscreen at almost the exact same time as the white displays the lines.
I've been putting off returning it under warranty as I can't do without it..
Its like a jolt of power that hits the screen
***Bezeke HOLO LPQ base running bits stuff from everywhere ***
yeah, i recently got a phone off someone, and it's been bothering me since, there's no way of fixing it? i hope it hasn't caused anyone trouble, i recently switched to iPhone to this phone and i'm absolutely loving it besides the white flash

If you mean the minute, almost "patterned" grey lines then yes. Every Galaxy S2 has theses.
But bright white, clearly visible line/s which delay the screen-on process.. No, not every Galaxy S2 has it.
Especially if they don't always appear
i don't think its an issue with the phone i had it running an old version of omega rom the latest 5.1 does'nt have that problem.

[Q] Stuck pixel, would you return it?

i have one stuck blue pixel in lower half of the screen,
do you think i should return it?
or can i for only one?
does anyone else have any stuck pixels?
i can live with it but its annoying knowing its there!
If you can, then I don't see what's stopping you.
I returned an N73 with a dead pixel and i'd do it again without hesitation.
To be exact, LED-screens (including OLED) don't have stuck (sub)pixels since there are no moving parts.
Only LCD's can have stuck pixels.

Serious question then:
Yesterday I had what appeared to be a dead or stuck pixel. It was extremely annoying and after running a dead pixel test, I rebooted it and it was gone a few minutes later. What was it?
surely if it was dead it wouldnt be blue?

I don't know, the guy above me just said pixels can't get stuck on OLED, so now I"m confused.
Return it for an exchange...
It would kill me to have something so small ruin a great screen.

i bought mine from Argos, i hate the pink tint on the front camera and the ink marks were in some bad areas on the phone, im getting my 4th S3 tomorrow. I hope i dont get ink marks (big long thick ones) in the middle of the screen. YES I SAID 4th Galaxy S3 replacement. best thing about Argos is, they send someone to pick it up from your house and the guy gives you the new replacement.

"Dead Pixel Detect and Fix". I let it run for a few minutes then when it looked a little smaller I rebooted and it was gone.
tried that for over 30 mins, ive got one stuck pixel so it cant get smaller its either there or its not
No idea then sorry, mine looked to be two or three consecutive. The app lowered that down to about one and then I rebooted and it was gone.
Defenitly exchange it!

Stuck/Dead Pixel

Hey guys,
in the last couple of days I noticed that there are quite a few 30-50 dead or at least stuck pixels on my screen. It really bugs me, because I'm kind of a perfectionist. They are all in the same color. It's a light grey or white. Due to that they're only visible on black surfaces.
Is there anything I could do about this? I already tried to run a stuck pixel fixer, but nothing changed. Ran it about 10 hours. Is the warrenty covering this? My phone is unlocked btw.
Hope you guys can help me. Thank you!

Basicaly Yes, because you had more pixels than the minimum requirement for most of brand or trademark
but you must notice two thinks, first the phone must never to be drop or schoked or any trace about user damage.
Second one, Normaly the phone lost all waranty if you unlock it but normaly if you put the phone with the stock recovery , stock rom and lock again the bootloader, that should be ok for the technical support.
Same here matey, allot of dead pixels around the vertical edges of the phone. I had it checked out and people tell me it's dust. I did get a nod from HTC to send it in for repair. It's covered by warranty

Dead Pixels on the screen

So after month of owning this phone (SD version), yesterday I noticed that there was green pixel on dark backround. After a while of looking at black picture with max brightness, I noticed several small red-blue-green dots all over the screen, which weren't visible on other backrounds. I have already sent it to repair centre (free screen replacement). I just wanted to ask, is it frequent problem with RN3 or I was just unlucky? Is there any side effects of replacing the screen?
I'm using this device for about 6 months now and i haven't seen even one dead pixel in my phone till now, but I haven't noticed even one dead pixel on the screen till now...
So, I guess you were unlucky and your device had this problem...

I have rn3 sd version.
and I noticed 3-4 dead pixels on the screen
it cannot be seen on regular usage. hardly can be noticed when lcd test (dark screen full brightness)
I think many rn3 phones have same problem. many users just have not noticed yet.
it's common and expected, for the price you won't get the best panel, i also have 2 stuck pixels, one green and one red
Yeah I got one too and maybe 2-3 more...but not visible in normal usage.
Happened after like 5-6 months.
hmm, it seems that many are having stuck pixels, mine just had too many and it's free screen replacement anyway, so Thanks for replies guys.
I bought it from china so hope it works well long enough...its not an option to send it back

I couldn't spot any dead pixel on my phone....
I guess I'm the lucky one then:fingers-crossed:
Some of my friends have the same device and they also don't have any dead pixels...
Well, see if your replacement panel also have the same issue...
Edit: I don't think that's a kernel bug as many users including me are on Radon and none of them reported this issue...
I have a unusual red fingerprint that barely visible on the bottom part of my screen.
You can only see it on still black screens and you will have to look carefully to see it.
It is a comment problem to LCD screen my all phones have dead pixel except Redmi note 3

Yeah, I'm pretty sure thats not kernel related (I haven't flashed any custom kernels anyway). I hope replacement screen will be good.
I had a orizontal green line at bottom only on miui.
On aosp doesnt exist.
My phone has several blue and green patch, when I purchased never noticed it till 1 month. After that I got screen replacement when I visited service center, Now my phone creeks.. If grabbed hard its back panel creeks.
I don't blame, Its a cheap company and cheap phone. But performance is good.

Creaking is actually common on RN3. Althought mine didn't (well, I was using a silicon case) and I don't think screen replacement did that, unless service center did a bad job at it.

Actually back panel is rubber glued. (The speaker and upper panel) I think when they open up phone, for screen, they removed rubber glue, so now it creeks against plastic..

[HELP] Screen leftovers from other apps, (lcd image burn)?

So recently my phone has ghost images, leftovers from other apps on the screen. (eg. The top bar showing up ghostly when it shouldn't, controls of a game showing up on home screen after closing the game in a ghostly effect) It is not a software problem. I know it goes away on its own after some time, but it's very annoying and its freaking me out. Anyone else got this problem? How do I fix/prevent it
i got it to.not know hot to fix it
Very disappointed from xperia screen
I have also the same problem and it looks like a hardware issue. It's very noticeable when you increase the screen brightness. Notification bar icons/time appear all time against any dark background. Very annoying, even cheap phones don't have that problem.
Example I found online -> lnv.i.lithium.com/t5/image/serverpage/image-id/79782iF19656F933D1C741

Yes, thats exactly my problem. I noticed that it gets worse if the device is overheating
Sorry for the bump, but is any else having the same issue?
Mine seems to be getting worse and worse over time, to a point that it can literally retain half way up the display.
I use to have the same issue with my iPad Mini Retina until I took it in for a replacement and it hasn't happened since (2 years ago).
Any experiences with Sony replacing the display under warranty?
Thanks,

running completely stock & unrooted. Mine has this problem too. However, the image disappear after 10-20 minutes :|
I had this problem on my unit as well. Tried to adjust the white balance and it seems the issue was barely noticeable on the status and navigation bars.
The good thing is that screen retention falls under manufacturing defect and you will get a new screen.
Mine got replaced with a brand, spanking new one, but the issue has started to creep in just a little bit after a few months, but its very faint.
