Yea, but my PC is all set up and it'll take ages to set it up again.
Especially because I have 20kb/s internet connection

Has anybody tried this for the Ray?
I'm on the .62 firmware on GB and would like ICS but don't really want to use the test point method to unlock the bootloader and given up on Sony releasing the update for my phone in the UK as my SI number is not listed.

You don't need to unlock anything to flash stock kernels. You can flash an ics ftf over your gb install.

Thanks for that, I'm presuming that will void my warranty.
I'm a bit of a noob to the Ray, but do like the phone, can you explain what to do or point me in the direction of a link as I'm a bit overawed with some of the posts and obviously concrned I end up with a brick.
I have previously rooted and flashed custom roms on my old phone and asus tablet but that was easy compared to this.

Rooting need not void your warranty as you always just flash a stock build and no one would know. The routing procedure does seem overly complicated on se devices but depending on your build can take less than a minute once you have everything in place. The latest ics build is very good IMO. I'm pretty sure all you need to do is download the ftf, the android sdk and flash tools and you can have ics on your phone in minutes.

[ROM] Xperia U (ST25i)_GB 2.3.7 Build 6.0.B.3.184 (Stock Indian firmware)

Hallo everyone. I just created a ftf from update files downloaded by SUS. This is the stock Indian GB 2.3.7 ROM (Build 6.0.B.3.184) from sony. I created this to keep a GB rom backup ready before upgrading to ICS, just in case I feel like going back
Thought I would share it with everyone in case someone needed it.
It was confirmed to be ok and working.

It's world generic.

Thanks! It may be useful for ppl in the future.
By world generic, u mean every country or region would be able to install this without restriction?
I heard this stock version is the best, though, I think custom rom is better.
Believe me, you don't need these extra apps. Worst case, you can download some of it manually

Guys, I installed this stock rom onto my xperia u. But now it is stuck on the SONY XPERIA Logo, which goes blank and keeps blinking the same again and again.
I am unable to re-flash as the flashtool is not recognising the phone in flashmode (holding volume down button) and plugging USB Cable.
Please help to unbrick my phone.
Thanks in advance.
I'm from the Philippines I flash this stock kernel, my question is when every time I send a message to my friend my number has additional number, ex. Our country code is +63 then followed by a ten digit number, like +639104884645 but when I flash this Rom my number has this additional number like this 28146390104884645 it has additional 4 digit number.

[P][ROOT][.54 update] Easy Rooting Xperia P Without Downgrade

Hi,
I bought New Xperia P and i upgraded it with 4.0.4 latest frimware,I tried so many Tutorials for root but i didnt get root access to my phone so i found new method for rooting.
Its easy just follow the below steps
Note: This method is for 6.1.1.B.1.54 update
1. Download Xperia P LT22_6.1.B.0.599_Kernel.zip file attached below.
2. Flash .559 kernel via Flashtool. and start your device (Enable Usb debugging Mode)
3. Download Root with Restore by Bin4ry v18 attached below.

5. Double click the RunMe.bat and follow instructions!
(Xperia phones = Normal mode)
6. Download Xperia P LT22_6.1.1.B.1.54_Kernel.zip file attached below.
7. Flash .54 kernel via Flashtool.
8. Reboot,check for superuser app & enjoy.
DOWNLOADS:
Xperia P LT22_6.1.B.0.599_Kernel.zip
Xperia P LT22_6.1.1.B.1.54_Kernel.zip
Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v18: Click
Thanks to naruto20007 & neoxx3m for kernel files.
Thanks to Bin4ry for Rooting tool
Thanks man i rooted my device with ease by ur steps
...but the steps you detailed are *exactly* downgrading the kernel, rooting that, and then flashing the new kernel back—pretty much the very steps everyone would have done since the .54 update. How is this 'Without Downgrade'?

There is already a thread in the dev section abt this same process....

You are a savior...I tried different method as shared on xda forums and still failed to root my Xperia....and now with the help of your post I finally rooted my Xperia P...thanks a lot.
Could you tell me why we had to flash our kernel first to ensure a perfect root....as to the methods mentioned on different threads they say to root the phone first and later flash the ROM or kernel??

Ok. Flashed the version 1.
No Bootloops or Anything.
Booted in to recovery by pressing vol down button on sony screen as directed by thebrainkafka. Touch works the same way as in munjeni's kernel.
But the system update notification still persists, says a new firmware 6.1.1.B.1.54 available.
I was running on Stock Indian 6.1.1.B.1.54 with munjeni's kernel v5 prior flashing this.

No it doesnot require unlocked bootloader.
First select the .ftf you want to flash in flashtool. It will start preparing the files. After 10-15 sec,it will ask you to connect your phone in flashmode.
How to enter flashmode:
Power off your phone.
Connect your phone to PC with volume down button pressed.
It will enter into flashmode.

With unlocked bootloader, you can flash custom kernels. These make your phone fast and smooth and can increase battery life.
You can always root your phone with unlocked bootllader.
And the BIGGEST pros of unlocked bootloader is you can flash "Jelly Bean" which is almost fully functional and stable for daily use.

[Q] backup current kernel on Neo V

Dear all,
I would like to backup the kernel currently installed on this Neo V. I don't see such an option in Flashtool, therefore I'm asking for you help!
The scenario is quite simple: I'm running a stock ICS with root and custom kernel, and I would like to backup everything (kernel + clockworkmod backup), install "Super Jelly Bean rom", and -just in case- be able to roll back to the current system.
Thanks in advance!

There is no use even if u export it to .img.. Because it will the same kernel that you have flashed..
seee.. u cant flash a kernel through Neo V.. it needs a pc/laptop to do that..
but in many of samsung galaxy series phones u can flash kernel.through phone and no need of pc for that.. but that privilege is not there for our xperia devices..
hope you got it now.

While you use a ROM no changes are made in kernel. All changes you do is in your system. So no need to backup a kernel as it will be the same. As much as you recovery is concerned, it is included in the ramdisk of a kernel so re flashing the kernel will have recovery. But just in case you did some changes to kernel, just unpack the ramdisk and edit it accordingly, repack and done! You'll have the required kernel. Flash it anytime you want
Cheers,
AJ
