First be sure there are no spaces when you renamed the file. Then you can check out this post on repairing md5 sum errors. I think they get corrupted when copied from PC to phone.

You have to rename the file back to its original name.

just save as .txt then change the extension to md5 using file explorer or similar.
if you long press on a file in file explorer it should popup with some options. Select rename and change the extension from txt to md5

Question guys. I'm trying to restore a nandroid backup and keep getting the md5 checksum mismatch error. I have a few nandroids that work at the moment. I know this is a stupid question but I thought worth a try. If I replace the files from the nandroid backup that gets the md5 error and move all the files over to a nandroid thats working, is this possible? The only file I won't be replacing is the nandroid.md5 file. I've moved the boot, cache.ext4, data.ext4, system.ext4 files that I would like to restore. Thanks in advance guys!

Actually if you're trying to restore a backup and get that md5 mismatch error it usually means that there is characters in the backup's folder name that it won't recognize, try renaming the backup folder name with no spaces or hyphens, I usually only use letters and numbers with no spaces, try that and it should be ok at that point...
EDIT: Also I don't recommend moving the files into a working backup folder as the md5sum is generated for each specific backup and you could have problems if the md5sum doesn't match the files that they were created for...

Today I wanted to see what the JellyBean for SGS III is like so I made a nandroid backup of my current setup. After playing with JB for a while, I wanted to restore the backup, but I was greeted with an error message.
I've been messing with this the entire F****** day and so far I've isolated the file that is corrupted (it's /system/app/Keystring_factory.apk).
So I need to delete that file from within the archive. The problem is how do I do that? When I try to copy the file to my computer, it hangs on it and says "corrupted file" (tried windows explorer but also total commander). I am able to open the archive on my SGS III using something like ZArchiver, but it doesn't have the option to delete the file from within the archive.
Help?

U can extract cwm with titanium backup or use a file explorer to extract the backup and delete the file then zip it.
But I would flash a new Rom and extract cwm with TB and restore the parts u need with TB.then when all is good make a new backup.
I don't think it's a good idea to restore a corrupted file even if u find the errors
Btw. Fayaab has tweeted that he is going to release a JB for gs3 tomorrow and this should be working
Tried that too, Titanium got stuck at the file. 7-Zip got stuck even when "Testing Archive". I'll write the file off as corrupt. Interestingly enough, the data.ext4.tar is also corrupt. Does this mean it's a time for a new microSD card? Or is it CWM that's writing corrupt files somehow?
Access system files from recovery any use .

First off, don't rename a cmw backup... trust me, if you rename the zip it will cause an md5 mismatch when you try and restore and that always tends to happen when ya need it most.
Second the file you are looking for is either on your SD or your internal storage, the file si called clockworkmod or something like that, inside you will see a file labled backup. Delete as you will, but I always tend to transfer said files onto my pc and title an individual folder for each file, there for eliminated the irritation of md5 mismatch.

You should be able to restore the folder , by booting into recovery , and running a new backup.
This will force place a new backup file to the SD card in the proper location.
If this does not work , or the backup fails to run, you must reflash the recovery using Odin ....g
you are using cwm and not twrp right? if using twrp the backups are in folder named twrp on internal or external which ever one you specified when backing up.
/sdcard/clockworkmod/backup
/sdcard/external_sd/clockworkmod/backup
Are you rooted?
Are you on a stock-based rom and not a CM-based rom?
I backed up my rom with Clockworkmod v6.0.1.4 and when I went to restore it, it said md5 mismatch checksum. I checked in the advance restore options and it shows the default restore format is .DUP instead of .TAR so it saved it in the .dup format. Now, when I went to check up on the folder on my SDCARD it never showed an md5 file because it never created one. I read all of the " 20-second md5 fix " posts and I created an md5 file and made them blank off of a YouTube video and I also installed RapidCRC to attain md5 checksums from the img files in the backup folder to add to the new nandroid md5 file and out in the backup root folder and I even tried the SDCARD root, but to no avail, they all failed and I still get the md5 mismatch error. I have attached pictures that show my folders and files. I need some help on restoring please!
