Hi, I was wondering why our Galaxy's screen reduces brightness before going asleep. If you notice, pressing the power button the display doesn't turn off instantly, but it turns very dull for a brief moment and then it turns off.
Can you tell me why? It is quite annoying. Other phones turn off instantly, like many HTC's I've seen. Does this concern the SA+ screen? Do you know a fix?
Have a nice evening (21.30 here in Italy)
Only just noticed this now.
Why does it bother you?

It does not, I was just wondering.. I'd like to know if it's a software glitch or if it's something about the hardware.
I don't think it's a glitch as I've seen many gs2 do it.

Yes, I meant a firmware/kernel glitch but no one of the roms/kernels I've tried solved this out :\
EDIT: Wrong forum, sorry. Please do move it to Q&A section.
I was decided on getting Galaxy Nexus (dat fast updates + looks), when I've read news about google decision to take SXS for AOSP.
Then I reconsider my decision, and choose Sony device as option (I haven't before, because of Sony, I mean SE past, and their sloppy or never done updates). It's actually 100$ cheaper, so it's advantage too.
I have doubts about its buttons. I haven't got chance to test it yet (but will do). Can you tell me if they are responsive or not ? I currently have Galaxy S, so comparison to it would be nice.
Also, how long battery lasts? Unfortunately gsmarena haven't done their test on blog so I can't compare.
Thanks in advance
Compared to the Galaxy S, the buttons on the XPERIA S are simply unresponsive... it requires some adjusting (swiping instead of pressing) but you'll get used to it.
Accoriding to a test from a Dutch website, under heavy duty it's battery will last about 12 hours. Under normal conditions 30+ is manageable: http://translate.google.nl/translate?twu=1?sl=auto&tl=en&u=tweakers.net/reviews/2592/3/welke-smartphone-doet-het-langst-met-zijn-accu-resultaten-welke-doen-het-het-best.html

honestly. i never understood the fact that Xperia S buttons are unresponsive. I've never had issue with them. most people i know never complained.
then again, everyone press/touch stuff differently
If you need to be precise on the buttons, you want to try them out yourself.
in terms of battery it's alright when you recycle it after 2 weeks (let it die and recharge it to full etc) i usually get 10-12hrs normal daily basis (listening to music, surf, txt, etc)
I've come to the Xperia S from the One X, and yeah technical downgrade, but a like the SXS much more! Though the ui isn't as smooth, mostly thanks to Sony I think, the ui is cooler! Love Sony's launcher, I just hope it gets smoother with an update in the near future..
Now, the buttons! First, they will be a little weird and feel unresponsive, but after a little use they work fine. I have absolutely no issues there..
Battery is far far better them what I'm use to! I've been using my phone for bluetooth music and navigation today, which means Bluetooth on, GPS on and screen on for about 1 hour! And this is without charging.. The day is done and I have 17% left, just checked screen time to be 2.5 hours and up time is 16 hours.
Sidenote: [Edit] My One X would never have been able to do this..

buttons ain't anywhere as good as those on galaxy s, i have both the phones, sliding helps but i can never hit the buttons in landscape mode..u'll get used to it and it ain't a deal breaker
Also, the black levels are a bit of a concern, i mean it's no amoled but it has the worst black levels i'hv seen. I compared it to my lcd tv, an iPhone 4 and even some old Nokia phones, xperia had the worst black levels (coz of white magic i guess). It just bumps you when you are used to seeing an amoled screen, but on the contrary, the sunlight readability is quite good
Battery is decent, but wake locks has been a problem for me so far, but that's just a software glitch

Removed/deactivated unused apps, used Juice Defender Ultimate, automated almost anything I can, set brightness close to 25% (and almost 0 while on dark). Enough battery to last MY day.

You don't have wake locks anymore? Juice defender stopped a lot of stuff (edge ,Wi-Fi, whatsapp) for me and i also deleted a lot of stuff, it lasts a day according to usage but wake locks still occur, it's not like it used to be in my galaxy s in stand by

For example. During night it loses about 7%, from 11 Pm to 6 Pm... But it's been a while I've not paid attention. About Juice Defender, you need to set it up better, so it don't do what you don't want it to do. The first days it always disabled my WiFi when I simply locked the screen. But if you do the right settings on the Advanced option, it will be really good. It claims to save from x1.70 to x2.40...

What is wake lock? When you unlock your phone, you can use it, but screen is all black ? I did happen to me once or twice on Galaxy S, but that's all. Is this a common issue with SXS?
EDIT: This Captcha is so unreadable and annoying arghgh.

wake lock produces battery drain by unnecessarily putting the phone in "awake" mode when it should be in deep sleep. Some of my experiences with miui and the current .58 rom (it gives around 5 hrs of display time but the wake locks are still there)
Has anyone found anyway to change the frequency the LED flashes with notifications? I've searched around and haven't found anything. I tried out a few apps but none seemed to change the power button LED.
Nope, i was fine with it until i saw my gfs gs3 light up like an xmass tree to let her know she got a text message.
Ours works but its pretty lackluster.
The only hope for a faster LED is when the ROMs start coming out that give control of it. And who knows if it'll even have the ability to be changed then. Stuck with a 25 second gap (for now).

25 seconds between flashes!? I've seen a E971 (Rogers variant) flash its front notification led and it was on for about a second off for two.
Can anyone clarify the blinking pattern on the AT&T model please? I'm thinking of getting the AT&T version due to expandable storage...

25 seconds (may)be a little drastic, but no one's really sure why there's such a time difference with the notifications.
Next time you get a text or something, check how often the light around the power button goes off. It's pretty annoying.

Thanks. So is it 25off, 2on, 25off, 2on, etc or is it just an initial 25s?

Its minutes between blinks it feels like.
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda app-developers app
It's definitely just twenty five seconds haha. If your phone is locked during the time you get the notification, the power button will immediately glow red for about two to three seconds, turn off, and the light will come back on in twenty five seconds and so forth.
Sent from my LG-E970 using xda app-developers app
Very much useless compared to other phones I've had. With the long intervals between blinks and short duration of the blink, I almost never notice it. I just periodically hit the power button to see the lock screen rather than try and wait out the indicator light.
It's really only a problem if your phone is on silent and you haven't checked on it every once in awhile.
A theory to negate this minor flaw is to have a repeat notification (sound) feature for when you hear your phone but you're too busy to check it.
I'm not sure if this option is available, and if it's not, maybe it could be suggested to a dev and implemented somewhere.
Sometimes the charging indication stops blinking too at about 80%, although I thought I read somewhere the batteries only really charge to 80% to last longer, so there may be some tweaking that needs done. I like the gradual brightness it does too sort of how the HTC Fusz phones would look like they are breathing when charging.
My SG3 did light up like crazy, but was too bright and only worked with Samsung apps- K9 Email for instance had weird blinking and only blinked in the default color which for a tri-color was a waste. My Atrix HD blinked all the way home from the Activation SMS then never blinked again for the whole week I put up with it then returned it, so I think I can live with 25sec for now. It kind of reminds me of Knight Rider too and I like Red over blue/green.
Yeah my roommate actually has a SG3 and her LED light drives me insane. It's just way too bright, frequent, and distracting. Not exactly a phone you can sit on your desk and just ignore while trying to do something else.
Has anyone tried something like light flow from the play store to see if it can change the interval?
I've been following this phone because I hope to steal my wife's upgrade next month . I haven't fully decided, but I'm really leaning towards the lgog.

It looks like a recent update of the light flow app added nexus 4 support, so that might be useful for the lgog.

I just received my HTC one and found out that when it vibrates (opening the app drawer, typing messages...), it kinda gives a plastic-ish sound. Not a very solid vibration. Unlike my EVO 4G LTE, which has a pretty solid vibration. I was wondering if it's just me or it's my phone that doesn't act normal? Thanks
Same here. At first I thought it was because it was laying on my desk but it does it when I hold it as well. Not a big deal but slightly annoying.
I have the same issue. Its not the hugest deal. Its probably due to the type of vibration motor they use in the device. Coming from an iPhone its definitely noticeable because they use such a quiet motor. But overall its not a dealbreaker. Im still loving this phone
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
Are you talking about the touch sound you can toggle in the "sounds" settings?
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
It's the vibration motor rattling the main camera autofocus mechanism. Tap the back of the phone near the camera and you'll hear the same sort of rattle. The camera is meant to take the abuse, so it's annoying at best.
This thread should be kept alive...lol I just noticed the vibration noise discussed here...I'm a bit worried... Or should I not be long term?? Coming from a Samsung S2 SR
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 2
I have noticed this and to put my mind at ease I turned off all the vibration stuff accept when turning on. I flashed Fauxs kernel and turned the vibration to 100% and the sound is greatly reduced. I think it is due to the speed of the vibration motor. At any rate the combination helped greatly. On the down side kinda makes me feel like my phone is cheap
I just bought an s4 today with Verizon. I'm laying here in bed and I noticed something strange which I never saw on my note 2 or my s3. I was reading a Web page with my brightness turned all the way up and it seemed like every 20 secs r so it would get a little dimmer then it would get bright again. I have adjust screen tone turned off. Then I went to settings, display, brightness and I see this message that says something like max brightness had been turned down to avoid overheating. Is this why my screen seemed to be dimming then getting bright again? Yes, the phone was quite warm during all of this. It also only happens when the brightness is turned all the way up.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
Its because of the heat if your phone it turned the brightness down. Because it could be a big source if heat. Interesting enough that has never happened to me.
This happens at any brightness I think and not related to heat- some of the main browsers have a slight auto adjust brightness even if the phone setting is turned off. I read it a few times so I assume it is that. I see this as well using Chrome.
In a dark room, have brightness to middle or something, and be on a light/white web page in Chrome.Pull the notification bar down and without really noticing, the screen will get slightly brighter due to the darker color. But drag the bar back up and instantly you can barely see the screen go back slightly darker again for the browser.
It was happening using any app not just a browser. I literally sat here and didn't touch the screen at all and I could see it go from bright to dimmer then to bright.. Back and forth..
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
And I've seriously never seen that message about brightness being turned down on my s3 or note 2. I don't even know why my s4 is so warm right now..
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
guys, it's a heat issue.
when the phone reaches a certain temp (i believe it's around 35 degrees C), it automatically dims down your display, no matter waht the brightness. you can be on 0 brightness, and it will dim anything that's a bright page, like a bright white.
test it by doing this: be in the browser when you notice it dim, and tap on the URL bar to bring up the keyboard...notice how bringing up the keyboard restores the brightness to what it was before that? that's because now the screen isn't engulfed in a super bright white screen..now it's divided between half bright white, and half darker from the keyboard, so it thinks "okay, the screen isn't fully white now, so we can go back to original brightness."
i suppose another way of showing why this is, which is much easier and idk why i didn't write this first lol but go into the brightness control in the display menu when it does it, and notice how it says "screen birghtness will be lowered to reduce risk of overheating" or soemthing. it only says that when you hit a certain temp.
the phone gets really hot, period. that's just how the S4 is unfortunately. so you may notice this happening often; i do lol
My phone does this too. I was wondering why it was doing this too. I guess the heat issue makes sense.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda premium
Yeah dude that's exactly what the message said and I've never seen that before in my other phones. Don't understand why it got so hot? I wasn't even doing much... So the s4 naturally just gets warmer? My note 2 never got this warm, ever. I just want to make sure mine isn't messed up...

Also check for the "Screen mode". It is under Settings -> My device Tab -> Display -> Screen mode
I usually leave it at Professional photo for less saturated but more accurate color rendering. If you check "Adapt display" or "Dynamic" it will try to adjust contrast based on scene displayed which may look like brightening and dimming of display, if you had "Auto adjust screen tone" unchecked.
What does the auto button do?
