Well,
Sort of a noob question, but since I dont know how easy or hard could it be.
If I buy a SGS-II with a service plan in UK (Orange, Voda etc), then can it be unlocked to be used in other countries or other operators.
I know maybe it has got something to do with the gaining the root access to the handset or even a root access achieve the desired.
Thanks for suggestions.

It's got nothing to do with root and everything to do with the carrier, some will deliver locked phones, some unlocked.. most usually contract phones are unlocked and PAYG phones are locked
I'm on O2 contract and the phones I've had have always been unlocked, but I've heard Orange do network lock their phone
Orange do always lock their phones but if you get it from an independent seller like the Carphone Warehouse or Phones4u the chances are it'll be unlocked.
Most networks will unlock your phone for a small fee (I think I paid £25 on Orange) but it's only a matter of time before sellers on eBay popup that will sell you an unlock code based on your IMEI.
You're right that you could unlock handsets with root access but that involved flashing another radio. Since no locked SGS2's have been released yet you're safe buying now and the phone hasn't been rooted so you may be waiting a while for that option if you get a locked handset in the future.
You could always use a Rebel SimCard. Its not the perfect solution but it works.
So we just have to wait basically. O2 are offering it for 399£ apparently on payg. It would be awesome to get it for that price and then unlock it.

Last year, o2 were selling the SGS1 on PAYG. I think the handsets were supposed to be locked but they weren't. If you're in luck then maybe same is true for SGS2. I've pulled the trigger on the SGS2 with contract from o2 as total cost works out cheaper that any PAYG or sim free offer currently available.

Does orange still exist over there?
Three took over Orange over here in Australia years ago
On three if you call them up they give you the unlock code for free
I asked a popular online unlocking firm what the likelihood of the SGS2 being unlocked was and this was his reply:
Hi Aaron,
This should be no problem at all. That's because there's one main database for all European Samsung Android handsets. We have unlocked the Samsung Galaxy S from all 6 main UK networks.

I will ask them to unlock if my SGS2 arrives locked. I found them doing a quick google search. I am not sure I am allowed to post links so mods please remove if that is the case. http://www.mobileunlocked.co.uk/
There are many more if you do a google search.
What sites do you use to sim unlock HTC Amaze?
I checked a couple and found out they scams - they only take money and do not send out unlock codes. It would be great if those who unlocked would mention sites they used and the unlock cost so that the rest of us could find the best unlock price and would not get into scam unlock sites

I wish I could call them. There is no T-Mobile in Canada and I don't have a T-Mobile phone number which is the first thing they ask.

You can say you're not a T-mobile customer but would like to use their T-mobile phone. Most reps don't really care much, they might try to sell you a contract or whatever, but in the end, they'll just give in and give you the code. Well that's how it was about a year ago. idk if it changed now.
Oh and from what I remembered it is actually much easier to get the code when you're not a customer, because if you were, they'll be asking you why do you want it unlocked and stuff (are you changing carriers) etc etc.
yeah call tmo, I was in mexico unlocking phones, just ask for the IEMI number, and within 2/3 days you get an email with the code, no charge...

It only lets you use it with other GSM carriers/providers. That's all. Nothing else.
I called T-Mobile twice and they basically said that since I do not have an account with T-Mobile they can't give me an unlock code. They said I need to call HTC directly. When I called HTC they said that I need to call T-Mobile to get the unlock code.
That's why I would like some reports on what online unlocking services anyone used to unlock the Amaze so that people like me wouldn't get scammed by some website that only take the money and do not provide an unlock code. Also the unlock price would give an idea of what site is the cheapest of the reliable ones.

Usually the prices in Canada are higher than in the states buying a phone off craigslist. I bought it in Seattle for $380. Also I'm not on Telus in Canada and Telus is a CDMA provider. If they offer GSM service it would be the same as of AT&T band. I'm on Wind which operates on the same band as T-Mobile so to make sure my phone works on my carrier I bought a phone from T-Mobile.
I started this thread just to find out what online unlocking sevices are reliable and cost less so that I and other people who buy phones off eBay or craigslist could find an easy way to unlock their phones.
Try http://www.cellunlocker.net/
you can also use:
http://www.htcimeiunlock.com/htc-imei-unlock.php
I've used it to get an unlock code for an Inspire (which I used on the Roger's network) only took 5 min's to receive the code. I'm currently waiting on a response regarding a Telus Amaze unlock code, guess it's no so fast on release day.

I'm going to try http://www.htcimeiunlock.com/htc-imei-unlock.php It costs $25
EDIT: I got the phone unlocked. It took only 5 minutes and $25 to get the code
So I'm going to have to assume that since the phone is exclusive (at the moment) to AT&T that they'll do what they did to everyone with the Lumia 900 and not allow it to be carrier unlocked.
Anyone else feel the same? I highly recommend this time around that people wait for any confirmation or confirmed reports of unlocking BEFORE actually buying this phone. I for one didn't enjoy looking at my 900 sitting in my drawer for 2 months before I sold it and took a hit on my wallet.
None, mine is locked
Its locked! I bought an at&t 920 with no contract from best buy and the phone is locked... my tmobile card got discriminated against as soon as I entered it... hopefully straight talk doesn't get the same redhead stepchild treatment as well...
6 month carrier exclusivity...
You can expect any new phones from AT&T, not just 900 and 920, have the same treatment. Hardly anything new. Even the old Galaxy S2 which was released to 3 carriers at the same time get the same 6-month lock out period.
I bought mine off contract and called ATT to get an unlock code. They took my IMEI, submitted a request, and said I should hear back in 3-5 business days. Will let you guys know how it goes.

Yes, you can buy an off contract 920 from AT&T store. But whether or not you will get unlock code from AT&T is crap shot. Some may get lucky but most will be denied for the so called exclusivity period.

For other brands, eBay typically is pretty good. But if pass experience with Nokia Lumia 900 holds true, you won't get unlock code from other places either.

does this mean its the most stable way to get unlock code?
does it have a risk?
i dont want to buy a lock 920 back to Europe but i cant use it ._.
I wouldn't buy one from US AT&T despite the price.
Chances are you won't be able to unlock it for 6 months and then have it useless for that time.
Canadian Rogers is the best bet if you could get it somehow as they're apparently unlocked.

I'm not sure what you mean there. But what I said is that there was NO unlock code can be obtained ANYWHERE in first 6 months for Nokia L900. I expect L920 is the same. All the ebay unlock vendors share the same database and most of them will take your payment first. Then after a while they will refund your money due to unable to find unlock code for you. Typically, you can buy unlock code for Samsung phones rather fast. HTC, maybe a few weeks or month or two after release. But Nokia seems to keep its unlock code database rather tight.

It's not certain if Rogers ones will continue being unlocked. The ones they were selling were part of some weird early batch (many are speculating they were related to the //build DEV phones). The phone still isn't listed on their website and they still haven't given a release date (even though they technically already released it by selling a small batch).

Confirmed no Unlock Code
Received an official "yea L920 can't be unlocked right now bc Nokia won't let us" reply after ordering it from the only place I found that listed the L920 AND allowed me to order it (see attached). American cell carriers suck (excluding Tmobile bc they don't care what phone you have)...and we wonder why the rest of the world hates America! Spend $500 retail and can't drive 20 minutes into Mexico and use your phone.

For $99 with a free wireless charging pad, 99% of the users will care less about unlockability of the phone. They will drive to Mexico and continue use their phone alright then come back crying wolf when they received their bill.
Rest of the world don't subsidize cell phones as much as US. Most ppl buy their phones at full price. Imagine you have to buy all your phones at $500 to $800 a piece, what will you say?
Unlocked w/o Subsidy vs. Locked w/Subsidy
If you read my post, I paid $500 retail for my phone...I did NOT get a subsidized phone. I understand if AT&T had said "get it for $99, no unlock...buy it for $500...get it unlocked." Instead, they said, buy it for $500 like the rest of the world...still get screwed. Big difference! I am from Africa...born and raised...traveled to 37 countries so I know all about Subsidy vs Retail pricing. It's the pay-full-price-and-still-get-screwed mentality of AT&T that bothers me.
(And before someone says, then why didn't you buy it from Rogers unlocked instead of AT&T...I'll respond...this is my 3rd phone - Galaxy Note, L920 and iPhone - and I love hacking with phones and figuring them out so I bought this on my friends ATT account for retail since I wanted the white and at the time no one online including Rogers had the white one available).

I know you paid retail price and know how you feel. But in US, majoity of ppl don't pay retail and could care less about unlock. The No.1 cell phone carrier is Verizon where most of its phones are CDMA only. There is no such thing as unlocked for CDMA phones. Neither Verizon, nor Sprint will alow any phone that does not have its brand name printd on into its network As such, most pp won't think their carrier suck because of lack of unlock. If you think you paid retail and deserve unlock code, you don't know anything about US carriers.
<end of debate...back to productive thread>
This is my last reply...I won't use a valuable thread to argue:
- I posted my confirmation so others knew not to waste their time right now with the very few who claim to be able to Unlock the L920.
- I knew ATT wouldn't give me an unlock code or unlocked phone, I had HOPED they would do the right thing for full-retail customers. I'm not complaining...I'm trying to find a solution so I can help others who don't know as much how they can get theirs unlocked. I'm not naive...but that doesn't change the fact that ATT selling a full retail phone without giving you an unlock code is still wrong...and no I didn't expect them to do the right thing...they're a US carrier!!
- I do know the carriers...and you absolutely can put a non-Sprint and/or non-Verizon phone or device on their network. I have taken a Sprint MIFI device, registered it and used it on my Verizon data service. My close friend works for VZ wireless as an device SE and he confirms they do this all the time, they just don't market it nor do they want the 80% to know you can do this so they lie and tell you you can't. I've had friends do the same with a smartphone they purchased from Verizon and moved over to Sprint...same process. Push them hard enough, they'll add the other device to their network as long as it's CDMA.
- I'm here to help others find the "Gevey Unlock" equivalent for the L920...not debate the debacle of US carriers Let's refocus to finding a workaround/hack/something to help get the L920's that are locked or crippled working better for the users of the forums
<end of thread...back to the Unlock or No-Unlock/Help-Find-a-Solution thread>
So, I have some relatives who lives in the US who can buy me a cyan 920 in December which is unavailable outside the US. The US pricing is also impressive since the no-contract version costs just $449 unlike the actual version that will come here (Indonesia) at about $649 and by about January or something. I also found this website which can unlock the 920 for $49.99. Should I take the plunge?
http://www.cellunlock.net/Unlock_AT_T_Nokia_Lumia_920_p/unlockattn920.htm
I would do more research on the internet to see if the website is actually legit. The places I get my unlock codes are from eBay from Top Sellers.
For the AT&T Lumia 900, they have unlock codes on eBay, but you have to complete the two year contract.
There might be a way to unlock the phone.
If your relatives can call AT&T confirming you can get the phone unlocked if they buy it outright (full retail price)
I think you should be able to get it unlocked if you pay full price.
Also I found this site who afirm they will unlock it too.
http://www.gsmunlockusa.com/u-s-a-at-t-nokia-lumia-610-710-800-820-900-920(1-3-days)-p-908.html
Hope someone can try and confirm if this one is a trusted site.
Unfortunately, AT&T is not being very helpful regarding unlocking the 920. Even when paid full-price. I don't intend on actually buying the phone with contract, but I just want to know if you guys have similar success/fail stories since this will be the first time for me to unlock phones. (also the reliability of the websites would be awesome)
PS. I also wonder where these websites get the unlock codes from, and what would happen if those codes would not work.
when the first generation of Windows Phones arrives, i bought a Samsung Focus V1.3 (which is my actual phone) and i get the unlock code from FastGSM. I ask them for the unlock code for Lumia 920 and i get this response:
Hello,
sorry but the unlocking service is not available yet for this phone model.
Kind regards,

the word "yet" makes me think that unlock codes arent far away.
Cellunlock, net is reputable website - I have gotten unlock codes for many a phone through them. Only once, they were not able to get an unlock code for me, but they refunded my money promptly.
For the AT&T 920, they do claim a turnaround time of 5-10 days. I'm not sure why it is so long, but do you want to wait that long to find out?
BTW, if you do decide to go with Cellunlock.net, use the code "CRACKB50" for 50% off on the unlock price.
Hope some AT&T Lumia owner try to unlock it. If they unlock it, i can buy my own lumia and use it in my country with no risk. BTW, using the voucher code from rajeshr the unlock code cost 19.99.
Edit: I found other service for unlock rogers devices

ive had two lumia 920's and ATT actually sent me the unlock code for the first one! However, I think the CSR made a mistake when submitting my request, because when I received the unlock code it says its for a Lumia 900.
Did it work? I'm not sure because I have already exchanged the phone for another color!
I submitted another request for the second phone, but promptly received a notice saying they wont unlock because of the exclusivity period.
@rohitgarewal: How did you ask for the unlock code and for what reasons?
@BigwaveMx: Were you able to use tethering with other carriers after the unlock?
Thanks, btw for the replies!
i haven't (yet) a lumia 920. Still waitting to buy the unlock code for use it in my country. However, I read in some places that there is a problem with tethering in AT&T and Rogers devices. For me, is not a big deal have tethering. I bealive the international version works fine.

I don't think the developer unlock is the same as network unlock. From what I read on that link, developer unlock allows you to sideload (using an Android term; i.e. not from the market) apps for development and testing. It does not say anything about unlocking the phone for other carriers.

Expansys USA is apparently selling the AT&T branded 920 unlocked for $620. Can't post links yet, not enough posts. It is recently went from "We have no confirmed lead time for this item" to "Stock Usually Ships In 10 Days." So far they have all replied negatively.
I just emailed your site and I'm waiting on a reply now.

I will be in the US for vacation in about six weeks and planning to buy The One.
Can you please help me with some questions:
1. Assuming that by then stock would be plenty and they don't refuse off contract sales. My question is: will A&TT or T-Mobile sell me the phone without me getting any phone service. I have my SIM with international roaming and do not need any kind of US phone service. I just need the Hardware. Is it possible?
2. Because I would be paying the phone without any contract or subsidy (full price). Can you confirm it will be unlocked to use with a SIM from any operator? Is it something automatically or I have to request it in the store?
3. I'm ok if they can only be unlocked. But have to ask if The One bough from operators can also be customized with other ROMS.
3. Which carrier is prefered to do this (if can be done) AT&T or T-Mobile.
Thanks you!

You probably want to buy the unlocked version. It is cheaper, unlocked, and will be able to use custom roms after unlocking the bootloader http://shopamerica.htc.com/brands/HTC-mobile/homebrands/index.htm
If not to answer those questions
1. Yes you can buy off contract
2. It will not be unlocked. You probably can unlock it easily with something like cellular unlocker service
3. Right now the bootloader is unlockable. We do not know if they will lock in the future
3(again). AT&T has earlier release but it doesnt really matter

Thanks for the prompt response. I would like to buy it from HTC directly but what I planning is a road trip and won't be staying more than a couple of days in any place. It is difficult to time processing and delivery times from HTC and I don't know how strict they are with billing address differing from shipping address.
Bummer they would not unlocked it even after paying it in full. What "unlocker" services do you recommend. I have never used one.

It is difficult to time processing and delivery times from HTC and I don't know how strict they are with billing address differing from shipping address.
Bummer they would not unlocked it even after paying it in full. What "unlocker" services do you recommend. I have never used one.

There are a lot out there like http://www.cellunlocker.net/ they will just send you a code that you can enter after putting a none AT&T sim in it. Now a disclaimer from me. I have heard of a lot of phones being unlocked by them but the HTC One has not been unlocked on AT&T yet as far as I know.
I just bought one from a employee on craigslist and trying to get it unlocked
Sent from my HTC One
If any carrier sells you a phone for off contract pricing you're eligible/entitled to have it unlocked when you walk out the door. Just call them.
