I just bought an OTG Cable for my phone and the first thing I did was to connect a USB flash drive, everything worked fine until I wanted out, there was no option to remove it safely in the notification bar or anything like that .. . hit it off and got an error saying that storage unexpectedly retired. As I can remove the USB safely?

Ok
Download "stick mount" or "AL mass storage manager" from market.
Both are free and should get the job done

I have the drivers installed on my system, but unlike my cappy, after successfully connecting to my Win 7 computer (Your device is ready to use), the device's SD card does not show as a drive and I do not get the notification to allow USB storage.
Am I missing something?
I have to disable USB Debbugging to connect to my PC and windows 7 as a drive.
Try settings > applications > development and uncheck USB debugging if is checked.
Good luck.

If you're running the stock kernel, you have to go to Settings | Wireless and Network | USB Utilities | USB Mass Storage to enable usb file transfer.
I apologize, I should have noted that I'm rooted and not stock.

Silly question... but I ran into a similar problem on my first connection until I realized I had to push the "connect to USB" button on my phone's screen for the PC to recognize it. You did press the button on the screen, right?
Just eliminating possibilities! ^^;
I came from an iPhone... felt stupid once I realized the problem haha.

You could go to dailer and hit ##3424# and click qualcomm USB settings tab and there's a list of options. Maybe that's what you're looking for??

Your code doesnt work. I'm just looking for an option to let me activate or deactivate the mode that when your computer is connected to phone, it shows up like a camera.
yes that is mtp mode which is the only mode you will have for ics. they removed mass storage mode from android with ics because of how the filesystem works.
when you connect the phone to your PC, do you get a notification on your phone? If you bring down the notification menu you should be able to see the USB notification. Clicking on it will bring up a menu that helps you switch modes.
I always have to plug my phone into my PC twice.
It has never once connected on the first time but never fails the 2nd time.
Thats the problem. Yesturday i did have the mtp notif...now i dont it just says charging but it doesnt shop like its connected on the phone or the pc. I wonder what happened. Wierd. Does anybody kniw where the mtp mode menu is...if there is one.
P.s. this problem happens on all my computers so the problem is with the phone.

And yet mass storage works flawlessly with SGS2 running stock ICS.
Another guess perhaps or another line of reasoning?

hmmm I don't know if this will help or not but I did stumble across a USB settings in our phone with anycut.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1764696
I've left mine on "Mass Storage" and its been that way ever since. Other than that I see the USB icon in the upper left when I plug it in and can see it through my pc.
I had the same issue where it would only charge when plugged into a computer. For me it took a battery pull, then the computer was able to see the phone. This happened for me after experimenting with various non-samsung chargers and usb cables.
Weird stuff, it just came back today. I have no freakin idea what happened, i didnt do anything at all. It just came back. Well, thanks for your help.

The "Red cross on battery" is the tablet's way of telling you that it won't pull full charging current from that device. However, it will charge (although slowly).
If your device is not showing up on your PC, make sure the cable is good. Verify that USB debugging is enabled as well.
USB Debugging is enabled. But still no luck

Go in settings/storage and look for the 3 dots in top right corn, you will enable usb there.
