Hey guys, I know back to soon asking questions for help but honest I couldn't find guides on how to install roms and that I sort of had questions..
1. Will flashing CM 9 rom the stable one have any draw backs on my device? like some apps/function not working, I wanna know..
2. I'm on gingerbread 2.3.3 right now CM 9 is based on ICS, so my question is what do I need for this rom to install on my phone..
3. I've only rooted with CF-root method and I am totally a noob I just rooted to run GS2 repair app cause I somehow had messed up my EFS which I hav fixed now.. so I'm totally a noob and definitely need a guide.. can someone please help me out it would mean a lot to me..
also all the safety tips there please throw them at me.. so I don't end up bricking my phone up.. Thank you so much for your time XDA members and seniors..

1. No. However, Samsung proprietary apps will not work with CM9
2. Since you have ROOT, we can get to work now.
I'll post steps soon
3. You are lucky you got it fixed. Do you have backup of your /efs now?

Well Sir I have the back up from GS2 repair that initially backed up my corrupted folder and then began the process of replacing the original files with .bak files which worked, I backed up my efs folder again and now I have a copy of it on the PC.. I'm not satisfied to call it a back up... so I'll love it if you help me with that too, right now my phone is totally alright.
Thank you so much for helping me out.

To backup your /efs again, visit: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1308546
Although optional, I recommended you flash a Samsung based ICS 4.0.3 ROM before flashing CM9.
I recommend Wanamlite ROM. Download Wanamlite 12.0 here: wanamlite.com/forums/showthread.php?tid=26
Visit CM9 thread, download ROM and Gapps here: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1419102
Flashing instructions will follow soon

Sorry bro for late reply, I've been very busy.
Step 1:
We will need to flash the Samsung ICS ROM (Wanamlite), you downloaded first, like I recommended
- boot to CWM recovery
- backup your present ROM
- wipe data/factory reset
- wipe cache partition
- wipe dalvik cache
- format /system (under mount and storage)
- flash Wanamlite ROM you downloaded
- reboot phone
Use the phone for about 30 minutes to 1 hour then proceed to step two
Step 2:
We will now be flashing CM9
- boot to CWM recovery
- backup your present ROM (optional)
- wipe data/factory reset
- wipe cache partition
- wipe dalvik cache
- format /system (under mount and storage)
- flash CM9 ROM
- flash gapps
- fix permissions (under Advanced)
- reboot phone
Please report feedback.

I'm so sorry for replying late.. I sort of had gotten busy..
so anyhow I did as I was instructed and first installed the wanamlite rom, everything worked smoothly however I didn't like the rom one bit.. it was laggy and boring..
after a little time I decided to install cm9 which was a nightly and after doing everything it didn't work the phone was stuck on the start, I reverted back to the wanamlite rom and then downloaded the stable cm9 and installed it and it worked like a charm and it wasn't that laggy at all,
however after installing it I immediately started to missing some of the samsung features such as, screenshot with home and power button, the choco cooky font and the ringtones, but I love the fact that the vibration was restored which I some how had weakened on my phone (I love texting with that)..
now I've come across new issues and I wanna restore my ability to change brightness from screen, screen shots and of course change the font.. I'd be beyond happy if you can help me out with that...
right now I wanna say thank you so much for helping this noob :3 your the best.

About your problem:
-brightness slider, screen shots (from power button) all can be found under settings, just go there and tweak your device as you please
-Rom Toolbox lite, a free app can help you change your fonts to whatever font you want, and lot more
good luck
I just came here to tell I had found the brightness option in the settings he he Okay now I really like this rom, its lovely.. yeah some little problems but I love it!
and about the font application its safe to use?.. I know very annoying question but I'm just asking cause Its really not that important for me to have a custom font :3
Thank you so much for help I can't tell how happy I am with you helping me out.

Well I tired the app worked great for the first two tries but on the third I got stuck on the boot loop, quick googling saved me the horror of starting over as I simply reinstalled the rom without doing any wipes and I'm back on the phone..
yeah on the third try I decided to apply the font I wanted which resided in the system fonts it was by a different name however after the reboot I was stuck..
There could be many reasons behind it.. but I think I shouldn't go taking too much risks over a stupid font..

My phone is quote slow and laggy and it's quite surprising seeing as this phone is meant to be known for it's speed and power.
I have rooted with cf-root , I don't really know if this means if I have a custom kernel.
All I want to know is if there is a custom ROM or kernel to help with this. If yes, which one. Many developers claim there stuff speeds up phones but obviously they're bias. I want neutral opinions from people with experience of different things.
Before people tell me to search I can only access the net through my phone and the drop down search button don't work.
First of all rooting your phone is good cos it now means that you can flash a custom ROM.Something that cant be done on stock. For the moment stay with CF-Root as they are basically stock rooted kernels and at the moment I dont think you need to get into overclocking and undervolting and all that stuff that more advanced kernels can do cos if you do it wrong yourve got problems. As for ROMs your right. All Devs will say that they have the best one and all happy users, yes like myself, will say they use the best one too.The problem is that everyone has different likes and needs. No one who has spent time on this site has ever only had ONE ROM on their phone. Its impossible to not turn into a flashaholic at some stage. The best you can do is read threads and try some. Not the answer you wanted but its the best and only way to find what you want.Try mine.I love it.The link is below the big blue Omega sign. Its the one that says "GB".If you dont like it then try something else.Theres really no other way to find out what you want unless you try for yourself.
I see.. So I simply download the custom ROM and install it through clockwork mod?
Do I have to back up my phone with titanium back up before I install custom roms?

Step 1 - backup with titanium.
Step 2 - reboot into cwm or with the cwm app, create a backup. So, if you flash something that you don't like or if it wont boot, you can restore it. This is a complete system and data backup. A 1:1 copy of your phone setup, excluding modem which defaults to whatever you are running at the time of restore.
Step 3 - try some custom roms. I use Checkrom (older version - v2) and phone flies.
Anyway, something must be wrong with your setup because every rom I've used has been fast, even stock.
ps : sent you a pm.

Once you get sorted then do an EFS backup. The EFS folder contains your IMEI number and if for whatever reason you should loose it or it becomes corrupt then you are in the poo.Download the "release.zip" and follow the easy instructions.

I was using checkrom v4 and then v6 for a little while both with SiyahKernel which worked really well.
Currently using CM9 but I wouldn't go there until your comfortable fixing things and regularly flashing.
But definately select your rom and then try changing kernels if you think it will benefit you.

Hi!
I have a problem with Galaxy Ace messaging.
First custom ROM on my Galaxy Ace was ICS CM9 beta 8 ROM. Before installing it I did all the things in first sticky thread about how to install custom ROM.
When I installed that CM9 ROM messaging was not working - like, I couldn't normally open that program. It just froze when I tried to do something with messages and showed that Messaging couldn't be launched. That was not the simple program freeze when there is choice to Force quit, but that was different.
I thought that is because of ROM, that was still beta version.
Today I tried different ROM, CM7 Miracle edition. But again the same problem.
I think it is, maybe, because of wrong firmware or something.
Please, needed help.
Thank You in advance,
Daniels
Is it the "real" Galaxy Ace? Without any "i" or "m" etc at the end? Are you able to call?
Try Wipe Data, Dalvik Cache and Cache again + reflashing!
Or do a clean flash with ODIN, but I don't know if that makes sense...

Real one, just Samsung Galaxy Ace.
After installing the last one, I tried wiping data and re-installing the same ROM.
How can I do a clean flash with ODIN? ODIN was for firmware not ROM, yes?
I meant with "clean flash" original firmware by Samsung. I don't know exactly how important the baseband is, but MAYBE you "destroyed" something and flashing with ODIN can repair it... Read the TUT's about flashing in the first post's of the development section!
Are you able to do calls?

Someone could help, please?
What version of CWM did u use?
what.....? I'm just saying ...didnt hurt much
it happened something similar to me, i was messing with sispem apps and deleted some and i destroyed the original firmware you just need to google the original firmware for ur model (L,B,etc...), charge it in odin and u'll get a nice new firmware to mess with ( i recommend u to keep it somewhere, chances are u need it again)
and be shure you're getting the rom for your model because it does metter
this is a tutorial on how to flash stock rom using odin:
http://yagyagaire.blogspot.com/2012/01/how-to-flash-official-stock-firmwares.html
Hope i helped
Thank You all for helping.
Today I tried simple thing - I installed messaging program, that I downloaded from market and everything is working now.
So, I dont know how or why, but these ROMs didn't have messaging program included.

Many devs like to keep their ROM lite..so they dont attach many system files which also benefit us as we can customize it as we like...
So u just need to check whether mms.apk file is there in your /system/app folder
if it isnt there then u just have to get it from somewhere and paste it over there using any root file explorer (best one is ES file explorer)
And bingo! Everything will work perfectly

ok.hi everyone.
i just flashed a cyanogen mod 9 on my phone by using cwm.but things went really bad
all my backup files from titanium backup was deleted and so was all my recovery files
so basically everything is gone.
Now i loved the idea of rooting but i now think i need a lot more knowledge.
so basically i would like to
reinstall ics version 4.0.3 on my phone with its stock kernel..my phone used to be a galaxy s 2 I9100 xwlp8
the cyanogen mod does not even have an app to explore sd.
but its working.
what is the process to clean up my phone and add stock kernel, rom and apps.
please need urgent help.thanks.:crying:
can anything be done if i have an efs backup.plz need help urgently
now then,
just a little more info needed, its not quite clear from your post
1, can you switch your phone on to get into cwm
2, have you got the correct version of cwm installed, i had rhe same issue cannlt access sdcard a while ago
just for info cym romz are generally nightly builds and have a few kinks in them your best waiti.g a couple of weeks before dl,ing so some of these may be fixed (read this in another post sumwhere thanks for heads up whomever it was)
no expert but if you lost your efs folder i think odin can fix if you can get into download mode.
after this use cwm it highly recommended by all.
also next time you install rom steer clear of formatting anything it dangerous just wipe d'cache, cache etc as dev's post's advise where ypu get romz from.
Hey guys,
I'd like to return to stock samsung rom, resetting the device to factory setting (keep reading).
Reason for this is
1 I'am experiencing fastidious UI lags issue.
2 I've done several "Restore factory Setting/Wipe all data" and I can see folders of applications I installed at least three roms ago (and not installed anymore). Some of them are empty, some are not.
Maybe my device is just imploding bacause of the number of apps he keeps managing.
Maybe he doesn't like me anymore,
or maybe he is dying of cancer. :crying:
Info about my device:
Kernel: Siyah 1.8.9
1st ROM: Samsung 4.1.1
2nd ROM: CM10.1, 20120117 build
Goal:
I'd like to return to Stock Kernel with the stock 4.1.2 Samsung firmware.
So, how can I REALLY reset my device, starting againg form where I indicated?

Anyone help????//??
The absolute cleanest way, is to do a mega wipe. Use Titanium Backup to save all the apps you want/need (NO SYSTEM APPS). Then, Factory Reset/Wipe Data, wipe internal sd card and wipe external sd (if you have one). Backup all pictures, photos and files you want on your pc first, then wipe everything. The Megawipe script can help you with this. Follow up by downloading one of the new 4.1.2 deodexed roms (Preferably LKC or LLA). You can keep the stock kernel or choose from my main 2 - Perseus Kernel or Yank kernel
Umh.. I'm not sure I got it.
First, I should remove Siyah kernel and the second ROM right?
How can I do it?
Will the Siyah Kernel be overwritten when I'll write the Stock Samsung 4.1.2 firmware?

Yes.
There is a sticky .
One run Triangle Away reset rom counter to zero .
Two flash your original saved stock rom Via Odin = wipes phone .
Three factory reset .
Four boot to download mode check status original and count is 0.
Boot phone settings about phone Status device status not modified .
Finally check there are no left over root apps on the phone .

Need detailed info on this, anyone willing to help?
all the details are there for you to read
Thank you, anyway I'd like to advise that flashing via Odin doesn't format anything.
Step 0 is: Do a full data wipe (if you do it after triangle remover, I think counter will be incremented to 1, not tried though... )

sometime flashing rom and than flah another rom may cause lag even the rom are really smooth. Try this, it work for me. Wipe Data, Cache Partition, Clear dalvike cache, format system and format preload. As far as i know, preload where it chaching framework. Sometime when flashing and keep flashing rom that different framework, the cache still there. that may cause lag.

If you want a clean install, without lags, I'd recommend not messing about with the fonts. Try running it stock for a while and see if your lags have gone, before fiddling with it.

Hi guys,
I'm new here. I didn't root my S3 yet, but I want to do it and install new rom. But first I would need your help with Rom choosing, as I'm completely blind in this matter
The thing is, I would prefer a ROM which let me choose which application I want to install on my phone and which not - check/uncheck option. This rom should be FAST and stable.
As I have no experience at all, I would like to ask you which ROM will be the best for me? Btw, it would be great if I can choose language (Polish).
Hope you will help me
Regards,
Karol
edit: sorry for typo in the topic, impossible to change it now
Hi, I am in the same boat. Stock standard international S3, but extremely slow. Ram usage on startup is 700mb.
Which rom would you guys suggest that is both stable (no bugs), and fast (using much less ram).
This is my everyday phone, I take a lot of photos, especially the camera should be functioning perfectly.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Edit: Last time I rooted and played around with these things were about 3-4 years ago with my Sony X10 mini. I am slowly getting back into it, reading up on the latest rooting apps etc.
@errolpl: Search in development subforum for 'aroma installer'. Usually these ROMs offer only system apps to choose. 3rd party user apps you'll have to install by your own. You can edit the header with edit-function.
@demozzracy: If you want full camera suport, I recommend NCS-ROM: based on last JB-firmware, but brilliant debloated. So slim, fast, battery friendly and all hardware working. I'm testing many LP-ROMs, but they are primarily newer, hardly better (for S3).
@rp158: Thank you!
I was extremely new just a few weeks back as well. I must say that my attempts on finding a solution for my slow S3 has been a rather hard and bumpy road.
To help you save some time, here is what I've gathered so far:
Last time I flashed phone firmware, a couple of years ago, it required a PC, a cable and some funky software.
Then when I flashed my S3 for the first time, about a year ago, I started out with Cyanogenmod and used their app+cable installer. I think this is still the easiest way to root the phone, and get started with custom roms. Even if you plan to use some other rom than Cyanogenmod.
When the phone is rooted you can install TWRP, simply done via an app on the appstore. TWRP is recovery firmware that can stay on the phone, even though you flash new roms. (The phone is divided into several separate sections, bootloader, recovery, actual system, and data area.... I don't even know much about it yet.) The important part is that it is extremely easy to flash new roms using this tool, and a micro SD-card.
Simply drop the rom zip file onto the card and flash them. (For some roms you need to flash some "GAPPS" as well. These are the google apps, like the play store etc. If you don't flash them you can't really use the phone for much.)
This is where the real problems start. Finding the right ROM.
The S3 is old, and only supported up to Jelly Bean for my 1GB international version, or Kitkat if you have one of the 2gb versions.
This has not stopped developers in providing both Kitkat and Lollipop to any version of the S3. However... as eager they are to provide the newest coolest features, just as lazy do they seem to be with their testing. (Sorry guys, but someone has to say it.)
So I've gone through some roms now... none of them really good.
The first Official Cyanogenmod I flashed half a year ago. I used this for almost a year.. but the camera would crash constantly, and the phone was not able to display video. For example movieclips on facebook.
Second ROM: Cyanogenmod has also stopped developing for the S3, so a few weeks back I switched to some unofficial version. It seemed to work... camera and video was ok, and everything had the nice Lollipop feel to it.
However MMS did not work. I could receive one and send one, next ones would require a reboot for them to work. The problem was brought up in the ROM Q/A tread, but the answer from the developer was: Sorry I don't use MMS so I don't really see a problem.
Third: Onto some next rom. This one was tagged STABLE. It was far from it. In fact it was even easier to discover that this rom had the same MMS problem. Because the message app would crash immediately when trying to send one.
4th attemt was the same rom, but a different kernel... still the same problem.
5th rom was Blisspop... Wau, this was beautiful! Cool webpage, Cool animations.... it was just too bad that the site is dead, and that the rom can't even run for 24 hours without the android keyboard crashing 25 times or so. Also Blisspop has OTA updates... the only problem is that it constantly says that there is a new version for the S3.. but the download fails. Apparently some bad change to the website caused this, and apparently this problem has been going on for 3 months without anyone bothering to fix it.
6th was Archidroid. The second to top ROM for the S3. It looks cool, and has many features... but just as other Lollipop ROMs, sending MMS's without error is not one of them....
I've really tried everything. People always says that the MMS problems are due to APN's not being set up correctly, doing some reboots etc.... but trust me... I've set them up so many times you wouldn't belive it.
7th. After reading this thread and rp158's recommendation of NCS-ROM I'm now running that one. Without a single thing being set up, I was able to send and receive MMS's right away.
However... now I'm stuck back at the ugly kitkat look, and Touch wiz.
tl;dr;
So what do I want to say with all this?
Get root and TWRP and start playing around with ROMs
Lollipop does not look like an option for the S3, at least not right now
Don't let yourself be fooled by nice webpages or [STABLE]-tags, or comments that say: "I've been running this since yesterday.. it's 100% stable!"
Timusius thanks a lot for that post.
Puts things in perspective.
As I said in my post, I am ok with the KitKat look, as long as it is stable, I am always on call at work, and cant afford constant phone crashes.
I am going to try the root/twrp to NCS rom in the next couple of days
@Timusius thank you for your post. You help me a lot!

It's 5 months already that im using S5 Sensation rom for i9300/9305 ( 4.4.4 kitkat). This rom has S5/Note4 features and works great im satisfied. No problems so far, no bugs, etc ^^
It comes with AROMA installer and lets you to choose which apps you want to install and which not.

perform a full data wipe means "Factory reset"?

yeah this means doing a "Factory reset", must be done throught Recovery mode, wipe data, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache.
Put ROM on your SD card, then enter Recovery Mode by pressing Home + Volume UP + Power buttons and ull have smth like:
Install Zip -> Choose Zip from /Storage/Sdcard (External SDcard) , Search for ur ROM file and start flashing :X
Flash the SuperSu .zip file same way as flashing ROM.
