[Q]Strange Battery Issues on ICS Port - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dear 10.1 forum,
i come to you from your little brother the Galaxy Tab 8.9.
Now i know this forum is for the 10.1 only but sadly we hardly have any devs for our device and we have run into quite a serious problem, so please hear me out.
One of our last devs made a port from the P7500XXLQ8_P7500OXALQ8 and P7510XABLPL_P7510UELPL ICS release.
Flashed fine and all was good but now we have really erratic battery behaviour!
The tab, better put the android OS, keeps thinking the battery is discharged, when however it still has loads of battery left. CWM can be booted and run for 5 hours or more.
So some of us let the battery run out completely (in cwm) then charged it fully and wiped stats. booted again and some now don't have any more issues. some still have some.
here is a pic from my discharge and you will quickly see that something is f*cked:

}
1. The tab starts out alright with normal drain while surfing, watching news etc
2. i turned the screen off for a while and had a massive drop in only a few minutes
3. turned it on again and the discharge seemed normal
4. switch to flightmode for the night (i always do that) and turned off the screen.
5. the next morning i woke up to a switched off tab. i turned it on and the android OS told me the battery was empty. i shut it down.
6. i then hooked it up to the charger (for only a minute) and proceeded to boot. the system then once again read the correct battery stats at about 60% just about where it was last night before i turned the screen off.
can anybody maybe shed any light on this issue?
this is affecting quite a lot of us in the 8.9 forum and is a pretty big issue as you can see.
some people even report of this problem carrying over to another ROM! which just completely baffels me...
please help your little brothers out
thanks a lot
pseudo

There is a very old thread, probably like 8 months old in the General section of this Forum. It its titled something like "for those with battery calibration issues" use the search feature. Out tabs had this issue with some roms (some still do) I used the method posted in that thread to solve the issue. My post is still there I'm sure so you could search my user name too. Good luck. Let me know how it goes.

Have seen some suggestions to use the battery calibration app. Is that the probable solution? Can u pls elaborate as many are affected with this rogue issue now.

This method of calibration worked for me a while back when my tab was displaying this exact same erratic battery reading. The op gives a thorough explanation but it amounts to:
1. Charge tab to 100%
2. Power down for 1 hour
3. Power on (my tab was at 96%)
4. Drain to 46%
5. Power of for 5 hours or over night.
Your tab should start reading the battery accurately after this. Good luck! If it works repost to your fellows in the 8.2 forum.

thanks for that link. Looks like an interesting thread !
PS: based only on reading that thread (no experimentation yet) it seems like the OP changed the procedure a little along the line... He added the new procedure to post #1, but it's also in other posts, e.g. #41 and #161.
QUOTING vlad_z (minor edit for clarity)
here is calibration procedure which was modified down this thread ...
1. in normal Android or CWM/recovery let it sit till battery in terminal will show less then 3700. The less you can get it the better. 3400 is probably absolute minimum.
Code:
The most sure way to check this is in terminal, execute this command:
cat /sys/class/power_supply/battery/voltage_now
or through adb:
adb shell cat /sys/class/power_supply/battery/voltage_now
your good discharged start point should be anything below 3700 (3.7V).
If your tab is telling that you have 0% capacity but voltage is more then
3700 then keep rebooting tab (this will refresh counter for a moment) or
just boot in CWM and let tab run/sit there for some time.
2. shut down tab and let it sit for 1 hour at least
3. plug it to charger and charge it for 5 hours.
(PS: does not matter whether tab is on or off in this phase)
4. disconnected charger and let it sit for 1 hour. (turned off)
5. boot up your tab and test it, it your battery still not calibrated you can flash back your backup and repeat calibration procedure.

drat...
why did I do what I did :-/
so, I was on P7510 port for P7310/P7300, and no battery issues.
I decided to do the battery calibration method described by vlad_z (the 2nd method, with 1 hour power-off at dead and at full battery).
Since then, my battery reading in Android is
- dropping rapidly (about 25% per hour of use)
- jumping higher after a system restart...
so I actually uncalibrated it using this method
I think I'll try vlad_z 1st method now, hope for the best.

Battery life after root is terrible?!

I rooted my Mini 2 days ago using the Universal root (Xploid) and my battery now lasts only 21hours on STANDBY with no calls, sms, data, gps, or wifi, and 9 out of those 21 hours was in Airplane mode as I was asleep!
Anyone else had this and found a solution?
Here is a screen shot of my battery usage..

I would normally get at least 2 days of normal usage, and probably 4 if I didnt use it hardly at all.
Cheers!
Have you turned your phone off since you rooted?
I noticed on mine that one of the tools used during the rooting process continued running on the phone afterwards and was using most of the CPU time, thus draining the battery (but it doesn't show up in the "Why is my battery dead" screen, as it's a linux process rather than an Android app)
Try turning it off and on again!
I have restarted but not actually powered down und up again, I would of thought this would be the same, but i'll try it!
Thanks!
Same situation for me. I rooted X10 mini Pro and battery works only one day without any calls and few SMS. I turn off the phone, try to change battery but still is battery life so bad.
But in my opinion battery is drain normal to the from 100% to 50% and that s least 18 Hours. From 50% to 1% least 3 Hours...
Again, I come from the hero so do not know what options you get on your recovery image...
But in there, if you do have this, let you battery get to around 5%, and wipe the battery stats, reboot, charge until full, turn off, charge until full, turn on, charge until full. This should help give you a nice full cycle. Worked for me anyways.
I had the same issues on my hero when I rooted, and have been browsing teh x10 forums as I am thinking about getting one for my fianceé.
I noticed the battery life after rooting is very bad also. Much worse the the MyTouch Slide. I'm was running ADWLauncher beacsue I don't care for the Stock Sony one. trying out Helix now to see if it is any better. This sucks because before I bought the phone I read about how good the battery is. Can rooting really make the battery drain faster?

no recovery image on X10 mini
no wipe battery stats option because of that
but thanks for your help anyway
Same as mine, after rooted, my phone drains battery too much, 3% in 1 hour.
I figured out that you should reboot your phone to bring it back to normal. I have reboot my phone and now it drains less battery, just 3% in 8 hour when the phone stand by.
Give it a try guys.

What do you mean, reboot? I've rebooted many times, I've even tried different batteries and still the same problem. Do you mean un-root? If so, how do you do that?
Mine seems to be ok after turning off and on again.
How did you try different batteries?? Or are you a Pro?
what do u have running in the background?
I noticed the diagnostic process runs constantly and takes up much of the CPU power after I rooted my X10 mini, and that seems to be the major cause for draining the battery.
I wonder if anybody else here has the same experience?
Hey try using Juice Defender .. it works like charm for me !!

I do not understand the problems of Android battery truth is that they are problematic.
I configured to use the savings SetCPU
Set cpu is not the sollution.....x10 mini has a weak cpu(its not verry weak but its not good)and if put its 600mhz down to 400 it starts lagging and down 400 it has parkinson.................follow my instructions( in my previous reply) and u will have better batery plz i want everybody solve their battery problem.......
The fix suggested by devilakos is (imho) needed on stock rom also when recovery is installed. I applied it to both my stock roms (see sig) and has a positive effect on battery life.
The problem is in the chargemon/charger configuration, independent of build.

[Q] How to improve battery life?

Hi guys! It's been a long time since I posted on the TFP forums.
Recently I noticed that the battery life of my TFP is not as good as I wished. DON'T misunderstand. I think that the battery life is pretty good while using it. Though I never measured it, I think I get at least 5-6 hrs (may be more) when I use it. BUT, the standby time is low and that is what bothers me. I get 2 to 2.5 days of standby time. So, if I charge it to 100% today and leave it aside, it will get discharged completely in about 2.5 days. But my iPod touch gets discharged in may be a week, if I don't use it often and I heard that the case is similar with the iPad (it too gets about a week's worth of standby time).
I really want to extend my TFP's standby battery life. It is a huge disappointment when I find out on Monday morning that my TFP is discharged since the battery drained completely over the weekend. My Droid Incredible 2 does a better job by idling the processor at the lowest freq. (245 MHz) when screen is off. And this translates to great standby time. Does the TFP not do that? Can I install an app that can do this for me?
Other issue is with WiFi hogging the battery as shown in the pictures below? Can I fix this? These are my 2 queries with regard to battery life.
Thanks in advance!

Have you tried changing your wifi setting to disconnect wifi during sleep (standby)? That seemed to help mine. My wifi is a battery hog too.
Go to settings > Asus Customized setting > (bottom) Disconnect Network During Sleep
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk 2
And... go to accounts%sync and turn off background data traffic...
If you are not using your prime u should turn off wifi and gps...
....and to add to all that above, why not actually turn it off when not in use.
I turn mine off when not in use because I know one thing for sure - Batteries die out faster the more charge/discharge cycles they go through.
Some tips to improve battery life span & keep them healthy -
Never let battery discharge below 4-5%
Never do charging until level drops to 5%.
When leaving the tablet unused for a couple of days/weeks, do a full charge before leaving it.
Do not keep the battery in continuous charge for more than 8 hours.
Hope this will help you in long run.

I actually do that. But still it doesn't turn the wifi off immediately after I sleep the TFP. I wish there was a profile manager for the tablets as I could easily do all of this as I do on my phone.

The idea of turning the tablet off is not what I want to do. I may be okay to do that on a weekend, but during the week I would like to have it on as I want to he able to use it immediately without waiting for it to turn on. Moreover, since competing devices and even my phone can manage to get better standby time, I am trying to improve its standby time.
I will try the profile manager I have on my phone. Also, I will try a CPU app that will put my TFP in the lowest MHz possible. Any suggestions for a good CPU app for this?

Thank you. This may help me a lot! It is interesting that even after choosing "disconnect network during sleep" the network doesn't disconnect immediately. Also, it still uses a lot of battery. Hopefully this will help.
the answers you seek are in general section. I already posted it up in the thread called .21 wifi battery drain. all my recent posts in that thread details what you can do and what's going on in your tablet. always remwber though, wifi will always report being the biggest battery drainer. the battery usage reporting in prime is flawed. you meed to use an app called Better Battery Stats. its free and here in xda. check out that other thread I mentioned. it has a bunch of things you can do n look for.

Cant get more than 2 hours screen time, but can can get 12hours standby.

Anyone have any ideas what to look for? I dont think I have a battery drain because with the screen off I lose about .5-1% every hour or so. But when im using the phone, the battery seems to drain very fast. The most screen time I have gotten is 2hrs, and its usually less than that.
Brightness does not seem to matter, I always have auto off and have tried brightness at 20%, 30%, 50% and 60%.
Use this application to locate Battery Drain https://play.google.com/store/apps/...mNvbS5XYXphQmUuYW5kcm9pZC5CYXR0ZXJ5RHJhaW4iXQ..
Update to the latest firmware or put a custom ROM.
The problem has been resolved. I had also a fast drain battery.
I even had the screen On during the night.
When I closed the eyes it was Off, but in the morning at my wake up it was On
Thanks I'll try the battery drain app.

The battery of my SG3 drains so fast I'm evne thinking of returning it (bought it yesterday). It can't be normal, it's almost like my old iPhone 3G. It goes like 1% per minute or so while browsing.
Did this fix and disabled WiFi, no luck.
Gonna try that app and see if it helps.
I think mine is like that as well. Maybe 1% minute when using heavily. Also thinking selling it. Can't return, bought on Craig list.
Very strange behavior. Something must be wrong with your soft or hardware because this is smartphone with the best battery (except razr maxx).

I am experiencing the same thing since i flashed omega rom v13. i was getting 5/5.5 hours of screen time on stock Samsung rom before i flashed. Right now the battery drains 1% every 2mins when the screen is on :/ (brightness has alwsys been around 20/30%)
Only thing that has changed since i flashed is the fact that i had wifi off during sleep on stock but now its always on. I have tried setting it to always off but it automatically switches to always on everytime i do it for some reason.

I believe this is normal with new devices. It takes time before Li-Ion batteries "adjust".
Flashed my phone to another rom, JB 4.1.1 and it's the same. So no, it's not software issue. Hardware? I don't think so... the phone is new and works just fine. The problem is the battery that it's new, or maybe is damaged... who knows (probably not).
I have the same problem. I see people post threads the battery, that lasts 2 days !
I'm thinking of buying a new battery, just to check if it is a battery thing, if the battery is ****ed up or something... The Galaxy S3, should last for atleast one day! and I can't get even that! is there a fix for that? I can post my battery use from the settings if necessary.
There are loads of threads about battery drain, a lot of it relates to Samsung bloatware and background services like face awake etc, you just need to explore your phone, learn how to use it, and see it up properly.....it is not an iPhone...it requires independent thinking skills
I'm experiencing the same problem on CM9.1. Try draining the battery fully twice. That'll calibrate it and improve battery life.

That's pretty much what everyone is saying. I've never drained it, so I'm wating. Hopefully it'll work.
It can't be software because I changed ROMs like 5 times, everytime installing a different one.

Since two days, I'have the same problem.
Before Wednesday, I'haven't issue about battery drain. My phone battery worked more than 2 days idle with about 4hours screen ON and 1 hour voice calls.
But now, it works fine between 100% and 60% and then, battery drain starts. Just a few hours for the phone to indicate that it's remain 5% of power.
Do you think they are a background daemon running sometimes (why since two days?) ? Or it's a network problem ?
I'll try to wipe my battery stats and fully charge the battery.
Currently, my SGS3 International works with the latest UK firmware : PDA/XXBLG8 - MODEM/XXBLH1

Battery drained with JB..

I see that the major cause of battery usage is the WiFi, exactly like it was on WW28, the worrying thing is that I also spotted that during the night, the Prime lost 2%, even though all stuff was turned off with the Prime in sleep
All Sync, WiFi and all the things that could use WiFi are turned off and all "checks" are set in settings that could be checked/unchecked.
On WW28 and using the modded prop, I never lost a % during night.. so maybe the only way to have it working good again is to have a new prop suitable for the JB (I asked in the proper thread in Dev. forum)
Any other experiencing battery drain with JB? And especially a higher WiFi battery usage again?

The difference might be explained by the fact that if you use more "brightness" than I do, then the percentage of what screen and wifi use may vary.
My screen brightness is 20% then my value for screen is lower than yours and the battery higher, because that's the proportional values.. I think.
That's the best part, the tablet is usually 1-25% brightness the majority of the time. Prior to JB, similar usage would have wifi taking close to or above 2-1 ratio. <3 this update
I've found that I've got about 5% increase in battery life. There are new Power Saver section in settings so you might want to mess with those and see if it helps. From what I've seen it's really only to turn stuff off at a user defined power %. Still, check it out.

Thanks, but I did that.
I found a bug too.
When you change the power settings from the quick settings window in the "desktop", the changes are not recognized in the "power setting" you refer too, you have also to change there.
So if I choose balanced one place I have to do the same in the other too.
I see only that the WiFi is much faster at start when waking up from standby, but I think there is something wrong in these power settings.
I never lost 2-3% at night when the Prime was on WW28... and the battery/WiFi seems to drain faster now..
Just let things settle. These things takes time after updates. Its too early for any accurate readings anyways.

Remember that we do not use all same settings, and/or use devices same way. Making a comparison is only possible on the same device and the same setup/use.
I am happy that you are seeing improvements.
I will see in a week what is the result for me.
How could I imagine they would ever get it straight
Bad, it's worse than on .21.

Aye, as far as I can notice it's draining a tiny bit quicker. I keep mine at max brightness IPS+ (except for late at night every now and again) but don't get more than an hour or two's use a day on average. Usually go anywhere from three to six days without charging, depending on how forgetful I am with turning WiFi off.
I can't factory reset like you until there's a new root method, but also like you I factory reset and restored only specific apps' data so the update would go as smoothly as possible. To no avail lol, but oh well. I'll give some more in-depth info as I have time to.

[Solved] Battery half way, S2 shuts down

I was wondering if someone can tell me why my S2 is shutting down all the time.
A few weeks ago the following started happening. If I use my phone intensively like for an hour or so it just shuts down. When I try to restart it, it says the battery is almost empty. Even though it showed it had at least 50% juice before the shutdown.
The funny part is that if I don't use my phone a lot (only a few calls) it lasts about 2 days and the battery goes down towards 0% as expected. And when I use it intensively again, it shuts down.
So before blaming the battery and buying a new one I was wondering if something else can be the cause and I need to send it back to Samsung.
I was using cm10.1 until 2 days ago. I'm running stock now and the same issue is still there.
Re: Battery half way, S2 shuts down
Check whether or not the battery is loose in the slot. If it is then stick a paper to tighten it.
Other reason could be your battery cell is damaged. It cannot hold the current when some activity like wifi or processor is running.
I had faced not exactly the same but something similar to this only.
Replaced the battery and all okay now.

Thanx for your reply. I have a friend who has a s2. I'll let him test my battery for a day. If he has the same result I'll just order a new one. Might as well get the bigger one.

I had the same issue. It turned out to be a battery problem, so I just ordered a new one.. I mean, a daily use of 5 hours over one and a half years WILL kill the effectiveness of a battery

Thanx. Just ordered a new battery and will let you know if it works out.
Re: Battery half way, S2 shuts down
I had the exact same problem as you, phone would have about 50-60% battery, and after using it for a bit it would power off, and when it rebooted it had like 5% battery. I bought a new 2000mah battery and it fixed the problem.

Re: Battery half way, S2 shuts down
I ordered the 2000mah battery and am running it now for 3 days without any problems. Thank you all for the feedback.
I've been experiencing the same problem with my SGS2's battery and noticed that it is getting bloated. I purchased a new one to prevent severe damage on my mobile phone.
