Hey guys long time DINC user here going to be upgrading soon. I prefer HTC and dont like the razrs and such that are out. I looked at the new DINC 4G but am not too impressed even though it's newer. The Rezound is looking good to me so far. Just wanted to see if you guys (current Rezound owners) think its still a good upgrade even though its been out a while. I just want to make sure I'm getting a phone that'll last the next 2 years without getting too outdated .

This phone still is one of the best in Verizon's line-up, the screen is amazing and the radios are awesome. It's technical specs are still very respectable and right up there with the flagship models. So as long as you are willing to stay on ICS "officially" for the next 2 years I think this phone is still a solid investment because HTC/Verizon likely will not be upgrading this device to Jelly Bean or above, although I do expect ROM developers to have JB and whatever else the future hold for Android available for this device for some time.
I also had a DINC, and upgraded to the Rezound. It's an awesome phone - a worthy successor to the DINC - with the only real flaw being battery life. It's not a huge problem for me, since I have the ability to charge basically wherever I am, but the screen (oh what a beautiful, beautiful screen!) really sucks the juice.
As mentioned, the radios are fantastic. The screen is absolutely amazing (best I've ever seen on a phone, including iPhones), the hardware gives great performance, and it scales well. Size is a bit bulky, especially if you've got a thick case on it, but unless having the thinnest phone is a thing for you, it won't matter. Outside of a case it's really not that bad. Camera is awesome - better than my point-and-shoot.
Development has picked up with chad working out the radio interface layer, and once HTC drops the kernel source code for the new OTA, we should get some really nice AOSP ROMs and dare I say Jelly Bean ROMs a bit after that.
So overall, I say go for it. It's a great phone, and I'm very happy with my choice.
Yes, unfortunately your choices are limited, especially if you prefer HTC (as I do). Rezound is still the best option all the way around, but I daresay the new Incredible would probably do fine as well. The thing is, there's nothing on the horizon that has even been hinted at for HTC this fall, except the possibility of some oversize "phablet".
Me personally.. Nah I'd go for the SGS3 or wait for one of the new Nexus.

I would wait until we get more info about the DLX, the phablet someone mentioned above. if it has a 5" 1080p screen and the quad core krait processor like the info we have now states, I will be all over it, and im sure many others will too.
There's a lot of pretty slick offerings right now for Verizon, but I love my Rezound and would buy it again. Battery life isn't ad bad as people make it out to be. I would definitely recommend it.

Rezound is the only Verizon phone I'd buy right now. Some people will say SGS3 or Nexus, but I've been too burned by Samsung to even consider them an option.
I would definitely get a S3 or wait, rezound is awesome phone and i love mine, but its a old chipset inside, the screen destroys battery life and it does not have nfc. I would not use my upgrade on one personally but get one off contract used and then get something really nice this holiday.
It's a pretty good phone, but there are better on Verizon. People are right about the great screen and radios, but the battery life is pretty bad and it has an older chipset that won't perform quite as well as newer phones like the Dinc 4G even if it is clocked to 1.5Ghz. Also, Sense is more of a hindrance than a help on ICS imo. While it was helpful and helped supplement what was missing in GB, it just gets in the way of ICS and basically tries to cover up functionality that's already built in with their own implementation of that functionality which may/may not be better.
Once we get kernel source, which is hopefully sooner rather than later, we'll have some pretty solid AOSP ROMs and I'll probably like the phone more because of it haha. If it were up to me right now, though, I'd spring for the G-Nex. I actually had one before the Rezound and kinda regret going to the Rezound. The devs here definitely make it better, though.

I would say no. Phone is great but HTC and Verizon are making it fail. I hate skins and hopefully the next Nexus is like the Nexus 1/Incredible(Phone I had before). I think I'm getting old because I don't want to mess with roms anymore. Next phone for me will be a Nexus and probably not on Verizon. Beats Audio sounds like **** too on this phone. Left channel is fudged.

Definitely get the GS3. It is leaps and bounds better than the Rezound. It is thinner, lighter, faster, 2x the battery life, and the same price.
While I like my Rezound, it's already outdated. That's just the nature of smartphones sadly. I would either get an S3 or wait to see what the iPhone 5 and Droid RAZR HD are like. Definitely don't settle on a Rezound given the other choices you have.
The Rezound is still a pretty good phone. But if you are buying a brand new phone, get the SGS3. It easily spanks the Rezound. It has the S4 vs S3, that's a HUGE difference right there. It's got a much bigger battery and everybody says the battery will go at least a day and a half where as the Rez barely gets 8-10 hours. Both screens are great, Rez's is a little better though. Biggest difference is the fact there are no devs for the Rez any more and there are tons for the SGS3. If you like flashing a lot, you'll hate the Rez. If you dont, then it wont matter.

Amazon has it for $99 with an upgrade.
I would highly recommend the rezound as I have no complaints with it. I am speaking from a STOCK UNROOTED point of view as well as the DEV COMMUNITY.

The Rezound is a wonderful phone with a great development community, I would go ahead and say that you should wait if possible for this year's Nexus devices.

Hey guys, been out for a good minute, but I'm about to buy a new phone. I had been wanting the HTC thunderbolt, as I've had good success hacking other htc phones.
I just wanted to make sure that its a good phone for modding

It comes out in November 2011.
droid charge is better than the thunderbolt. they're both noticeably weaker than any modern phones, but the thunderbolt is generally regarded as a poor investment. Charge has a pretty good development community.
From the benchmarks Ive seen, the charge isn't better than it at all. But the Droid Bionic is in many ways. Mostly with it being a dual core processor, and more ram.
I went in to a Verizon store today to check em out first hand, and I'm torn between the two. I really do like htc sense, and I might eventually change it, but there are enough skins and sense based roms available to keep me happy. However, the Bionic scored like 2400 on quadrant, and its a bit snappier.
But it doesn't have sense on it, oh, and it also doesn't quite have the "quality" feel to it that most HTC phones have. its a bit too light and feels a bit like cheap plastic. idk. but its definitely faster.
Any suggestions guys?
Thunderbolt or Droid Bionic?
Does the bionic have a big modding community?
Reason I didn't mention the bionic is that not only does it not have a good devoloping community, rooted Verizon motoblur devices (not ROM'd ones tho) have a really bad track record of getting majority screwed up every time there's a software update. It also has a horrible looking pentile display.
Oh, and it has a locked bootloader too, so don't expect a lot of ROMs for quite a while.
EDIT: actually, i take that back - the bionic apparently has CM7 moving along very nicely.
So now it turns out that the screen is broken on my Evo3D (bottom part of the touchscreen is irresponsible to touches) this is after the whole motherboard got replaced after I had the phone for a month, so my carrier will probably let me have a new phone, though I might have to cough up 50-100$ myself...
Not sure what I should get though, so I'd appreciate some input!
I could get an Evo3d for free, but my faith is HTC just isn't what it used to be. It's not just the poor quality of the Evo3D I'm talking about (the touchscreen issue seems to be fairly common) it's also the fact that HTC is making us Evo3D owners wait until at least summertime to get ICS update, which is just unacceptable for what was sold as a top of the line phone...
Moto RAZR
They'd give me the Droid RAZR for 50 bucks, and I'm pretty tempted, since it looks like a nice phone. A great SAMOLED+ QHD screen (Yes I know about the pentile), expandable up to 48gb, a pretty good camera, and super thin Kevlar surface all line up for a pretty sweet package. The only thing kinda holding me back, is that the SGX540 GPU in it is kinda old, battery life is supposed to be just average, and the camera, while good, isn't as good as in the Samsung GSII or iPhone 4S.

I miiight be able to get a Galaxy Nexus or Galaxy Note if I cough up 100-200$ but not sure if I should go for it. Yes, it has an awesome screen and ICS, but whatever Android phone I get will have ICS in the next 3 months or so. The downside is a kinda old CPU/GPU combo (OMAP4430 and SGX540), a 5 mp camera, average battery life and only 16gb storage.

Depending on what I'm willing to spend, they'll let me have an iphone4 for free, or 4S if I put down some cash. Between 50 and 200$ all depending on the 16/32/64 gb model. Now I know the iPhone option is kinda controversial, and if you had asked me a year ago, I'd never get an iPhone. But lately, I've gotten kinda disillusioned with Android. Even on a high end model like the Evo3D or SGSII isn't as smooth as iOS, and lag, even if very slight, is almost always present if you go to a list, for example. Theres also the issue of hardware quality and service. The last six months I've spent a couple dozen hours either trying to get an Android phone fixed, fixing issues with it, or taking it to repairs hops and waiting days or weeks for it to be repaired. With Apple you don't have to deal with all of that. They DO give really, really great service. If you take a broken phone to the Apple store, they often just outright replace it, and that counts for something IMHO.
I've had an ipad2 for the past 5 months, and I've really gotten to appreciate how fast and smooth the experience is, and how everything just works. The other advantages would be iMessage/FaceTime, which is really cool, having my phone work great together with my iPad, and the whole Apple ecosystem. Cameras are also top of the line, from what I've seen, and battery life is really good.
I know of the downsides with getting an iPhone, the biggest one would be the 3.5 inch screen. No matter how awesome, bright and sharp it is, it will take some getting used to, to go from a 4.3 inch screen to a 3.5 inch screen.
Other phones, like a Samsung or HTC are also available for me to get, this is just my top3. I'd really appreciate your input, and let me know what phone you'd get next in my situation... Thanks!
Based on your phone listing's looks like you have the GSM version. I would go with either the GN or the Note if it is not to big for you.
The GSM GN has pretty good battery life from what I have seen. The CDMA is not as good which is that I own. Needs the extended battery on CDMA to get decent life. There are a lot of people with the GSM version who get an average of 5 hours on-screen time. To me that is some pretty good battery life.
The downside like you said is only 16gigs of storage on the GSM GN without an SD slot. I just do not get that at all! Why only 16 on a device that cannot be expanded! Luckily the CDMA version came with 32gigs.
I owned the CDMA EVO 3D back in the day, then went to the Epic 4G touch which blows the 3D away. The GN is more in a league with the SGS2 then the EVO 3D. The GN is super smooth.
I personally stay away from Moto's, especially if you like to flash things...

There's no way of telling about the updates. Google's last flagship device has been completely ignored and won't get ICS. Doesn't really matter to me as I have faith in the xda community to get any updates on to it.

Nexus S. Some of the gsm nexus s models got ics and there was a leak of an ics updates for the 4g... After that no updates..... Yet...
Any high end HTC, that is if you like and value Dev support here on XDA

Galaxy Nexus or Galaxy S2 i9100. Those two phones are by far the best supported phones development wise on this site. It's only going to get bigger with the GS2 likely decreasing if the GS3 makes a big enough impact.
No HTC phone besides the Sensation compares development wise right now. A few legacy devices here and there, but for the specs, the two phones I mentioned above cannot be beat right now.
I'm in the same boat, well I'm selling mine, I'm so disappointed in HTC, too many freezing up and restarting by itself on stock rom, moving on

Thanks! The one thing I REALLY liked about the Evo was the QHD screen. So I really don't want to go back to an 800*480 screen. The Moto Razr and Galaxy Nexus have pretty much the same CPU/GPU right? OMAP 4430/60

They more or less are the same CPU. I would head over to the Galaxy Nexus forums and learn more about their processor and how it actually is a pretty remarkable in performance. Google picked out nice specs for their flagship.

SGSII or EVO 3D is top choices out there iPhone is all brand and behind the curve otherwise I would take a photon or over iPhone LOL

It's no slouch at all. It's just older which puts you under the illusion that it is weak. Compared to other dual core devices, there aren't huge differences.

Sold mine on Ebay. Bought a Epic4G touch. Not looking back. The only thing I appreciated about the Evo4G was the development community. Other than that, I'm getting twice the battery on a larger screen.
That would be my vote. And I paid full price for the Epic. Worth it.

Evo3D.
evo 3d seems very cheap now for a (once high end) mid range phone.
I've had nothing but good luck with my Evo 3d and love it, only thing i dont like is the flimsy backing plate. From reading your post i cant help but ask were you rooted? There are tons of great roms and app mods available in the forums here, all solve numerous issues and improve upon stock in any number of ways.
As far as choosing a phone goes, if you can get a new 3d free I'd stick it out and wait to see what's available withing the coming months, MWC just finished up and there were tons of greats devices announced.
Otherwise GSII gets my vote.
despite many folks being down on the specs of the phone (really did you think a 4.0 inch screen device would have hd resolution? ) i still like it a lot
just trying to gauge how many plan to pick it up, so i can get some idea about the potential size (i know it wont be big) of the root community

verizon tells me i'm eligible for an early upgrade and i'm going to hold onto my org dinc until i see the price drop on the 4g lte, as i'm sure they'll try to butt**** you with price.
this is the only phone i'm considering because i've held a gnex and razr, to efing big for my taste and i don't want to fell like i'm carrying a brick around in my pocket.
and the removable battery and expandable memory are a big plus too.
4G arrives here this summer, along with my last "new every two year" upgrade option. I have enjoyed My Incredible and will take a hard look at it's big brother.
I am not excited. This phone misses big time. The original droid incredible was the king of the Hill when it came out, but this budget phone is a joke to the line. Underpowered CPU without the image sensor chip and the lack of HD display combined with HTC's heavy insistence that this phone is not from the One line makes me sorely disappointed.
I wish everyone who buy this phone the best, but I will be holding on to my original incredible until Verizon actually gets a One series phone.

I'm in. I've tried the rezound and the nexus. Didn't like either one of them for different reasons. I kept wanting to come back to my Inc 2. I look at it this way. Its like my Inc 2 but with 4g and some other nice upgrades. I personally don't need the fastest, biggest, highest Res, etc. Functionally and battery life are my most important things. But to each there own...

I'm looking real close at this phone. I really like Sense and the size is right for carrying around at work. I'll wait until I can actually have one in my hands before I pull the trigger though.
I'll be getting this phone. Droid-life reports that it'll be priced at 149$, which sounds like a likely price for it. I'm hoping it get's decent developer support.

This will be my next phone. Loved the Inc2, it was my favorite phone of all time, but I can't do without 4G. Tried going back to the Inc2 for a week, but I've become accustomed to the LTE speeds here in Vegas, and so I switched back to my Rezound. I think that 4" is the sweet spot for screen size, and don't see the need for a HD screen at that size. 1.2ghz S4 should be plenty fast, and great on battery life. Camera doesn't matter to me, I haven't been let down by my Rezound when I need to snap something quickly. If the battery life is anything like what the AT&T OneX is showing with it's S4/LTE combo, I'm all in. I'll be buying it off-contract.

I am seriously considering this phone. I was going to wait and see which devs were going to pick it up. If you two are getting one, then I am definately getting one.
My only worry is that the phone is not a world phone. I travel outside of the US frequently and the INC 2 has been wonderful. But, I have been renting the MiFi devices from xComGlobal for international travel recently, so the world phone capabilities are not as important.

yeah, i dont know about the world phone stuff...i know the rezound has been gotten to work on gsm networks (lte is gsm based afaik) as have some moto phones...but its not as simple as just changing modes (pretty involved i think)
This phone might be my only option on Verizon in the near future. I for one, do not like the ridiculously large screens. 4 inches is great, larger...not so much. The trend right now seems to be 4.5' or more. No matter how thin that is, it's still too big.

I have been eligible for upgrade since February and will most likely pick this up as soon as it's available.
I'll e getting this sometime in July when my contract is up.
I get a laugh every time I hear/read people saying this phone is a failure, its a beast of a phone.

I'm still on the original Incredible, after owning it since launch day over two years ago I'm looking for something to upgrade too. Galaxy Nexus is huge, the Rezound has an S3 with Sense 3.6, and I want something with ICS out the door. And the S4 is looking really great for power and battery efficiency. I love the size of my Inc, and this looks perfect. If you dev for this phone, I will definitely be getting this, as a user of your work on the Incredible. Warm TwoPointTwo was an amazing rom back in the day.
In short, I just want a 2012 HTC phone. With 2012 specs, not last years models that are 6 months old by now.
Hey guys i cant decide if i should get the sgs3 or stick with my rezound. with money aside, what would you guys do? why is the sgs3 so hyped and is it even going to be better?
the rezound has 1.5 ghz dual core while sgs3 had 1.4 dual core. both have 8mp cameras.
idk they just seem similar and idk why this phone has so much anticipation.
any feedback would help
It's all what you really enjoy personaly I loved My epic 4G touch (sprints galaxy s2) and had to swap because sprint dropped signal in my area I like the rezound but I belive Samsung is geared to what I like and they give you more freedom on your phone.

i've been through like 6 rezound so usually i can convince VZW to replace me with a new device. I can't decide though if it would be smart if i should try to get the samsung or just keep the rezound

If you test the signal in stores or something and it's good id go for it. Grabbing your the gs3.

well the speed of the dual core might be similar but they're running different chips, whihc apparently makes quite a difference in speed and supposedly in battery life too. but one thing samsung has had issues with on cdma from a lot of people's experiences i've read about is poor signal. for whatevre reason they seem to have trouble making good cdma radios.
If you don't like sense, want a thinner phone go with the gs3. If you want a better screen and sense stay with the Rez. I am 90% sure I am sticking with the Rez for now at least but I'll see what else is lined up for the fall/holiday time frame.
I think the biggest thing to consider between the two devices is the size, weight, and the battery life. SG3 has an edge on all of these 3 areas.
the screen on the SG3 can be too big for some people but if you like large phone, then it's the obvious choice. While SG3 is 1.2, it should actually runs faster due to the newer cpu.
personally if I would buying a new phone, I would choose SG3 over Rezound simply because it has newer technology and hopefully will support future os upgrade. The advantage with rezound of course is the ROM development.

if i had the money to burn id buy the sg3. i've found sense much more bloated than it used to be on my dinc and i believe its actually gotten worse rather than better. I never thought i'd say it but id say bring on touchwiz(even though u might be better getting the nexus still)

I upgrade in august and I will probably either go Incredible 4g or go for a nexus. The samsung interface doesn't appeal to me and I am not a hardware nazi. Give me a phone that doesn't have interface lag and I am happy. the most powerful apps i use is probably my browser.
The sgsiii just doesn't look good as a phone looks wise. also after watching some of the break tests and system teardown videos, I'm afraid its gonna be as fraile as the iphone 3g was.
I recommend waiting to see what Google does with ASUS this fall-ish. The padfone looks pretty awesome.

Cause its a great phone with at least another 18 months of good life left. ICS hasn't even hit yet, and when it does there will be a huge resurgence of development. The screen is still the best one out there IMO, and I really love HTCs design style.
That, and the SGSIII is fugly. Extremely fugly.
Galaxy S3 has the Snapdragon S4 chipset, while the Rezound has the S3 chipset. With equal clock speeds, the S4 can be up to 50% faster than the S3. Overall the GS3 will blow the Rezound out of the water in terms of speed. It also has twice as much RAM and a larger battery. If you could get one for $200, I would do it. With its specs the GS3 seems like a phone that will still be decent 2 years down the line. I'm not so certain about my Rezound 2 years later. At full price I probably would just stick with the Rezound. The only two negatives for the GS3 would be the really large size, and the screen quality is likely a small step down from the Rezound (although 0.5" bigger). One other potential negative is TouchWiz, though I don't know how it compares to Sense 3.6 or 4.0.
S3 is bigger, faster, and has better battery life. I'm dropping the Rezound for it. UI lag drives me insane, and Sense seems like it will always have it, even though its only a split second lag from pressing phone and loading the dialer, I want instant loads like the iphone, and Sense doesn't do it.
I'm currently debating whether to pick up the Galaxy Note 2 or the HTC DNA. I love the form factor of the DNA and it's 1080p, sense has always been of interest as well. I currently own a Galaxy Nexus, the new Nexus 4 is kind of underwhelming so I think I'm gonna take a break from the google line of devices.

I looked at both before I got the DNA. The Galaxy Note 2 was just to big for me. The screen on the DNA is much better. The also I prefer Sense over Touchwiz and Sense 4+ is the best yet. The biggest problem people have with DNA is the 16gb of space on the phone. You can easily get around this since the phone has usb-otg built in. With an adapter you plug in any size USB device. I have a dongle with a 64gb microsd card. It also works with TWRP recovery so you can backup your phone to it if you choose to unlock your phone.
The DNA is also a world phone, correct? I live in Pakistan (where all the networks are GSM) and plan on having a friend of mine bring a DNA over from the states. I've read that they're unlocked out of the box and can be used on virtually any network.

Yups, u should be able to use it in Pakistan. All GSM frequency/band are UNLOCKED in this phone.

My previous phone was also a GNex.
DNA is at another level to GNex. Quad-core, Bigger and better screen , better sound quality, better camera, better battery life.
The only thing GNex has over DNA is custom ROMs. But you should try out ViperDNA. It kicks ass !!

The thing that sold me was the 1080p screen... Everything looks phenomenal on this thing. I was nervous about the battery life but that had ended up impressing me also. This has honestly be the best phone I have ever owned
man you guys are getting me pumped. I might have the phone by the 3rd week of march.
The only thing that bothers me is the Verizon logo tbqh.
I bought the note 2 but after two weeks it was just too big. Swapped it for this and never looked back!
For what it's worth I came from galaxy nexus and get easily double the battery life on this phone.

I'm surprised to see so many gnex owners made the switch to DNA. That says a lot about the quality of the phone in my opinion. I'm not surprised you guys love the phone though, I guess its just that I've seen so much (unnecessary in my opinion) debate about all the things wrong with sense and HTC from gnex users.
I'm one of the rare people that loves both, but if I wasn't allowed more than one interface it would definitely be sense.
In regards to the OP, how serious of a hardcore android gamer are you?

I came from a GNEX and haven't looked back. I miss the roms but it is honestly a relief to be able to sit on one rom for a month with no issues and stellar battery life.

I'm going to provide a somewhat tenuous dissenting opinion. I'm coming from a Gnex, and picked up a DNA last night, which I'm considering switching to full time. After 24 hours with it, I'm quite pleased by the hardware, and utterly horrified by the software.
Sense is, in my opinion, complete and utter crap. There's no other way for me to put it, I hate almost everything about it. It's as if they locked several caffeinated adolescent boys in a room and told them to design a skin while watching episodes of Transformers. Viper is making it somewhat tolerable, but man am I anxiously awaiting AOSP. That said... the hardware, oh the hardware. The screen is simply gorgeous, and the battery life is easily twice what I got with my Gnex. In addition, I have 2-3 bars of 4G at work where I had 0-1 bars of 3G before.
The hardware advantages this has over the Gnex are sufficient to keep me from selling this thing in the hopes that AOSP is coming soon. If anyone reading is on the fence, and isn't sure how they'll feel about Sense, I'd advise waiting for prices to come down. I'll probably still pop my SIM into the Gnex here and there to experience Android as it was intended to be.
I too came from the gnex and while I loved the phone itself and devolopment. I couldnt stand the poor reception and battery life. I got the DNA on launch day and have never regreted it. battery life is great and so is the radio reception! As far as development goes you cant beat Viper rom been running it for a good while now and dont even miss AOKP anymore .I am sure you will love this phone!

As much as I hated it when I first switched, I actually kind of like sense now.... But maybe because every phone I have had before this one I ran CM or some form of aosp and the "newness" of sense keeps me interested. I really LOVE sense camera especially with the mod to make compression next to minimal. I get amazing pictures that the aosp (bless its soul) could never produce.

I actually don't game all that much, I might start though with that beautiful 1080p 5" screen. That said, I'm aware that many games don't work just yet, if that's the point you're insinuating.

This is exactly how I feel. Having first owned a G2x and then a Galaxy Nexus, the untainted google experience is starting to get a little stale. This is why I hope the DNA and sense will distract me for at least a year or longer... especially if Sense 5 is on the way.
Can only add to what others have said. I also came from the Nexus. Before that I had the incredible and sense.
The piss poor reception is what ultimately made me pay full retail for the DNA. Only downfall is the 16GB memory and annoying WiFi notification.
This phone is amazing though.

I just recently made the jump from the Galaxy Nexus to the Droid DNA. I resisted Sense at first being so used to the Stock UI but have come to really enjoy it. This phone is amazing though. Beautiful screen and very snappy performance. Anyone know how easily the back cover scratches? I prefer the naked feel and don't really want a case. In short it was a good move to go to the DNA.
