Hi there,
Does anyone have a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 or know where I can get the launcher apk from? I want to test it on my HTC Flyer. I really like the way you can split the screens so you can do two things at once! Anyone care to point me to the apk?
Thanks all,
Kim
EDIT: Ok I found this http://www.onskreen.com/cornerstone/ and it even includes source code but how do I install onto a HTC Flyer? Anyone out there know how maybe? Would be quite cool to have this!
Kim
thats a no-go. its highly integrated in their framework, so to make this run you need to start learning how to program and develop in java, and when you experienced enough, you can start porting the functionality to work outside samsungs framework, which probably is in 3-5 years time. and that on top 1-2 years development for you alone to do it all.

What about if I try http://www.onskreen.com/cornerstone/ on my Leedroid rom installed on my HTC Flyer?
if you are a good kernel developer, you might get it done in 1 month or so in your spare time its not an app, its a kernel and framework environment.

Got it, would be nice if this can be made into some kind of .apk.. I'm just dreaming now! If you include the framework into the apk it might work? I know some java / android dev, I'm going to look into this.
It does't work like that. The Framework is a major piece of the ROM built during compile time and is ROM specific. It sits between the apps and the GUI. It ties into almost everything on the ROM and supports widgets, apps, etc.
Check this out for basic information and how it gets built and used.

best is always to go from stock, as it forces you to implement things and know what you're doing.

Hey Guys,
I'd like to get involved with making Android ROMs as well. I have a Droid and would LOVE to make my own Droid ROMs . I am already a student software developer so I don't mind getting into the nitty gritty, in fact, the deeper the better, so I can fully learn how to build and work with Android. I also hope to be able to make Android apps eventually too. I know Java and Perl fairly well and have recently started C and C++.
Any suggestions for where to start would be greatly appreciated, i.e. tutorials, videos, guides, what languages I need to know, what tools I should use (eclipse, etc., with what plugins, etc.). Thanks a bunch, and let me know if you guys have ideas for apps you'd like to see on the Market .

i am trying to compile from aosp. since i have no programming experience at all, it is a slow learning process so far. my ubuntu has redo and git running perfect now. i have eclipse working but have not used it at all yet. androidsdk 2.2 adb is fine but fastboot is a hassle.
so far, two froyo alphas both flashed but buggy. not one decent tutorial that makes the kernel compile/framework/gapps process clear
My AOSP 2.2 for passion/n1 alpha2 is pretty darn solid now. It took mushing together instructions from 5 incomplete tutorials to fill in the blanks.
What a great feeling to have a ROM not kanged. The Repo/Git tool has gotten easy to use after several long sessions using it in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.
Anyone on the same OS, I suggest you research and install both Java 1.5 & 1.6 and get use to switching between the two. Also, I have not yet used Eclipse but it isinstalled and it works with SDK.
The Android Open Source site does a decent job of walking you through Repo...Git...and getting the source. After getting that far, I stumbled through setting up a "vendor tree" and looking through all the folders and files to see what it was all about. Much of it was totally over my head. But after attempting several crap builds, the "compile" process is sinking in a bit.

for getting source to compile ^^^
I compiled my first ROM from source FRF91 for N1 w/root su+busybox+de-odex+gapps. The time of my AOSP -b master sync was around 9:00a pst, 07/10/10. This is not a "kang" of Modaco or CyanogenMod but I credit both and all teamdouche since I regularly need to look into their work to teach myself. Thank you dferreira and jr33 for not flaming my many noob questions and also thanks to dsixda for his reqularly updated android kitchen.
I still can't do much customizing and adding features because I still have to get better at too many things...sorry. Feel free to report bugs and I hope some of you could tell me how to fix simple things or add features by directing me to resources.
I am using themes by micromod777 for FRF91 that do work on this ROM.
Added:
Original Boot Animation (aka Holiday)
APN list
Trackball wake/unlock (crimsondr)
NFL app (jlevy73)
AccuWeather widget (allows multiple locations)
Logger app (michael.novakjr)
If you don't have the new radio installed, fastboot flash radio first.
Flash the ROM .zip after full wipe.
Remember to to do a nandroid backup first.

thanks for trying out this rom guys. it is not a cut-n-paste. i really did compile from source. it took 5 alphas to get to this release. it is like a hobby for me to try and solve puzzles and that's how i tackled making the rom. i have zero programming knowledge and have fun relaxing trying to follow steps in a process to accomplish a goal.
When will you work on your desire rom project again? We really need someone to work on desire port beside paul. hopefully you can challenge yourself and make that desire rom perfect.

How about compiling Stk.apk and extract the dictionaries from the LatinIMEGoogle.apk and putting them in the corresponding locations in your LatinIME source. That will get you more layouts than the Google keyboard and still all the features since they have now been included in the AOSP version. The Stk.apk (SIM Toolkit) is also useful for a lot of people, and only work AOSP based roms, and might possibly drive more people towards this rom if they want the stock experiance.
It should simply be a matter of running 'make -j4 LatinIME' and 'make -j4 Stk' with the -j flagset to your number of cores + 1 or 2.

I'm working on the same kind of project you are. The problem I'm running into is that every app that tries to access GPS location FCs on me. Did you ever come across this? Maps won't run at all, and I've had to set my homepage to something other than Google since it FCs the browser when it calls for location. I've got a working build otherwise!

Very cool that you have a working build environment. What OS are set up in?
I do not get the error you describe. Run a logcat either with ADB or using Logger from Market. Reading the log makes it easier to ask for help based on the specific errors. That is what I do. Ask the pros for advice. Some are helpful. Most ignore us noobs.

I'm in the exact same boat, just jumped into android about a month or two ago with my nexus (from an iPhone 2g, no less lol), ain't no turning back now
I'm also building a rom from source, more as a side-project to better familiarize myself with Android, but if it turns out well then that's always a plus.
Good luck on your rom!

Hello folks
I want to create live wallpapers for sale on the android market. I found a custom creator script and a lwp creator software that does this but I don't think it signs them. Now I am not sure if those could be sold on the market or not. I am still very new to android.
At the moment I am trying to start small, something simple like a looped animation sequence and make that a live wallpaper...just plain, with no settings. So what would be a good way to approach this mission ?
You could try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=739512. You could even try to make them on your phone with this: http://android.ownskin.com/livewallpaper.
Can I sell the apk that I get from custom creator or is there something I need to do before I upload it.

That's all ? Man thats simple. Here I was readying myself thinking I'm gonna need to brush up my old coding skills. Very nice. Thanks guy.
I would like to pack 2 live wallpapers in one apk. Is this possible ?
No, it's not unless you make an app which will allow selection of whichever one the user wants.
That sucks. I figured I'd provide 2 wallpapers as a pack for $0.99 because they are simple with no settings. There is no other way ?
I suppose I'll start with single ones and then eventually make an app.
Ok so I did some experiments, first apk was 80mb, second was 40mb and the newest one is like 400kb only. But it lags a lot. How do I optimize ?

Have you tried zipaligning them? See here: http://developer.android.com/resources/articles/zipalign.html.
I am just beginning installing eclipse and the steps that follow. I am still not sure how to open the apk to view what the code is. I was hoping I could see this code and then implement it in eclipse using a fresh project. Main thing I want to find out is how the image sequence loading is implemented. I guess I will post back here in a few days.
Should I code this in ICS or get the sdk files for 2.1 and do it on that ?

It depends on what you want. If you only want ICS (and later android versions to come) devices to support your wallpapers, then you can go ahead and code it in ICS. If you want a wider range of support (for now), then your 2nd option is best.
Well ideal case would be its backwards compatible. I've been reading and says ics has new api's...but I'm hoping the wallpaper and related services are backwards compatible. Its okay if its not, I get to learn at least.

It sure does, but most of them are not backward compatible. Notice only a few (approximately 3) apps built for ICS worked on Gingerbread so the chance is very small that they will support backward compatibility. They may be the same services, etc., but many will still require the ICS+ framework.
Interesting...so that means its safer to start from 2.1 for more than just backwards compatibility reasons. I just tried to grab api7 in sdk manager and it gave me error for file not found. Should I do 2.3.3 ?
Fixed it, 2.1 ready to go. Thanks.

Hi all,
I have quite a bit of developing experience but unfortunately have no idea how building roms works. Since now HALO from the PA rom is open source I was wondering if it has been ported as an APK. If it hasn't I was wondering if any kind folks out here know what needs to be done to port it and if anyone was willing to help. I understand pop up mini apps are not possible, and thats not what I am looking for. I just wanted the chat head style notifications. Also I know there is an app that does this, but I like the HALO implementation better, plus who doesn't like choices.
Thanks.
Just a friendly bump. If anyone perhaps knows how I can email someone from PA or knows any other dev who could help me out I would be much obliged.

I developed this ROM for TF101 2 months ago. So I've some experience with it.
So anyway, Its not ported as an APK file. Don't think all things in Android are an APK file. Its coded by Paranoid Android developers in the Android System. Then the HALO is being added into the Settings app, by modifying and adding some java and xml files in it. Then it need some time to test whether its working or not. If you want to know how the ROM build works, you can just Google for it.
If you want to see their work go to Paranoid Android github. That's the source for the ROM.

Yup, I know it was baked into android and isn't an app, but I was wondering if anyone knew how I could make it a standalone app. But thanks for the heads up, now I know where to look for all the code that HALO uses. I think it may be a fairly comprehensive code rewrite but Its worth a shot.
You might want to try these.

Yup I have seen those, the halo app is an addon that lets you pin apps to halo when you run a PA rom. The second has a very different execution style.

There is no easy way. First you have to learn Linux (ROM building) or learn to decompile the apps and look threw thousands of files. Alot of which are xmls and smali code.
^ true
Also depends which device you have

i knew it, but i have one question that im using my device with snapdragon chip, but i don't understand that why some app, when i get from the other devices then some app, i can use, but something some app i can't use to my device? But all app from google play, the alls that can use to setup to my device, all things what is the different?
Ok first your chip has very little to do with what apps will or will not work on your device. Those are concidered by many other factors. Like screen res, ram, and in some very rare cases gpu. Others are OEM dependent. Some are dependent in if your rooted or not.
I would advise putting any development ideas on hold while you go back and do alot of research.

thanks about your advice!!! First, my device had been rooted (my device is LG) then i can setup the apps from outside, and i see that when the modders decompile or rebuild a app, they also had added lge-res.apk, lge-res.odex, lge-framework.apk with command ' if ' in apktool like that 'apktool if lge-res.apk.....'
why did they do that?
I already have found very things from google search, but i could not find what things i need, cause be able to my english level is not good. im very exciting to do anything about that.
IF you be modder, professional in the modifier work. Can you help me to do that? Again that i thanks about your advice.

I am not an expert modder but I can try and point you in the right direction, those files are framework files that are required by the LG framework to function correctly, essentially they are extra resources that are required for the app to work correctly based on the changes LG made. Samsung, HTC, Motorola, etc. all have similar files that are required when working on any of there apk's (For example S Note is a Samsung specific app I would first have to input "if" the touchwiz framework for the app to compile and re-compile successfully in order to make any modifications to it). What other resources where you looking for?
