I can't seem to find an up-to-date tutorial on performing this process. I found some from mid-2009, but people are commenting that *228 doesn't work, this thing doesn't work anymore, that thing doesn't work anymore. Has anyone done this process recently?
I am trying to get this phone onto Verizon without a data plan since I will just be using wifi.
As far as I know, Sprint phones are GSM, VrzWls are CDMA. Totaly different frequencies. It is impossable (without an enginering degree and a lot of solder) to make one work on the others towers.

There are a lot of people on these forums that have done it - I just can't find concise up-to-date directions.
have you tried loading a verizon prl on the phone? i have my sprint tp on pageplus, which is a verizon mvno, and it wouldn't program ota until i loaded the prl.
I have not tried loading anything yet. I am still looking for directions that are not from 2008. Also, I have no interest in custom roms at this point. I simply want the Sprint phone to work on the Verizon with the least amount of work.

Step 1. Grab your phone and take it to a Verizon store to have it activated on their network...
End of subject
There are other things that you can do manually, but since the only thing you are interested in is to have the phone working for a different carrier, then that is all you need to do.

The only true part about Thelgord's statement is that Verizon is a CDMA network. Please don't pay attention at anything else in that statement.

What? I thought Verizon wouldn't do that. Plus, don't I need to convert radios and such from Sprint to Verizon?
I suppose sumone can help me out here. I have bought a
AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777 and its locked to the carrier. I have read the Helroz method of unlocking but some people have reported it dosent work and I dont want to try it several times and freeze my phone. People say spending some bucks and getting your phone unlocked by websites like cellunlocker.net or globalunlock.com is a good way to go. But m not sure if those can be trusted. If yes then please let me know some of the websites that can be trusted, that are genuine and fast...or any other working unlocking methods if any. It'll be greatfull

Unlocking this phone is extremely easy, all you have to do is search.
There is a thread that walks you through the whole process from start to finish. All you have to do is find it.
I really dont know where to search it..I mean there are so many threads and methods and I dont know which way to go. I'l be very greatfull if you send me the link if possible that you know will work. Please

I haven't no. I unlocked my captivate when I had one but not this phone. Read some of the posts in the thread to see if anyone is having or had problems. I would think it works as I'm sure many have used it and the directions are still there!

It works , tried on my SGH-I777 , Unlocked it on rooted stock and flashed UnNamed on it
I can also confirm it works. Used it on my AT&T SGS2. But remember you will only get edge speeds on any carrier other than AT&T.

You must say edge speeds when using a carrier like t-mobile... Which uses the 1700 band... Buf if you drop a sim that works on 850 band it's going to work on 3g or h+ if the carrier have it already..
I have unlocked my i777 using the Galaxy S unlock app.. when I cross the border I use it on iusacell gsm (mexican carrier) on hsdpa network.
Anyone know which cell companies have the faster connections in the Mediterranean? Travelling overseas for work and would like to get decent data speeds.
Which rooting method did you use? There are several methods in that thread and the download links arent working too..

Real people post in these threads. So you can trust what people say in already existing MANY rooting threads, there are even few STICKIES on rooting.
Search for rooting, just rooting, one word. Look for posts having larger number of hits and replies. I would read the first few posts by the original poster (OP) and then starting reading from the 5th last page to the last page.
If that doesn't help, repeat.
As for the download links not working, you wouldn't be the only one. So then search for words like mirror, download, link, links, db.tt, dropbox, etc If you don't find anything, post in that thread requesting for a download link for the exact file you need. You will know what file you need once you succeed in the search-repeat exercise above.

Thanx buddy Finally unlocked it..one last question. I want to use Cyanogenmod ROM. So can this be done on my phone?? I mean will it be locked again? Do i have to unlock it all again? Please let me know it in brief. If there is some procedure for phones which have been rooted and unlocked and wanting to install custom roms please let me know
Go to Cyanogen website - read the wiki. Go to Development thread - read the CM7 thread on the FIRST PAGE. But PLEASE stop asking people to do the work for you - they've already done the hard parts.

That's because, as far as I know, only T-Mo uses the oddball frequencies.
AT&T phones are 3G world phones. I've taken my various AT&T phones to Europe with 3G (including moto RAZR & BB 9000). That's the only real reason I haven't switched to T-Mobile (that and I'm on a family plan).
And Helroz unlocker works. I've used on my stock, rooted I777. Just try it. I've tried it on phones that don't work, and it just does nothing (but that's why it takes the backup anyway). When you learn how it works, you know what risk there is (if any).

Before you do anything to your phone like installing a ROM, make sure you read AND understand what you're doing beforehand. You do not sound confident enough to be modding a phone and the chance of you ending up here looking for help seems high. The procedures are all spelled out in their respective threads, so read, read and read. This place does not exist to bail people out when things go wrong because they tried doing something they didn't fully understand. And it is always better to post to an existing related thread rather than start a new one.

Hey guys, I'm a noob, please don't hurt me
I'm an American living in Japan and I just bought my first smart phone...the EVO 3D (3G) for AU by KDDI...I'd post a link, but I'm not yet allowed.
Their non-3G network was CDMA...so I assume that their 3G is also CDMA....can anyone confirm that?
Under that assumption (CDMA), we're still waiting for ICS, so I'm wondering what you'd all recommend I upgrade my phone to while I wait. I'm not a fan of the stock Android 2.3 that came on the phone, and I'd really like ICS....but if there is something I could use now, that might be fine with me.
Also, what are the basic steps I need to follow, I found the sticky thread in the dev forum, but I'm not sure what stickies would apply to my situation. I'm guessing I'd have to start with a root kit, and go from there....but please fill in the gaps, thanks

Lol I see.
Chances are that you will not be able to activate any CMDA phone from overseas on a network here in the USA. The big networks like verizon and sprint will not allow foreign IMEI numbers to be submitted to their system for activation.
Do you happen to know what frequency the cdma network you came from runs on? Look behind the battery

When I had AU by KDDI when I was living in Japan is was CDMA. As far as I am aware the Japanese version wasn't able to be rooted using the CDMA methods here in the development forum. Also the ROMs here would not work on your device and would actually need to be slightly modified to include files from your device to work, but you don't have an ICS ROM to use for replacing files.

That's kind of the conclusion I came to, after running through all the different root/unlock methods, I came across issues in every single one, and my skill / confidence isn't high enough to really make a go at figuring it out.
Only thing I haven't really attempted is downgrading from hboot 1.5 to 1.4, partially because my software version is different from the instructions, and soft bricking the phone makes me nervous considering the potential incompatibilities.
I think our phone is more or less the same as the sprint phone, just on the Japanese frequency. I'm hoping that the sprint announcement means we will also be getting ICS soon... but who knows
Hello Community,
I recently purchased a used HTC Droid DNA on eBay. The user couldn't tell me very much about the phone beyond describing it's exterior condition to me. I didn't have to play with this phone for very long before I realized what a pleasurable device this would be to use, especially for someone upgrading from a Motorola Bionic. HOWEVER, it also wasn't very long into my usual customizations that I realized, that like my Bionic early on, doing anything fun on this phone is a son-of-a-*****.
I want to eventually root this phone, flash Cyanogenmod, and then flash it to Pageplus Cellular, but first things first. I really don't want to wait 5 days for a AT&T SIM card to get here from Minnesota or wherever, so does anyone know of a way I can tell if this device is already unlocked? Perhaps someone knows of an application or some other software than can tell me, or maybe there is something in the phone's settings? Anything at all would be nice.
Thank you,
Jack2402 =)
If you boot into the boot loader (turn off device and hold power and vol down) it should say s on or s off. That's the best way to tell, you are looking for s off. Moonshine will get you unlocked and s off though really easily

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't you telling me how to unlock saftey? Isn't that different from unlocking the SIM so I can flash it Pageplus? Or am I confused. Forgive me, I've rooted several phones and I've flashed one phone but I've never had to unlock one because I usually purchase them from sellers who already know there're unlocked.

It's sim unlocked. Your best bet is to wait for your sim to arrive put it in and just change the apn settings to match page plus to get mms. Once you do that you should be good to go.
As for flashing and rooting it's actually easy thanks to beaups and the moonshine process he created for getting s off.
Head over to the development section and it's stickeyed
Run moonshine and follow the easy steps and you will get an s off phone and unlocked bootloader. After that load a custom recovery and then back up with a nandroid backup and flash any rom or kernel of your choosing.
If you need any help with that feel free to PM me and I will be happy to help you.

Actually, for the last year or so, every LTE device that I've been aware of from VZW has come SIM unlocked, included DNA and Iphone 5. I think VZW isn't too afraid of people leaving, and if they do, they have a nasty ETF they can hit you with. And ding your credit if you don't pay it. And if you already have bad credit, then VZW already has a hefty deposit. So, yeah.

It's not quite that easy to get mms working. Verizon's stock ROM uses a whitelist for APN types and will not allow a MMS APN at all, you can enter the settings but they will be lost and MMS will NOT work, spent 2 hours on the phone with AT&T support working on this very issue.
If you're going to use the DNA on a GSM carrier for daily use, it's best to flash something like NOS M7 GSM version as this will allow the proper APN to be set up and mms will work. Once I switched to a ROM meant for GSM carriers, I have found MMS to be 100% reliable.

Yeah, I see. No, what I meant about the AT&T SIM card was that people use differing carrier SIMs to find out if their phone is unlocked. I didn't want to wait on eBay to send me an AT&T SIM to see if my Verizon is unlocked.

You will need to do some digging to find a guide (or pay for a service) to flash it to PagePlus. The ability to flash from Verizon to PagePlus is unrelated to the locked status of the SIM slot. I believe you will only get 3G on PagePlus, as well.
Yes, the SIM slot is unlocked for use on GSM carriers, but that won't matter if you're looking to flash to PagePlus.

Kind of on a time schedule to do all this so any quick replies, would just be great.

He is asking about flashing the phone to another network, not about unlocking the bootloader (although it's worth reading for general knowledge). Unlocking the bootloader will be the first of many steps to flash the phone to another carrier.
OP, there are a few guides about flashing your phone to other carriers in the General section.
Woops I guess I miss understood the question. Sorry
Turns out sprint was just like you're good to use it on other carriers and I ended up finding a pretty dope service that used sprints towers anyways. Thanks for the help though guys.
