Splashtop alternative for ACER Aspire One 255 - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All,
I have an Acer Aspire One running ICS.
The thing is practically useless, however I was hoping to re-instate its usefulness.
I was hoping to run things like Emit and Splashtop on the netbook so when i am at hope I can utilise my desktop PC's power while on the Netbook.
My only problems are as follows:
a) I cannot download these apps from Market as they are not compatible
b) If I make a backup on my tablet/phone (of the app I paid for) using Androzip or the like and install the APK manually, the app force closes, presumably due to hardware/software incompatibility.
I am hoping to find alternate apps that my provide a similar solution that MAY work.
Obviously the netbook also has Win7 Starter, however running anything in windows seems to stretch the poor thing beyond its limits, hence I am attempting to find a solution in android if possible.
Thanks for any assistance in advance!!
Scott

Questions should be asked in Q&A forums, not Development forums.
Thread moved.

Sorry. Thought I did post in q and a.

[DISCUSSION] Dual Boot Linux

Okay, we've got our bootloader unlocked, we're rooted, CWM, and custom rooms; where's the dual booting linux? I know we have that vpn stuff, but what about turning this beast into a computer. We could even get some of this hacking in on the go with backtrack. I may be wrong, but this is all possible, right? I'm a bit of a noob in dual booting on a tablet, so don't flame if I'm way off or something, but I think it would be neat... Thoughts, ideas, etc.... tell me what you think.
Edit: Or do we need nvflash unlocked?
Edit2: Okay guys, now we know (or at least I do) that Ubuntu is in progress. You can check it out over at www.androidroot.mobi. Soo.. Lets make this the discussion thread (Info, Q's, discussions, debates, etc... whatever...). Enjoy and I'll try to update with new info (feel free to give your insight)
I am sure you'll get flamed for posting in the wrong section but I am eagerly awaiting someone to get dual boot running.
My no development skills at all guess is nvflash is the problem.
We'll let someone who knows correct me though.

Ubuntu is being worked on for the TFP, similar to what it was for the TF (by the same developer)
Next time, please post in the proper section.
Thanks, and sorry. Mods, please move to proper section.

I had to go back to uni, so my time is limited, still working on getting stuff packaged up, but time is something I don't have much of for the moment.
Yeah, I know how it is. Regardless, keep up the good work.

Anyone knows if there is already a public repository for the Ubuntu dualboot?
Would love to help out =]
Also is the same approach used as for the TF101 dualboot or is the partitioning different?
Keep up the great work so far guys!
I hope to see dual boot with Ubuntu one day as it'll save me the trouble of keeping my netbook for days when I need to do MATLAB and other things exclusive to PCS. Would love to see an implementation where android is still kept in internal memory and Ubuntu is kept in the microsd/sd (not sure how performance would be if this was the case though)

Yea I agree waiting for dual boot use in Uni classes so limited right now with android want to do some programming on atp
Why isn't this deleted yet? Mods are asleep.

Bump.
Does anyone know if there is a public repository already for the TFP201? Maybe I can contribute =]
And do you guys know if someone else other than lilstevie is working on a dual boot solution?
Currently I'm a bit cautiousness about flashing due to the 'brick 2 option'

Is there a version of MATLAB that will run on an ARM architecture? I looked it up before I got my prime and came up empty. I would be very interested if you could share a link.

Anybody else hear about Ubuntu for Android?

This is probably old news but I just recently saw this on the Ubuntu website. Looks pretty freaking sweet! Still in development tho.

There's actually a phone made by Fujitsu that's similar in that it can be booted into the full desktop windows 7 32 bit by the switch of a button. The downside I see to it is that when you are running it the phones radio is turned off so you can't receive calls or texts also the phone UI is some proprietary Fujitsu software. Needless to say it looks pretty lame compared to Android but nevertheless it's still pretty awesome looking. Here's a few links if you guy's wanna check it out.

Would like to point out while Ubuntu are working on it, there are already a range of projects to get it running on your device (see my sig) my project is on of the more active projects, really the only big thing missing that they have working is native graphics (right now my project uses a vnc server within ubuntu to view gui within android).
Mine works on a whole host of devices (not just dual core like ubuntu project) and you can also install debian or backtrack if you wish.
We are in the process of adding more options to the app and making it far more user friendly (Although it is already pretty fool proof)
I love ubuntu on my pc. I would love it on my phone.

If you can virtualize another distribution within it, you basically have Linux within Linux within Linux.

Porting Proprietary APK's to Different Phones

I asked this in the Desire HD forums (since I have a DHD), but nobody seemed to know.
I'm just curious if it is possible to port proprietary apps (for example the S3 SecEmail.apk) to different phones, or are they locked into mfg specific phones?
The reason I ask this is because I am trying to find an email app that offers image compression, and I can't find one anywhere. This is the only one I've found.
Also... I'm not sure if this is the right forum to be asking this in. If it isn't please let me know. I'm still quite the noob here, and I don't want to irritate anyone.
You can do that using something like tibackup. But theres a chance the phone youre porting it into might be missing the necessary framworks and youll get a forced closed when trying to open the app. Have you tried checking out k9 mail
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda app-developers app
Yeah, I tried K9, and it doesn't have an image compression feature from what I can tell. I even tried to use apktool on secmail, but couldn't do it due to a bunch of errors.

Windows 8 on a Nook?

So I read through this article> http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/barnes-and-noble-new-nook-in-september/ < and was wondering if any of the Windows gurus here at XDA has done any playing in this direction, or would be willing to try? Just think it would be interesting to try, and I'm not knowledgable enough to do it. I would be willing to learn if I could get some guidance. I realize this is mainly Android over here, but this does involve the Nook Tablet, so , What are your thoughts?
Windows 8 will not be released on any currently existing products. It might come to next-gen nooks, though.
From what I've read (I did not read your article) it seems unlikely that it will be able to be ported, but I've been wrong before.

I know we've got windows xp and such on some devices, but android is based on Linux, so it will never run natively it appears, but with the arm support it might be possible with a lot of work. Also I do see someone by sometime next year getting a universal win 8 emulator, but it'll take a lot of work, and be a while.

iPaq, arm processor, windows 2003SE and we always wished for Linux. We had 2 versions of Linux by the end but not very dependable for my purposes.
What you ask may happen but I'd still rather Linux!
Nook tablet GPU can't support win 8.

I don't see win on the nook tablet soon, but after some looking I might have a from with the win 8 metro UI on top of ICS soon. I'm going to go play around with the idea right now

Sorry to say this but windows 8 RT aka the ARM version will be locked down to the device it is installed on and you wont be able to install in on another device. The UEFI will be locked as well. Now if I can find the web page that goes into more detail then I can remember it will shed some light on this.
Ok here is a page on UEFI http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2011/09/22/protecting-the-pre-os-environment-with-uefi.aspx and microsoft will have all that manadatory on arm but be more open on x86 so that people can still use linux and older versions of windows on x86 systems
Hey, im about 50% done getting the metro ui on top of ICS. I got the home, back, and recent app list, the notification, volume, settings and everything themed, next im adding the live tiles and such probably tonight, the ill upload the .zip and teach everyone how to add it.

[Linux] Photon 4G Full Linux (Debian) inside WebTop - WORKS

Hi all,
I have no rights (yet) to post in the development forum, so do so here instead for the moment in hopes it's interesting.
The Atrix folks had placed Debian availability in WebTop via chroot (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1093790).
Alas, that mod does not work, as is, on the Photon for various reasons. However, I have modified the installers (and uninstallers) so as to allow the Photon 4G also to have chroot-ed Linux (Debian) in WebTop mode.
If it's interesting, I'm happy to post the installers and relevant download information here on this forum, if that's appropriate. I use the system constantly, and it's quite good. Personally, I installed wbar and configured that up for all my 'desktop' apps. The wbar, of course, shows up on the WebTop desktop as one would expect.
The mods I made for the Photon keep the Debian install quite un-invasive relative to the replacement models (GenTop2, UbunTop, and others). Personally, I am, and have been for a very long time, a *heavy* Gentoo user, and love the distro, but not for this situation (though I might, one day, get it running on the Photon for fun if no one else does that first).
In any event, let me know if there's a better place to post the installer and uninstaller scripts, or if they're even interesting to anyone but myself. I suspect this forum (general) is not the proper venue for that level of sophistication, but I could be wrong. To be sure, I did search for Debian on the Photon forums and came up blank regarding this mod, so I figured I am ok posting about it.

No unlocking required. In fact the only requirements are a rooted phone and busybox installed using the BusyBox installer.
My phone is locked and doesn't even have any form of ClockworkMod installed. Works like a champ.
