Hi,
I'm having problems syncing my contacts from my phone to my Gmail account. Basically, they're syncing the wrong way!
If I put a new number in my phone then sync to Gmail the number is deleted as it isn't already in my Gmail contacts list.
Surely this is the wrong way around? Surely it should add the new number to my Gmail account? After all, the phone is the logical place to create new contacts.
So, what am I doing wrong? Any suggestions?
If it matters I'm running Vodafone branded firmware: Baseband 1.2.28, Build R2BA024.
Thanks.

could it be you're editing your contacts on gmail as well? then again.. it couldn't be because it's 2 different contacts right?
how bout, if you create an account in google contacts? does it get synced with your fone and show up there?
Yeah if I add a contact to Gmail it syncs to my phone fine. Just not the other way around.
*confused*

i also have a question to this case. obviously (and i think this is also the reason why this thread was opened) gmail sync only syncs the contacts from your gmail-account to the phone...actually it would be more valuable if i could transfer the contacts from my phone to my gmail-account, as it would also be a kind of backup if something happens to my device.
it is also a thing of daily routine, if i receive a new number or mailadress, i do save it in my phone. because of the only sync-direction gmail->phone, i have to sit in front of my pc in the evening and add the new contact details to my gmail-account...? wouldn't it be easier if i could start a transfer from my phone TO gmail?!?!

My thoughts exactly! Far more logical that way around.
The weird thing is, it used to work that way for me. Now it doesn't. As far as I'm aware I haven't changed any settings on either my phone or my gmail account. Very strange!
Tried clearing the cache btw and that hasn't solved the problem.

so you already did that with your X10? you transferred the contacts of your phone to gmail?
of course it would be perfect, if i could chose which side should synchronize with the other...
e.g. if i need to reset my phone, then i'd love to get my contacts back from gmail!
hope, that somebody can help us here!

Yeah. As far as I'm aware it used to sync in both directions. When I first got my phone I ran a manual sync and all my contacts appeared on my phone. Then if I added one to my phone, or changed one, and ran another sync it would update my gmail contacts with the new/changed one.
Now it doesn't. Strange!
The only thing I can think it would be is that I changed the last part of my address from googlemail.com to gmail.com.
I wonder if that might have something to do with it?

hey dont worry for that part as it syncs all contacts in a very clever way, for eg i had flashed my phone several times and didnt kept backup of my contacts(apart from one on gmail) and when i was done with flashing i just use to sync them again with gmail and voila..ph got updated according to copy of gmail contacts...so it doesnt deleates the contacts on gmail...

hm, so it should normally align both states maybe? is the sync-function really checking the contacts of the phone and those in gmail an adds only the contacts on that side, where they are missing?
well, i have tried the sync once and it deleted all the new contacts on my phone! there was only a transfer of my gmail-contacts to my X10...phone book was ignored and even overwritten!
any hints what sunjin an i do wrong?

It used to sync both ways for me but now it doesn't. This is very, VERY annoying as I frequently add new contacts to my phone but I now have to remember to go add them to Gmail too or they get deleted next time I sync. Illogical if you ask me.
Can anyone with a different phone/version of Android confirm if this happens to you also?

Hi there,
I have got a problem, which I don't know how to solve: I just wanted to add a birthday to a contact already saved on my Galaxy S2. So I entered the contact, clicked "edit" - but then, no field for the birthday!? Wtf?
In addition, when I open the contact, TW does not show me the birthday either (for contacts from exchange which do have a birthday added)...
So, this can't be true, can it? Where can I add and see the birthdays of my contacts?
Thanks!
Edit: It seems that I cannot add a birthday to contacts that are connected, which means, which come from my exchange server - can that be?
Because when I add a new contact and choose "Save on phone" I can add a birthday, but when I choose a new contact "Exchange" I cannot add a birthday... But my Exchange Software
can save birthdays, it did so with my HD2 on Android. Any ideas?

Yeah, but only if you created this contact on the phone. It does NOT work if you have an exchange contact.

That's nice. However, I wanted to add a birthday to one of my contacts when I was attending a meeting - I neither had Outlook nor MyPhoneExplorer with me. So, there should be a way to complete existing contacts, shouldn't it?
Try to add the birthdaydate via google and sync afther.

Yes, it is more than disappointing.
And no, we don't want to sync our data with google servers for good reasons. Thats why I have my own Exchange and thats what I want the Galaxy S2 to do, nothing more, nothing less.
Guys - I just try to help you out. I came from Lotus Notes and got about 240 contacts in my adressbook. I tried several ways to get them in sync via android. What worked for me was to make a simpel csv-file with all my contacts and import it into my google account. Next step i sync via my phone with my googleacc. This worked. Then I sync with exchange - and now all my fields is visible - and edible. I think - that the phone just work best and smooth with a clean new contactfile. Afther i have no problem.
All systems I have worked with during the years, often got problems when the adressbook not is native.

Thanks for trying to help. But it cannot be that you have to give all your data to Google in order to get things to work properly although you have your own exchange server.
Just delete the contacts in google afther you sync.
By the way - if you worry about security - what you do on a exchange server LOL

Glad to see its not just me, very annoying though. Samsumgs exchange active sync implementation seems to be far from perfect.
Once a week my calendar/e-mail goes rogue and starts up using alot of battery, a reboot fixes this.
I hope this contact problem gets fixed pretty soon, alot of the extra info is missing not just birthdays
I use aTAKEphONE as a dialer application, this lets you add a birthday date and gives many more options...

We can not discuss about this as I am not the decision maker in my company but of course can suggest to move away from Exchange what they won't do for 100%.
All my previous companies were running Exchange by the way and it's not a point to talk about now.
I've done now what you suggested and imported my Exchange contacts to GoogleMail, deleted and unmarked for sync all contacts and accounts on my Samsungs Galaxy S2.
Resynced now first with GoogleMail only and then added the Exchange account for sync.
I can confirm that I get the birthday field now under the contacts.
Whyever the phone only shows the GoogleMail contacts with Icon and not any other (Active Sync, Skype, Facebook SNS) contacts anymore...
I am confused why they dont show up anymore...
Ahhh now I see... as I deleted my contacts from the phone it also wiped the Exchange contacts... great
OK... it's the same... only the imported contacts from GoggleMail have the birthday field.
When I create a new contact on my phone which is by default saved Exchange then I don't get this option to add a birthday... useless...
I have just received a message from Samsung concerning this problem. They say, they cannot promise that it will be fixed.
Oh, thats very nice. Thank you, very much. Once and never again.

If you would like to add a birthday to a contact, you need to:
Select the relevant contact
Select Edit
Select “Add another field”
Select “Events”
Then add the birthday
Hope this info helps
I entered in my Facebook account and it started uploading all my friends and added like 700 more contacts. Certainly didn't want that so I unchecked all the contacts stuffed went into people and unchecked Facebook there. I they all went away however when I am picking a contact when I start a message it shows all of the Facebook numbers again. I it did the same thing on my girlfriends rhyme as well and she'd like a solution too. Thanks in advance

Google+ is part of your Google Account. All of your cantacts are synced together under that account. There is no way to separate it, even if you didn't have G+ on the phone.

You entered your Facebook account info into your phone, and it started uploading your contacts to Facebook? Did you mean downloading your Facebook contacts to your phone? Yes, it does that. The People app in Sense loves to suck in ALL your contacts and combine them (it calls it "linking" and you can see what contacts it has linked for you in the Settings menu.) The Messages app pulls from that same database, and I couldn't find a way to restrict it either.
Have you tried Settings -> Accounts and Sync -> Facebook and uncheck "Contacts?" You may have to remove the account entirely, uncheck auto-sync long enough to get the account added, and then uncheck the Contacts box. Just a guess, I haven't tried it.
Yeah that didn't stop it from appearing when I would view contacts through a new text. I just completely removed the account seems fine now.

Hrm my Facebook only synced with my existing contacts - it's an option in the Facebook app
Also I have like 9000 people on Google+ but they aren't in my phone either....
not sure what you guys are doing to get them all
I don't have 9,000 people on G+ because I am not a whore, lol. But, there are options in both the apps and contacts to only sync with existing contacts, only add people with numbers, etc...
If you have 9,000 friends on G+ they are not your friends. I have been on since day 0 and have slightly over 100 people I know in real life
Apparently there's a big Facebook app update today so hopefully that helps.

G+ is more like Twitter for me, I follow people I don't consider "friends" simply because I want to read what they have to say. I have a separate circle for real Friends (capital-F!)
Anyway, the person who was complaining about G+ contacts showing on his phone may have been noticing them in Talk, because the Big G just decided to default all your G+ circles into Talk contacts unless you go in and deselect them. I don't think there's any way to integrate G+ into your phone contacts.
My G+ contacts are linked with their various phone contacts. But of course, all of my contacts have been backed up to Google and GMail since before Android even existed.

They're linked with existing contacts, yeah. But I don't know if it imports from Google+ contact info for non-local or non-Google people. In other words, if the only place you've got info for someone is a Google+ circle, I think that's where they'll stay. Once you send them an email, though, if your GMail account is set to auto-add to contacts, it'll offer you the chance to link the G+ contact and the Google contact.
This seems like it makes sense to me, because the people I have in my G+ circles that I don't have any other contact info for do NOT show up on my phone or in GMail.
Hi everyone,
I'm using CM9, but I tried different ICS roms and I encounter this problem with all of them.
- I'm trying to add a local phone (non gmail) contact to my phone, but it doesn't let me do that. When I add a new contact, a message box pops up saying, that: "Your new contact will be synchronized with <my gmail account>". How to add a local phone (not a SIM card) number?
- I have a backup of all my local phone numbers from GB made with MyPhoneExplorer, and restoring it works when I'm on ICS. The contacts are shown as local phone contacts (PCSC). However, after restarting the phone and waiting a few minutes, all the local contacts are completely gone. MyPhoneExplorer confirms that there are no contacts in the phone either. What's going on?
I really do not want to sync my contacts with google. Looking forward to hearing some answers!
Cheers!
I use CM9-alpha4 (i9001) and it works for me.
I did completely turn of "accounts and sync" and I also didn't flash gapps.
When I first created a new contact I was notified that it will be local and not synced. No problem there.
I'm using the CM9 9-20120614 version (the newest beta). I have Accounts and Sync on, since I want some stuff synced with my phone (facebook, linkedin, gmail calendar, etc.). And I experience the beforementioned problems...
I fiddled with the options but found nothing that would allow me to store my contacts locally and prevent the existing ones from being deleted
There is an issue in the Bugtracker:
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=26834
You could also use some other account that doesn't sync with Google. Funambol[0] would be my choice.
[0] http://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdid=com.funambol.androidsync
Thanks for that link.
However, I'm not sure, how is that cloud solution about to help storing my contacts locally without sharing it with any 3rd party?
You have to assiciate your contacts with some account. The funambol client creates such a "account provider" for you. But I just tried it and it seems like the client always wants you to sync with some server. You could set up your own server but that might not be what you want.
Sorry I can't really help. There is another thread about this:

Thanks! I will test it soon, although I have already moved my contacts to Google's cloud. Also, will this fix prevent me from synching google contacts? If so, it's more of a workaround than fix.
It breaks contact syncing deliberately. If you want to keep that while enabling local storage of contacts you need to edit the contacts.apk . I initially decompiled it and identified the line of code that enables or disables the local option.

I wonder how do you manage your contacts, for me it turned out very messy. Well I don't really have problem with Google contacts, but since our phones are also capable to show FB and many accounts contacts i would be awesome to combien all the useful infos....something like ENHANCING my Gooogle contacts using other accounts infos (like picture ansd birthdays, among others)
I don{t know if this is a temporary issu....but My FB contact are not synching well and and pictures are not always synched.
I used to have an iPhone 3gs and ther was this app called "MyPhone+"....was very handy......anyone know something like this for Android!
Hope you can help me....!

Windows Phone has an option of linking two or more contacts. Quite useful. There must be an easy way in Android as well.
When you go to Contacts and select any contact, there should be an option to join contacts. You can cut out the duplicate entries this way and have all the info show up on one name.
When you join contacts it's works but if you wipe flash new rom all changes revert back

I keep all my contacts in Microsoft outlook on my PC and sync using "myphonexplorer".
Categories in outlook sync with groups in both stock android contact manager and "go contacts".
I prefer "go contacts" to the stock contact manager because if fully customizable and allows group messaging without the cap on number of contacts also group chat..
"Myphonexplorer" syncs contacts, messages, calendar, and files via usb and Wi-Fi. Also allows you to text from your PC.
The only things missing from "Myphonexplorer" is mms and group messaging from PC which would be really nice.
Both "Myphonexplorer" and "go contacts" are free in the play store.

Not if you sync them to Google after you have them sorted the way you want.
i don't want to open a new topic just for this question, so i'll post it here:
When adding a new contact to a google account from android, is there any way to auto insert that contact to a custom created group? I keep forgetting to add the new contacts to a specific group and i want this operation to be done automatically, any solutions?

vCard sucks.. it doesnt support enough kinds of information, such as categories.. it doesnt work worth crap for CJK Characters either.. I cant believe every single program for Android only supports vCrap anyway.. but its all we have for now I guess... Windows 7 only has vCard 2.1 support.. .. but, it could be remedied on the software end by a program that would allow you to group contacts by a specific field.. you could then use one of the other existing fields as a "Categories" field...
there arent really any good programs from what I've seen.. honestly, I think i need to learn how to program an Android app just so I can find something useful so i'm not always stuck in suckville
but then, i dont think android will be around much longer.
